Yumna Patel speaks with Kei Pritsker, journalist at BreakThrough News and co-director of The Encampments — a powerful new documentary chronicling the peaceful student-led movement for Palestine in response to Israel's genocide in Gaza. Co-directed with Michael Workman and produced by BreakThrough News and Watermelon Pictures, the film offers an embedded look at the nonviolent protest that began at Columbia University and spread to more than 100 campuses across the U.S. In April 2024, Columbia students set up an encampment demanding the university divest from companies complicit in Israel's assault on Gaza. Within days, riot police stormed the campus, arresting over 100 students — sparking a nationwide wave of encampments and escalating repression under then President Biden. The backlash was swift. Universities cracked down, police raided campuses, and media figures smeared students as radicals to deflect attention from the atrocities they were protesting against. The film follows organizers like Mahmoud Khalil, whose arrest by ICE under President Trump's “Catch and Revoke” crackdown prompted the filmmakers to accelerate its release. Through months of on-the-ground footage, The Encampments captures not only the political urgency of what many are calling the student intifada, but a broader generational call to resist empire, genocide, and complicity. Students connected Palestine to climate justice, Indigenous sovereignty, and global anti-colonial movements — declaring, simply: Palestine is everywhere. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, July 20, 2024. Officials break ground on the new aerial tram at Hawks Nest State Park…WVU State archeological students uncover ancient artifacts in Malden…and get ready for cheer for some athletes with West Virginia ties at the 2024 Olympics in Paris…on today's daily304. #1 – From SOURCE – State officials recently celebrated the groundbreaking for the new Hawk's Nest State Park aerial tram. The $8 million project is part of the $250 million going into our state parks. The tram originally opened in the '70s and brought many tourists and locals alike until it had to close down two years ago due to maintenance issues. Governor Jim Justice saw a need for new trams at Hawk's Nest and Pipestem Resort State Park and gave the go ahead. The tram transports visitors from Hawks Nest Lodge to the banks of the New River and Hawks Nest Lake. New River Jet Boat Tours picks up passengers at the base of the tram and the Hawks Nest Rail Trail can be accessed from that area. The new tram system reflects the nostalgia that people love but also brings more to the table. The trams are fully ADA accessible and have equipment cabins so people can take their kayaks and bikes down. Students and staff from West Virginia State University's Archeological Field School as well as university students from neighboring states recently finished up another four-week long archeological dig at the historic Hale House in Malden. After last year's dig the team conducted at the site produced a number of 19th century artifacts from the salt industry as well as prehistoric ones. WVSU Associate Professor of History and Field School Director Dr. Michael Workman said the most impressive finds are the archaic pieces they found, which date back even further than 1,000 B.C. One of those extremely old pieces they found was an archaic period drill that Workman said was most likely used by Native Americans who had once roamed the land in the area. Be on the lookout for these athletes: Mary Tucker, Team USA Rifle, is a West Virginia University graduate. Ivan Puskovitch, Team USA Open Water, is a member of the WVU men's swimming team. Fairmont State University alum Perry Baker returns to his third Olympics with Team USA Rugby. Competing for Canada's track team, Ceili McCabe is a student at WVU. On Australia's track team, Amy Cashin is a WVU alum. And former WVU teammates Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence make their third consecutive Olympics representing Team Canada. Triangle of Sadness got lots of buzz and for good reason. While there have been a lot of anti-capitalist themes in movies lately, this one may be the best of the bunch. More complex characters, an ending that makes you think (spoilers in episode, as always) and much more. Here we stand, at the beginning of the most exciting part of our Art Year: opening night. So, what do we do? We return to past form, act like idiots, and debate the state of the Chicago Art World and Art Chicago with Michael Workman. Also, a sober and sick Duncan MacKenzie can't handle a rowdy and drunken Bad at Sports crew and totally melts down, then screams repeatedly at Richard Holland? Could the band be breaking up? Speculation ensues. Let your hate mail begin.
As we recover from Sharkstock 2007 we diligently post Episode #87 the first installment of our team coverage of Artropolis, Version, Bridge, Sharkstock and a bunch of other cool stuff we went to in the last few days. Also prior to our soiree at Sonotheque we it Tony Fitzpatrick's kickass opening at Architrove which was so crowded I nearly had a panic attack, I got to meet his Mom, who was utterly delightful. Paul Klein spent most of the fair weekend worried that we were stalking him as we were oddly on the exact same schedule at all times. This weeks installment consists of a mix of stuff, next week we focus on interviews with gallerists and artists. To top it all off special guest star Dolly Browder joins in!!! The intro has a name mysteriously bleeped out. Cast your vote on our blog on who you think it was. Team Browder reviews New InSight the exhibition of fancy-pants fresh young MFA's curated by Susanne Ghez who, despite being a perfectly lovely person, steadfastly refuses to be on the show. C'mon Susanne we don't bite! Our first team coverage event: Team Queer (Terri, Serena, and Meg the war correspondent) and Team Fat White Guy (Duncan, Richard, Christopher Hudgens) get in the midst of combat with the "Carnival of art on the river" AKA "Art War 2007". A member of the team is wounded in the line of duty. We intend to sue. Everyone. Edmar you are on notice. Terri and Meg talk about Symposium C6 The Art World is Flat and how weirdly classist it seemed to be. Duncan and Richard talk to William Dolan and Mark Staff-Brandl about The Artist Project and Bill makes a sale during our bit with him. Richard talks to Michael Workman about being guillotined in effigy. Tom Burtonwood mourns the loss of his good friend Michael, but has already planned his ascendancy to the leadership of Bridge. We wrap it all up with a discussion of Canadians drinking too much. And this is just week 1. You should be paying us.
Bad at Sports begins the Art Fair Update by chatting it up with the organizers of the Version Festival '06 in Bridgeport (Edmar, Elise, Matt, Rotten Milk, and Burke). Later, we discuss with Michael Workman the highlights of the upcoming Nova Art Fair. Richard and Duncan end the show with a review of "Covers," the Oli Watt show at Booster and Seven. I'm sick, this will be a less glitzy and amusing e-mail than usual. Hence this notice coming out so late. THIS WEEK: We set the record straight about our rumored conflict with Gallery 400, although we definitely didn't like the show they have up right now. We check out the utterly fabulous collection of shows at the Cultural Center. AND to make it total art overload, we go to the MCA and take in an array of shows there too. Also our London branch (Ben Tanner and Christian Kuras) checks in and we get a brief NOVA plug from Michael Workman. Another great show, tell your pals that we kick ass. Duncan cries inside because there are still people in town who haven't been reached by our pithy commentary. WHY OH WHY doesn't Tony Wight at Bodybuilder & Sportsman respond to our e-mail? Everybody else in 119 responds; where is the love??? We are just trying to give you some airtime--we won't be mean, honest. Wendy Cooper writes back, c'mon buddy. THIS WEEK: We visit Barbara Koenen at her lovely home and discuss resources available for artists in the City of Chicago. Barbara is in charge of the utterly bad-assed Chicago Artists Resource website, which shines the light of knowledge into the dark pit of confusion for us local types. If you don't already participate, sign up now! Chicago Artists Resource website, GO NOW!!! ALSO: Duncan and Richard shut the hell up (leave the room even) so that Amanda and Shannon can review the new show at 40000 "Versus" Names dropped:Brian Andrews, Cody Cloud, Rose DiSalvo, Dennis Hodges, Josh Mannis, Video Machete, Dan Peterman (also can't write back to us), Rich Mansfield, Duncan MacKenzie, Heather Mekkelson, Jenny Walters, Sze Lin Pang, Naomi Robbins, Geoff Smalley, Mayor Richard J. NEXT WEEK: Liz Armstrong from the Reader? James Rondeau? Michael Workman dishing on who pisses him off? We have lots of stuff in the queue, let's see who we manage to schedule time with.
20 shows! Wow! I think back to my initial conversations with Duncan in a bar downtown and I doubt we ever expected to get an audience as large as we now have (which has doubled in the last month), the number of great, brilliant people working with us around the world, and the wonderful feedback we have been getting, thanks to you all! We continue to look at Bad at Sports as an open resource, so let us know what you think. If you want to contribute (particularly if you are somewhere other than Chicago), let us know! We are here as a public resource. Thanks! Also, curious minds are still waiting to hear a good explanation of why, without permission from the artist, UIC took the Death by Design piece down off of the Temporary Allegiance flag pole at Gallery 400. Someone please enlighten us. Check out the cool pictures of us Duncan posted: http://www.badatsports.com/pages/about.htm Lane Relyea purportedly thinks we are cool. THIS WEEK: We interview Mark Booth--artist, teacher, and curator of the forthcoming “an incomplete map of everything? festival at Links Hall. Per the Links Hall press release: “an incomplete map of everything is a fragmentary atlas of an imaginary world. The festival is comprised of co-existing “landforms? of an experimental nature; the Goldsmith archipelago, the Bök atoll, the plateaus of Goulish, the Bervin Sea, the isthmus of Mallozzi, and the fjord of Ross. There are other topographical features as well, both familiar and unfamiliar; emerging glaciers, new volcanoes, and uncharted estuaries. If there is one thing these artists have in common apart from their shared commitment to experimentation and investigative exploration it is their interest in probing the minimal elements that form the materiality of human experience.? Mark also talks about being mistaken for a spaceman. Richard and Amanda apologize to Duncan for creating confusion over the name Middle Management. Duncan and Amanda fight TO THE DEATH over whether or not it is acceptable to curate yourself into a show. And, finally, Richard insists you bow down to the genius of Patti Smith’s first record! Names dropped:Tiny Hairs, Terri Kapsalis, Libby the cat, Christian Bök, Judd Morrissey, Relaxation Record, Jesse Seldess, Luc Tuymans, Leonie Weber, Ben Brown, Meg Nafziger, Jeff Kowalkowski, Michael Workman, NOVA, Lou Mallozzi, Björn Ross, Fessenden, Institute of Failure, Trent Smith, Petrova, Jen Bervin, Lilli Carré, Erin Tikovitch, Tony Rosati, The 6 Ghosts of Fear, Ginger Krebs, Erin Moore, Kenneth Goldsmith, Ken Fandell, Matthew Goulish, Justin Cooper, Christopher Lavery, Daniel Borzutzky, CJ Mitchell, Goat Island, James Rondeau, Jimi Hendrix, Patti Smith, Open End Gallery, and last, but not least, Furries. NEXT WEEK: Barbara Koenen, fabulous overlord of the Chicago Artist Resource site, talks about how artists can make the most of what Chicago has to offer, and so much more.
THIS WEEK: The always controversial and busy Michael Workman--New City art critic, NOVA front man, Bridge Magazine editor in chief, Art Fair impresario, freelance writer and 92 other things-- talks about the art biz, why he pisses people off, why the youth cult is bullshit, and the state of the Chicago art scene. Amanda is hopping mad about the role of teaching in the art community. Duncan, Richard, and Amanda talk about "Maximum Wage" from Illbilly.com! NEXT WEEK: Part 2 of our discussion with Michelle Grabner! Richard asks if art criticism is simply written for eggheads who also write art criticism.
This show has at least 3 shows worth of material. THIS WEEK: Michelle Maynard and Teena McClelland the ladies of Death by Design Co. talk about gore, guts, and their show at Gallery 400! Duncan, Richard and Amanda, rise above the fray and avoid saying snotty things about people related to a certain gallery space, once again, basking the entire time in the soft, warm glow of our moral superiority. Cassie Thornton checks in from NYC! We review Daniel Blanco's show at Flatfile. AND the year end wrap up. Duncan apologizes to the OODA group for being a jerk. Duncan, Richard and Amanda talk about Maximum Wage! We might even have a piece by a second NYC contributor despite the fact they are too damn rude to spend 1 second and figure out what my name is before they write to us.
