Brian Kesselman is cofounder and now CRO of Skematic, a compliance management and workflow software for financial services firms. Brian was a lawyer for major financial services companies who helped manage internal compliance in this highly regulated industry. He took a job selling compliance software and broke sales records before starting Skematic with a coworker and launching in September 2022. Skematic grew quickly by solving an acute problem for lawyers and compliance execs just like him in his industry. The company became profitable quickly as Brian focused on outbound selling with cold calls and savvy demos to busy compliance executives. They grew fast, were profitable in just over a year, and attracted attention from potential acquirers.  In June 2024, FRT, a larger legal software company, acquired Skematic for an undisclosed amount, including some cash and incentives. Brian and his cofounder still run Skematic and enjoy being part of a bigger software company owned by a private family office that is highly aligned with their culture and values. And we had our own opinions about what it's like to work at a PE-backed company." "The family office structure is very different from a private equity firm across the board. As Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael engage in talks to form the next Irish government, the controversial issue of facial recognition technology (FRT) in policing is back in the spotlight. With plans to introduce FRT into Garda operations already on the table, this topic is expected to become a flashpoint in political and public debates in the months ahead. Adding to the conversation, a public Think-In event titled Facing the Future: Let's Talk Facial Recognition Technology was held recently at The Digital Hub as part of Beta Festival. Co-organised by Dr Ciara Bracken-Roche and Dr Emma Clarke of the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, the event provided a platform for experts and citizens to critically assess the potential impact of FRT on Irish society. The session featured contributions from Daniel Kahn Gillmor, Senior Staff Technologist at the ACLU, and Olga Cronin, Senior Policy Officer at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL). Both highlighted major concerns, including the risk of bias in FRT systems, threats to personal privacy, and the broader implications for civil liberties. Participants were invited to discuss real-world scenarios, such as using FRT to identify a vandal after a car was damaged or tracking a hit-and-run driver. These discussions revealed a complex web of ethical and practical questions about how this technology might be used responsibly, or abused, in law enforcement. The Think-In also included Calculating Empires, an immersive research visualisation by Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler. The artwork examines how technological systems and societal structures have evolved over centuries, offering a powerful lens through which to view the modern surveillance landscape. This debate takes place against the backdrop of significant political change. As the new government takes shape, its stance on FRT will likely signal Ireland's broader approach to balancing technological innovation with the protection of civil rights. The issue became especially pressing last year, when the government proposed using FRT for serious crimes, including riots and violent disorder, following public disturbances in Dublin. Supporters argue that FRT could improve Garda efficiency by speeding up video analysis in investigations, while opponents, including the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, warn of the potential for mass surveillance and errors that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. Calls for robust safeguards and comprehensive legislative scrutiny have been growing louder. With public trust, privacy, and security at stake, the debate over facial recognition technology is certain to remain a high-profile issue as the next government sets its priorities. ADAPT researchers are at the forefront of addressing these challenges. Dr. Abeba Birhane and Dr. Ciara Bracken-Roche have made expert testimonies for the Oireachtas' Joint Committee on Justice's Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) (Amendment) Bill 2023, and co-authored prominent opinion pieces warning about granting Gardaí extensive FRT capabilities risks creating "roaming surveillance units" and foreshadows "big problems" if such technology is adopted without rigorous safeguards. Car number plates, often called license plates or registration plates, might seem like simple metal or plastic rectangles at first glance. Yet, these unassuming tags are vital to the automotive world, playing crucial roles in identifying vehicles and ensuring road safety by confirming the necessary documentation. But have you ever paused to consider the intriguing history behind these "ordinary" plates? Join me on a journey through time to uncover the story of car number plates - how they began as a practical necessity and evolved into a canvas for personal expression. Along the way, we'll also dive into the mind-boggling distraction of trying to decode personalized license plates, those clever combinations of letters and numbers that often leave us scratching our heads in wonder and amusement. From their humble beginnings to their current role as symbols of identity, license plates reflect the rich tapestry of our societal and technological advancements. Let's drive in! The Early Days: The Need for Identification The concept of identifying vehicles using number plates emerged in the late 19th century. As automobiles became more common, authorities needed a way to control traffic and ensure compliance with regulations. In 1893, France introduced license plates to recognize motor vehicle owners. These early plates were made from iron, porcelain, or leather and were manually painted with registration numbers. In the United States, New York State implemented license plate regulations in 1901, followed by Massachusetts in 1903, which also issued the first state-produced plates. Initially, vehicle owners created their own plates, focusing on practicality rather than aesthetics. The Rise of the License Plate: A Global Phenomenon Another major development was the widespread use of standardized license plates, which began in the early 20th century. Various countries and regions started to introduce uniform systems for registering and identifying vehicles. This swift transition to using license plates occurred worldwide, with every country creating its own distinctive numbering methods and formats. The 20th-century mass production techniques changed the way license plates were made. They shifted from being items made by the owner to becoming standardized, state-issued identifiers created using tough materials such as steel and aluminum. This alteration ensured that all plates had the same shape and design, leading to an organized and manageable car-license plate identification system. Ontario's Alphanumeric System In Ontario, Canada, the license plate number generation follows a systematic approach that might seem random at first glance but is actually quite structured. The province uses an alphanumeric system that has evolved over time to accommodate its growing vehicle population. Currently, Ontario's standard plates for passenger vehicles use a combination of four letters followed by three numbers (AAAA 000). This system, introduced in 1997, replaced the previous format of three letters and three numbers. The letters are generated sequentially, excluding vowels to avoid creating unintentional words, and certain combinations like "FRT" (front) or "BAK" (back) are also omitted. The numeric portion simply runs from 000 to 999 for each letter combination. When a series is exhausted, the system moves to the next alphabetical combination. This methodical approach allows for millions of unique combinations, ensuring each vehicle in Ontario has a distinct identifier. Interestingly, Ontario also issues special series for specific purposes, such as "GV" for government vehicles or "PRP" for police. This systematic generation not only serves the practical purpose of vehicle identification but also reflects the province's orderly approach to traffic management and vehicle registration. The Creative Twist: Personalized License Plates When license plates became very common, some car owners started looking for ways to make their vehicles unique....

Facial recognition technology, or FRT, is becoming increasingly common as businesses, governments, and law enforcement authorities look for ways to use your face to verify your identity, track your movements, and control your access to government benefits. A company called Clearview AI, for example, has scraped over 30 billion photos of people from the Internet to create a tool that lets police automatically identify people in crowds or walking down the street. That's why lobby groups such as the Electronic Frontiers Foundation have been pushing back hard against FRT, which it says is too inaccurate to be used for identifying people and is prone to racial bias, threatens privacy rights, and creates information security risks. The group argues that the government should ban the use of FRT in agencies and strictly limit its use in the private sector. Whether this slows its adoption or not remains to be seen – but in a world where your face is your identity, it's important to remain vigilant to FRT's use.
