There was a time in history when the entire world's coffee supply came from Yemen. But the industry went through a major decline, so that by 2013, when Yemeni-American Mokhtar Alkhanshali became obsessed with coffee, coffee from Yemen was hard to come across. Mokhtar spent three years in Yemen learning everything he could and started the company Port of Mokha to help revitalize the industry. These days, Yemeni coffee is coveted by connoisseurs, who pay top dollar for it. Mokhtar's life and journey was immortalized in the Dave Eggers book The Monk of Mokha. As civil war erupted in Yemen, Mokhtar Alkhanshali found himself imprisoned, with $5,000 stuffed in his underwear and his coffee samples confiscated. To get those samples to the biggest specialty coffee expo in North America, he'd have to survive more than one near-death experience. Mokhtar Alkhanshali was a doorman in San Francisco when he saw a statue that changed his life. The statue was of an Arab man holding a cup of coffee, and it led Mokhtar to learn about the origins of coffee, in Yemen, where his family is from. While coffee's roots in Yemen run deep, Mokhtar learned that present-day Yemeni coffee was hard to source, and the quality was inconsistent. But when it was good, some experts said it was the best they had ever tasted. Mokhtar saw an opportunity to start his own coffee company, and help Yemeni farmers in the process. Mokhtar Alkhanshali likes to say that the shortest distance between two people is a cup of coffee. Mokhtar is the man Dave Eggers wrote his non-fiction novel  'The Monk of Mokha' about. He was a young American in San Francisco with Yeminite roots, looking for a way to get his life on the rails. A few years back he decided to start importing coffee from Yemen, improving the local farmer's lives at the same time. In 2015 Mokhtar ends up in a civil war but he persists. After an amazing adventure he makes it back to the US to present his coffee to the public. Today, ‘Port of Mokha’ coffee is recognised as among the best in the world. Mokhtar came to share his story with for the first time in Belgium with entrepreneurs at the occasion of De Bertjes 2018. He brought us a true story of being an entrepreneur with impact.

Mokhtar Alkhanshali is a historian, community organizer, and coffee innovator, who envisions a world where industry empowers rather than exploits, uplifts rather than represses. Following his studies, he worked with some of the most respected civil rights and community organizations, including the ACLU and Asian Law Caucus. On several occasions, he's been requested to partner with the city of San Francisco in working on initiatives regarding civil liberties. In 2013, Mokhtar shifted his focus toward his family's roots as coffee farmers in Yemen. Seeking to reverse Yemen's nearly lost art of coffee cultivation, he founded Port of Mokha. Combining his knowledge of specialty coffee production, progressive infrastructure strategy, and community organizing, Mokhtar has helped to reverse the declining quality of Yemeni coffee and re-establish it as one of the industry's most treasured origins. Mokhtar is the subject of bestselling author Dave Eggers' new book, The Monk of Mokha. Mokhtar was in the Northwest to speak at The Elliott Bay Book Company.

Dave Eggers is the author of What Is the What, The Circle, the National Book Award-nominated A Hologram for the King, and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated memoir of death and adoption. He is also founder of the independent publishing company McSweeney's, its eponymous magazine, the periodical The Believer, and the nonprofits Voice of Witness, 826 National, and ScholarMatch. The titular ''monk'' of Eggers's latest book, Mokhtar Alkhanshali is the San Francisco-raised son of Yemeni immigrants. A coffee fanatic and cultivator, he returned to his native land in 2015 to learn more about its historical connection to coffee just as civil war was brewing. Despite those challenges, his company’s first batch earned rave reviews, and sold for $16 a cup at one of the fanciest coffee chains around. But can he turn that early success into a profitable business, or will the challenges of trying to achieve perfection using a supply chain that starts halfway around the world do his young company in?
