The theatre director Emma Rice is renowned for her bold stagings of much-loved films and books including Brief Encounter, Wuthering Heights and the Red Shoes. For twenty years she worked as an actor, director, and eventually artistic director of Kneehigh, an international touring company based in Cornwall, known for its energetic productions with an inventive use of music and puppetry. In 2016, Emma became artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe, the reconstructed Elizabethan theatre on the south bank of the Thames - although her tenure there ended after two years following disagreements with the board. She has since founded her own touring theatre company, Wise Children, whose recent productions include The Buddha of Suburbia and Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest. Emma's musical passions include Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Mozart and Bach.

Knee-high by the Fourth of July. That's a phrase we're familiar with in Wisconsin when it comes to measuring the success of the corn crop. But in this drought, "knee-high" might not come by Independence Day. UW-Extension corn agronomist Joe Lauer says the success of the pollination period will determine what your options are as a corn grower. And water is critical for successful pollination. He gives us a crop outlook.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cornwall's popular and highly acclaimed theatre company Kneehigh shut down in 2021, the year after its 40th anniversary. When the company closed, the Kneehigh Cookbook, an online educational resource, also closed, but it has become the basis for an ongoing archive of all of the company's work, This is Kneehigh, hosted by Falmouth University and supported by digital arts platform The Space. BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to Kneehigh founder Mike Shepherd and lead archivist for the project Sarah Jane from Falmouth University about the archive, the process of archiving live performance, the closure of the company and Mike's ongoing creative work at The Barns, the former home of Kneehigh in Cornwall which he continues to run as a creative arts facility. Contact details can be found on the This is Kneehigh web site—Sarah welcomes any feedback on the site.
The Knee-High man took me back to school when I first heard the word Pygmy. I am not sure if I heard it in a good way, or did someone use it as an insult. You see, I didn't grow up beyond 5 feet. But that didn't stop me from winning a beauty pageant at 18! This story from the African-American tradition of stories has travelled with the people across the seas. I can see this story as a striving for basic human dignity, a stature that gives strength, leadership, dominance and perhaps respect. It's a story about needs, wants and all that we want to be without knowing why!Listen to this one, told with a little tact and sensitivity, this one can open up conversations that are difficult to have. Listen to it & tell me what do you think!*****
Colorado based actor Michael Ridley sits down with Kevin on this episode of Cinematic Heartland: A Filmmaking Podcast. Filmmaker Marissa Vonn sits down with us on this episode of Cinematic Heartland: A Filmmaking Podcast. Marissa is currently living in Los Angeles, but she is an Iowa native and quite frequently returns to the state to work on her films. Mike and I have heard so many great things about Marissa, but this is the first time that we have had the opportunity to sit down and chat about filmmaking with her and we had an absolute blast. She tells us about her feature film Knee High, working with Deft Productions, why she comes back to Iowa to film, what makes an authentic character in a story, and how she turned her passion into a career. What tips does she have for filmmakers trying to get their project done on a low or no budget?
Marcus is hype about the addition of Jamaree Salyer to the Chargers starting line up this week and sure enough the Chargers got the win. But J.P says hold up not so fast you all palyed the Texans. DOes the it matter whether or not it was a division rival to prove it was a solid win? Find out on this episode of Plugged Into the Chargers on Knee High to the Tree High
It is finally that time of the year. Fire up the grills get the hotdogs and chicken Wings on deck. This was an inspiring episode that I'm so happy to be sharing! Dan is a movement director with a wealth of experience in the industry as a filmmaker and especially as a movement director. He has worked with Sally Cookson on A Monster Calls (Bristol and London Old Vic) and Jane Eyre (Bristol Old Vic and National Theatre). As well as, Kneehigh, Punchdrunk, DV8, and Fabulous Beast companies. He also has his own theatre company Still House, links to his and the company's work is below. Dan takes me through his inspirations to be involved in movement, working together with others, and how to overcome bad days in rehearsal when ideas don't flow as much as they did before. We especially talk about his involvement in A Monster Calls, previously discussed on here with Stu Goodwin, and how he worked with the score, the company and his own instincts from the book and director to create simply a spellbinding piece of theatre. Hope you enjoy, feels so good to back podcasting again after a while! GSA had to come first, forgive me! Big Mark and P have been side by side fighting D-Lines for a long time and making people laugh while doing it. This is where it all began and where the seed was planted for what turned out to be "The Knee High to the Tree High."

Hmmmm... how best to describe Welsh actress Bettrys Jones? Known for her work at Shakespeare's Globe, the National Theatre, the Young Vic and Kneehigh to name but a few with productions of Wise Children, Hamlet, The Little Match Girl,The Tin Drum, Life of Galileo, We Want You to Watch, Edward II and War Horse, the TV series Skins and too many radio dramas to mention.Funny, bright, witty, thoughtful, cheeky, mischievous, sensitive, intelligent and strong, she's highly talented, and one might say proudly Welsh. One of the things I've wanted to do with this platform is give a voice to people in industries that have been devastated by Covid, because no matter how much many of us are struggling mentally with the impact of the pandemic, there are a great many people who have lost their way of life, none more so than the acting community. And yet, Bettrys seems resolutely cheerful. But then - I've never heard her moan about anything. Give it a listen. The benefit of going to film festivals is discovering so many talented filmmakers. The benefit of having a podcast is that you get to talk to them. That's exactly how it came together for today's guest to appear on Cinematic Heartland. Kevin was introduced to Cinematographer / Filmmaker Bruce James Bales through his work in Knee High which he saw at an area film festival and was completely blown away. In this conversation, you will quickly realize that Bruce's outlook on life, the business, and his willingness to help other filmmakers climb the ladder is as outstanding as the work he creates. Bruce provides his insight into working on set, what he has on his slate, as well as his advice to up-and-coming cinematographers and filmmakers in general.
Cornwall’s Kneehigh theatre company was due to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to postpone any celebrations. After five months of lockdown, the company has released a strategy document, Strike Out!, focussing on its plans for creating art and performance in a post-pandemic world. Just after its release, BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to Kneehigh founder and co-Artistic Director Mike Shepherd about what he has been up to during lockdown, the company’s deferred 40th anniversary plans and plans for the immediate future. To read the Strike Out! strategy document and other information about the company and its past and future work, see Kneehigh's web site or follow @wearekneehigh on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Emma Rice, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. Emma Rice is the Artistic Director of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London and director/co-adaptor of “946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips,” a Kneehigh production running at Berkeley Rep through January 15th. For several years, Emma served as Artistic Director of Kneehigh, where she was also director of several shows that came through Berkeley Rep, including “Tristan and Yseult,” “The Wild Bride,” and “Brief Encounter.” Her work is known internationally for its unconventional story-telling and staging. “The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips,” based on a popular children's book by Michael Murpurgo, who joined with Emma in co-adapting his story, tells of a girl named Lily in 1944 and her search for her missing cat in an English village overrun with American soldiers preparing for the D-Day invasion. “946” refers to a tragic event that actually happened in the seas off Slapton and was excised from history for fifty years. The play features original songs and music, and puppetry, and dancing. A slightly shorter version of the interview is heard on KPFA's Arts-Waves program on December 19th. This interview was recorded on-site at Berkeley Repertory Theater in Berkeley. The post Emma Rice: 946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips at Berkeley Rep appeared first on KPFA.

Kneehigh Theatre Company from Cornwall is currently working on a brand new adaptation of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera titled Dead Dog in a Suitcase, with a script by regular Kneehigh writer Carl Grose and music by Charles Hazlewood, directed by Kneehigh founder Mike Shepherd. Charles Hazlewood spoke to us from Sweden where he was conducting a concert of music from video games with the Malmö SymfoniOrkester. He talks about his involvement in the project from taking it to Mike Shepherd as an idea around three years ago through his process of creating the score in rehearsals with the performers and scriptwriter-lyricist Carl Grose. Mike Shepherd, speaking to us at the end of the first week of rehearsals at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, where the show opens in June, speaks about the evolving story and politics of the show and the influences of modern events and modern popular culture, as well as the process of bringing it to the stage. Mike also explains how Kneehigh has developed and constantly changed direction since he founded it in 1980, and talks about some current Kneehigh projects including Kneehigh Rambles and the company's mobile theatre space the Asylum. Dead Dog in a Suitcase runs at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool from 21 June to 12 July 2014, and then will be performed in Kneehigh’s mobile theatre, the Asylum, at The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall from 30 August to 28 September. Charles Hazlewood’s Orchestival summer festival, with which Kneehigh is also involved, is on 19 and 20 July in Somerset. (Rehearsal images of Mike Shepherd and Charles Hazlewood by Steve Tanner.)
