Welcome to this special episode of the B.rad podcast, where Brad Kearns visits American record holding middle distance runner Shelby Houlihan at her high-altitude training camp in Flagstaff, AZ. This is an incredibly powerful and in-depth discussion about all aspects of what it's like to compete in elite level sport. Shelby has just completed her four-year layoff from a highly unjust and controversial doping suspension and is returning to competition as the 2025 US and world indoor season approaches. This wide-ranging discussion is a master class on developing the ideal perspective and mindset of a champion athlete. Shelby has been through hell like few other athletes - her livelihood and status in elite sport taken away in an instant with the four-year suspension. Please watch our first interview where we discuss the details of her doping violation and her legal case and the incredible injustice and lack of due process that athletes face if they test positive. We recap it a bit in this show, and You’ll learn about the nuanced dynamics of doping in high level sports., how the system works, and how we might do things better and more fairly. You learn about how a champion athlete has to cultivate a singular focus and narrow mindset but how this can lead to disappointment and frustration when you attach too much of your self esteem to results. its double edge sword but we talk about the sweet spot where you can still be a vicious competitor but also a well-balanced person. You learn about how Shelby spent her off time still training at a high level, doing some incredible time trials, getting a masters in sports psych, and making a great effort to broaden her perspective about life and sport. You learn about the business of T&F, a somewhat unpleasant topic when you realize how even the greatest athletes have very tenuous career prospects. This is a woman who has dedicated her life to elite sport and it was an honor to see such amazing resilience and maturity as she tells her incredible story. You don't have to be a track fan to deeply appreciate this interview. Please listen to the entire riveting two hours as we get the lowdown from someone who is about to go wild on the track and get some more records and titles. TIMESTAMPS: Shelby Houlihan has quite a story to tell about her experience with the anti-doping system. [02:02] After her four-year suspension, Shelby is looking forward to coming back into competition, although she is feeling frustrated. [05:15] For her comeback she still doesn’t want to use super spikes. She wants to run fast naturally not faster because of her shoes. [08:20] There are people, the haters, that don’t believe Shelby’s story. [14:06] Track and Field journalism field is rather small. Have they treated Shelby fairly? [18:09] Even when disqualified, Shelby ran because it was her identity. [20:57] Teaching sports psychology is a good place for her with all her experience. [25:52] A lot of athletes have a hard time with retirement….trying to figure out who they are without competition. [29:57] Has Shelby been able to cheer her friends on even though she, herself, isn’t running? [32:43] The biggest problem with elite athletes is over-training. [38:20] There are many injured athletes that return to competition too soon. If you rush it, you’re going to pay later. [54:48] Upon Shelby’s suspension, she lost her sponsors. [57:53] Unfortunately, some other elite athletes were not supportive of Shelby. Most athletes don’t understand what happens with the testing system. [01:02:11] Many athletes are doping and fans like to watch the sports. [01:08:51] How is Shelby going to handle the comeback? She hopes it will still be fun. [01:12:35] How will the crowd receive her? [01:16:24] How did she handle the fact that she knew she was clean, but had accept the suspension? [01:18:58] How is the team environment with her comeback? [01:22:01] Why are shoe sponsors so important over other products? [01:31:24] The Beer Mile World Championship was a fun challenge. [01:31:41] How much importance does she put on breaking her records? How does aging effect the athlete? [01:42:54] What does Shelby’s training week look like? So that's a thing now. Rex Maurer has shown the world that even college-aged swimmers can drop nearly 7 seconds in their best event as if he hit a growth spurt. Maybe he did. The Texas sophomore is only a summer and fall semester into his time in Austin following his transfer from Stanford where he had a solid freshman year. But this Longhorn mid-distance crew is different. It is stacked with hitters, as demonstrated with Carson Foster breaking the American Record in the 500 about an hour before Rex decided he'd like that title on his CV. Maybe this reset the 500 freestyle has seen in recent years (see also Leon Marchand's otherworldly underwater freak show 4:02 from 2023) will translate to the long course 400 and finally deliver the much-awaited sub 3:40 that has eluded the world's greatest swimmers since Thorpee. Rex Maurer, the son of an Olympic swimmer and head USC coach Lea Maurer, swam lifetime bests in the 400IM, 1650, and 200 freestyle, all at a mid-season invite, and he is now expected to haul in points for Texas at the 2025 NCAAs as one of THE swimmers to watch in March.
Join me on this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast as I sit down with the electric Chaunté Lowe! From Olympic high jumper to motivational speaker, Chaunté's journey is a testament to resilience, integrity, and the power of a positive mindset. Chaunté reflects on her progression in athletics, from earning a retroactive Olympic bronze to becoming a world champion. With deep-rooted values of hard work and preparation, she offers insights that parallel our own themes of hope and positivity. Her ability to relate her Olympic journey to helping people find their own “Olympics” in life is truly inspiring. Her childhood in Riverside, California, underscored by poverty and domestic violence, shaped her resilience and commitment to breaking the cycle through education and mentorship. This episode is brimming with heartfelt stories, valuable insights, and Chaunté's undeniable spirit! About Chaunté, Chaunté Lowe is the story of determination perseverance and strength. Not only is Lowe a mother of 3, a wife and a finance professional; she is also a professional athlete, an American Record Holder, a 4-time Olympian, a 3-Time World Championship medalist, and 12 times US National Champion. When speaking she is true to how she performs. She is animated, entertaining and humorous. She dances and plays to the crowd as she shares her stories of beating impossible odds, time and time again. She possesses the ability to keep the group engaged and hanging on her every word or jump. Those who get a chance to encounter her leave inspired and motivated. Her infectious personality is electrifying. You can't help but leave an interaction with her with a winning, "I can do ANYTHING" attitude. Lowe was able to realize her childhood dream of going to the Olympics at only 20-years-old, making her the first woman from Georgia Tech's track and field team to become an Olympian. The following year, Lowe won silver at the 2005 World Championships to become the first American woman to win a world outdoor championships high jump medal since Louise Ritter won bronze at the inaugural event in Helsinki in 1983. Lowe is always a crowd favorite with impossibly defined abs, dramatic dance moves, and even the occasional backflip. Lowe graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in economics. In 2008 she represented her country again in the high jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Days after returning from the 2012 Olympic Games, started teaching trigonometry at Grayson High School in Atlanta. Married triple jumper Mario Lowe on August 21, 2005, and gave birth to daughter Jasmine in July 2007 and Aurora in April 2011 and Mario Josiah in 2013. Lowe has broken the American Record 3 Times and is the current indoor and outdoor American Record holder with 2.02m (6'-7.5”) and 2.05 (6'8.75”) meters respectively. In addition to her Olympic Games appearances, she has represented the United States on six world championship teams. The story is not over; she most recently represented the US in her fourth Olympic Games in the summer of 2016 and is showing no signs of stopping any time soon. Don't be surprised to see her jumping in her 5th Olympic Games in Tokyo the summer of 2020. Here's some additional resources for you... While Kristi's away at the Olympics, we kick off this episode with a conversation between producer Christine O'Donnell and world rowing commentator Colleen Saville about Kristi's races in Paris. Then we dive into her interview with Rudy Winkler, American track and field athlete who competes in the hammer throw and weight throw. Rudy is the current American Record Holder in the hammer toss with a distance of 82.71m. He has finished in the top 8 at his last 4 World Championship and Olympic finals, and is a 3x Olympian who is on Team USA in Paris with Kristi right now. Rudy shares with Kristi how this niche sport was perfect for a self-described “big kid,” what makes this sport a 98% mental game, and how avoiding superstition and embracing anxiety has helped him achieve his goals. Plus, Rudy gives us a hint of how you can tell if he's happy with his throw or not. They also speak candidly on their complicating feelings about dedicating so much of their lives to sport, and how they find balance (or not) with other priorities. "Oh my god, I'm going to the Olympics!" Weini Kelati came into the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials as the American Record Holder in the half marathon, and as the only athlete in the women's 10,000m field with the Olympic Standard. "As runners, we all deserve to be at the start line — and at the finish line, winning races." Last month, Weini Kelati broke the American record in the half marathon, running 1:06:25 in Houston in her debut at the distance. Just a few days later, she ran — and won — the USATF cross-country championships. Weini's plan was never to be a record-breaking runner, though. Growing up in Eritrea, Weini was accustomed to walking — sometimes running — two hours to get to school each day, six days a week. Running on top of that? No thank you, she told her P.E. teacher. But somehow, she ended up on the school's track team, and at 17 years old, she was chosen to represent Eritrea at the Junior World Championships in Eugene, OR. The rest, as they say, is history. Weini intentionally missed her flight back home in favor of seeking asylum to stay in the U.S. and pursue a running career. She attended the University of New Mexico, where she became the most-decorated track and field athlete in the program's history, and she's been breaking records ever since. Weini lives in Flagstaff, AZ, where she is sponsored by Under Armour and trains with the Dark Sky Distance group. Today's podcast is one of the best we've ever released. It is entertaining, deep, impactful, and will leave you walking away hearing one of the best stories from our sport. The man who makes his first appearance on the podcast today is Parker Stinson, the man who was one of the first athletes I looked up to when I became a fan of the sport in middle school. If you're not familiar with Parker, he is the US record holder in the 25K. He has seven top-three finishes in major road races over distances ranging from 10K to 25K. He is a nine-time All-American from the University of Oregon where he was third in the 5000 meters at back-to-back NCAA championships. Parker is the only person to win the 10,000 meters at the US Junior Championships three times. He also placed sixth at the IAAF Junior World Championships and won the Pan-Am Junior title. He currently holds a Marathon PR of 2:10:53. He is based out of Boulder, Colorado, where he runs for Roots Running, and has represented Saucony for his entire professional running career. In today's episode, Parker dives into his full story and paints the picture of where the sport has taken him; he dives into the ups, the downs, and everything in between. He shares untold stories such as almost retiring from the sport, and more. This is a top-five favorite podcast I've ever released. It's raw and emotional at times, but also entertaining and inspiring. Needless to say, this is one you will not want to miss. In fact, I'd be willing to bet you'll want to listen to it again after the first time. So, with all of that said, tap into the Parker Stinson Special. Today on the podcast is the man, the myth, the legend, Evan Jager. For those who aren't familiar with Evan, he is undoubtedly the greatest American at the 3000m Steeplechase ever. Evan won a Silver Medal in the steeplechase at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, won Bronze at the 2017 World Championships in London; he has the American Record in the 3,000m Steeplechase with a time of 8:00.45, and get this, he holds the top 9 spots on the U.S. Top 10 All-Time 3000m Steeple list. In high school, he won everything there was to win in Illinois high school competition, claiming titles in XC, 1600m, and 3200m, as well as anchoring the State Record 4x800m. He then went to the University of Wisconsin for one year before deciding to move to Portland to go all-in on his running career, moving with Coach Jerry Schumacher and being one of the original members of the now Bowerman Track Club. In today's conversation, Evan goes through his upbringing in the sport from winning a Mustang by breaking five minutes in the mile to setting state records along the way. He then discusses his professional career and all the different elements, the highs, and the lows, that have shaped who he is today. We also touch on his past year of being a dad, the craziest BTC workouts he's witnessed, and wether or not he thinks he has the best hair in Track & Field. Yared Nuguse. A name you've heard time and time again over the past few months as he's cemented his name into the history books. It all started in Boston, where Yared ran a new American Record in the 3k, clocking 7:28.24. He followed up that performance by running yet another American Record (and the second fastest time ever) with a 3:47.38 at the Millrose Games Wanamaker Mile. Lastly, Yared flew to Europe, where he won a 1500m against a world-class field. Needless to say, Yared is on fire, and I had to get him back on the podcast. Yared runs for the OAC (On Athletic's Club), is a graduate of The University of Notre Dame, where he won NCAA Championships and set an NCAA Record, and was an Olympian for the US in 2020. This conversation was insightful, impactful, hilarious, and a ton of fun. Yared documents his last seasons at Notre Dame and how he overcame setbacks and failure, signing with OAC, training with "heavy hitters," breaking two American Records this season, future goals for the rest of the year, sneaking his pet tortoise Tyro across the country, and who has the best dog on OAC (sorry, Gus.) Needless to say, through listening, you'll be inspired, motivated, and have many laughs along the way. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." Back on the podcast is the one and only Elise Cranny! Elise is an Olympian, and American Record Holder, but to me, she is a friend, mentor, and inspiration. The last time Elise was on the podcast was episode 50, so I thought, who better to have on 100ish episodes later than her. For those who aren't familiar, Elise runs for Nike's Bowerman Track Club and has slowly cemented herself as one of the greatest US Female Distance Runners of all time. Just within the past two years, Elise has won back-to-back US Championships in the 5k, made the Tokyo Olympics & Eugene World Championships, and set an American Record in the indoor 5k. In this conversation, Elise and I talk about comparison, reflection, being where your feet are, why finding your Why is crucial, if she'll write a book one day, and much more! Any conversation I have with Elise is insightful, and I always walk away inspired. Quite frankly, this didn't feel like a podcast; more like a normal phone call that just happened to be recorded and put out to the public. I'm incredibly confident you'll find value from today's podcast and walk away enlightened and impacted. "I always have to remind myself that a race is gonna be really hard!" Surely when Alicia Keys sang "this girl is on fire," she was referring (preemptively) to On Athletics Club's Alicia Monson. In 2021, Alicia became an Olympian in the 10K. In 2022, she represented Team USA at World Championships, again in the 10K. And just two months into 2023, the unstoppable streak continues: Alicia just broke the indoor 3000m American Record at the Millrose Games in New York City. Alicia lives and trains in Boulder, CO, where she is coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. In this conversation, she talks about training with OAC, about the team culture, and about why seemingly every member of the team is killing it right now. She also talks about how she has learned to stay focused, stay relaxed, and stay energized during races and hard workouts. (Check out this video for a perfect example.) And if you've ever thought you can't relate to the pros, rest assured, Alicia is one of us: Her on-the-run music of choice is The Greatest Showman soundtrack. I have the extreme privilege of speaking with Nicholas Thompson today. Nicholas is the current CEO at The Atlantic and the former Editor-in-Chief at Wired. He graduated from Stanford University, receiving degrees in Earth Systems, Political Science, and Economics. In addition to his accomplishments in business and life, Nick is quite the accomplished runner. On April 14, 2021, he set the American record in the 50k for the 45-49 age group after finishing the race in 3:04:36 (5:56 pace for 31.06 miles). He holds a marathon PR of 2:29, ranking him as one of the top master's runners in the world at the time. Perhaps, most impressive, Nick commutes to work by running every day through the heart of New York City. I loved exploring this practice with him, how it came about, and what it means to him. Nick and I discuss his upbringing in the sport, his marathon journey, run-commuting, and what lessons running has taught him. We also dive into his years at Philips Academy and Stanford University, questions surrounding building a strong culture and leading a successful team of individuals at The Atlantic, staying present, what books have been most impactful for him, and the principles of good writing. Lastly, he takes us through making breakfast for his kids every morning and what he'd make Gordon Ramsay for dinner. This conversation was a ton of fun, and very insightful. I learned a lot from Nick and left this conversation a better version of myself. I'm confident you will be inspired by Nick and how he lives his life, ultimately impacting you to live a better life. Today on the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with American distance running legend, Bob Kennedy. Bob won two OHSAA XC State Titles, was the 1987 national junior champion in cross country, and to this day holds the OHSAA Record for 1600m at 4:05:13. He then went on to The University of Indania, where he won the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championships becoming one of a few true freshman ever to win the event. Over the ensuing years, he won many more NCAA titles. After his collegiate years, he competed at the highest level making it to the Olympics more than once. He once held the American record in the 3000 meters (7:30.84), 2 miles (8:11.59), and the 5000 meters (12:58.21). Bob is undoubtedly one of the greatest American distance runners of all time. In this conversation, Bob and I dive deep into his upbringing in the sport and the different races that are most significant to him and his career. We discuss lessons he's learned, the attributes he sees most consistently in high-performing individuals, and much more! This conversation was a ton of fun, and I really enjoyed going back in time through this remarkable time period of Bob's life. Through Bob's personal experiences and knowledge, you will gain a deeper understanding of the mental and physical components of running and how to apply them to enhance your own running journey and ultimately improve the quality of your life. "To go out on top — there are so few athletes that can say that, and that really wasn't my plan! I just wanted to know when it would be over so that I could put everything that I had into each throw." Kara Winger had long planned for 2022 to be her final javelin season. And what a final season it was! The four-time Olympian capped off her 18-year international career by winning her first global medal (silver, at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, OR), and becoming the first U.S. woman to medal in the javelin at a world championships event. She set a new American record. She took the win at the Wanda Diamond League final. And, after 12 years, she finally broke her own personal record. In this conversation, Kara reflects on her career and on what it means to go out on top. She talks about the support she has felt in the track and field community, and about when she made the decision to retire. She talks about being chosen to be the Team USA flag bearer at last summer's Tokyo Olympic Games, and talks about the struggles she's faced with injuries (two ACL tears and a labrum tear in her left shoulder) and setbacks. Now, the Tracksmith-sponsored athlete will begin the next chapter of her career as the senior director for Parity, an organization dedicated to closing the gender pay gap in sports.
