THE TRIANGLE OF SADNESS beeindruckt hatte. Am Mikrofon mit ganz unterschiedlichen Meinungen: Johanna, Heidi, Tom und Thomas.
Since Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. president, ways to stop the carnage in Ukraine this year have been the subject of intense policy discussions in capitals around the world. Despite Trump's rhetoric about ending the war swiftly and forcing Putin into a deal, there is still no clear vision of how a cessation of hostilities could be reached. Does the new team in the White House have what it takes to secure a deal that guarantees Ukraine's sovereignty, and what is the way forward?

It's time to turn our attention to a real rising star… Harris Dickinson. In our third episode of our miniseries predicting future Oscar nominees, Harris felt apt to discuss given his eclectic film work and hotly anticipated upcoming projects… Still being a relatively new face in cinema does not prevent him giving us plenty to chat about…. Throughout the episode we focus on Beach Rats (Eliza Hittman, 2017), Postcards From London (Steve McLean, 2018), Triangle Of Sadness (Ruben Östlund, 2022), Where The Crawdads Sing (Olivia Newman, 2022), Scrapper (Charlotte Regan, 2023) and The Iron Claw (Sean Durkin, 2023). We're sure that his career will continue to flourish and we'll have much more to talk about down the line, hopefully with Oscar nominations in tow. Follow us on social media to stay updated! How can games elevate dramatic scenes? In part two of this two parter, Stu and Chas go further into the game (of the scene) and look at how games force characters *other* than the protagonist to interact. We deep dive into the wonderful social satires of TRIANGLE OF SADNESS and THE FAVOURITE. We discuss how games reveal character through competency and decisions, how resources and skills impact the tactics that characters employ, and the difference between referees, rule lawyers, rule makers and rule breakers. Do you feel like you need to protect your creative process? Like the moment you "share" a part of your work, does the work lose some of its relevance or meaning? On today's episode of the podcast, I talk about the intimate process of creativity and how social media and "sharing" often tears down the unique qualities of art. I've been in the midst of working on my fifth record and while I'm eager to "share" my process, more often than not, I often feel like my art loses meaning once it's been put out on social. I know so many people rely on social for relevance, but for me, it often has the opposite effect. So instead, I've been surrounding myself with movies, music and podcasts that make me feel MORE connected to the uniqueness of my own creative process. I just re-watched Pulp Fiction and saw the incredible new movie Triangle of Sadness. I listened to a brilliant interview with the Edge on Rick Rubin's podcast and I've been reading Rick Rubin's inspiring new book. If we're not careful, the significance of our own work can become diluted if we're not keenly aware of how certain "content" can effect our own process. As always, thanks so much for listening to the show and being so supportive. I appreciate YOU! The 95th Academy Awards is upon us! It's been another great year in film. “Top Gun: Maverick,” one of the Best Picture nominees, has been credited as the blockbuster that brought audiences back to theaters post pandemic. This year also saw the long awaited sequel to James Cameron's technical achievement “Avatar” with “Avatar: The Way Of Water.” But possibly the biggest film of the year was small indie movie “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which has maintained a dedicated fanbase of everyday movie-goers and critics alike since its premiere in March 2022, and has dominated the award circuit leading up to this year's Oscar ceremony as the projected winner for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress among other categories. Other Best Picture nominees in addition to those three films: “The Banshees Of Inisherin,” “Women Talking,” “Triangle Of Sadness,” “The Fabelmans,” “All Quiet On The Western Front,” “Tár,” and “Elvis.” Other categories covered include Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Supporting Actress, and more! There's so much to talk about! Larry Mantle and LAist film critics are live at the Orpheum Theater in DownTown Los Angeles to discuss the 95th Academy Award nominations from Best Screenplay to Best Picture. Rivka and Frank are joined by Carla Marie Davis, co-host of the Sip & Politic podcast, to discuss Ruben Östlund's brutal 2022 satire, Triangle of Sadness, and how the film is one of the most effective modern commentaries about class politics, even though its ideas regarding gender dynamics aren't as fully fleshed out. They also dig into how the film confronts the concepts of capitalism and communism head-on, but seems more interested in the influence of power.

Park Chan-wook's new DECISION TO LEAVE openly takes inspiration from David Lean's 1945 classic BRIEF ENCOUNTER (along with VERTIGO, which we also considered for this pairing), but the extramarital affair at the center of Park's film is much more complicated than that of its inspiration — a murder mystery will do that, after all. We do our best to unpack the pileup of telling details informing Park's slow-burn romance, before bringing Lean's film back into the discussion to explore how these two stories connect in their respective studies of forbidden love and judgmental societies, the romanticism of stolen moments, and the metaphorical power of fog. Plus, we nod to an episode that almost was in Your Next Picture Show, sharing our brief reactions to Ruben Östlund's TRIANGLE OF SADNESS and some of the films we considered pairing it with. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about BRIEF ENCOUNTER, DECISION TO LEAVE, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, leaving a short voicemail at 773-234-9730, or commenting on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes and more. There's a fine line between what makes a comedy movie “funny” and what makes a comedy movie “cringeworthy”. In this episode, Mike compares two films and why one was done right and what went wrong with the other. It's a comprehensive list of what comedic movies will make you laugh and which to avoid all together. In the movie review, Mike shares his thoughts on Breaking starring John Boyega. Based on a true story it's the story of Marine veteran Brian Brown-Easley that held several people hostage inside a bank because he is so frustrated with Veterans Affairs. In the trailer park, Mike shares a dark comedy starring Woody Harrelson called Triangle of Sadness. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
