It was June 15 1993, three days after the June 12 election and the National Electoral Commission had released results from 14 states, including the Federal Capital Territory. From the results, MKO Abiola was in the clear lead. It seemed like MKO had won the election. All around Nigeria, people were hopeful and eager for a democratic future with a leader they had chosen.  But on June 16, the Abuja High Court called for the suspension of the remaining results. Shock rippled through Nigeria. To many Nigerians, the election had been fair and unproblematic, so the suspension immediately raised some red flags. Protests took over the streets. Lawyers got busy preparing to contest the suspension. Then on the 23rd of June, just eleven days after the election that had inspired so much hope, Nigerians had their fears materialize when IBB announced he was annulling the election. Until then, he had been perhaps the most popular of IBB's private-sector associates.  MKO's legacy in Nigeria is a complex one: it is a tapestry of luck, hope, discipline, betrayal and destiny but underneath that tapestry lies a number of questions. On becoming president, IBB sold himself as the military leader who would usher in Nigeria's democracy; but what continues to puzzle historians is why he repeatedly delayed the democratic transition until 1993. It was great to receive so many responses to our podcast Episode 434 from last week on Total Bases Per Plate Appearance.  We wanted to go further with it and apparently listeners want that too. So we've created another new stat -  Bases created per plate appearance. This stat includes BB, IBB, HBP and net Stolen Bases for each player and each team.  This season's Atlanta Braves reign supreme with this stat as well as the more productive hitting team in MLB history! I usually don't first-person these, since it's Roger and Andrew's podcast and I just like to do some notes in the space here… but also, today's note is especially for the 8-year-old in my house, whose reaction to the Mets winning last night on DJ Stewart getting hit by a pitch was, “has that ever happened before?”“A walkoff hit by pitch?” I replied. “Yeah, it happens sometimes.”“That exact situation?”“It's got to be the bases loaded, so, yes?”“The Mets against the Rangers?”“Well, I doubt that. They haven't played each other too much.”Indeed, the Mets' previous three wins on a walkoff HBP came against the Marlins in the 2021 home opener (Michael Conforto by Anthony Bass), the A's in 2011 (Justin Turner by Brad Ziegler), and the Cardinals on April 23, 1992 (Daryl Boston by Juan Agosto).Wait just a minute. Daryl Boston hit by Juan Agosto? That was part of Monday's note, because the runner who scored was Rodney McCray, a pinch-runner.Conforto is the only batter of the four who was hit in the ninth inning, so McNeil is the first Manfred Man to score a game-winning run on an HBP in Mets history (the others were both in 13th innings, pre-baseball shootout rule). McNeil hit the home run that tied the game against the Marlins two years ago, and pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme singled and eventually scored when Conforto leaned over the plate for the win. Lucas Duda singled and came around on the Turner plunking, so the Mets have had all manner of baserunners bring home wins this way.All four of these Mets rallies do share in common an intentional walk, and the one that Joe Torre and the Cardinals gave to Charlie O'Brien did show that little bit of strategy that came into play before the automatic free pass: Juan Agosto throwing pitchouts to Tom Pagnozzi, rather than Pagnozzi doing the old stand-and-shuffle move. Tim McCarver went so far as to describe it as an “unintentional intentional walk,” but the official scorer gave it a full IBB. After all, there wasn't an attempt to throw a strike on ball four, it was purposely outside.The Mets are now 4-4 in games with a walkoff HBP, and haven't lost a game this way since 2014, when Jeurys Familia drilled Hank Conger with the bases loaded in the 11th inning in Anaheim — one of three walkoff HBPs in the majors that year, a record set in 1972, and tied in 1997, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2021. It's the first time it happened this year, and it's now happened at least once each of the last five seasons since a failure to get this shrimp varietal in 2018.Jonny Gomes is the only batter to be hit by two pitches to end games: August 21, 2011 in Washington, by Phillies closer Brad Lidge; and April 11, 2012, in Oakland, by Jonathan Broxton of Kansas City. Only one pitcher has walked off twice after hitting a batter: Randy Moffitt with the Giants in 1972 (Joe Pepitone at Wrigley Field) and 1978 (Bill Russell at Dodger Stadium). Das Kapital wird vorrangig für die Entwicklung und Markteinführung innovativer Produkte oder Dienstleistungen sowie für Geschäftskonzepte in der Kreativwirtschaft eingesetzt. Neben den beiden VC-Fonds für Technologie- und Kreativunternehmen, wurde im Jahr 2022 ein Impact Fonds aufgebracht. Die VC-Fonds werden aus Mitteln der Investitionsbank Berlin und des Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung finanziert. IBB Ventures hat mit mehr als 275 Millionen Euro bereits in über 260 Berliner Unternehmen investiert. Momentan ist der Kapitalgeber an über 90 Unternehmen beteiligt. Dazu zählen u.a. Babbel, Blinkist und Selfapy. Zu den letzten Exits gehören u.a. Thermondo, Sofatutor und Smart Steel Technologies. Trotz des Fokus auf Startups in Berlin zählt IBB Ventures laut Startupdetector regelmäßig zu den 10 aktivsten Investoren in Deutschland.Nun hat IBB Ventures die fünfte Fondsgeneration angekündigt. Mit 90 Millionen Euro wird die Fortführung der bestehenden Fonds für Technologie und Kreativwirtschaft gesichert und der neue Impact Fonds erhält 30 Millionen Euro. Die neue Fondsgeneration wird neben den Mitteln des Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung überwiegend aus Rückflüssen und Erträgen aus Exits der vorhergehenden Fondsgenerationen gespeist. Zudem sind zahlreiche Founder, bei denen IBB Ventures den erfolgreichen Exit ihres Startups begleitet hat, inzwischen selbst als Business Angels aktiv. Die Investitionsphase der neuen Fondsgeneration läuft bis zum Ende des Jahres 2029.
