As the title to this episode indicates, we'll be talking a lot about sports fandom with Dr. Mike Devlin, an assistant professor of Advertising in the School of Journalism and Communication at Texas State University. He holds a PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Alabama, and an MA in Mass Communication and BA in Electronic Media Communications from Texas Tech University. Prior to earning his PhD, Mike worked as media designer and multimedia specialist in Austin, Texas. He currently teaches Advertising Copywriting and Layout at Texas State University. Dr. Devlin's interests lie at intersection of advertising, sport communication, and media effects - focusing on how fan identification impacts sponsorships, endorsements, branding, and advertising campaigns. Previous work included the integration of psychophysiology to further understand a fan's cognitive capacity during sporting events. He is the author of over 10 peer-reviewed publications, 40 national and international conference proceedings, and several book chapters examining the intersection between sports communication and advertising. His research has been published in Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Communication and Sport, International Journal of Sport Management & Marketing, Journal of Sports Media, and International Journal of Sport Communication. But let's go back to that fandom piece--we talk all about it in a research and real-world context, and talk about the role the media play in increasing (or decreasing) our fandom and helping us even become SuperFans. We have so much fun in today's conversation, and as a spoiler alert, Dr. Mike Devlin is going to the bookend for Season 3 as we already had an amazing conversation with his fabulous wife, Dr. Natalie Brown Devlin during Episode 1. Can you imagine how smart and sports fan crazy their twins are? To follow Mike on Twitter: @DrMikeDevlin To follow us on Twitter: @ICIRAlabama

I'm sorry. I thought if we got everyone together, and we all brought our hopes, dreams, and fears, and boiled them into some awful cauldron, that we could create something beautiful and wonderful. Friends living, and laughing, and loving, and reminiscing on all the fun times we had this season. Tyrod Taylor's first six quarters, the fake-fake punt, David Culley's in game management, the haunted cover two defense, James Campen doing his best Mike Devlin impression, Jonathan Greenard jumping to the third best defender on a front seven, and, well, I don't know, other things. It was dour. It's our curse. We are sickos, and these are the things the sick and disturbed and discuss. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, Matt Weston, L4Blitzer, Rivers McCown, Uprooted Texan, TIM, and Matt Robinson (Houston Houdini), review the Texans at the halfway point. Topics include: the Texans dead cap space, future Texans head coaches, future Texans quarterbacks, possible draft strategy, drinking the pickle juice, Steve Slaton in the ring of honor, David Culley's future, Nick Caserio feelings, and of course, your beautiful and perfect listener questions. So a few weeks ago we did an episode about the state of music journalism in Canada + I talked to Mike Devlin who is an arts reporter for the Victoria Times-Colonist. And this week's episode is sort of a Music Journalism in Canada Part 2 episode, where we take a look at music journalism in the digital age + explore the online side of things since we mostly discussed music journalism at traditional media outlets on Mike's episode. And joining me this week is Sajae Elder who is a Toronto-based culture writer + content creator for The Fader, Complex, Vice, Buzzfeed + many others. Sajae + I discuss what music journalism looks like in the online space in 2021, whether music journalism is still relevant, and what it's like to be a Black woman working as a culture journalist in Canada. When I started working as a publicist in the music industry, my job was a lot different that it is now. When I started, there were fewer outlets to pitch for coverage because music blogs were barely a thing AND there were local music writers at nearly every print newspaper across Canada. Which is crazy to think about now, but that's how it was.  And out of all of those journalists that I used to call up on the phone, there are not very many that are still working in the industry in the same capacity. Some are out of the business completely, some have started their own online publications, and a very limited few are still in the exact same place.  And one of those people is my guest on the show this week - Mike Devlin!  Mike is an arts reporter at the Times Colonist in Victoria, BC. That's where he was when I started in the biz, and that's where he remains to this day. Mike and I discuss the State of Music Journalism in 2021 - how much things have changed, and what the future looks like for music criticism.  FRESH CONTENT LINKS Mike recommends: Nick Cave's new album Carnage Jen recommends: Renegades: Born in the USA podcast SOTW Leeroy Stagger - Strange Attractor You can find Mike at timescolonist.comAnd learn more about Fritz Media at fritzmedia.ca

It almost never happened. In the early hours on a Sunday in late 2011, Victoria Police poured into Sugar Nightclub to crash the party. The officers had no idea that in a tiny room in the back of the club, one of the biggest superstars on the planet was getting ready to take the stage. Mike Devlin, the arts reporter for the Times Colonist, was lucky enough to be in the club that night. This is the story of Prince's legendary afterparty and why some believe it's the greatest night in Victoria music history.

Some of the most promising startups happen when their founders discover how to disrupt an industry. They see opportunities to radically change or improve “business as usual.” That is what Mike Devlin and his cofounders are doing with LureBoats, an online marketplace that enables customers to book boat charters across the country right from their computer or mobile device—it’s like an OpenTable or Airbnb for fishing charters. Mike is cofounder and CBO of LureBoats. He graduated in 2014 from the University of South Carolina, Darla Moore School of Business. Prior to LureBoats, he worked for a boutique consultancy in Boston specializing in working with medical device startups. Mike's passion for the outdoors and creating user friendly services drove him to start LureBoats and seek to disrupt the charter boat industry. Learn how Mike and his team are navigating the sometimes murky and deep waters of the fishing charter industry to make it easier for customers to find and book their trips. They are also expanding to serve people who want to book other types of boat charters such as sunset cruises, dinner tours, sightseeing tours and party barges.

Episode #20: We start the story of Mike Devlin FTMBA 2019 from a humble background with an Indian tiger mom and an American father. Mike initially walks us through his background in investment banking, private equity, and his passion for tackling our health and healthcare using his unique background and set of skills. Then we learn how Mike was forged from a kiln at the peak of Mount Everest… just kidding. I initially heard about Mike running across the country in 90 days from his fellow classmates. I was just as curious as you are to what drives an individual to run across the country for a great cause, such as for ALS, and the kind of physical and, more importantly, mental fortitude required to tackle such an endeavor. Haasies are known to have tackled great feats in one form or another and Mike’s story is one that reminds us that it only takes the ordinary (just a man, a will, a brother, and a van) to achieve the extraordinary. Moreover, the journey of a thousand miles (or almost three thousand) begins with one step (in front of the other)… and Confucius forgot to mention, a LOT of mindless pop music.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations
