In this episode, host Corey Nathan takes on one of the biggest challenges in today's society: toxic partisanship. He explores how political and social divisions have deepened, fueled by media, social networks, and entrenched ideological battles. But rather than just diagnosing the problem, Corey offers a powerful antidote—getting local and engaging in real-life, face-to-face conversations. He draws inspiration from scholars like Jonathan Haidt, Katherine Stewart and Robert Putnam, as well as his personal experiences, to make a compelling case for community-based solutions to polarization. What We Discuss ✅ The real extent of political division in America—and why it's not as bad as it seems ✅ How social media and national narratives exaggerate our differences ✅ The philosophy of Carl Schmitt and its impact on modern political discourse ✅ Why local engagement—like city council meetings, PTAs, and even bar conversations—is the key to bridging divides ✅ Practical steps to foster meaningful discussions and rebuild relationships Episode Highlights ⏳ [00:02:00] – The growing problem of toxic partisanship and how social media makes it worse ⏳ [00:05:00] – A study from More in Common shows Americans want unity, but doubt the other side does ⏳ [00:09:00] – Corey shares personal examples of online political attacks and how they reflect broader polarization ⏳ [00:14:00] – A key solution: Local engagement and organizations like Village Square ⏳ [00:17:00] – How shared community goals, like better roads and schools, help bridge ideological divides ⏳ [00:20:00] – The inspiring story of Joe Walsh and Fred Guttenberg: Two ideological opposites who became close friends ⏳ [00:23:00] – The challenge of engaging with people who seem beyond reach—and knowing when to step away ⏳ [00:26:00] – A call to action: Take the first step, invite someone for coffee, and start humanizing one another Featured Quotes

Since his daughter Jaime was killed, along with 16 others, in the 2018 mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, Fred Guttenberg has been an outspoken advocate for gun control. He's coming to Kansas City on Monday for a community forum hosted by Grandparents for Gun Safety.
Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh and Fred Guttenberg have strongly opposing political views. Walsh is an ardent gun rights advocate, and Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter was killed in the 2018 Parkland School shooting, is a prominent gun safety activist. In this recording from the Hopkins Bloomberg Center of the live discussion between the two, moderated by Leah Wright Rigueur, a SNF Agora Institute Associate Professor of History, we hear from Walsh and Guttenberg as they tell their story of how two people who are diametrically opposed on politics and policy can lower the temperature and start listening to one another. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today on Mea Culpa, I am honored to speak with Fred Guttenberg, who became a powerful voice for gun reform after the tragic death of his 14-year-old daughter, Jaime, in the Parkland mass shooting in 2018. Fred's public journey began at a vigil where his moving words captured the nation's attention and ignited his relentless advocacy for gun safety. In our discussion, Fred and I will explore the significance of the upcoming election for gun violence prevention, reflect on recent events like the school shooting in Georgia, and examine the support he has received from Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as his arrest during Trump's third State of the Union Address. The events of July 13, 2024 underscore the central question we've been asking on this program: How can we do better at talking about politics and religion without killing each other or is it even possible? In this special edition, we provide comments by several prior guests of TP&R as well as a number of other leaders from both parties. We included statements from David French, Monica Guzman on behalf of Braver Angels, Fred Guttenberg, former Congressman Joe Walsh, Elizabeth Neumann, Pete Wehner, Mike Madrid, and former Congressman Adam Kinzinger, all of whom have appeared on this podcast. We also shared statements from former President George W. Bush, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, President Joe Biden, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer. There are other posts that are counterproductive at best, and arguably dangerous, from the likes of Marco Rubio, J.D. Vance, Tim Scott and MTG. These are referred to but are not worth giving any credence as we choose to focus on, as David French puts it, "recover(ing) our sense of decency and basic respect for the humanity of our opponents..." at such a time as this. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/07/09/opinion/thepoint?smid=url-share#trump-shooting-healing-america https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/07/trump-pennsylvania/679004/ We're on Patreon! Had to share this one again partly because Fred's beloved Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup Champs! (The same Florida Panthers who beat Corey's favorite team, the New York Rangers, in the Eastern Conference Final.) But this wasn't just a conversation that brought rivals across hockey loyalties together; it brought together "Two Dads Defending Democracy," Fred Guttenberg and Joe Walsh, who are helping to bridge the gap during divisive times... Once sworn enemies in TV appearances and on social media, Fred Guttenberg and Joe Walsh got together privately and realized there is much that unites them. They are now on a tour of college campuses hoping to share their success in bridge-building with others divided by hate.
The division in this nation is everywhere. It's not just between Democrats and Republicans. Divisions are deep inside formerly unified fronts, and these divisions seem to eat at the fabric of our society. Our guests this week are trying to change that. Joe Walsh is a former Republican Congressman. Fred Guttenberg's daughter Jaime was killed in the Parkland shooting. They have very different views on specific issues, but through their work as Two Dads Defending Democracy, they are working to protect us all. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message
Joe Walsh, a former U.S. Representative from Illinois, and Fred Guttenberg, a businessman-turned-activist following his daughter's murder in the 2018 Parkland school shooting, went from arguing with each other on social media and television to engaging in meaningful dialogue. The “Two Dads” forged a friendship through patience and civil discourse, demonstrating how people from opposite ends of the political spectrum can find common ground on contentious issues such as gun safety.

We welcome my good friend, Fred Guttenberg back to our show. Fred became an anti-gun violence activist when his beautiful 14-year-old daughter Jaime was murdered in a mass shooting at Parkland High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on February 14, 2018. His son, Jesse, also a student at the school survived. And since Fred has become one of the strongest voices for gun safety in the country. He has sued gun manufacturers, worked with members of Congress on legislation, and advocated against the NRA. And Fred has spoken at countless events and on-air, having to relive his daughter's murder in hopes of creating change for all of our children. He's written two great books, “Find the Helpers” and “American Carriage”, and Fred's here today to tell us how it's going on the front lines of the gun safety debate. We are seeing increasing calls for violence around the country, an incitement to violence by Trump and his compatriots, and an overall threat to our democracy and our public safety with the stockpiling of weapons and ammunition to use against a government, or fellow citizens, with whom people disagree. Join me, and well known public safety advocate Fred Guttenberg, as we talk about these threats and about giving Americans the tools to move off this platform of lies and onto a platform of facts and action. The gun violence we're seeing in America is actually pretty new. It wasn't always like this, and it doesn't have to be like in the future. The choice is ours. 46,000 deaths in America, every single year. We have more guns than people in the United States. And yet somehow, many states across the country are working to make it easier to get guns, easier to carry guns, and easier to kill people without consequence. This is partly because of the lies of the gun industry. To help us sort through the myths and find the truth, we've invited one of my favorite humans back on the show. Fred Guttenberg's daughter Jaime was murdered in the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas school shooting in 2018. Since then, Fred has been one of the world's leading voices in gun violence prevention. He is the co-author of the new book American Carnage, which is now available. Editorial Reviews Review “American Carnage by authors Thomas Gabor and Fred Guttenberg is a must read. Fred, like far too many Americans, understands gun violence because of the murder of his daughter Jaime. His work with Thomas Gabor to take on the myths around guns and gun violence in America and to present an evidence-based approach has resulted in a book that should be read by everyone who cares about this issue.” ―Congressman Eric Swalwell, US Representative to California's 15th congressional district “This book, one I will go back to many times, gives you every essential tool to become a well-informed member of a club I want you to join: committed citizens lifting their voices for the lifesaving changes to gun laws the vast majority of Americans want.” ―Steve Kerr, son, husband, father, grandfather, and head coach of the Golden State Warriors “Let me say at the outset that Fred Guttenberg and I agree on very little when it comes to gun policy. But we listen to each other and we constantly search for common ground. This book written by Thomas Gabor and Fred Guttenberg is an important one. And even though I disagree with some of what's written here, I recommend this book to anyone interested in saving lives. Fred and Tom make a passionate & evidenced-based case for facts to consider when pursuing certain reforms, which I'm sure will spur further passionate debate on this issue between us. I highly recommend American Carnage.” ―Former Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois's 8th district “There's no single voice more important in the conversation in America about gun safety and avoiding the unthinkable tragedy of losing a child to gun violence than Fred Guttenberg. Fred's voice rings like a clarion in American Carnage where he, along with Thomas Gabor, explores the crucially important issue of misinformation when it comes to gun violence. The assault on truth spreads through every aspect of American politics, and there is no issue more uniquely American or deadly than gun violence. American Carnage is an essential read on one of the most important issues of our time.” ―Nicolle Wallace, host of Deadline: White House on MSNBC and former White House communications director “There are few issues in American life where the stakes are as high as gun violence, nor where the steps to prevent it are more straightforward. Virtually every American wants to see changes put in place to strengthen our laws and enforcement mechanisms to make gun violence more rare. Yet, those changes have been much harder to enact than popular sentiment would dictate. Why is that? Tom Gabor and Fred Guttenberg lay out why in this exceptional book, which explains the lies, half-truths, and myths propagated by the gun industry to fight common sense gun laws and to sell as many guns as possible, no matter the lives lost or cost to our society. For those of us in the gun violence prevention movement―which is all Americans wanting a safer country where gun violence is rare―this book provides all you need to break through those lies and mistruths, and help lead and participate in conversations that can result in real change, where public safety laws are advanced that protect all Americans from gun violence.” ―Kris Brown, president of Brady, United Against Gun Violence --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

One Trump-appointed judge in Texas is likely about to ban an abortion pill used by millions of Americans. And the ban won't just affect women in Texas… it'll affect all of us across the country, even in blue states. The ruling was expected to be released as early as Friday the 24th, so we wanted to make sure we talked today about this case and why it's so important. This isn't the first attack on our reproductive freedoms, and it won't be the last, which is why it's so important to pay attention and to talk to our friends. We're saving the world, one brunch at a time! We're joined by Representative Dr. Anita Somani, who shares her wisdom and knowledge both as an OB-GYN and a state representative in Ohio. Dr. Anita talks about why this ban is dangerous, what we can tell our friends and neighbors about the pill, and how reproductive rights inspired her to run for office. And after that, Amanda sits down with Angela Vasquez-Giroux of NARAL Pro-Choice America. Angela and Amanda chat about what exactly is going on with this case in Texas, what we can do about it, and what gives her hope. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to the people of Ukraine, to community support after a hard week, and to celebrating birthdays by giving back in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”Here at Red Wine & Blue, we believe in the power of conversations. It's our distinct honor to have Fred Guttenberg as our guest today on Mea Culpa. Fred is the father of Jaime, a 14-year-old girl killed during the Parkland mass shooting in 2018. Fred began his public life directly after the murder of his beautiful daughter when he decided to attend a public vigil in Parkland. While there, the Mayor asked him to speak. His words shook a nation and he has not stopped ever since. Michael and Fred discuss gun violence, gun control, and the state of politics in Florida.
