MONEY FM 89.3 - The Breakfast Huddle with Elliott Danker, Manisha Tank and Finance Presenter Ryan Huang

Former US President Jimmy Carter is currently lying in state in the US Capitol Rotunda in Washington. The Georgia Democrat and 39th president died 29th December at the age of 100. Carter served as president from 1977-81, winning office as an outsider in the wake of the Vietnam War and Watergate. An official state funeral will be held for the late President in Washington, DC on 9th January, with President Joe Biden set to deliver a eulogy for Carter, whom he had called a “beloved friend”. Tributes have poured in from presidents, world leaders and many everyday people from around the world, who admired not only Carter’s four-year service in the White House but his four decades of efforts since leaving office to fight disease, broker peace and provide for the poor. On this episode of Morning Shot, Amber Roessner, Professor from the School of Journalism & Electronic Media at University of Tennessee, who had previously interviewed Jimmy Carter and wrote a book about him, and Charles S Bullock III, Richard B. Russell Chair in Political Science & Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor & University Professor of Public and International Affairs at University of Georgia share their perspectives. Summary This week Anna (https://x.com/AnnaRRose) and Nico (https://x.com/nico_mnbl) chat with Arnaud Schenk (https://x.com/_arnauds_), one of the original co-founders of Aztec (https://aztec.network/) and creator of the Polaris Fellowship (https://www.polaris-fellowship.com/). They discuss Arnaud's recent blog post ‘On Trust Infrastructure', exploring the down sides of a trustless system, the need to make online community building more possible and how programmable cryptography may play a role in these solutions. They explore the history of computer culture, the rejection of institutions by mid-90s internet culture and how the seeds for this were set by the 60s counterculture. Men used to go to war. Today they are keyboard militias, defending the sanctity of video games and the Gamer™ identity from hysterical women and their evil feminine wiles. ... If you didn't know about Gamergate before today, we're jealous. In this episode, Hannah and Maia provide an excruciatingly detailed breakdown of the 2014 mass harassment campaign which led to the abuse, threatening, and doxxing of countless figures in the game development, journalism, and academic industries. Was there really a feminist conspiracy against video games? Was it just a bunch of men feeling threatened by the fact that, surprise, games are fun for everyone? Or was it just faceless trolls throwing stink bombs all over social media? The status of Black Women? Living with misogynoir as a pre-existing condition. To be considered innocent is to be viewed as vulnerable to harm and worthy of protection from harm. An innocent person's pain is recognized, acknowledged, and addressed. Mediated Misogynoir: Erasing Black Women's and Girls' Innocence in the Public Imagination interrogates contemporary media culture to illuminate the ways the intersections of anti-blackness and misogyny, i.e., misogynoir, converge to obscure public perceptions of Black women and girls as people with any claim to innocence. When pained images of Black female bodies appear on media devices, the socio-political responses are telling, not only in their lack of urgency, but also in their inability to be read empathetically. By examining viral videos, memes, and recent film and television, Kalima Young makes a striking case for the need to create a new Black feminist media studies framework broad enough to hold the complexity and agency of Black women and girls in a digital age invested in framing them as inherently adulterated and impure.About Dr. Young:Dr. Kalima Young is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Media and Film where she teaches Principles of Film and Media Production and African American Cinema. She received her PhD in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park. "How do we create a better free speech culture? How do students learn things like the first amendment in school and in their peer groups? What if at sports events before we sing the National Anthem we recite the first amendment?" First amendment specialist Stuart Brotman joins the podcast, new book in hand. The book, called The First Amendment Lives On: Conversations Commemorating Hugh M. Hefner's Legacy of Enduring Free Speech and Free Press Values, is a series of interviews between Brotman and some of the leading free speech figures of the past half century. From Geoffrey R. Stone to Floyd Abrams to Nadine Strossen and others, Brotman paints a picture of some of the free speech pioneers of recent history. What is the state of free speech today? What is the difference between free speech in a legal sense and a culture of free speech? What are universities doing -- or not doing -- to protect that which we hold sacred? And what does the future hold, as we look to exercise the freedoms of the first amendment in new and robust ways? If you like what we do, please support the show. By making a one-time or recurring donation, you will contribute to us being able to present the highest quality substantive, long-form interviews with the world's most compelling people. Stuart N.
