We take to the road for this week's Young Stock Podcast as Sarah McIntosh attends the Teagasc/FBD student of the year award ceremony. The awards, sponsored by FBD, were presented to the top graduates of Teagasc Level 6 agriculture, horticulture, equine and forestry training programmes in 2024. With 4,000 students across the Teagasc college campuses, it was a great opportunity to meet the top of the crop students, who took home prizes on the day. Each finalist was nominated by their teacher and Teagasc college faculty and selected from a judging panel. On the day Kate Curran, who is no stranger to the Young Stock Podcast, was awarded the overall title of Teagasc/FBD student of the year for 2024. We get the first interview with Kate as the shock of winning the award sets in and she outlines what it means to her. We also hear from Danny Doyle, who took home the title last year as he fills us in on what he has been up to over the last year while giving advice to this year's winner. Thomas O'Connor from Tralee, Co Kerry, who took home the winning title for the full-time agriculture category speaks to us about his educational pathway and why he decided to attend a Teagasc course. Tipperary native Niamh Duggan, Carrick-on-Suir, took home the award for the full-time other land-based enterprises category. She speaks about progressing onto the Level 8 degree in South East Technological University and what her plans are for the summer months. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

So it's welcome when a modern company agrees to take on hundreds of new apprentices every year.Suir Engineering needless to say based in Waterford is doing exactly that. Suir specialises in electrical and mechanical high voltage solutions by building substations for the likes of Eirgrid and the ESB. This week Suir has acquired its Scottish rival Taylor & Fraser. So, that's pretty much it for the season for brown trout, sea trout and salmon fly anglers. Currane, Sheelin and a few other lakes are still open until October 12th but for the vast majority of you the rods are being put away for the winter. Over the coming weeks we'll be reviewing how the season went on the rivers and loughs around Ireland for salmon and brown trout so stay tuned for those episodes… But this week we catch up with a salmon angler who moved over from England just three years ago and discovered salmon fishing that he is in thrall to. You might have seen some of George Kavanagh's incredible images from the Suir on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/george.kavanagh.58) and it was no surprise to learn that George is a commercial photographer who has worked all around the world on shoots. Salmon fishing is his other passion though and the recent move to Ireland opened his eyes to the salmon fishing that was on his doorstep. Sometimes it takes someone to come in from elsewhere to maybe make us appreciate what we actually have here…… Keep up to date with all the latest Ireland on the Fly on https://www.IrelandontheFly.com and get regular updates on https://Instagram.com/IrelandontheFly.

Imelda Keenan kept a diary, where she wrote down her most personal feelings and aspirations. In 1994, she was 22 years old and living in Waterford City in the Southeast of Ireland. There she lived in a second story bedsit just a stone's throw away from the river Suir. She was a student, she had a boyfriend and a family that loved her. But on January 3rd, she walked out of her home and was never seen again. A home her family have since searched every inch of, for Imelda's diary, hoping to find some clues about her whereabouts. Almost thirty years later, Imelda's disappearance remains a mystery that haunts her family to this day.For more information on every episode from every series visit https://themissingpodcast.orgIf you love the show, and you want to hear more content like The Missing, then you should sign up to Crime Corner.Crime Corner is your home for brilliant true-crime story-telling. If you walk along the river Suir of an evening you'll regularly see anglers staggered along the bed passing their time fishing. In this episoed, I chat with Dorje de Burgh about his exhibition 'Under the Same Sky', currently on show at STAC.. Following the artist's move to Carrick-on-Suir in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic due to his high-risk status, Under the Same Sky is a photographic documentation of the town and its surrounds. Representing an outsiders view, this work reflects the particular atmosphere of unease and alienation of that time, as well as being an observation on community, home and belonging. Dorje also strives to subvert familiar representations of the Irish landscape, and in doing so reflect the tensions inherent in both the urban-rural space and the artist's own conflicting positions around closeness and distance.Dorje de Burgh lives and works between Killarney, Dublin & Berlin. Following nomination as a member of the FUTURES European mentorship program, Dorje received the Arts Council of Ireland Next Generation award 2020 and The Darkroom moving image residency 2020/21, producing his second solo exhibition How To Kill Something That Doesn't Exist in association with PhotoIreland Festival 2021.Dorje de Burgh WebsiteFind Dorje on Instagram @dum_studioGet in touch with the podcast: southtippartspodcast@gmail.comLearn more by visiting our website: www.southtippartscentre.ie

A total of 201 free Wi-Fi connectivity access points in public spaces across Ireland have now been installed by Magnet+ as part of the WiFi4EU initiative. The demand for the free Wi-fi connectivity service, which was first introduced in Galway city in October 2020, has grown exponentially over the last two years, with a 30% increase in users nationwide in the last year alone and a total of 8,369 users recorded for the month October 2022. The WiFi4U scheme offers free high-speed access to Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens in public spaces such as parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, museums and in towns and cities throughout Europe. It is an initiative of The European Commission funded by both The European Commission and Department of Rural and Community Development. The areas with the Wi-Fi access points include: Dublin 47 Access Points installed across 17 different towns including Fingal, Blanchardstown, Mulhuddart, Lucan, Castleknock, Portmarnock, Howth, Malahide, Portrane, Donabate, Swords, Balbriggan, Naul, Garristown, Rush, Lusk and Skerries. There were 6,146 users in Fingal alone across September and October this year which is an increase of 15% compared to this time last year. To date 28 of Ireland's 31 local authorities have now secured WiFi4EU vouchers, with 23 securing the maximum of four available and 12 still to go to tender. The Department of Rural and Community Development is providing matched funding of €15,000 for every voucher awarded to Ireland by the EU, effectively doubling the value of the investment. Commenting on this landmark milestone, Philip Clapperton, Sales Director at Magnet +, says: “Magnet+ is delighted to have brought connectivity services to so many towns across Ireland. The multi-location WiFi4EU service will provide previously unavailable Wi-Fi service in these community locations, which will enhance the user experience when visiting these locations. He pointed out that appropriate student accommodation in Limerick is scarcer this year than ever before. Thug sé le fios go bhfuil cóiríocht chuí do mhic léinn i Luimneach níos gainne i mbliana ná riamh. There are two reasons for this, he thinks. Tá dhá chúis leis seo, dar leis. Because students had been studying from home for a year and a half, he said, landlords had to rent long-term residences to others. Mar gheall go raibh mic léinn ag staidéar ón mbaile le bliain go leith, a dúirt sé, b'éigean do thiarnaí talún árais chónaithe a ligean ar cíos fadtréimhseach do dhaoine eile. Also, John Randles said, people are not providing students with rooms in their homes as they used to because of concerns about the spread of Covid-19. Chomh maith leis sin, a dúirt John Randles, níl daoine ag cur seomraí ina dtithe féin ar fáil do scoláirí mar a bhíodh de bharr imní faoi leathadh covid 19. Róisín Burke from the Students' Union in Mary Immaculate College said that while people are grateful for the accommodation provided by the hotels, more specialist accommodation needs to be built for third level students. Dúirt Róisín Burke ó Aontas na Mac Léinn i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál cé go bhfuil daoine buíoch as an lóistín atá na hóstáin a chur ar fáil dóibh go gcaithfear tuilleadh saináras cónaithe a thógáil le haghaidh scoláirí tríú leibhéal.
