Steve Kopesky and Ted Rubinstein on Jimmy Hoffa - part 2YesterdaySteve Kopesky and Ted Rubinstein return with more on the fascinating life of Jimmy Hoffa.Jimmy Hoffa (born February 14, 1913, Brazil, Indiana, U.S.—disappeared July 30, 1975, Bloomfield Hills, near Detroit, Michigan) was an American labour leader who served as president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1957 to 1971 and was one of the most controversial labour organizers of his time. The son of an Indiana coal miner who died when Hoffa was seven, Hoffa moved with his family to Detroit in 1924. He left school at age 14, worked as a stock boy and warehouseman for several years, and began his union-organizing activities in the 1930s. Initially the business agent for Local 299 in Detroit, Hoffa by 1940 had become chairman of the Central States Drivers Council and by 1942 president of the Michigan Conference of Teamsters. In 1952 he was elected an international vice president of the Teamsters, and five years later he succeeded Dave Beck as international president.Known throughout the trucking industry as a tough and knowledgeable bargainer, Hoffa successfully centralized administration and bargaining in the international office of the union. He also played a key role in the creation of the first national freight-hauling agreement. His efforts helped make the Teamsters the largest labour union in the United States.Known to have long associated with organized crime figures, Hoffa nevertheless survived a series of governmental prosecutions until 1967, when he entered the federal prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to begin a 13-year sentence for jury tampering, fraud, and conspiracy. Hoffa refused to resign as president of the Teamsters while in prison and kept his position until 1971. U.S. Pres. Richard M. Nixon commuted Hoffa's sentence in December 1971, stipulating that he could not engage in any union activity until 1980. Hoffa, however, fought the restriction in court and was widely believed to have covertly continued his efforts to reestablish a union position. On July 30, 1975, he disappeared from a restaurant in suburban Detroit under circumstances that have never been fully determined. He was said to have had an appointment at the restaurant with Anthony Provenzano, a New Jersey Teamsters official and former Mafia figure, and Anthony Giacalone, a Detroit mobster; both later denied having encountered Hoffa, who was never seen again. He was legally declared “presumed dead” in 1982.Tags#hoffa#kennedy#mccarthyhearings#teamsters#truecrine#vanishedBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

In the fourth episode of our new series examining historical allegations of union corruption and relations with organized crime, we discuss the McClellan Committee investigations into the power of organized labor. We talk about the differences between how the committee's investigations were portrayed, as a fight against corruption, and the actions of the committee, which minimized its focus on corruption and instead took aim at worker power. We discuss the downfall of Teamster president Dave Beck and his replacement by Jimmy Hoffa, and the start of the 10 year crusade against Hoffa by Robert Kennedy. In future episodes, we will discuss the period of Hoffa's presidency of the Teamsters, his corrupt dealings with major mob figures, and his attempts to stay out of jail. If you're not a patron you can get the full episode by visiting patreon.com/workstoppage and support us with $5 a month. In the third episode of our new series examining historical allegations of union corruption and relations with organized crime, we discuss the changing of the guard at the top of the Teamsters, from the long era of Daniel Tobin's presidency, to the rise of Dave Beck and Jimmy Hoffa. We discuss Beck and Hoffa's real talent for organizing and the way their efforts helped the Teamsters experience massive growth in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. But we also discuss their opportunism and openness to corrupt deals with mob figures, which hurt the interests of the entire rank and file. We cover the way both Hoffa and Beck's devotion to their own personal power and wealth influenced their adherence to business unionist style of leadership which created the conditions for the mafia to get a foothold in the union. In future episodes, we will discuss the confrontation between the Teamsters and the US government, largely personified by the Kennedys, during the McClellan Committee investigations. If you're not a patron you can get the full episode by visiting patreon.com/workstoppage and support us with $5 a month. In the second episode of our new series examining historical allegations of union corruption and relations with organized crime, we discuss the Daniel Tobin era of the Teamsters from the first decade of the 20th century to the end of WW2. In this period, massive technological changes revolutionized the work of Teamsters, shifting from driving teams of horses in busy urban streets to interstate motorized trucking. This period also saw the rise of the mafia during the years of Prohibition. With the ruling class desperate for a scapegoat to blame for the collapse of the economy during the Great Depression, the capitalist press seized on the opportunity to attack the unions, and so they immediately made the association between unions and the mob. In this episode, we discuss both real instances of corrupt union officials working with mobsters, but also heroic struggles by union leaders to fight the mob, some even paying with their lives. In future episodes, we will discuss the rise of Dave Beck as Teamster President, Congress's attempt to go after unions with the McClellan Committee, and the dawn of the Hoffa Era. This week on Downtown Menom we chat with Downtown Menomonie Board Member and Distilled game creator, Dave Beck. Distilled is an upcoming table top game release all about crafting spirits. The game was so popular on Kickstarter that it made the front page of the website, now Beck has expanded the game into dozens of languages and is set to ship across the world. Beck has a vast knowledge of whiskey and more. Check out this amazing success story. Hosts: Becca Schoenborn and Dustyn Dubuque. Learn more about Paverson Games on Facebook.
Kait was off and so the other three hosts decided that this we were going to kill off a relative so that we could inherit the family's abandoned distillery and bring it back to it's former glory. This all makes since 2 of them don't do hard spirits and the other is more of a wine person. But you know, sometimes you gotta try out new things. That's right, I'm sure you have guessed it by now, we're playing Distilled from Paverson Games, designed by Dave Beck and published in 2022. Post your comments to Twitter/Instagram @FirstTurnCast or email us at firstturntabletop@gmail.com. Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe! Until next week, play more games!
Easily a personal favorite, this conversation with Dave touched on a lot of subjects and ideas close to my heart. Dave's story begins with an almost whimsical decision to move to a yacht for (initially) 2 years, and continues with his discovery and further exploration of Intuition. Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: Stephen Magnusson Listen to Steve Magnusson's answers to the questions below: Why do you transcribe? 03:47 What do you expect to learn from a transcription? 17:41 How do you choose the solos to transcribe? 24:21 What is your transcribing methodology? 33:08 Do you use any software? 45:45 Which transcription of yours is your favourite? 01:09:05 Artists mentioned in this episode: Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Dmitri Sostakovic, Charlie Parker, Charles Lloyd, Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Brad Mehldau, Sonny Rollins a.o. Stephen Magnusson is considered one of Australia's most accomplished, versatile and distinct musicians with incredible technique and an astoundingly beautiful tone. His hectic schedule shows that he is a delight to work with and someone that has ‘something to say' in the world of improvised music. He was given his first ukulele at 3, his first guitar at 6 and began performing at 10 on an electric guitar that he loaned from his schoolteacher. At 13, he started to study under the guidance of Gordon Pendleton at the Box Hill Tafe and discovered the world of improvised music. In 1986, he studied at the esteemed Victorian College of the Arts under the supervision of some of Australia's finest musicians – Tony Gould, Bob Sedergreen and Mike Doyle. Here he expanded his practice regime and playing. He joined various bands playing numerous styles and developed an understanding of different methods. But, his main focus remained, to develop and hone the craft of mastering the guitar. He travelled to Europe and lived there and after being appointed on the staff at The Academy of Contemporary Music (Zurich) in 1997, Stephen met his long time collaborator – Sergio Beresovsky. They began to perform regularly with Swedish bassist – Bjorn Meyer and in the July of the same year, Australian saxophonist Julien Wilson travelled to meet and play with the trio. After the first week of playing, they formed SNAG and produced a self-titled album (released in Australia ‘Hey Guess What'). After 3 years of living in Zurich, Stephen returned to Melbourne in August 2000. He entered the National Jazz Award at Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival, where he tied for first place amongst much controversy. At this festival, he performed with his trio featuring Sergio and Eugene Ball. This recorded result is captured on the CD ‘Healing Songs'. He has worked with many artists including Charlie Haden, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ricki Lee Jones, Sinead O'Connor, John Cale, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Paul Grabowsky, Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Lisa Young, Christine Sullivan, Michelle Nicole, Martin Breeze, The Assumptions Trio, Megan Washington, Paul Kelly, Jim Black, Mike Nock, Barney McAll, Enrico Rava, Arthur Blythe and many others. As a part of the Katie Noonan trio Elixir, the ensemble won the ARIA for Best Jazz Album in 2011. In 2013, Stephen was awarded the Melbourne Prize for Outstanding Musician, and the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album with his quartet MAGNET (with Carl Pannuzzo, Eugene Ball and Sergio Beresovsky). Stephen is currently concentrating on writing for his duo Boundaries with Frank DiSario, and trio MAG featuring DiSario and Dave Beck. He will also be completing the second release from MAGNET, SOM. In this well-shuffled, cleanly dealt interview with Dave Beck of Paverson Games, some of the topics we discuss include: How a trip to Scotland sparked the idea for a game that would challenge players to distill, age, and sell their own spirits...all thanks to an inheritance from a long-lost relative. Why Distilled is considered a “medium weight, Euro-style game, and what it looks like to make booze using cards, tokens, and distiller avatars. How the Kickstarter campaign for this product met its funding goal in less than an hour, on its way to eclipsing that goal by over 15,000%. Which technical distilling processes were creatively mixed into the game mechanics of Distilled, and which needed to be saved perhaps for a future edition, including heads and tales cuts, the Angel's share, and pulling flavor notes from wood. How the game educates and introduces players to spirits from different cultures, using avatars based on historical distillers from around the world - all with special recipe and abilities. Along the way, we talk about why American games are so confrontational, the simple joy of summoning elevators, how to order a proper brandy old fashioned at a Wisconsin supper club, and much, much more. Today we sit down with Board Game designed, Dave Beck. He has created a board game- DISTILLED, which is a medium-weight, thematic strategy card game about the science & business of crafting alcoholic spirits in a distillery. In the game, you have inherited a distillery, and are hoping to someday achieve the title of master distiller, through purchasing goods, building up your distillery, and creating the world's most renowned spirits. So join Sean, Paul Bovis and I as we dive with Dave into the game's inner workings and it's conceptual beginnings. Following that, we sit with Paul and discuss where is passion for whisky stems from and the community he has grown to love.

In this episode, we welcome Tyler Coleman and Dave Beck from Kanati Taxidermy on the show to take a deep dive into the world of taxidermy. Far removed from the one-man band in the garage down a dirt road, Kanati is a world-class taxidermy operation out of Pennsylvania serving clients all across the country and beyond. Tyler and Dave walk us through the entire process from harvest to finished product and show us what it takes to preserve memories so that you can relive the hunt for years to come. Along the way, they share a few tips for how to time, select, and care for your harvest, both, in the field all the way to the time you drop it off at your taxidermist. The Kanati boys were kind enough to share all sorts of helpful information and their time and we were blown away at the craftsmanship and passion that they have for what they do. These guys are a riot and you won't find two nicer guys. Check it out! If you like the show, share it with a friend. Don't forget to subscribe so you won't miss an episode. Developing a pilot or a proof of concept is among the first steps to introducing XR into your industry, but that's only going to provide so much ROI unless you can fully implement that idea. Dave Beck from Foundry 45 discusses how to make that leap. Alan: Hey, everyone, Alan Smithson here. Today, we're speaking with Dave Beck, founder and managing partner at Foundry 45, an immersive technology company that develops enterprise level virtual reality training experiences. They've created over 250 experiences for notable clients such as AT&T, Coca-Cola, Delta, and UPS. We're going to be discussing going from PoCs, pilots, and case studies to full scale deployments. All that and more, on the XR for Business podcast. Dave, welcome to the show. Dave: Hey, Alan, thanks so much for having me on here. Alan: It's my absolute pleasure. I'm super excited. You guys have been doing so much work in the VR training space. First of all, let's just talk about, what is Foundry 45? How did you get into this? And we'll kick it off from there. Dave: I guess first off, it's nice to chat with you again. I went back and checked my email, and it looks like the first time you and I talked was way back in 2016. So a lot's happened in that time, hasn't it? So, OK, we put VR to work by creating virtual reality training experiences for enterprise partners. And we specialize in industrial-- think hard skills type training. I've actually been working in immersive technology for almost a decade now. Initially it was in augmented reality, which was something that we added on the side for a SAS product we built, that was actually our main business during that time. And we did a lot of stuff where you would hold up your phone or a piece of industrial equipment, and it would tell you where to wrench on it or how to change the filter, things like that. It was cool technology, but we pretty quickly realized that no one was going to hold a phone or an iPad over a piece of industrial equipment on an oil rig. They weren't going to set it down and start wrenching on something, and then pick it up with greasy hands. [chuckles] So what we wanted to do was hands-free AR, but the technology just wasn't there. We exited that company in 2014, and we were trying to figure out what we wanted to do when we grow up. Alan: You exited your company in 2014. Most people didn't even know what this technology was when you guys were exiting your first one and getting into the second. Think about that. Dave: Yeah. I mean, we were trying to figure out what we wanted to be when we grew up. And one of my co-founders bought an early innovators edition of Samsung Gear VR. Do you remember that one? Alan: I have the one with a solid strap on top. Dave: Yeah. Did you strap the Android phone into the headset? Alan: Exactly. Dave: Yeah. And you could use that camera on the back of the phone as a pass-through. Alan: Yes. Well, not very well, but yes, you could. Dave: Well, yeah, it's funny. You know where this is going, right? Because we wanted to use it for hands-free AR, but it didn't work at all. Alan: Not without making people very sick. Dave: Yeah, the processor wasn't good enough. It was super laggy, which kind of made it nauseating. So that wasn't going to work. But wow, VR was awesome. That's when we made the decision to start down our current path. Alan: And that was before ARCore and ARKit. So planer tracking really wasn't a thing. Slim mapping, it was not that easy to do. Dave: Yeah. I mean, just

One of the themes of Seattle Symphony music director Thomas Dausgaard’s artistic life is his deep, joyful fascination with creativity and how music connects us all. Thomas speaks with KING FM’s Dave Beck about how that philosophy is reflected in the programming presented during the SSO’s 2020-2021 concert season. The new season has just recently been announced.
Zack Hudson sits down with Dave Beck, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Foundry 45. Dave shares how his curiosity and desire for leadership growth led to him eventually helping start one of the hottest VR training companies in the U.S You'll also hear Dave talk about the value of staying true to yourself, the importance of managing your resources well and why you should be involved in your community.
Each of the pieces on the Seattle Symphony program this week have very personal associations for Music Director Thomas Dausgaard. He led Grieg’s ”Peer Gynt Suite” at his professional conducting debut. He was a young cellist in a Copenhagen youth symphony when he first played the Carl Nielsen First Symphony. And as he told Classical KING FM’s Dave Beck this week, his experience in the Russian dacha where Shostakovich once composed string quartets left a deep impression on the young conductor Thomas Dausgaard.
Jean Efflam Bavouzet, this week’s guest pianist at the Seattle Symphony, has recorded the complete piano sonatas of Haydn, the complete piano concertos of Mozart, and all of the Prokofiev piano concertos. His passion for the piano might seem all-consuming. But Bavouzet finds time to savor everything from great jazz to the wonders of the world of model railroading. The energetic and effusive French pianist Mr. Bavouzet shares a fascination for miniature mechanical devices with one of his musical heroes, Maurice Ravel. He talks about jazz, trains, Beethoven and more with Classical KING FM’s Dave Beck.
“Be Prepared” is not only a motto in the world of scouting, but it’s good advice for those who work as Associate Conductors of professional symphony orchestras. Lee Mills holds that position with the Seattle Symphony. When the orchestra’s music director, Thomas Dausgaard, was unable to conduct the season opening dress rehearsal due to illness, Lee stepped in to lead the rehearsal at the last minute. Lee grew up in the small city of Belgrade, Montana and began to pursuit music seriously after his physics studies didn’t quite work out how he had hoped. Lee Mills’ path as a conductor has taken him to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil where he’s served for the past 5 years as resident conductor of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. KING FM’s Dave Beck talks to Lee Mills on this edition of our Seattle Symphony Podcast.
A signature programming approach of Seattle Symphony Music Director Thomas Dausgaard is to collaborate with folk musicians in exploring the roots of symphonic music by composers like Rachmaninoff and Sibelius. This week’s SSO performances of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” in Benaroya Hall are preceded by a 20 minute presentation exploring the folk roots of Stravinsky’s revolutionary 1913 ballet score. Dausgaard talks with Dave Beck about the performers of traditional folk music and dance who will be on the Benaroya Hall stage this week with the SSO. We’ll find out how these folk artists take us into the ancient sound world of Lithuanian folk music that Stravinsky studied in creating "The Rite of Spring."
For about a year, Seattle Symphony Principal Cellist Efe Baltacigil has been in conversation with Seattle-based composer Angelique Poteat as the two have collaborated on this week’s world premiere of Angelique’s new cello concerto. Angelique is a much admired clarinetist and composer with deep ties to the Seattle Symphony. She’s already had orchestral and chamber works performed by the players in the orchestra, and she’s participated over the years in the Seattle Symphony’s Merriman Family Young Composer Workshops. Her music has been heard not only in Seattle but throughout the United States and in Australia, Japan and across Europe. Efe Baltacigil talks with KING FM’s Dave Beck about Efe’s admiration for the craft and musicianship of this gifted young composer. Efe says Angelique has even woven Efe’s love for jazz and the art of improvisation into the new concerto.
Andy Liang, a member of the Seattle Symphony’s first violin section, wasn’t so sure how committed he was to music when it was time to decide where he would go to college. Andy had played in Carnegie Hall and appeared on the NPR Program From the Top in his teen years. So he had the talent to study pretty much anywhere he wanted. But his interests outside of music gave him second thoughts about where he saw his life going. That all changed when Andy found out about a violinist hero of his who was going to be teaching at Rice University in Texas. Andy took up that story with us when he visited recently at Classical KING FM and spoke with host Dave Beck.
Augustin Hadelich returns to Benaroya Hall this week to play the Brahms Violin Concerto. In 2016, Augustin won the Grammy for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his performance of Henri Dutilleux’s Violin Concerto, The Tree of Dreams, with the Seattle Symphony and Music Director Emeritus Ludovic Morlot. KING FM’s Dave Beck speaks with Augustin about his long association with the Brahms Violin Concerto, a work he first performed publicly when he was just 10 years old. We hear how Augustin Hadelich wrote his own cadenza for the Brahms Concerto, a piece he has recently recorded. We get an informative primer from Augustin on the tradition and history of the cadenza in famous violin concertos. And he talks about the challenges of writing a cadenza in the authentic style of Brahms.
This week we hear from Peter Oundjian, who stepped in on short notice to guest conduct the Seattle Symphony. Oundjian is Conductor Emeritus of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, where he was music director for 14 years. He’s conducting the SSO this week in place of Cristian Macelaru who could not be here due to illness. Oundjian talks about his admiration for the music of Felix Mendelssohn as heard in the composer’s “Scottish” Symphony on the program this week. He tells Dave Beck about how his many years as first violinist in the Tokyo String Quartet inform his interpretation of symphonic music, and speaks on his recent return to the violin after a neurological condition forced him to put down the instrument in the mid-1990s.
Dave Beck speaks with guest conductor Masaaki Suzuki. Together with his son, Masato Suzuki, Masaaki has created a performing version of Mozart’s very last composition, the famously unfinished Requiem Mass. The piece was written by Mozart on his deathbed and it was left to his students and others to complete the work. Masaaki Suzuki leads the SSO, Seattle Symphony Chorale and vocal soloists in Benaroya Hall this week in an edition of the Requiem that the Suzukis put together from fragments of the music Mozart left behind. All three of the works on the program this week explore topics of mourning and loss. There are also works by Toru Takemitsu and Karl Amadeus Hartmann on the program.
We meet the occupant of the Charles Simonyi Principal Horn Chair in the Seattle Symphony. Jeffrey Fair has been playing in the SSO since 2003 when Gerard Schwarz was music director. In 2013 he won the principal horn position during Ludovic Morlot’s tenure as music director. Jeff Fair tells KING FM’s Dave Beck about Jeff’s journey as a musician from a grade school child picking up the french horn for the first time in Oklahoma, to performing the pinnacle horn solos of the symphonic repertory with one of the world’s finest orchestras, the Seattle Symphony.
Krishna Thiagarajan is the President and CEO of the Seattle Symphony. He spoke with Dave Beck during intermission of the Seattle Symphony’s opening night concert for 2019-2020, broadcast live on Classical KING FM. Krishna talks about how the Seattle Symphony’s community engagement efforts serve audiences with financial, physical and mental challenges. And he says that kind of compassionate vision and service is reflected in the depth of music making that SSO musicians brings to the stage.
Thomas Dausgaard is the energetic, Danish-born conductor who leads his first concerts as the new Seattle Symphony Music Director this month. He is brimming with enthusiasm about the future of the SSO and about the view of Seattle from his new apartment near Benaroya Hall. He loves the stunning view of the Olympic Mountains and the Seattle Waterfront. That connection to nature is just one of the themes reflected in Maestro Dausgaard’s opening night program this week with the Seattle Symphony. Thomas Dausgaard speaks with KING FM’s Dave Beck.

“Plastic is not the problem. It's plastic waste that is problematic.”Dave Beck (12:27 - 12:31) Dave Beck is the National Sales Director at rPlanet Earth, a company dedicated to the mission of zero plastic waste on planet earth. rPlanet Earth is a well-capitalized, innovative manufacturer reusing post-consumer plastics as a feedstock to produce the highest quality packaging with the lowest carbon footprint. The problem with eliminating plastic. Today, the consensus seems to be that plastic is the enemy. Plastic isn't biodegradable, like paper, and it can hang around in the environment for a long time. A lot of plastic waste ends up in the oceans, and it harms the ecosystem. Contrary to what we may think, eliminating plastic isn't the best answer. In the United States, we can easily access clean water, and we take it for granted. However, in many parts of the world, people rely on plastic bottles to keep their drinking water clean. In America, plastic plays a vital role in keeping our produce fresh as it is transported from the growers to the consumer, and it prevents a significant amount of food waste. Eliminating plastic would cause produce prices to skyrocket, which might contribute to lower vegetable consumption and more diseases like obesity. “Globally, human beings buy a million plastic bottles per minute. There are many parts of the world where people depend on plastic bottles for the basic life necessity of clean drinking water.” - Lori Taylor (10:38 - 10:57) Plastic isn't necessarily the problem. What's problematic is how we reuse plastic, and how much of it is wasted. When you recycle plastic, it typically gets downcycled into things like carpet fiber. While that's definitely better than the plastic ending up in the ocean, in an ideal world there would be a way to recycle a plastic bottle back into a bottle or container. That's precisely what the company rPlanet Earth aims to do. Their founding vision is to eliminate all plastic waste from the planet. They've integrated recycling and manufacturing under one roof. Their founders recognized that too much of the plastic packaging that could be reused to make new plastic was ending up in landfills. Driven by their concern and care for the planet, the rPlanet Earth founders created a manufacturing process the reuses post-consumer plastics as the raw material to produce the highest quality packaging with the lowest carbon footprint. How rPlanet Earth is combating plastic waste for sustainability. rPlanet Earth collects the plastic bottles and food containers the consumers throw away. They extract the PET, the type of plastic most widely used in consumer packaging products, from the waste and run it through an intensive wash cycle. Through this process, rPlanet Earth can re-produce plastic that is FDA-approved for use in creating food packaging. Through their unique plastic processing techniques, rPlanet Earth can recycle plastic back into consumer products over and over again. So, they're reducing waste, and the need to produce new plastic bottles and containers. rPlanet Earth has partnered with Plastic Recycling Corporation of California (PRCC), a non-profit organization, to source plastic waste from all over the state. “The biggest technological breakthrough in PET plastic recycling, in recent years, has been the ability to boost all the physical properties of post-consumer plastic to a virgin state for an infinite number of times.” - Dave Beck (6:38 - 6:50) For the sake of our planet, we need more organizations like rPlanet Earth to make elimination of plastic waste a priority. The responsibility doesn't lie with business and government agencies alone. As citizens of planet Earth, we all have the duty to join together and help care for our planet.
