Since the beginning of the Trump administration, the U.S.-Mexico border and immigration policy have been front and center in public conversation. However, a humanitarian crisis at the border is nothing new. Jeh Johnson was the Secretary of Homeland Security during President Obama's second term, from late 2013 to 2017. He ran the agency during a tense period—when tens of thousands of unaccompanied migrant children and families were arriving at the border to claim asylum. Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa sits down with Jeh Johnson for a candid, and at times tense, conversation about the legacy of immigration policies implemented while he was in office. This episode originally aired in June of 2019.
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (11/15/2023): 3:05pm- On Monday, Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) announced that the state of New York will begin a massive data collection effort targeting social media accounts. Hochul explained the purpose of this new government surveillance program is “to counter some of the negativity and reach out to people.” Bizarrely, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley echoed a similarly disturbing sentiment regarding social media usage while appearing on Fox News—arguing that social media accounts should no longer be anonymous and that accounts need to be verified with the user's names and other identifying information. You can read more here: https://news.yahoo.com/nikki-haleys-crazy-plan-require-150320028.html 3:15pm- In response to Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley's bizarre call for ending anonymity online, her supporters pointed to a tweet from Donald Trump on May 24th, 2013, where he joked: “It should be mandatory that all haters and losers use their real name or identification when tweeting—they will no longer be so brave!” An end to anonymity online would be disastrous. As Rich notes, the essays that comprise The Federalist Papers were written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay under the pseudonym “Publius.” 3:30pm- On Wednesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified before a House Homeland Security subcommittee. During the hearing, Director Wray conceded that individuals on the terror watch list may have crossed into the United States illegally. Congressman Michael Guest (R-MS) noted that in 2019, former DHS Sec. Jeh Johnson referred to 1,000 illegal border crossing “overwhelms the system.” With thousands of migrants entering the U.S. illegally on a daily basis throughout the Biden Administration, Rep. Guest asked Sec. Mayorkas how many crossing—in his estimations—would be considered overwhelming? 3:50pm- During Wednesday's House Homeland Security subcommittee, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX) quoted 18 U.S.C. Section 2 (a): “whoever commits an offense against the United States or aids, and abets, counsels, commands, induces or procures its commission, is punishable as the principal.” He then accused Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of “aiding and abetting” criminals that have exploited the Biden Administration's relaxed border security policies. 4:05pm- Pacific Legal Foundation Senior Attorney Brian Hodges joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Sheetz v. County of El Dorado—a property rights case which will be reviewed by United States Supreme Court. The Pacific Legal Foundation writes: “The government can't hold the right to use your property hostage in order to extract exorbitant fees. That's akin to extortion… Permit fees must be proportional to the public costs imposed by new development. Otherwise, the government may leverage the permit process to take property it is not entitled to, skirting the Constitution's Fifth Amendment prohibition against taking private property without just compensation.” You can read more about the case here: https://pacificlegal.org/case/sheetz-permit-extortion-scotus/ 4:15pm- Joe Lancaster of Reason writes: “When a state gives away tax money to a private company in an attempt to sway its business decisions, the least that a taxpayer can hope for is some openness in the process. Unfortunately, the state of Michigan's economic development agency is actively preventing transparency, leaving questions on how the state plans to spend billions of taxpayer dollars unanswered.” Could Michigan lawmakers signing a nondisclosure agreements impact how those lawmakers vote? As of March 2022, Johnson also hosts a classic R&B radio show on FM public radio station WBGO, 88.3FM, based in Newark, NJ. As Secretary of Homeland Security, Johnson was the head of the third largest cabinet department of the U.S. government, consisting of 230,000 personnel and 22 components, including TSA, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Services, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and FEMA. Johnson's responsibilities as Secretary included counterterrorism, cybersecurity, aviation security, border security, port security, maritime security, protection of our national leaders, the detection of chemical, biological and nuclear threats to the homeland, and response to natural disasters. In three years as Secretary of DHS, Johnson is credited with management reform of the Department, which brought about a more centralized approach to decision-making in the areas of budgets, acquisition and overall policy. Johnson also raised employee morale across the Department, reflected in the September 2016 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. As General Counsel of the Department of Defense, Johnson is credited with being the legal architect for the U.S. military's counterterrorism efforts in the Obama Administration. In 2010, Johnson co-authored the report that paved the way for the repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell by Congress later that year. In his book Duty, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates wrote that Johnson "proved to be the finest lawyer I ever worked with in government - a straightforward, plain-speaking man of great integrity, with common sense to burn and a good sense of humor." According to published reports, Johnson provided the opinion that was the legal basis for U.S. special forces to enter Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden on May 1, 2011. Johnson is a 2022 recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, a 2021 recipient of the American Lawyer's Lifetime Achievement Award, as “an American statesman [who] has devoted his career to the public interest,” and a 2018 recipient of the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Award, presented at the Reagan Presidential Library, for “contribut[ing] greatly to the defense of our nation,” and “guiding us through turbulent times with courage and wisdom.” In 2020 the Chief Judge of New York State asked Johnson to conduct a comprehensive review of equal justice in the New York State courts. On October 1, 2020 Johnson issued a public report with his findings and recommendations, all of which the Chief Judge has committed to adopting. Johnson has debated at both the Cambridge and Oxford Unions in England, and in November 2019 was conferred honorary life membership in the Cambridge Union. Johnson is a graduate of Morehouse College (1979) and Columbia Law School (1982) and the recipient of 13 honorary degrees. Johnson married “the girl next-door,” literally, Dr. Susan DiMarco, in 1994. Susan is a retired dentist, a volunteer at the southern border and in numerous other activities, and, at the request of the U.S. Navy, is the sponsor of the Virginia-class submarine USS NEW JERSEY (SSN-796). In February 2023, Johnson and his family history were profiled on an episode of PBS' Finding Your Roots. During the course of our conversation, he also covers his family history as unearthed by Henry Louis Gates on Finding Your Roots, how he approached managing the Department of Homeland Security, concerns about cybersecurity and AI and his love for classic R&B which he features on his radio show.
Today's show illustrates what a real-time PsyOp propaganda campaign with a healthy dose of gaslighting thrown in for good measure looks like. All we need to do is show you how the Left and the MSM decided to report that last two days of illegal crossings versus the full week leading up, let alone the last two years. To start the show, we get snarky and ridiculous comments from President Joe Biden, VP Kamala Harris and a headline from the Washington Post. Just listening to them or reading, you'd think the border has never been better and more secure. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas took a victory lap on CNN's State of the Union, taking pride in a 50% reduction of illegals over the weekend. They completely ignored the record breaking daily numbers and even though we are still at 5000 a day for the past two, they want you to think that's hardly worthy noticing. They are gaslighting us in real-time. To show you how bad that number is, I go back to 2019 when former Obama DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson was on MSNBC. At that time, they were talking about a surge of 4000 illegals in one day under the Trump administration. Jeh Johnson stated over a 1000 a day overwhelms the system. So, four years ago, more than 1000 arrests a day was overwhelming, but today, Biden, Harris and Mayorkas want you to think 5000 a day is business as usual and nothing worth noting. Even looking at the Got-Away numbers from Border Patrol, we have seen a dramatic rise, month-to-month since Biden came into office. The numbers were around 9,500 a month and now are more than 64,000 a month. That's over and above the ones captured and processed. No matter how they try to present it, we have a massive crisis that I believe is happening by design. They want a permanent and dependent under-class to keep them in power for the rest of their lives. My next topic deals with the current investigations into the Biden Crime Family Syndicate. President Biden had an angry and confusing response to being asked about his own corruption. Apparently, Donald Trump lives rent-free in Biden's head. On a concerning note, Rep. James Comer (R-KY) admitted that many of the whistleblowers/informants they are relying on are either missing or unavailable. It's distressing to hear how these folks are being intimidated, threatened or are disappearing before the investigation is even complete. Biden managed to outdo himself with a hateful and bigoted speech delivered to Howard University. He regurgitated the talking point that White Supremacy is the biggest terrorist threat we face as a nation. That is a ridiculous lie and one meant to divide and disparage all Americans. Gunny J Wells took to TikTok and had something to say about that. Finally, we get a short installment of Deep Thoughts with VP Kamala Harris. She never ceases to provide us with some solid, head-scratching, word-salad when she's allowed to speak off-the-cuff to an audience. Worrying news from Iran, where the UN's nuclear watchdog has found near bomb-grade levels of uranium. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit davidlat.substack.comJeh Johnson, currently co-head of the Cybersecurity and Data Protection practice at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, has had a truly remarkable career in law and public service. Over the past four decades, he has gone back and forth between Paul Weiss, one of the nation's leading law firms, and the federal government. He has served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1989-1991), General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force (1998-2001), General Counsel of the Department of Defense (2009-2012), and finally, Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017).I first met Jeh (pronounced “Jay”) Johnson when he was GC of the Department of Defense (“DoD”) and I profiled him for Above the Law. At the time, he told me he thought it would be his last position in public service. But President Barack Obama had other ideas: in 2013, he asked Johnson to join his Cabinet as Secretary of Homeland Security. From December 2013 until January 2017, Johnson led the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”), a sprawling agency with some 22 components and 230,000 employees, and helped keep the United States safe.Remembering fondly our 2011 conversation, and eager to hear about his time as a Cabinet official, I reached out to Secretary Johnson late last year to invite him on the podcast. He kindly agreed, and in our conversation last month, we discussed everything from his being an academic “late bloomer”; what he's most proud of from his time in public life (interestingly enough, not a specific success like the Osama bin Laden operation or the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell); and his advice on mentorship (specifically, how to be a good mentee). My timing for posting this episode turned out to be excellent: just yesterday, DHS unveiled Secretary Johnson's official portrait, a tribute to his service to the Department and to the nation. Congratulations to Secretary Johnson on this honor, and thanks to him for his long and dedicated service to our country.Show Notes:Jeh Charles Johnson bio, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLPDHS Unveils Secretary Jeh Johnson Official Portrait, U.S. Department of Homeland SecurityAn Afternoon With Jeh Johnson, General Counsel of the Defense Department, by David Lat for Above the LawPrefer reading to listening? These pundits or talking heads are not unbiased and as you will see in this report, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CBS and others do not clarify their deliberate conflict of interest. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom welcomes Tom Homan, former acting ICE Director, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss the changing tides on immigration under the Biden administration. Dom first asks Homan to predict what we'll see by May as waves of migrants continue to come to the border, with the Biden administration doing everything in their power to keep an open door for illegal immigrants. Homan gives some ominous figures as the borders continue to be overloaded, agreeing with others including former DHS Secretary under Obama, Jeh Johnson, saying that the Biden administration approach to the border is literally unsustainable. Then, Giordano and Homan try to determine why the Democrats continue to keep headstrong on pro-immigration policies even with the negative detriments, with Homan suggesting that the Left only does this to strengthen political chances moving forward. Then, after spending some time continuing the discussion on immigration, producer Dan takes over the Dom Giordano Program for some Dan Time with Dom, discussing the introduction of Cracker Jill to go along with the legendary Cracker Jack snack, a potential Biden wedding at the White House, and the Pennsylvania transgender sports bill.
