Checkpoint has discovered Te Whatu Ora has spent more than 130 million dollars remediating payroll problems and that doesn't include the cost of repaying wages. It all stems from issues related to the Holiday's Act that were identified in 2016, when it was discovered former District Health Boards were not paying staff correctly, including doctors, nurses and health care assistances. Dr Mike Shepherd, Health New Zealand's Acting Deputy Chief Executive Northern Region spoke to Lisa Owen.

Te Whatu Ora's defending its equity adjuster-waitlist tool. Ethnicity is a factor in new medical waitlist criteria rolled out in Auckland in February — alongside clinical priority, time already spent on the waitlist, location, and deprivation level. Te Whatu Ora's Dr Mike Shepherd told Mike Hosking that clinical prioritisation always takes precedent. The system's being rolled out to other northern region areas. Cornwall's popular and highly acclaimed theatre company Kneehigh shut down in 2021, the year after its 40th anniversary. Auckland Hospital was so busy on Monday that it had to divert ambulances to other hospitals. It had to open an overflow zone in a public area, normally reserved for possible mass casualty events, like an earthquake. Te Whatu Ora Auckland interim director Dr Mike Shepherd spoke to Corin Dann.
Peter Knight, from Auckland, took his wife to Auckland City Hospital on Monday because she had severe abdominal pains. Staff were coping admirably, he said, but the department was clearly understaffed and overworked. One nurse said the ED was at 195 per cent capacity. St John workers were looking after patients in the corridors, he said. “It was like a war zone and it was Monday afternoon in the off-season,” he said. Te Whatu Ora interim lead for Te Toka Tumai Auckland, Dr Mike Shepherd, said that the ED had been particularly busy on Sunday and this had a flow-on effect on Monday in terms of capacity. Numbers had since settled, he said. Peter Knight joined Kerre Woodham Mornings. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Meanwhile, a video filmed inside baby W's Starship hospital room last night shows exactly how things unfolded... It's a distressing situation for all involved, at one point there's at least eight people in the room including a family support person, police officers, medical staff, another infant believed to be W's sibling and an unknown person taking the footage. In a statement released in the last half hour, Te Whatu Ora says it has stepped up security at Auckland Hospital. Dr Mike Shepherd says it's been a difficult time for the staff and from time to time it's necessary to trespass individuals. He confirmed an individual was trespassed from the hospital earlier this week.

When they first met at a suburban Junior High just outside of Nashville some thirty years ago, Mike Shepherd was the rule-following new kid with a stash of X-Men comics under his chair and Jereme Frey was the black and white checkered Skidz-overalls wearing local with a stash of X-Men comics under his chair. They sat next to each other in band, and for the most part, followed the rules. Then they heard that damn Nirvana record, scooched their trombone and tenor sax over just a little to make room for a bass guitar and a drum kit, and Schtucket was born. A few short months later, Mike (Bass, Vocals), Jereme (Drums, Vocals), and their other bestie, Ryan Shogren (Guitar, Vocals), recorded a demo on a boombox / karaoke dual cassette tape machine to take down to Lucy's to see if maybe, just maybe, they could get a show. Spoiler alert: they did. On the regular. Thirty years later, "Nashville's happy-go-lucky musical tricksters” are members of Tower Defense, and they're still cranking out their unique version of loud, high-powered punk, making records, and playing live shows to packed houses. Jereme Frey and Mike Shepherd have played rock music together for nearly 30 years, beginning with "Nashville's happy-go-lucky trio of musical tricksters," Schtucket. Schtucket was together from 1993-1998, and their run included ten appearances at Lucy's Record Shop between 1994 and 1997. Following Schtucket's dissolution, they went on to play together in The Shakedown Cruise, Shiboleth, Gentleman Divers, Partytown Hospital, and early-aughts loud-rock legends Apollo Up! For the last ten years, they've collaborated in Tower Defense, alongside Mike's wife Sarah Shepherd on bass and Currey May on guitar. In The City, the latest LP from Tower Defense, was released in 2020 on Nashville's YK Records. Auckland Hospital is now only allowing patient visits on compassionate grounds and all visits must be pre-arranged and approved. The move comes after nurses took legal action against the district health board over concern for the safety of staff. Auckland DHB provider services director Dr Mike Shepherd said the visitor policy has been tightened because the controls that were in place weren't working. He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
On this episode I chatted with Mike Shepherd of Shepherd Oil in Blackwell Oklahoma. "Shepherd Oil Company was founded in 1949 by Robert F. Shepherd, starting with a service station in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Mr. Shepherd built the business into a bulk wholesale jobbership with Champlin Refining and continued operating a state of the art service station thru the mid 1960's. He later purchased a Phillips 66 bulk jobbership, expanding into wholesale deliveries to the oilfields, agricultural, and industrial markets in northern Oklahoma. In 1974 a son, Mike Shepherd, purchased stock in the company and became a partner in the business. Shepherd oil evolved into the self-serve and convenience store business in the late seventies. They continued growing the marketership through a network of dealerships. In 2001, Mike's son Brindan entered the business and currently heads up all C-store operations. Brindan is actively pursuing new growth by expanding the retail footprint of the business. In 2007 Zack Zimmerman, Mike's son-in-law, entered the business and currently heads up all wholesale operations. Zack brings into the business new opportunities to ensure future growth of the wholesale and common carrier business. Shepherd Oil was and still is based on the simple philosophy of its founder, “treat someone like you would want to be treated.” We are proud to serve the central United States with petroleum products and services. We are one of the oldest marketerships in the state of Oklahoma. Through a relationship with its customers of trust and integrity, Shepherd Oil Company is set to serve its customers, employees and family for generations to come." www.shepherdoil.com Huge shout out to our sponsors for their contained support. Cornwall’s Kneehigh theatre company was due to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to postpone any celebrations. After five months of lockdown, the company has released a strategy document, Strike Out!, focussing on its plans for creating art and performance in a post-pandemic world. Just after its release, BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to Kneehigh founder and co-Artistic Director Mike Shepherd about what he has been up to during lockdown, the company’s deferred 40th anniversary plans and plans for the immediate future. To read the Strike Out! strategy document and other information about the company and its past and future work, see Kneehigh's web site or follow @wearekneehigh on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Kneehigh Theatre Company from Cornwall is currently working on a brand new adaptation of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera titled Dead Dog in a Suitcase, with a script by regular Kneehigh writer Carl Grose and music by Charles Hazlewood, directed by Kneehigh founder Mike Shepherd.
