The superstructure bridge deck parts of the River Suir Sustainable Transport Bridge in Waterford, Ireland - designed by Knight Architects in collaboration with Roughan & O'Donovan as lead Engineer and Hardesty & Hanover as M&E Engineer - have now been successfully installed. The 207m-long pedestrian and cycle bridge is a centrepiece of the €200million Waterford North Quays Infrastructure Project, Ireland's largest urban regeneration initiative. Commissioned by Waterford City & County Council and constructed by BAM, the crossing will create a vital active travel connection across the River Suir when it opens to the public in 2026, linking the historic city centre to the Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) at the North Quays. The bridge forms a critical component in unlocking the SDZ's potential for private sector-led regeneration, including new homes, offices, hospitality, and public amenities. Spanning the river with a quiet elegance, the bridge pays tribute to the city's vibrant trading legacy and its deep-rooted connection to the majestic River Suir. The structure's subtle curves and faceted steel superstructure take inspiration from Waterford's celebrated tradition of crystal glassware, while its twin-leaf bascule span - concealed discreetly within the deck - ensures continued navigability of the river for marine traffic. Above each of the feature piers, the bridge deck widens to form generous viewing platforms, furnished with bespoke seating to invite pause and reflection over the Suir and its evolving surroundings. Designed for multi-modal use, the bridge will facilitate pedestrians and cyclists, forming a new section of urban greenway that ultimately links the Waterford to Dungarvan and Waterford to New Ross Greenways. The bridge design is also future proofed to facilitate a future electric shuttle bus connecting the north and south quays. To ensure efficient movement on the bridge coupled with safe transitions at the end, Knight Architects designed a new urban realm at the South Plaza landing site which features an array of surfaces which help intuitively guide pedestrians and cyclists in the right direction. This area activates the waterfront and integrates the area's wider active mobility network, further enhancing the public realm of Ireland's oldest city. In addition to enhancing local transport, the project aligns with Ireland's climate goals by encouraging modal shift and reducing car dependency. Tom Osborne, Director at Knight Architects, says: "This bridge does far more than connect two sides of a river. It connects the past with the future, catalysing the transformation of Ireland's oldest city whilst responding sensitively to its historic cultural and urban context. It represents a bold and forward-looking investment in the city's future and will act as a key enabler for the North Quays development, bringing new homes, jobs and cultural offerings to Waterford. It's been a privilege to help shape a structure that so clearly demonstrates the value of sustainable, people-centred infrastructure."
This week's episode of Ours to Protect focuses on Biodiversity. Ellie heads to Carrick-on-Suir for a Bat Walk, chats to Michael Long from the Cabragh Wetlands and the green school committee students of Presentation Primary School Clonmel.
Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 6ú lá de mí an Mheithimh, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1975 tháinig an nuacht amach go mbeadh an phacáiste comhrialtas chun dífhostaíocht a laghdú agus go mbeadh boilsciú ann, agus bhí plé cráite ann I rith an deireadh seachtain. I 1986 bhí coimhlint idir stailceoirí agus gardaí agus mar sin de tháinig an airm isteach chun é a stopadh I mBaile Átha Cliath. I 1998 bhí plean ann leis an chostas de 2 milliún punt chun athchóiriú a dhéanamh ar Tipperary Crystal agus d'oscail sé ar an lá seo agus bhí ionad cuairteoirí nua ann I gCarraig na Siúire. Bhí ionad siopadóireachta níos fearr ann agus níos mó áiseanna chun ithe. Bhí an taobh amuigh déanta suas chomh maith. I 2006 tháinig sé amach go raibh An Cherry Tree I mBéal An Átha an tríú bialann is fearr sa tír sa Jacob's Creek Reserve Restaurant Awards agus bhí sé an bhialann is fearr I gCúige Mumhan. Bhí nach mór 100 bialann ainmnithe timpeall an tír agus shroich An Cherry Tree uimhir a trí. Sin Doctor & The Medics le Spirit In The Sky – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1986 Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1974 tháinig Dolly Parton agus RCA Records amach le hamhrán darbh ainm I Will Always Love You – bhí sé a dara hamhrán ón albam Jolene. Rinne sí taifead ar an amhrán bliain roimhe agus scríobh sí an t-amhrán do Porter Wagoner. I 1987 shroich Whitney Houston uimhir a haon lena amhrán I Wanna Dance With Somebody – a dara hamhrán a shroich uimhir a haon sa Bhreatain. Shroich sí uimhir a haon I dtír eile agus bhuaigh sí Grammy don amhrán I 1988. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh aisteoir Paul Giamatti I Meiriceá I 1967 agus rugadh aisteoir Jason Isaacs sa Bhreatain ar an lá seo I 1963 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh an tseachtain seo chugainn le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 6th of June, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1975: the coalition opackage to cut unemployment and inflation was due to be ready by thr weekend following agonising deliberations. 1986: a violent confrontation between corporation strikers and gardai ended in an army squad being forced to abandon a clean up operation in central dublin. 2006 -The Cherry Tree in Ballina was voted the third best restaurant in Ireland in the Jacob's Creek Reserve Restaurant Awards – and the best in Munster. Up to one hundred establishments throughout the country were nominated for the award and the Cherry Tree made it to the top three. 1998 -A £2m restructuring plan at Tipperary Crystal was on show as it officially opened it's new look Visitor Centre at Carrick-on-Suir, The enlarged centre provides for a more comfortable shopping environment which also includes extended restaurant facilities. The exterior of the building has also benefitted from the development work which has been in progress for some months. That was Doctor and The Medics with Spirit In The Sky – the biggest song on this day in 1986 Onto music news on this day In 1974 RCA Records released 'I Will Always Love You' by Dolly Parton, the second single from Parton's thirteenth solo studio album, Jolene. Recorded on June 13, 1973, the singer wrote the song for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was professionally splitting at the time. 1987 Whitney Houston had her second UK No.1 single with 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)'. It reached No.1 in over a dozen other countries and won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1988. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – actor Paul Giamatti was born in America in 1967 and actor Jason Isaacs was born in the UK on this day in 1963 and this is some of the stuff he has done. We take to the road for this week's Young Stock Podcast as Sarah McIntosh attends the Teagasc/FBD student of the year award ceremony. The awards, sponsored by FBD, were presented to the top graduates of Teagasc Level 6 agriculture, horticulture, equine and forestry training programmes in 2024. With 4,000 students across the Teagasc college campuses, it was a great opportunity to meet the top of the crop students, who took home prizes on the day. Each finalist was nominated by their teacher and Teagasc college faculty and selected from a judging panel. We reportedly have a problem persuading young people to go into trades or starting apprenticeships. So it's welcome when a modern company agrees to take on hundreds of new apprentices every year.Suir Engineering needless to say based in Waterford is doing exactly that. Suir specialises in electrical and mechanical high voltage solutions by building substations for the likes of Eirgrid and the ESB. This week Suir has acquired its Scottish rival Taylor & Fraser. So, that's pretty much it for the season for brown trout, sea trout and salmon fly anglers. Currane, Sheelin and a few other lakes are still open until October 12th but for the vast majority of you the rods are being put away for the winter. Over the coming weeks we'll be reviewing how the season went on the rivers and loughs around Ireland for salmon and brown trout so stay tuned for those episodes… But this week we catch up with a salmon angler who moved over from England just three years ago and discovered salmon fishing that he is in thrall to. You might have seen some of George Kavanagh's incredible images from the Suir on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/george.kavanagh.58) and it was no surprise to learn that George is a commercial photographer who has worked all around the world on shoots. Salmon fishing is his other passion though and the recent move to Ireland opened his eyes to the salmon fishing that was on his doorstep. Sometimes it takes someone to come in from elsewhere to maybe make us appreciate what we actually have here…… Keep up to date with all the latest Ireland on the Fly on https://www.IrelandontheFly.com and get regular updates on https://Instagram.com/IrelandontheFly.

This week we speak to Nicholas Grubb who grew up in south Tipperary beside the Suir and the Tar and he tells us about the incredible catches of fish that were to be had growing up. It's a throwback to another age and his great grandfather Samuel also had a reported 62lber which would have been an Irish record but it was never measured or verified at the time. Nicholas also previously wrote an article for Salmon Watch Ireland discussing some of the reasons why he thinks salmon numbers have plummeted since the 1960s. Imelda Keenan kept a diary, where she wrote down her most personal feelings and aspirations. In 1994, she was 22 years old and living in Waterford City in the Southeast of Ireland. There she lived in a second story bedsit just a stone's throw away from the river Suir. She was a student, she had a boyfriend and a family that loved her. But on January 3rd, she walked out of her home and was never seen again. A home her family have since searched every inch of, for Imelda's diary, hoping to find some clues about her whereabouts. Almost thirty years later, Imelda's disappearance remains a mystery that haunts her family to this day.For more information on every episode from every series visit https://themissingpodcast.orgIf you love the show, and you want to hear more content like The Missing, then you should sign up to Crime Corner.Crime Corner is your home for brilliant true-crime story-telling. If you walk along the river Suir of an evening you'll regularly see anglers staggered along the bed passing their time fishing. For any of us not involved in that world it might be hard t understand the love they have for it, and the peace it brings. As part of Ours to Protect this week – Sheila has been looking at fishing here locally in Tipperary and the joy that nature brings to those involved. She met with the Clonmel and District Anglers where they went along the River Suir to teach her a little bit- She started by talking to secretary Mick Lynch who introduced some of the others:

In this episoed, I chat with Dorje de Burgh about his exhibition 'Under the Same Sky', currently on show at STAC.. Following the artist's move to Carrick-on-Suir in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic due to his high-risk status, Under the Same Sky is a photographic documentation of the town and its surrounds. Representing an outsiders view, this work reflects the particular atmosphere of unease and alienation of that time, as well as being an observation on community, home and belonging. Dorje also strives to subvert familiar representations of the Irish landscape, and in doing so reflect the tensions inherent in both the urban-rural space and the artist's own conflicting positions around closeness and distance.Dorje de Burgh lives and works between Killarney, Dublin & Berlin. Following nomination as a member of the FUTURES European mentorship program, Dorje received the Arts Council of Ireland Next Generation award 2020 and The Darkroom moving image residency 2020/21, producing his second solo exhibition How To Kill Something That Doesn't Exist in association with PhotoIreland Festival 2021.Dorje de Burgh WebsiteFind Dorje on Instagram @dum_studioGet in touch with the podcast: southtippartspodcast@gmail.comLearn more by visiting our website: www.southtippartscentre.ie

A total of 201 free Wi-Fi connectivity access points in public spaces across Ireland have now been installed by Magnet+ as part of the WiFi4EU initiative. The demand for the free Wi-fi connectivity service, which was first introduced in Galway city in October 2020, has grown exponentially over the last two years, with a 30% increase in users nationwide in the last year alone and a total of 8,369 users recorded for the month October 2022. The WiFi4U scheme offers free high-speed access to Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens in public spaces such as parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, museums and in towns and cities throughout Europe. It is an initiative of The European Commission funded by both The European Commission and Department of Rural and Community Development. The areas with the Wi-Fi access points include: Dublin 47 Access Points installed across 17 different towns including Fingal, Blanchardstown, Mulhuddart, Lucan, Castleknock, Portmarnock, Howth, Malahide, Portrane, Donabate, Swords, Balbriggan, Naul, Garristown, Rush, Lusk and Skerries. There were 6,146 users in Fingal alone across September and October this year which is an increase of 15% compared to this time last year. Tipperary County 52 Access Points installed across 6 different towns including Clonmel, Carrick on Suir, Nenagh, Tipperary Town, Roscrea & Thurles. To date 28 of Ireland's 31 local authorities have now secured WiFi4EU vouchers, with 23 securing the maximum of four available and 12 still to go to tender. The Department of Rural and Community Development is providing matched funding of €15,000 for every voucher awarded to Ireland by the EU, effectively doubling the value of the investment. Commenting on this landmark milestone, Philip Clapperton, Sales Director at Magnet +, says: “Magnet+ is delighted to have brought connectivity services to so many towns across Ireland. The multi-location WiFi4EU service will provide previously unavailable Wi-Fi service in these community locations, which will enhance the user experience when visiting these locations. Areas previously affected by a lack of Wi-Fi services can now access reliable, fast and secure internet services at no cost providing incredible ease of access for these areas and boosting all the local economies in these areas. We're excited to grow these networks further to even more areas in the country.”
