Through his scholarship and creative practice, Howard is an ambassador for the power of play as a transformative and transcendent practice.[ Falmouth University Website]In this interview, Jeff shares his background as a “technomage” and talks about his understanding of ludomancy and the history of the concept. With regard to classic role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, he discusses the effects that the moral panic known as the ‘Satanic Panic' had on gaming and game developers, not only during the ‘peak' years but also in later years. Jeff also talks about ‘magical' or ‘occult' games that have been inspired by various forms of media, including the sci-fi/fantasy/horror genre, as well as how the motivations and attitudes of players have changed over the years. On an historical level, Jeff gives some examples of games that are based on occult groups/traditions. He also talks about how he approaches his own game design with occult practices as a starting point, and gives some examples of games that people could look into, should they be interested. Lastly, Jeff expands on his concept of ‘playful occulture' as the basis for an upcoming monograph, and shares a bit about an article he co-wrote for RENSEP, titled "To Reveal the Hidden Kingdom of Eld: Andrew Chumbley, the Cultus Sabbati, and Imaginal Space in Cornwall” that can be found on the RENSEP website for members. For the latest episode we are honoured to share a recent talk at Falmouth University's School of Film & Television by Rod Stoneman titled 'Amongst Artistic Forms of Thought'. Rod's talk discussed different and often radical uses of film form to move the art form and audience thinking into different, not literal, not factual, non information-driven places. To illustrate his talk he drew on a number of filmic examples including two different engagements with Hitchcock's work. To close the talk Rod discussed the work of his late friend Malcolm Le Grice, who had a deep association with the UK South West, as does Rod, and shared some examples of Malcolm's work to illustrate how radical, experimental and artistic (and prolific) he was, right up until his death late 2024. Here is a list of clips used, with links to more information and where possible, links to see the works -  The Phoenix Tapes (1999) dir. Matthias Muller, Christoph Girardet. Malcolm Le Grice Elsewhere in the episode Dario and Neil discuss the role and place of radical forms of cinema in film culture and reflect on Rod's talk and his thinking around different ways of engaging as audiences and filmmakers with thought, form and subjectivities.    Rod Stoneman is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Galway. He was the Director of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media from 2003-15 and Chief Executive of Bord Scannán na hÉireann / the Irish Film Board from 1993-2003. A career in science communication wasn't exactly what our guest, Jasmine Corbett, expected when she grew up, but now she is the Media and Communications Manager at the Manta Trust living out her dream to help share their work with the world.  In this episode of the Beyond Jaws podcast, co-hosts Andrew Lewin and Dave Ebert interview Jasmine Corbett, the Media and Communications Manager for the Manta Trust. Jasmine shares her unique journey into the field of science communication, highlighting her passion for underwater photography and marine biology. Jasmine grew up in a creative family, initially envisioning a career in traditional photography. However, after discovering scuba diving during a gap year in Thailand, she shifted her focus to marine and natural history photography. She pursued a degree in Marine and Natural History Photography at Falmouth University, where she learned to combine her artistic skills with a passion for marine conservation. Her career began with various roles in marine conservation, including working as a dive instructor and managing marine conservation projects in the Maldives. During her time in Baa Atoll, she had a transformative experience witnessing manta rays, which deepened her commitment to their conservation. Jasmine's connection with the Manta Trust began while working as a marine biologist for Reefscapers, where she collaborated with the Manta Trust on research projects. Her photography and videography skills caught the attention of the Manta Trust's founder, leading to her current role in media and communications. In this position, she is responsible for creating compelling visual content that raises awareness about manta ray conservation and engages the public. Throughout the episode, Jasmine emphasizes the importance of visual media in science communication, noting that it can transcend language and academic barriers. She discusses the challenges of conveying complex scientific information in an accessible way, particularly when addressing serious issues like the threats faced by manta rays. Jasmine's approach involves crafting narratives that include a beginning, middle, and end, focusing on the context, challenges, and solutions to inspire action and hope among audiences. Overall, Jasmine's career exemplifies the integration of creative passions with scientific communication, showcasing how visual storytelling can effectively promote conservation efforts and engage diverse audiences. We welcome to the show Professor Neil Fox of Falmouth University. He's written a terrific book called “Music Films: Documentaries, Concert Films and Other Cinematic Representations of Popular Music”. He felt that music films were poorly regarded in the wider space of cinematic genres.....which is stupid. As our show has proven, the wider umbrella of music cinema can include discussion of class divides, social structure, civil rights, the cult of celebrity, mental health, and knocking down Stonehenge. Neil's book puts specific films under the microscope and links them thematically.....many made in the 21st Century. He shows that the wider umbrella of music cinema has much to say....regardless of whether you want something deep or something fluffy. It should be celebrated as much as anything out there. You may think you know a thing or two about music films, but Neil's book reveals so many interesting films that deserve a wider audience. You don't even need to be a fan of the music some of these films celebrate.....just an interest in stories well told....and that, dear friends, is what drives this very podcast. Catherine speaks to Faye Twinn about her late autistic discovery. Faye discovered she was autistic in her late 30's and this discovery changed her entire outlook on life itself. She spent her teens in Devon and it was there within her secondary school that she was identified as ‘dyslexic'. Struggling to fit in, she quickly self identified as arty and found that within the creative subjects she could strive. She went on to study Fine Art at Falmouth University. Later retaking her English and Maths GCSE's, gaining a PGCE in arts education and completing a Masters in costume at Central Saint Martins, London. She feels that she scrabbled through her late teens and 20's and worked in various settings to get by. Eventually settling into lecturing art and fashion. She spent 15 years as a Lecturer before resigning during the pandemic. These days Faye can be found working as a studio potter in Essex. She is married, has a 8 year old son and 2 step children in their 20's. The work that she produces now, came from needing to step back and an understanding that some of us need to live slower for our well-being. She creates eco conscious functional pottery and strives to provide simple pieces that can be used to create little moments of loveliness. Having a knock-out creative career five decades long is one thing. Setting up a charity to inspire the same creativity in the next generations is another. But the iconic British design duo, who are also husband and wife - Sir John Sorrell CBE and Lady Frances Sorrell CBE - have done just that. Frances and John started their lives in design both aged of 14 when, in different parts of London, they attended free Saturday morning classes at their local colleges of art and design. Neither were from well-off families. John had never been to an art gallery and most of his peers were dropping out of school aged 15 to get jobs. The experience was a revelation that paved the way for full-time study and their careers in design. It was also the prime motivation for the formation of the Sorrell Foundation in 1999 with the aim of inspiring creativity in young people to change their lives and make the world a better place. After meeting through work, the Sorrell's launched their now legendary design studio, Newell and Sorrell, in 1976. They've redesigned some of the UKs most high-profile organisations, including British Airways, The BBC and the Royal Mail. After 25 years in business, they sold to Omnicom, and have spent the past 25 working to give young people pathways to higher education in the creative industries. Their achievements and accolades are too long to list. John is co-founder and chairman of London Design Festival and co-founder of London Design Biennale and is a UK Business Ambassador, appointed by successive prime ministers to help promote Britain's creative industries abroad. John was appointed CBE in 1996, was awarded the Royal Society of Arts Bicentenary Medal in 1998 and holds numerous honorary fellowships and degrees. John was awarded a knighthood in the 2008 New Year Honours List for services to the creative industries. Frances is a tour de force in her own right. She is Chancellor of the University of Westminster, London, has Honorary Fellowships from the Royal Institute of British Architects, Falmouth University, Hereford College of Arts and Plymouth College of Art. She holds Honorary Doctorates from the Open University, Coventry University and University for the Creative Arts, and has been a visiting Professor at University of the Arts London. As Creative Director at Newell and Sorrell she won over a hundred awards for creativity and effectiveness. Listen in as Vince, Sir John and Lady Frances Sorrell discuss; cold calling BP fresh out of art school and designing their exhibition stand at the Paris Air Show six weeks later, growing up on the same working-class council estate as Rod Stewart, and why you have to put your money where your mouth is if you really believe in something. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our own Prof. Neil Fox in his day job is director of Falmouth University's Sound/Cinema Lab, which is behind films such as Mark Jenkin's Enys Men (2022) and Chris Morris' A Year in a Field (2022) as well as Wilderness (2017), which Neil wrote and produced. Wilderness was also made with a student crew and was proof of concept for making a feature drama within the structure of a university course. With Dario delivering a module to second-year students called Professional Life Practice, designed to help students research and understand the creative industries and learn from working experiences, Neil very generously agreed to answer a range of questions on subjects including his ethos of film pedagogy, how students should use extra-curricula events to shape their careers, the process of developing Wilderness, how students were recruited and what roles they took, understanding a professional mindset, and how the students' experiences on the film shaped their career pathways. Neil is on top form in this talk which is why we have decided to put it out as a bonus episode. It's a hugely valuable insight for film lecturers in practice and screenwriting, and definitely for students in all areas of the creative industries. What's the episode about? In this episode, hear Angeline Morrison at the 2023 Falmouth University Haunted Landscapes conference on voicing Black British ancestors through music, folk music and death, W. E. B. Du Bois and sorrow songs, unregistered lives, the stories of Frances Elizabeth Johnson and Caesar, a formerly enslaved African buried in Hartlepool, as well as pet loss. Plus, highlights from the Haunted Landscapes conference. Who is Angeline?  Angeline Morrison is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who explores traditional song with a deep love, respect and curiosity. Angeline mostly makes music in the genres of wyrd folk and psych folk, her work infused with elements of soul music, literature, ‘60s beat pop sounds, folklore, myth and the supernatural. With a feral approach, a handmade sonic aesthetic and a belief in the importance of tenderness, Angeline's original compositions and re-stitchings of traditional songs focus on storytelling and the small things that often go unnoticed. Sounds like solitude, memory, nostalgia, a rainy walk amongst trees... In July 2022, Angeline was announced as the fourth winner of the prestigious Christian Raphael Prize at Cambridge Folk Festival, which generously supports the development of emerging talent in the folk genre. In December 2022 The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience was voted No 1 Folk album of the year in The Guardian.  Her album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience (released October 2022, Topic Records) is a work of re-storying. The historic Black presence in the UK dates back to at least Roman times, yet is often hidden, forgotten or unacknowledged. The populations of enslaved African people and their descendants in the USA have their bodies of folk song, which are vitally important for containing histories, expressing feelings, giving voice and claiming presence… but the Black ancestors of the UK have no equivalent body of song. The Sorrow Songs begins to address this. It is a gift to the forgotten Black ancestors of these islands, and to the folk community here today. The album uses history and imagination to tell stories of UK Black ancestors in the sonic style of UK traditional and folk music. What is the Haunted Landscapes conference? We're back for season 18 and we're kicking off with an in-depth look at new feature documentary A Year in a Field, a quiet film by Christopher Morris that is currently on tour around UK cinemas, distributed by Anti-Worlds. Produced by Bosena (Enys Men) in partnership with Stone Club and Falmouth University's Sound/Image Cinema Lab, the film tells the story of Chris's relationship with a 4,000 year old menhir (standing stone) in West Penwith, Kernow, and the slow burn political awakening around the climate crisis that spending time with the stone brought out of the filmmaker. Ahead of the theatrical release Chris and Denzil joined Neil for an on-stage conversation at Falmouth venue, The Poly (a place that should be familiar to Cinematologists listeners) following a preview screening of the film for incoming school of film & television students at Falmouth University. Around the live conversation, Neil and Dario discuss the upcoming season of podcast highlights and regards A Year in a Field, discuss the potential for a political cinema and individualist versus collective responses to structural inequalities and the climate crisis. Yep, it's a political one, right out the gate.
