The Moka coffee pot is an Italian design classic that is still used not just in Italy, but many kitchens in Ireland, despite the proliferation of espresso, capsule and filter machines over the past number of years. Episode Notes I love a good cup of coffee, but if I'm being honest, I never really gave much thought to where my coffee came from or the history of this delicious beverage itself. That was until I learned about Cxffeeblack, a Memphis-owned coffee company, and its associated Anti-Gentrification Coffee Club. Founded in 2019, by husband and wife team, Bartholomew Jones and Renata Henderson, Cxffeeblack is a community-oriented, multi-disciplinary, education-based coffee company that's centered around reclaiming coffee's Black roots. Coffee originates in Ethiopia, but because of trade and colonialism, there are now coffees that we've come to associate with various parts of the world, like Moka from Yemen or Java from the Indonesian island of Java. Although each of those countries or regions have their own coffee histories, we lose something when we only know history in part. We become disconnected from ourselves and one another. Today I'm excited to share a very special episode of the Cxffeeblack podcast where host Bartholomew Jones sat down with Martin Mayorga of Mayorga Coffee & Sahra Nguyen of Nguyen Coffee Supply to discuss how they honor their roots through their coffee enterprises. A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Brett Deal. I love to walk dirt paths. Maybe because it feels like home. It feels good to walk the way we know so well. Once a year when I was a kid my family would leave our little coastal home on the second floor of the church in Malabo and go to Moka (pictured below), a little village high up the island's small mountain range. At 4500 feet above sea level, I could feel my thin blood freezing in my veins! Surely the temperate 50 and 60 degree days weren't sooo cold, but my tropical soul could hardly take it! Our family would pack up our warmest clothes and drive up the mountain to a little apartment with no electricity or running water. We would bring lots of D batteries for the cassette player and wood to keep us warm. At night we'd sit and sing by the fire, heavy layered. But during the days, I would venture out into the hills and fields, and walk the muddy trails between towering cane and rolling leafy greens. The movement kept me warm in my fleece jacket as my mind envisioned stories about myself, a Central African Tom Sawyer hot on the trail of adventure. There are times to follow Robert Frost on the path less taken, and then there are times that the well-known road before us is the way to go. In 1 John 5.1-12 the beloved disciple shows us the characteristics of a Christian. He points out the path before us of genuine faith for the followers of Jesus. John invites as we come near the end of our pilgrimage to walk the well-traveled path.

Moka Best. Super cool name to go with someone who has been the best in many athletic events. Moka accomplished many goals in sports and actually reached a level of professionalism in the world of triathlon and became an Olympic hopeful for the United States. But, a deadly disease fell upon Moka called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) where the blood doesn't circulate properly and connective tissues fail. Leaving muscles, tendons, and organs all at risk of failing to work or return to a natural shape and function, bringing on overall system failure. Moka has suffered major surgeries that repostured organs and systems, kidney autotransplant, Gallbladder removal, etc etc. Now, fighting for normal, days are filled with pain. Moka smiles through it all most of the time finding life is worth fighting for and her family is worth staying alive for. Listen in on Moka's story of survival and goals for her life.
