Steve Kopesky and Ted Rubinstein on Jimmy Hoffa - part 2YesterdaySteve Kopesky and Ted Rubinstein return with more on the fascinating life of Jimmy Hoffa.Jimmy Hoffa (born February 14, 1913, Brazil, Indiana, U.S.—disappeared July 30, 1975, Bloomfield Hills, near Detroit, Michigan) was an American labour leader who served as president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1957 to 1971 and was one of the most controversial labour organizers of his time. The son of an Indiana coal miner who died when Hoffa was seven, Hoffa moved with his family to Detroit in 1924. He left school at age 14, worked as a stock boy and warehouseman for several years, and began his union-organizing activities in the 1930s. Initially the business agent for Local 299 in Detroit, Hoffa by 1940 had become chairman of the Central States Drivers Council and by 1942 president of the Michigan Conference of Teamsters. In 1952 he was elected an international vice president of the Teamsters, and five years later he succeeded Dave Beck as international president.Known throughout the trucking industry as a tough and knowledgeable bargainer, Hoffa successfully centralized administration and bargaining in the international office of the union. He also played a key role in the creation of the first national freight-hauling agreement. His efforts helped make the Teamsters the largest labour union in the United States.Known to have long associated with organized crime figures, Hoffa nevertheless survived a series of governmental prosecutions until 1967, when he entered the federal prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to begin a 13-year sentence for jury tampering, fraud, and conspiracy. Hoffa refused to resign as president of the Teamsters while in prison and kept his position until 1971. U.S. Pres. Richard M. Nixon commuted Hoffa's sentence in December 1971, stipulating that he could not engage in any union activity until 1980. Hoffa, however, fought the restriction in court and was widely believed to have covertly continued his efforts to reestablish a union position. On July 30, 1975, he disappeared from a restaurant in suburban Detroit under circumstances that have never been fully determined. He was said to have had an appointment at the restaurant with Anthony Provenzano, a New Jersey Teamsters official and former Mafia figure, and Anthony Giacalone, a Detroit mobster; both later denied having encountered Hoffa, who was never seen again. He was legally declared “presumed dead” in 1982.Tags#hoffa#kennedy#mccarthyhearings#teamsters#truecrine#vanishedBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Michigan Conference minister, Rev. Lillian Daniel, author, homilist, and humorist offered this lovely interpretation of scripture and a hilarious-loving homily to illustrate the Body of Christ, with a Mother's Day message running in the current.
It's Wednesday, December 6th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims kidnapped 100 people Muslim gunmen abducted over 100 people from northwest Nigeria over the weekend. A local church leader said the militants targeted Christians, including 72 members of his church. The gunmen are demanding a ransom worth over $130,000. Christian rights activists accuse the local government of doing nothing about such attacks. Please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ in Nigeria, ranked first on International Christian Concern's Persecutors of 2023 list of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. British young people growing hostile to Christianity Young people in the United Kingdom are growing hostile to the historic Christian faith of their nation. A poll from Whitestone Insights found 23% of adults aged 18 to 34 agreed with this statement: “Unless the offending parts can be edited out, books containing what some perceive as hate speech should be banned from general sale, including if necessary religious texts such as the Bible.” The results come as Christians are facing more censorship in the U.K. This includes arrests for street preachers quoting the Bible in public to legal action against pro-lifers for praying outside abortion mills. Christian school suing Vermont over transgender issue In the United States, a Christian school is taking the state of Vermont to court for religious discrimination. The state banned Mid Vermont Christian School from all sports events as well as Vermont's tuition program for holding Biblical doctrines on sexuality. The school forfeited a girls basketball game against a team with a biological male pretending to be a girl. Alliance Defending Freedom is representing the school in its case. Ryan Tucker with ADF said, “Vermont has repeatedly discriminated against Christian schools and their families for following their religious beliefs. Put simply, Mid Vermont Christian School believes that boys are boys and girls are girls. They have been punished for this belief.” In Matthew 19:4, Jesus said, “He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female.'” 137 abortion mills shut down in 2022 and 2023 Operation Rescue reports 88 abortion mills shut down last year. With 49 more closures this year, the total reached 137 closures over the past two years. Currently, abortions mills are closed or have halted abortions in 14 states. Adjusting for the opening of new abortion mills, the U.S. saw a net decrease of 13 abortion locations from 683 in 2022 to 670 in 2023. Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said, “This is a huge 69% decrease since 1991 when 2,176 abortion clinics were operating. … However, our findings reveal an alarming rise in dangerous mail-order abortions. … The prayers and work involved in exposing the evil behind the Abortion Cartel is more important than ever!” More congregations leaving United Methodist church over homosexuality More congregations are leaving the United Methodist Church (UMC) over the issue of homosexuality. Last Thursday, the Michigan Conference of the denomination approved the disaffiliation of 62 churches. On Saturday, the Illinois Great Rivers Conference approved the disaffiliation of 51 churches. Also on Saturday, the Florida Conference approved the disaffiliation of 74 churches. Nearly 7,500 congregations have now left the United Methodist Church since 2019 as the denomination has failed to enforce its rules against sexually perverted lifestyles. Gold hit $2,100 Gold prices reached an all-time high of $2,100 per ounce on Sunday. Gold may stay above $2,000 over the next year. Prices have risen over the last couple of months because international conflicts have boosted demand. Plus, on Monday, Bitcoin reached a 20-month high of $42,000. The world's biggest cryptocurrency continues to rebound despite recent crypto-related scandals and exchange collapses. Anniversary of St. Nicholas' death And finally, this day in history is known as St. Nicholas' Day in commemoration of his death in A.D. 343. Nicholas of Myra may be popularly remembered today in the form of Santa Claus. However, the early Christian leader was known for his piety, evangelism, and pastoral care. Nicholas also stood for Christ in the face of Roman persecution and encroaching doctrinal heresies. Many legends have been handed down about him, but his care for children and the poor were well known. The compassion and generosity of Nicholas sparked traditions of feasting and gift giving on this day. The Apostle Paul said in Acts 20:35, “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.' ” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, December 6th in the year of our Lord 2023. Stories, history, current reality, and Scripture come together in this week’s conversation with Charles Boayue Jr. Charles is a District Superintendent in the Michigan Conference of the UMC and takes us on a leadership journey to point to the importance of accountability. You’re invited to explore both the full picture and details that accompany accountability. In the context of pastoring a local church, Charles reminds us of the importance of the calling on the gifts of the whole community to help widen your perspective and provide feedback. Additionally, Charles highlights knowing your purpose (See Episodes 159 -162) as an essential element of mutual accountability. As you seek to understand God’s will, recognize the importance of listening and the wisdom of others. As you’ll hear, that’s where mistakes in accountability can happen. Most of all enjoy the wisdom, grace, and stories Charles shares, inviting you on a journey of accountability that is filled with mercy, direction, and the goodness of God. Step by Step, Grace by Grace sermon from Bishop David Bard: Today in worship we welcome our new Bishop David Bard! Bishop Bard is the resident bishop of the Michigan Conference and will serve as the Minnesota Conference’s interim bishop in 2021. Bishop Bard shares his commitment to working with Minnesota United Methodists toward a more vital and vibrant Methodism in Minnesota; to keeping before us our gospel imperatives of growing in love of God and neighbor, reaching new people, and healing a broken world; and to helping us live into the aspirational vision we adopted in 2019. He also reminds us that the journey will be step-by-step. There will be potholes on the way. Even so, with every step, there is grace. Step by step, grace upon grace.Scripture readings: Jeremiah 31:7-14 and John 1:1-17.
Tom Arthur was appointed as the second pastor of a church plant in the Michigan Conference. On this episode of the Field Preachers podcast, he and host Rachel Gilmore engage in a dual interview to explore the joys and struggles of leading church plants. In March of 1739, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, engaged in "field preaching" for the first time after being encouraged by his friend and fellow preacher George Whitefield. Instead of preaching his sermon from a pulpit, Wesley went out from the church and preached in the open air to those who didn't have the time or money to sit in a pew and hear the good news. Thousands of people, mainly those struggling with poverty, came to hear him preach that first week and the revival of Methodism was born as the good news became real in the hearts of those who heard about God's love and grace. Church planters are modern day "field preachers" who go out from the established church into the community where they proclaim good news to those who need it most. This podcast is a series of interviews and stories from modern-day Methodist field preachers who will make you laugh, cry, and think more deeply about how and where we are called to share God's love and grace.

The gospel is a unique solution in a sin-filled world to a problem that is as old as time. Ever since Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, humanity has been caught in a struggle between good and evil. Unfortunately, choosing Christ isn’t quite as simple as we would like it to be. Each of us come to Jesus with unhelpful habits that we’ve cultivated and minds that have a bent towards sin. Perhaps you’ve been wondering: what are the nuts and bolts of overcoming temptation? Is it possible? Does God want us to be perfect? In this episode of the GYC Beyond Podcast Esther Louw discusses these questions with Andy Im. Andy is currently the Communications Director at Michigan Conference and is on the board of directors for GYC.
Michigan Area Bishop David Alan Bard is Rev. Dr. Brad Miller's guest on episode 008 of the United Methodist people podcast. the mission of the United Methodist people podcast is strengthening the connection in the United Methodist Church through conversation and commentary as a means of accomplishing our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Dr. Brad's conversation with Bishop Bard is a part of the "the bishops speak" series of podcasts episodes were Dr. Brad will be speaking to a number of United Methodist bishops from around the world prior to the 2019 Gen. conference. Dr. Brad is asking each bishop two questions vital to the future of the United Methodist Church. 1. How effective has the UMC been in fulfilling our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ the transformation of the world? 2. what is your view of the way forward? In episode 008 of the UMPP Dr. Brad indeed ask these two questions to Bishop Bard as a part of the far-ranging conversation which included Bishop Bards story of coming to faith, the influences on his life and ministry, his academic pursuits in the field of ethics, his service to the church in many capacities in Minnesota and his election to the episcopacy in 2016. In response to Dr. Brad's questions about mission effectiveness, Bishop Bard shared about missional activities in the Michigan Conference including efforts to reach out to local schools through local UMC's. In regards to questions regarding about "a way forward," Bishop Bard goes deep with Dr. Brad making the cogent points that how we as a denomination handle the dilemmas before us is as vitally important as the decisions which are ultimately made. He warns against our church falling into an "soup of cynicism" which diminishes our effectiveness and witness to the world. Instead, Bishop Bard advocates carefully considered, well researched, arguments to support viewpoints regarding paths our church can take "on the way forward". Bishop Bard is hopeful that a willingness to engage in challenging conversation is a gift we can give to our culture of modeling how people who have differences can find places to do shared ministry together. He points to Ephesians 4 as a model on how we as a church can treat one another even in the midst of difficult decisions. He says that not only will all the UMC be watching us but the world is watching us as well as we make "a way forward." You can can take inspiration, introspection and a word of hope from Michigan Bishop David Bard in Episode 008 of The United Methodist People Podcast with Rev. Dr. Brad Miller. This week, Esther Louw and Pastor Moise Ratsara have an engaging conversation about how and why young people should be involved in local church endeavors. While not everyone is called to become a missionary overseas, Pastor Ratsara believes every Christian is called to participate in the gospel commission. Pastor Ratsara grew up as a missionary kid in Africa before completing his theology degree at Southern Adventist University in Tennessee. Currently a pastor in Michigan Conference as well as the president of GYC, Moise Ratsara shares with us from personal experience.
