The UK has announced hugely ambitious plans - clean power by 2030. This will involve a massive roll-out of wind, onshore and offshore, solar as well as an expansion of grids and storage. A challenge, certainly. But not impossible, according to Jonathan Brearley, the chief executive of Ofgem, the UK's energy market regulator. The CEO also explains why the watchdog thinks zonal, rather than national pricing is the best way forward for the country. In the first episode of Plugged In: the energy news podcast we discuss how the country can meet its targets, the obstacles that stand in the way and why the UK is not close to running out of gas. In fact, the UK will need gas in the future, albeit in a significantly less dependent way, according to Ofgem.Host: Richard Sverrisson - Editor-in-Chief, Montel News.Guest: Jonathan Brearley, Chief Executive Officer, Ofgem; Laurence Walker, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Montel News.

Ukraine has passed the long-awaited mobilization law. It aims to ensure that Ukraine's army has more people, as it faces hundreds of thousands of newly mobilized soldiers on the Russian side. Ukraine's army, on the contrary, lacks personnel. But will this law solve Ukraine's problems? Particular criticism was voiced at the fact the law doesn't provide conditions for demobilization. This means that soldiers who are on the frontline don't know when they will come back home. This is our weekly roundup of key events and trends in and around Ukraine. Over the last week AMD has been extolling the virtues of its latest kit, including the MI300 which Su's crew claim is the fastest AI processing package on the market. The market for AI accelerators is projected to reach $400 billion by 2027 and Nvidia and AMD are the two biggest ponies in the race. With a forecast $400 billion in sales up for grabs in the next four years, this could be a very lucrative duopoly unless someone else shakes up the market.Which is going to be difficult, since it's not just a matter of building a faster processor. Memory is much more important for AI workloads and packaging the units is also a major bottleneck that suppliers are struggling to deal with. As it is almost all of 2024's chip runs from both partners have probably been reserved by customers. The Next Platform's co-editor Timothy Prickett Morgan and The Register's own Tobias Mann were both on the ground in Santa Clara for the launches and share their take on the new technology, and how the market is going to develop. It's clear the supply shortage isn't going to clear in the next year or so, and are AMD and Nvidia in a rush to see things change? Warning: May contain sarcasm.Moderation is provided by The Register's US editor Iain Thomson and the show, and its accompanying podcast, is by our Deputy Editor in Chief (and The Next Platform's co-founder) Nicole Hemsoth Prickett. On October 15, Polish voters elected a new parliament, with a broad opposition coalition led by ex-Prime Minister Donald Tusk winning a majority of seats, according to official results published on Tuesday. If the opposition coalition is able to form a government, it will mean the end of the eight-year rule of the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party. Under PiS, press freedom in Poland came under increasing pressure, with the government borrowing from the illiberal playbook of Hungary's Viktor Orbán. A report published by IPI and its MFRR partners last month documented how media capture and the widespread use of vexatious lawsuits have been used to create a hostile climate for independent journalism in the country. PiS was also widely seen as undermining the rule of law and judicial independence in Poland, which sparked an ongoing conflict with the EU. This edition of MFRR in Focus explores what the opposition's victory might mean for press freedom and the rule of law in Poland. Our guest is Aleksandra Sobczak, deputy editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland's leading daily newspaper, which had a clear pro-opposition editorial line and has been vocal in its support for media freedom. Guests: Aleksandra Sobczak, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Gazeta Wyborcza. Producer and Host: Karol Łuczka, Eastern Europe Advocacy and Monitoring Officer at IPI. Editor: Javier Luque, Head of digital communications at IPI. Localization is essential due to the diversity of local conditions and priorities across regions in both the developed and developing world, local disagreements over priorities, competing interests, trade-offs, and synergies among multiple sectors and stakeholders, and country- and region-specific risks posed by future uncertainties. However, current SDG localization efforts are hampered by lack of appropriate institutional support (especially the participation of local communities), future uncertainties and risk, limited interactions between science and practice communities, and limited communication among countries and regions. To support localizing SDGs, the International Water Resources Association is increasing support to SDG implementation through a task force committee (TFC) on Water & SDGs. The overall goal of the TFC is to downscale WATer-relevant SDGs (DWAT-SDGs) to the country/region, basin, and local scales to facilitate SDG realization and support sustainable management of water resources in a climate crisis. This session will allow member countries to exchange existing tools and case studies linked to SDG 6 implementation and will develop suggestions and partnerships for expanding SDG 6 localization, making an important contribution to the Water Action Agenda. Preclinical studies precede most clinical trials. They help identify criteria for evaluating human safety, including signs and symptoms that should be monitored closely during early clinical trials. The importance of these preclinical studies in intensive care medicine starts from developing the new surgical procedures, hands-on training to new medical devices, and prescription drugs. To have more insights into preclinical research and real examples of translation of such research in clinical practice, we have interviewed Dr Marcin Osuchowski, an expert in the field. Speakers Marcin OSUCHOWSKI. Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology, The Research Center in Cooperation with AUVA; Deputy Editor-In-Chief of the ESICM ICMx Journal. Denise BATTAGLINI.
