The Art of Raising Humans
Why Teens Need a Rite of Passage and Parents Need One Too with Dr Arne Rubinstein

What if our teenagers' risky choices, rebellion, or need to prove themselves are partly attempts to answer a deeper question: Am I ready to grow up, and does anyone see who I am becoming? For thousands of years, communities intentionally helped young people transition from childhood into adulthood. Today, many teenagers are left to create their own rites of passage through drinking, drugs, sexual experiences, reckless behavior, or other choices they believe will prove they are grown. In this episode, Kyle and Sara talk with Dr Arne Rubinstein about how parents can help teenagers experience this transition in a healthier, more meaningful way. Dr Arne explains why teenagers need belonging, emotional safety, meaningful challenges, trusted adults, and opportunities to discover the gifts they can contribute to the world. He also shares how families can create an intentional rite of passage without needing an elaborate ceremony or extended retreat. But this process is not only about helping teenagers mature. Parents must also be willing to change. As children move toward adulthood, parents are invited to release some control, relate to them differently, and create space for greater responsibility, independence, and trust. Without that shift, even a powerful experience can quickly dissolve when the family returns to its old patterns. This conversation will help you see adolescence as more than a difficult stage to survive. It is a pivotal season in which parents can help young people develop purpose, confidence, responsibility, and a clearer vision of the adults they want to become. In this episode, you'll discover:• Why teenagers often create their own unhealthy rites of passage• The three stages of a meaningful transition into adulthood• Why stories and vulnerability can reach teens more effectively than lectures• How challenges, vision, and recognition help teenagers discover who they are• Why boys and girls may need different forms of support during adolescence• How to honor your teenager's natural gifts and strengths• Why parents must go through a transition alongside their children• Practical ways to continue the growth after the meaningful moment is over About Dr Arne RubinsteinDr Arne Rubinstein, OAM, is the founder and director of the Rites of Passage Institute and a globally recognized expert on rites of passage. After 15 years in emergency medicine, he dedicated his work to helping young people, families, schools, and communities navigate major life transitions. Send us Fan Mail You can swear you will not do it again, then watch yourself do the exact same thing anyway. That repeat loop is not proof you are broken. It is proof there is a pattern, and patterns have roots. We sit down with  Karen Rubinstein, radical resilience expert and author of The Return Way, to talk about why our reactions keep returning even when our intentions are solid. Karen shares how recovery forced her to stop treating behaviors like the problem and start treating them like signals. We use her dandelion-root metaphor to make sense of the subconscious: you can pull the visible weed, but the deep root keeps feeding the same emotional trigger, the same relationship conflict, the same burnout, or the same numb-out habit. Karen breaks down her six-step framework in clear language: Reveal what is happening, Explore the thoughts, Trace where you have felt it before, Uncover the fear underneath, Rewrite the story with a more truthful lens, then Nurture the new response until it becomes natural. You will hear a real-life example of a marriage moment that could have turned into anger and distance, but instead becomes calm communication and repair. We also talk honestly about what to do when the method feels like it “stops working” and you realize you have hit a deeper core wound, including when it is wise to bring in a therapist or trusted guide. If you want practical tools for self-awareness, emotional resilience, healing old wounds, and changing behavior patterns that keep repeating, press play. Allegra Goodman recently published a collection of short stories called This is Not About Us. The irony is that the book is very much about us. She describes the Rubinstein family of Greater Boston. The kids went to Maimonides. Much of the action takes place in Brookline. There are stories of day-to-day life in Boston, and in Jewish Boston, that will feel deeply familiar. I felt I was reading about us. One of those stories, Redemption Song, is about how a family does Passover together where they have very different approaches to the holiday. The patriarch, Irving, was a Holocaust survivor and ran a stern, joyless Maxwell House seder that scarred his young sons, Dan and Steven. When they grow up, both living in Brookline, they have very different approaches to the seders. There are vegans and pot roast lovers. There are Maxwell House adherents—just read what is in the Haggadah—and innovative voices that put oranges, bananas, and other objects on the seder table to represent various oppressed peoples. There are family members who don't believe in instrumental music, and others who love to sing and play guitar. There are people who love deep conversation about deep topics, and others who just want to get on with it. The title of the story comes from the last song that Bob Marley composed, Redemption Song, while facing his own mortality, contending with advanced cancer. His song tackles this question: how we can achieve freedom from the forces that constrain us? How do we achieve redemption? Allegra Goodman's story ends with the younger generation singing this song. Please read the story. Please listen to the song. What do the story and the song teach us about how we can achieve our Redemption Song at our upcoming seders and in the world at this hard time?

Dr. Rubinstein's team approached this research with extreme care, focusing on respect, consent, and the ethical challenges of studying trauma in real time.Together, they discuss:Why Dr. Rubinstein became interested in studying trauma at the moment it happens, not years laterHow the research team worked respectfully with survivors in the aftermath of mass traumaThe challenges of studying real-world substance use without lab-verified dosingWhy survivors who had taken classic psychedelics reported lower anxiety and fewer early PTSD symptoms compared with other groupsHow timing and state of consciousness during trauma may influence how the brain encodes memory and fearWhat we can, and cannot, conclude from an early, observational studyWhy these findings do not justify self-experimentation, but may justify further controlled researchWhat mental health professionals and policymakers should take away from this workHow doing trauma research has shaped Dr. Rubinstein's own understanding of resilience and healingThis conversation does not promote psychedelic substance use. Instead, it explores how brain state, context, and timing may shape trauma responses, and why studying these questions responsibly matters.Content note: This episode discusses trauma related to the October 7 attacks. In the annals of US military history, there are no doubt many unsolved and perplexing mysteries, but few could compare to the fate of the US Navy spy ship that was mercilessly attacked by one of its closest allies intentionally and without warning. One of the reasons it is still a mystery is because it is also the only peacetime attack on a US naval vessel that, to this day, has never been investigated by the Congress of the United States. The USS Liberty was a 455-foot, 10,150-ton electronic intercept spy ship, originally a standard-design Victory Ship--a more evolved version of the World War II Liberty Ships--which were built as supply ships, not intended for direct fighting. The Liberty had been converted to an Auxiliary Technical Research Ship (AGTR), known colloquially as a "spy ship," first deployed in 1965; its top speed was only 18 knots.Yet the Liberty's fate, one of the most enigmatic, unresolved military mysteries of all time, is, paradoxically at its core, quite clear-cut and undisputed. The basic facts generally accepted by all are that, on the fourth day of the Six Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors (Egypt, Syria and Jordan), the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) savagely attacked the U.S. spy ship, the USS Liberty. On the warm, sunny-bright day of June 8, 1967, starting at about 6:00 a.m., at least twelve, possibly thirteen Israeli aircraft of different types began surveilling the Liberty, some of which were only 1,000 feet or less in altitude, apparently to photograph and "map" her for later targeting purposes. The precision of the later attack could only have been accomplished through such pre-planning, specifically identifying the priority targets, starting with the gun mounts to render the ship defenseless, followed by all of the forty-five different radio antennae and related transmitting equipment. . Beginning just before 2:00 p.m., three unmarked French-built Mirage III-C swept-wing fighter jets, without warning, settled into a triangular formation, aimed straight at the Liberty and proceeded to bore down on the ship in a fast low-level attack that began with rockets targeted at the four gun mounts and heat-seeking missiles aimed at the communications gear, with their warmed transmitters. . When the attack was over, thirty-four men were dead and one hundred seventy-four were injured to varying degrees, some near death.Unlike all other books ever written about the tragic attack - none of which provide a satisfactory explanation of what really caused it - Remember the Liberty! examines it in complete context of how it was positioned there by Johnson himself, for the very purpose of being attacked, and sunk, with every one of the 294 men on board going to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. His purpose was to use that event - while blaming Egyptian President Gamal Nasser for the attack - as a pretext for joining Israel in the war, even at the risk of igniting World War III with the Soviet Union. This book provides the only realistic explanation for why Lyndon Johnson did what he did, and why, in the heat of battle, he intervened with his Navy officers who were determined to rescue the Liberty and ordered them to recall the squadrons of fighter jets they had already dispatched - twice, 90 minutes apart - for that purpose. When the heroic crew saved the ship from sinking, it stopped Johnson's plan to join Israel in the war and thereby saved the world from certain nuclear conflagration. It also prevented his strategy of entering what he felt would be a "popular war" (unlike his other one in Vietnam) in order to give him a better chance to be reelected president the following year. When that failed to materialize, so did his reelection campaign; ten months later he was forced to announce his decision to not re-run for the office that he had always considered his destiny.https://amzn.to/4n9s0zkBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
