Hello Rank Squad! After one of the most intriguing, exhausting, exhilarating semi-finals that the competition has ever seen, Inter will be in the final after finally dispatching Barcelona with a knockout blow, just moments after they had dragged themselves off the canvas themselves. 4-3 on the night, 7-6 on aggregate, this was one of the best games of football we have seen in many a long year, two sides who just traded punches for 210 minutes until a victory bell was finally rung, in favour of the home side. We discuss the momentum swings of a game that saw Inter take a 2-0 lead, before going down 3-2 with just moments to go, the late equaliser from the most unlikely of sources - Francesco Acerbi - before more drama in added time saw Davide Frattesi once more come up with the goods to send Simone Inzaghi's weathered old warriors to Munich - where they will face one of PSG or Arsenal. There's also some talk about what the future outlook is for a Barcelona side who have come a long way this year, and who perhaps just lacked a tad of experience when it mattered most, as well as why Inter feel like this could be there year to claim a long-awaited European crown - it's been 15 years since that famous night in Madrid. All that, and loads more, including Dean's experience watching Beckham & Friends on Paramount, on the show. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Hello Rank Squad! That was absolutely breathless and chaotic, and so the podcast looking back at it is too. We try our best to get to the bottom of an anarchic game of football between Barcelona and Inter that started fast and got wilder from there, and one that ended with the two teams locked at three goals apiece. We discuss how Inter might well go home the happier side, even if Barcelona had the best of the chances; Lamine Yamal's dazzling performance in Blaugrana; the importance of Denzel Dumfries and Marcus Thuram's returns from injury; why the game played out as it did; how they could possibly replicate it in the second leg; the differing waves of emotion throughout the game - and of course, we rank the goals because that's what we do. There's loads more inside as well, so get stuck in! It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

It's time for The Truth!Today, Sam and Dougie are looking at Serie A, and examining just how tight the race for the title is between Antonio Conte's Napoli and Simone Inzaghi's Inter - with both teams on 71 points with five games remaining in the league campaign. We discuss the distinct possibility of a playoff game between the two at the end of the season, a one-game shootout to determine who lifts that famous trophy in May.Then there's a deeper dive into both teams - the chaos that seems to always engulf Napoli has gone nowhere under the stewardship of Antonio Conte, with fiery pre-match interviews just the norm at this point in the city on the verges of Vesuvius. But that's sometimes a good thing, and with Scott Francis McTominay banging in important goal after important goal, and Romelu Lukaku leading the Serie A assist charts, you'd have to say it's working. Over in Milan, the Nerazzurri seem to be running out of puff at exactly the wrong point of the season. With their hopes of a treble dashed, is there a chance that they end up trophyless in what had looked to be a historic season in blue and black? Is their incredibly busy schedule catching up with them, and how do they wrest back control? Napoli or Inter? Decided in the normal way or with an extraordinary one-off event? And are the twists and turns done yet in Italy? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hello Rank Squad! Dean's back in London, so it's less of a Transatlantic Job this week, but that doesn't mean there's not still plenty to discuss. Today, we're looking at the Champions League Quarter Finalists, but in a slightly different way - examining who the most important player is for each of the eight teams remaining in the competition, from the perspectives of how they've played so far, as well as who is most likely to step up going forward. We take the eight teams in turn ahead of their QF matchups, thinking about star performers across the course of the competition, but also about which player their opposition would remove from these games if they were given a choice to do so - giving us some interesting names and discussions around how we rank players in systems. We finish by trying to pick a top three each, but we found that was a harder task than either of us envisaged to begin with! It's Ranks!

Hello Rank Squad! In a bit of a break from tradition, and after witnessing an absorbing encounter between Liverpool and PSG at Anfield, we decided this week might be a good one to switch things up and discuss the thing everyone will be discussing come Wednesday morning - the action from the Champions League, so this is the first of two UCL Takeaway episodes that will be with you this week. We start on Merseyside, where football reminded us it's a funny old game. Liverpool were outmatched in Paris last Wednesday, but came away with a 1-0 win against PSG; but on a night where they gave a far better account of themselves at home, they ended up losing the game 1-0 and being knocked out on penalties. Work that one out. We give PSG their due for a mighty performance over two legs, and discuss just how far this very talented side could go in this competition, as well as looking at what Liverpool might have done differently, and where the squad might need to be strengthened to push forwards again next season. Then in Part Two, we move over to the rest of the action, dissecting Barcelona's 3-1 win over Benfica where Lamine Yamal and Raphinha set some more records, as well as Pedri's astounding performance in the heart of midfield. We touch on Bayern, who Dean correctly backed in our power ranking episode, and how Leverkusen melted in the heat of the knockout stages; and finish with Inter, who made light work of Feyenoord even with a heavily rotated squad, and who are ticking along nicely in this competition. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content - after an incredible week in the Champions League that saw Champions crumble, new powers rising, goals galore & some shock results. We start with Wednesday's action, opening with the breathless end to things in Eindhoven - where the USMNT's Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi fired up an incredible late comeback that saw their side overcome Shakhtar Donetsk at the death. Then it's on to Anfield, where Liverpool made light work of an out-of-sorts Madrid, lacking Vinicius and a few others. We discuss Mbappe's struggles, how Liverpool maintained perfect control, the midfield 'battle' and Conor Bradley's breakout performance. We also discuss a calamitous own goal from Cameron Carter-Vickers at Celtic Park, rescued by a brilliant Daezen Maeda strike at the other end; the drama at the finale of Aston Villa's 0-0 draw with Juventus; a brilliant game between two excellent sides in Benfica and Monaco; Jamie Gittens' star turn in Dortmund's impressive win over Dinamo Zagreb; a stunning Champions League performance from Lille's Ngal'ayel Mukau; and shock results in the early kickoffs as Sturm Graz beat Girona and Crvena Zvezda hammered Stuttgart in Belgrade. Then in Part Two, we're onto Tuesday's action, which begins witha deep dive into City's unthinkable collapse against Feyenoord which put all the worst fears of City fans into a stark perspective - this is real and it's happening. What next for Pep's men, and could they possibly turn it round in the most unlikely of locations - Anfield? We talk a bit of a strange blockbuster game between Bayern Munich and PSG and where both teams are right now, before heading over to Lisbon to discuss Arsenal's demolition of Sporting, which was one of the best performances we've seen under Mikel Arteta as all the parts finally click into place for the Gunners. Jack installs Inter as his favourites to win the competition following their incredibly mature win over struggling RB Leipzig; we look at a big night for Robert Lewandowski as Barcelona beat Brest 3-0; discuss Atalanta's 6-1 mauling of Young Boys and insist you don't write them off; ponder why Milan keep making things so hard for themselves, even in a 3-2 win in Bratislava; and end with quick discussions on hammerings handed out by both Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid. Hello Rank Squad! In the wake of the injury to Rodri that looks set to keep him out for the majority of the season, it got us thinking about a topic that's been a bit of a Ranks staple down the years - who is the most important player for a variety of teams across Europe? We start in the Premier League, examining options for Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, before turning our attention to the continent to discuss the contenders for that crown for PSG, Milan, Inter, Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich. There's plenty of debate across almost every club, which is natural for a topic as subjective as this one, but we dive deep into the options as we try and work out not who is the best player at each of these European giants, but who is the one that they simply could not live without. It's Ranks! We kick things off by discussing Kylian Mbappé's broken nose in the France-Austria game, how many games he will miss, and if it opens up an opportunity for young Bradley Barcola off the left wing, who replaced Mbappé for long periods in the PSG season just gone by. Then it's on to England, where some of our Patreons (and Dean) are pretty happy with what they saw from the Three Lions in the opening win against Serbia, whilst others want more from this England team - and from Gareth Southgate, who is in charge. We chat through the brilliant narrative of Christian Eriksen scoring on his return to the Euros with Denmark, before turning our attention to Germany, who won 5-1 against Scotland on the opening night. Nagelsmann's fluid attack is a talking point, as well as whether Germany's use of Niclas Füllkrug could be crucial to breaking open certain games in this competition. Hungary are up next, and we talk whether being tipped to do well perhaps piled pressure onto them, and how they can move forward, as well as giving some love to Switzerland's majestic midfield pair of Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler. Onwards to Italy, who Jack was impressed by in their comeback win over Albania, and there's some more praise on the podcast for the ever-brilliant Nicola Barella, before we discuss if Albania can feel confident coming into their game against Croatia, and give some love to Spain - especially the performances of Lamine Yamal, Dani Carvajal and Fabian Ruiz. And we wrap things up by talking about the Netherlands and whether Ronald Koeman's stubbornness is a blessing or a curse, big up what was an incredible performance from Romania, and look at whether they can continue that form against a Belgium side now under huge pressure after their shock loss against Slovakia. It's Ranks!
