264. Cervical Cancer, Birth Control, Vulvar Pain, Gaslighting with Dr. Andrew Goldstein Dr. Goldstein was previously on Episodes 68 and 69! Go check out the back episodes. Dr. Goldstein is a gynecologist and is a past president of ISSWSH. He is a top world expert in vulvar pain and is actively involved in research and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters on female sexual dysfunction, sexual pain disorders, lichen sclerosis, lichen simplex chronicus, vulvodynia, and vulvar vestibulitis syndrome (vestibulodynia). Dr. Goldstein has a strong commitment to global medicine and is probably still jet lagged from his recent trip to Cambodia. In this episode of the You're Not Broken podcast, Dr. Andrew Goldstein discusses various topics related to women's health, including cervical cancer screening and prevention, the global impact of cervical cancer, dispelling myths about HPV vaccination, his book 'When Sex Hurts,' abstracts presented at Isswsh, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and pelvic pain, mast cell activation syndrome and vulvar pain, and the upcoming Vulvodynia Therapeutics Research Summit. The conversation covers the need for funding and collaboration in vulvodynia research, the potential of chemical vestibulotomy as a treatment, the impact of birth control on vulvar issues, the importance of pain control for procedures, and the issue of gaslighting and believing women's pain. Takeaways Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide, particularly in resource-poor countries where screening is lacking. Vaccination against HPV can prevent cervical cancer and other related cancers, but there is a need to increase vaccination rates globally. Misconceptions about HPV vaccination leading to increased sexual activity are unfounded, and vaccination is crucial for preventing HPV-related diseases. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and mast cell activation syndrome are emerging as significant contributors to vulvar and pelvic pain, and further research is needed to develop effective treatments. The Vulvodynia Therapeutics Research Summit aims to bring together experts to explore novel treatments for vulvodynia and improve patient outcomes. Funding and collaboration are crucial for advancing research on vulvodynia. Chemical vestibulotomy shows promise as a treatment for neuroproliferative vestibulodynia. Birth control can have an impact on vulvar issues, and it is important for healthcare providers to discuss potential side effects with patients. Pain control should be prioritized during procedures, such as IUD insertion. Women's pain needs to be believed and relieved, and gaslighting should be addressed in healthcare settings. https://vulvodynia.com/ https://www.gyncancer.org/ Solv Wellness To learn more about Solv Wellness and their products for female pelvic health, visit solvwellness.com for 30% off your first purchase of any product. One of the most exciting things about being an art journalist is that art as a subject is ridiculously protean: what it looks like is always changing, how we engage with it is always changing, and the role it plays in society is always changing too. What that means is that you constantly need to shift your perspective in order to see it properly. Searching for the correct lens on art, if you're really good and really lucky, sometimes you even get to name that lens, like Pop Art, for instance. Artnet News's national art critic Ben Davis has written an essay that illuminates a recent shift in art that has been making big waves among the cognoscenti. It's a new tendency that he calls quantitative aesthetics, and this week he joins Andrew Goldstein on the Art Angle podcast to discuss it.

Ever hear of a soup swap? It's like a cookie swap but for soup, and it's a fun and meaningful way to get people together around nourishing food.  Ellie attended one for the first time recently that was organized by friends who both happen to be community-focused health professionals. Vera Ruangtragool and Andrew Goldstein. In this episode they talk about why a soup swap has more layered wellness benefits than you might think, and how to go about organizing one. Vera Ruangtragool is the founder and director of Truly Well, a non-profit that helps individuals and communities build happy, healthy, and meaningful lives.  Vera leads guided meditation in English and Spanish and brings people together through events that foster meaningful social connection in the US and abroad. She has a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Spanish from UC Berkeley, a Master's degree in Spanish Translation and Interpretation from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and a Master's degree in Public Health from Columbia University. Through her work and everyday interactions, she is committed to advancing peace and justice through individual, community, and systemic change. Andrew Goldstein is a public hospital primary care doctor focused on activism and organizing for a variety of health justice issues. In the food arena, he believes access to healthy, delicious food is a right and has worked against cuts to food programs like SNAP, campaigned for taxes on ultra processed foods, and fought against the often harmful policy agendas of big food corporations. At the more personal and community levels, he organizes biking foodcrawls, food swaps, and pantry shares, and has supported food-related mutual aid efforts. Andrew was part of a college eating club whose motto was "Food = Love," which has stuck with him to this very day and which he tries to have his relationship with Vera embody, whether in their food explorations and cooking together, or in sharing food with their loved ones and neighborsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What does it mean to be an art critic today? How do you choose what to write about and how do you even choose what to look at in an age where seeing art in person, which used to be the most common way people encountered art, has now arguably become the rarest? In this episode, Andrew Goldstein speaks with Jerry Saltz, the most famous, most lionized, and arguably the most influential art critic we have. A self-described "failed artist" who only became a professional critic at age 41, Jerry wrote for the Village Voice, Artnet Magazine (the predecessor of Artnet News), and other publications before becoming New York's resident art critic in 2006, where he's been on a run of glory that has included winning the 2018 Pulitzer for criticism. But while he's well known for his exuberant, beautifully wrought criticism, he's even better known as what might be termed an "art critic in the expanded field." He shares his opinions every day with some half a million followers on Twitter and Instagram, alongside frequent TV appearances and a half dozen books, the latest of which, called Art is Life, has just been published by Riverhead Books.

Tammy brings her journey with Lichen Sclerosus and the experiences of many other women to light in this episode. We hear everything about what it's like to live with Lichen Sclerosus, its challenges, treatment options, and how to get support. What is Lichen Sclerosus? Lichen Sclerosus is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks itself. It is thought to be genetic. It usually occurs in the genitals, but can also affect other areas of the body, where it can cause itching and discoloration on the wrist, inner thighs and stomach. Lichen Sclerosus affects young and old women. Tammy's history with Lichen Sclerosus Tammy started experiencing extreme itching and burning beginning in her 20s. Others may experience visual symptoms like white patches of skin. At the age of 44, she was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosus after doing a punch biopsy. She believes stress and genetics played a role in her diagnosis. Shame and discomfort made it harder for her to find the right diagnosis and thus she emphasizes the importance of finding the right doctor. Impact on sex life Tammy warns people against looking up their condition online. She talks about how many women go through this process with unsupportive partners. Other than sexual and mental issues that make sex difficult, pain is a big factor. It can change the way your vulva looks when the labia of both sides fuse and are sometimes absorbed entirely. The vaginal opening can shrink, causing sex to be incredibly painful. Clitoral phimosis is a condition when your clitoral hood fuses with the clitoris making it less sensitive. Other than affecting your sex life directly, it makes even performing menial tasks extremely painful. Treatment options for Lichen Sclerosus Talking about her history, Tammy says she started off using triamcinolone, a moderate steroid. Clobetasol cream and ointment is the most common treatment that's specifically used for Lichen Sclerosus. Hydrocortisone is used to soothe itching. She talks about the “Mona Lisa touch” used by Dr. Andrew Goldstein who uses a specific machine to improve collagen production. While it may seem like a dermatological issue, many doctors don't seem to know much about it.
