November 1963 war so ein Moment. Für einen Augenblick stockte Millionen von Menschen der Atem. In aller Welt hingen Menschen am Radio. Nur 15 Minuten vergingen von den ersten Meldungen bis zur Todesnachricht.Das Entsetzen über die Ermordung des Thronfolgerpaares in Sarajevo rund 50 Jahre zuvor am 28. Juni 1914 war ein vergleichbarer Schock. Jedoch las man erst am Tag danach in den Zeitungen davon. Diese Schüsse lösten den Ersten Weltkrieg aus.Es wurde so manche Herrscher ermordet, der viel Macht in Händen hielt: Julius Cäsar (44 v. Chr.); Abraham Lincoln (1865); der Zar von Russland (1918). Es wurden auch Menschen ermordet, die sich um Frieden bemühten: Mahatma Gandhi (1948); Martin Luther King (1968); Jitzchak Rabin (1995). Und stets war das Entsetzen groß. Auch Tyrannen sind gestorben, deren Tod die Menschen wie ein Keulenschlag traf. Ebenso sind Wohltäter gestorben, und kaum einer nahm Notiz davon.Warum aber löste der grausame Tod von Jesus vor rund 2000 Jahren keine Schockwelle des Entsetzens aus? Warum trug nicht die ganze Menschheit Leid um den besten ihrer Söhne? Es waren nur wenige, die Anteil an seinem Tod nahmen. Over the next two thousand years, the story achieved legendary status in literature, theater and film. We watch as Elizabeth Taylor weeps over his death. Shakespeare brings us Marc Anthony's rhetorical masterpiece, “Friends! Romans, Country men! Lend me your ears!” Even HBO gets into the act, with a sympathetic portrayal of Cæsar that received applause and praise worthy of Marc Anthony. For the men who founded a new country in 1776, history was different than Hollywood and Shakespeare. They had been raised on the writings of Cato, steeped in the concepts of liberty and freedom. To a man, they saw Cæsar as he actually was, as Brutus and Cassius saw him – a usurper of tradition and, more importantly, the absolute law of the Republic of Rome. The fact that Cæsar was beloved, even by his opponents, did not undo the fact that he was trying to put the crown of Rome on his own head. And no Roman republican could accept that. America would choose to follow in the footsteps not of Cæsar, but in the ideas and actions of those who killed him. He goes on to talk about putting faith into action through works of service to others. Hi this is Bishop Julius C Trimble.    I have a mission “to encourage all people with the love of Jesus Christ to rise to their highest potential” - in short, to be encouraged.   I get encouraged when I hear stories of good news. It could be a gospel story like Jesus encouraging Zacchaeus about going to his house or one of our United Methodist Churches serving the needs of the homeless in their community or even the laughter of my own granddaughter. I am compelled by Jesus to share with you an encouraging word or two about Jesus, theology, the bible, the pandemic, the environment, racism, voting rights, human sexuality, and state of the United Methodist Church.   I also think we rise to our highest potential when we listen and learn from others. I love to talk with and be encouraged by having conversations with insightful experts who help make me better.  These are challenging times in our world and in our United Methodist Church to be sure and those matters need to be addressed.  I just think we can talk about everything in the light of the overwhelming love of Jesus Christ and that is encouraging indeed.
