We're back with Season Three! In this season opener, we dive deep into the relationship between UI/UX design and storytelling with Kat Craig, a talented UI/UX designer who has contributed to some major titles in the gaming world. Kat walks us through her career journey—from graphic design to breaking into the gaming industry—and shares how the user interface and user experience impact player immersion, engagement, and emotional connection to the game's narrative. We discuss the importance of creating seamless experiences for players, how UI elements can be used to enhance storytelling (think of games like Fallout with diegetic UI elements), and how to balance complexity with accessibility. Kat also shares her insights on collaborating with other disciplines—narrative, art, and design teams—to ensure that the player's journey through a game is intuitive and enriching. Key Takeaways: The essential role of UI/UX design in enhancing narrative experience. How the graphical design elements and environmental design can amplify storytelling. Insights into the balance between complexity and accessibility for diverse player bases. Real-world examples from Kat's work, including contributions to Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3. How networking, internships, and personal projects can help aspiring designers break into the industry. If you're a storyteller, game designer, or just someone curious about the behind-the-scenes work in game development, this episode will offer valuable insights that bridge the gap between design and narrative. As expected, the Xbox Developer_Direct is set to arrive soon and it will boast four games. Those titles are South Of Midnight, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and a mysterious fourth game that's rumored to be from a "legendary Japanese IP." Naturally, the Dukes have many guesses about that, but also if there will the be usual fifth game that shows up like it has since Developer Direct became a thing. We won't have to wait long to find out. What we'll need to wait a while for is if Xbox will survive beyond 2030. No, that's not hyperbole. Outlet The Information reports that the Xbox business was set to shutdown in 2021 unless Game Pass subscriptions went up. What the rest of the write-up depicts are spooky times for the Green Team as it seems more and more like these moves by Xbox are more for survivability. Oblivion Remake continues to be a horribly kept secret, so we get into some new gameplay details on that, and also into what's going on with Ubisoft as Assassin's Creed Shadows sees another delay.
If a AAA game studio is closed, was it ever a AAA studio? Netflix closed their AAA game studio before even announcing a project. The US Copyright Office declined a DMCA exception for Video Game Libraries looking to help researchers access their materials online. A Larian Studios executive made comments about Ubisoft's drive to be more subscription only after the new Prince of Persia was declared not profitable and the team disbanded. Then we talk to Rob about game preservation - which is a very hot topic for him. (Language alert!)

One of the reasons behind the immense popularity of this hit multiplayer roleplaying game is its incredible soundtrack. Today, we are joined by the Audio Director of Larian Studios — the makers of “Baldur's Gate 3” — Stefan Randelshofer, along with our guest host, Dolby's Senior Game Developer Relations Manager, Alistair Hirst, in a live discussion from this year's Game Developers Conference, to discuss what went into creating the rich, sonic atmosphere of the video game.“There is a complete architecture for 3D audio that allows you to listen to 3D audio objects. You can make that work automatically and you can facilitate those 3D audio objects and that gives you so many chances to be more immersed in what you're doing. In a world like Baldur's Gate, there's so much stuff going on. In the city, when people talk around you. You have a cool combat — if you have one of the spells fly by. So it really gives you the perspective of being there. Therefore, that was the reason for me to go into this Dolby setup”—Stefan Randelshofer, Audio Director, “Baldur's Gate 3”Be sure to check out “Baldur's Gate 3”, available on PC, Steam, and consoles. Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Sometimes I try to write clever little descriptions about the games on the show, but this week's game doesn't feel like it needs it.** Baldur's Gate 3, by **Larian Studios, excels in just about everything it sets out to do. It has impressive writing, almost unparalleled choice-based storytelling, memorable characters, a deep and engaging combat system, and tons of immersive sim elements that make each playthrough really feel like your own. It's one of the best games I've ever played, and I was joined by returning guests Jim Rodeman and Chris Rettig to discuss it!
