Dyslexicon is the soul-searching and emotionally-driven creative outlet of multi-instrumentalist Dan Hart. It’s metal. It’s punk. It’s prog. It’s cool. Dan joins me just as the second Dyslexicon album, Dracula at Sea, is available for streaming. At one point during the conversation, I call him a “mad scientist” for the way he put together this remarkable album. He has a wonderful creative mind, and I really enjoyed talking with him. Dan Hart left his 34-year career at Boeing to embark on a new adventure as CEO of Virgin Orbit. Working for Richard Branson's startup was the opportunity of a lifetime during the heyday of new space, and the company enjoyed a string of successes before the company filed for bankruptcy in April 2023. The 1969 moon landing had a big impact on Dan in his early years and he simply cold called NASA to see if he could get a job! To his luck, they answered and he found his way to Kennedy Space Centre. The Challenger accident occurred in January 1986 and it impacted all the individuals in the industry and halted the programme for a number of years. Dan himself watched the events unfold with his team and they were all reminded of the dangers of the work they were involved in. It was in 2016 that Dan was asked to take on the CEO role of Virgin Orbit. Dan had been following the recent space race developments and Virgin Orbit working along side Richard Branson was an appealing challenge. Note: Virgin Orbit was set up to launch satellites whereas Virgin Galactic was focused on space tourism. Virgin Orbit was trying to be the first to launch a liquid rocket off the wing of an aeroplane. The X1 and X15 many years ago had been liquid propelled but none had been orbital. A liquid rocket is a complicated machine with multiple variables and unknowns. The legacy of the space industry was the compelling reason Dan said yes to Virgin Orbit with high risk and high reward on the agenda. Why is space so compelling for iconic billionaires such as Branson, Musk and Bezos? Dan considers it to be the potential for limitless learning, legacy and impactful world changing technologies and scientific breakthroughs. Dan remains excited as to the developments in space science such as expeditions to Jupiter and Mars to enhance our ability to understand the universe. Dan explains moving from Boeing to Virgin felt liberating as he took charge of a small, agile start up with a mandate to reinvent from the go. Great technical talent met creativity so anything was now possible. I ask Dan what it was like working shoulder to shoulder with Richard Branson? Dan talks about Richard's, awareness, inquisitive nature and visionary qualities allowing others to flourish and thrive. As CEO Dan needed to be the positive drive for others to push for achieving the never achieved before but also mindful of the lessons of the past, such as Challenger. Dan was involved in projects where they were 'punching above their weight' due to the attractiveness of the space industry. Virgin Orbit was invited to the G7 Summit in 2021 and worked with Prime Minister Boris Johnson for the first launch ever from the UK. There was no 'playbook' for this type of event and adventure. Dan tells the story when he feared his team could be arrested by the police from continuing the project as the explosive charges of the rocket were being considered as manufacturing ordnance. Whilst these things slowed the project down, the team found the resilience to overcome all obstacles. Virgin Orbit launched successfully 4 times in a row which was a huge achievement for a new start up in the sector. They also experienced significant failures along the way as failure was inevitable. Dan remembers after one failure, Richard Branson immediately said to him, 'when's the next ride going to be ready?' A leader's ability to bounce back allowed for the whole team to move on to thinking about tomorrow and not just the failure of today. As the CEO Dan remembers the times when he was there to push and motivate the team and yet he also remembers those times when the team pushed and motivated him. When Virgin Orbit filed for bankruptcy in 2023 Dan reflected on the group of people who achieved so much in the knowledge that they changed space technology for the better. "Everything pulls us forward, even when the lights go out behind you."
Unbelievably, it's our 5th Anniversary (AI-nniversary?) and to mark the milestone of an AI podcast that's had more pivots than a robot's legs, and more chat than a chatbot, we've pulled together some of the top episodes from the 108 episodes of the podcast so far, and got the band back together (regretfully, we were unable to persuade Beth Worral, who co-hosted in 2022-2023, to come back for our party podcast - she'd reached escape velocity), so you'll hear Dan, Ray and Lee reminiscing like old men in a shed. Great Guests & Top Episodes Our very first guest - Microsoft's Troy Waller in AI for Accessibility in 2019 Our most listened episode from 2019 and very first external guest - the brilliant Dr David Kellerman in Using AI to personalise learning at UNSW Sydney Our top 2020 episode was A Brief History of AI, which looked backin to the human obsession with creating artificial replicas of themselves. When did it start, who started it, what is the AI winter and how did it accelerate so quickly in the last 10 years. (And even faster in the last 4 years since?) In 2021, another great guest topped our episode charts, with Feel the force: Emerge to the future with Sly Lee as Sly talked about his work around VR and AR and the mergeing of physical and virtual worlds For 2022, it was the Christmas edition that hit the heights, with all four co-hosts - Beth, Lee, Dan & Ray - together for the quizzically named Christmas, Infinite Monkeys and everything By 2023, we were back on solid pedagogy again, with the episode AI - The fuel that drives insight in K12 with Travis Smith (the kind of title a marketing manager would love?) And, although we've not yet reached the end of 2024 and we've got some great episodes ahead, the top episode this far is University of Sydney and the future of assessment with Danny Liu and Adam Bridgman We also had fond memories of: The AI in Popular Culture episode from 2020 Martin O'Sullivan's tales from Turing House School in From AI Detectors to Heartwarming Help: Two Tales of AI in a school Elle Graham (aka Woodes) in Music, Creativity and Minecraft with Woodes Practical lessons from chatbot land with The Search for the Education Holy Grail in NSW, with the stories shared by Dan Hart and Michelle Michael

Sometimes you find yourself in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica, training jiu jitsu and spending time with close friends. These are some of my favorite trips, and I always enjoy sitting down and picking the brains of experts in their fields. As usual, we covered much more than just jiu jitsu, as these conversations often span life in general, and business. We definitely spent some time unpacking and discussing the recent multi-million dollar injury award to a white belt jiu jitsu student, and the potential impact on jiu jitsu academies worldwide. Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the acadamy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In 1997 the school moved to the Pacific Palisades where Henry trained and assisted main Instructor Luis Heredia and also participated and trained in all of the classes taught by Rickson. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American at the time to receive that honor. Dan Hart is a Henry Akins blackbelt and owner of Alpha BJJ in Woodstock, IL. In addition to coaching both at his academy and seminars all over the world he is also an accomplished restauranteur and entrepreneur. British officials and space scientists said they were disappointed but not deterred after the first attempt to launch satellites into orbit from the U.K. ended in failure. U.S.-based Virgin Orbit attempted its first international launch late January 9, using a modified jumbo jet to carry one of its rockets from Cornwall in southwestern England over the Atlantic Ocean. The plane released the rocket, carrying nine small satellites for a mix of civilian and domestic uses. But about two hours after the plane took off, the company reported “an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit.” The plane, piloted by a Royal Air Force pilot, returned to Cornwall. The rocket and satellites were destroyed. “We're feeling awful, to be honest – I'm not going to lie,” Melissa Thorpe, head of Spaceport Cornwall, said. “This isn't the first time we've been knocked, this is the biggest definitely, but I feel OK and we'll get up and we'll go again,” she said. Virgin Orbit, which was founded by British transport and telecommunications tycoon Richard Branson, previously completed four similar launches from California. Hundreds of people gathered for the Cornwall launch had cheered when a repurposed Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 aircraft, named Cosmic Girl, took off last Jan. 9. Around an hour into the flight, the plane released the rocket at around 35,000 feet (around 10,000 meters) over the Atlantic Ocean to the south of Ireland. Virgin Orbit chief executive Dan Hart said “a technical failure appears to have prevented us from delivering the final orbit.” “While we are very proud of the many things that we have successfully achieved as part of this mission, we are mindful that we failed to provide our customers with the launch service they deserve,” he said. The mission was a collaboration between the U.K. Space Agency, the Royal Air Force, Virgin Orbit and Cornwall Council. Britain hopes to become a major player in making and launching satellites and is building a spaceport in the Shetland Islands north of Scotland as well as the one in Cornwall. Pappy hosts Jordan, Stevie, and special guests from the FilmInk Official Film Thoughts Podcast Dan Hart @FilmInkOfficial and Laura Boyes @LauraBoyes2. In the last and the best installment of his so-called Dollars trilogy of Sergio Leone-directed spaghetti westerns, Clint Eastwood reprised the role of a taciturn, enigmatic loner. Here he searches for a cache of stolen gold against rivals the Bad (Lee Van Cleef), a ruthless bounty hunter, and the Ugly (Eli Wallach), a Mexican bandit. Though dubbed the Good, Eastwood's character is not much better than his opponents -- he is just smarter and shoots faster. The film's title reveals its ironic attitude toward the canonized heroes of the classical western. The real West was the world of violence, fear, and brutal instincts, claimed Leone. In pursuit of profit there is no such thing as good and evil, generosity or deviousness; everything depends on chance, and not the best wins but the luckiest. Immensely entertaining and beautifully shot in Techniscope by Tonino Delli Colli, the movie is a virtually definitive spaghetti western, rivaled only by Leone's own Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). The main musical theme by Ennio Morricone hit #1 on the British pop charts. Originally released in Italy at 177 minutes, the movie was later cut for its international release. Week by week Dan Hart pieces together and reviews the latest films and industry news with his co-host Laura Boyes. They both love films, and they probably discuss them way too much, but it provides an entertaining discussion. Despite the pleas of terrified citizens everywhere, it finally happened: The Flopcast LIVE! June 22, in Wheeling, Illinois, Kevin and Kornflake were onstage at FumpFest, a convention dedicated to funny music (and also, apparently, goofy podcasts). In front of a captive audience (oh yes, we locked the doors), we presented National Whatever Day (which may have involved eating an escalator), Chickens in the News (a special Chicago-themed edition), and What's in the Bag (really just an excuse to throw stuff at people). Joining us onstage were special guests Chris of Power Salad, the great Luke Ski, and of course, Doornail. (Guess which one of our special guests giggled nonstop and fell on the floor?) Then stay tuned for a post-show bonus clip: our friend Dan Hart, also live onstage at FumpFest, performing during Dr. Demento's Festival of Dementia! Now excuse us; we have to go backstage to meet and greet a bunch of stupid radio contest winners.
Kevin and Kornflake prepare to run screaming out of Chickentown, because it's almost time for FumpFest! This is a comedy music convention, so we'll be hanging out with all our demented friends (such as Insane Ian, Power Salad, Dan Hart, Carrie Dahlby, Luke Ski, Devo Spice, Worm Quartet...), plus a bunch of silly performers we'll be meeting for the first time. (Hopefully our beards of bees will make a positive first impression.) FumpFest also has the Logan Awards (for excellence in comedy music), live onstage podcasts (including The Flopcast!), Dementia Smackdown Wrestling (time for Kornflake to defend her title), and... DOCTOR DEMENTO! So yikes, kids, get yourselves to Wheeling, Illinois, June 20-22, for FumpFest! Bring a duck, perhaps.
