Made in italy: la moka - Spendieren Sie einen Cafè (1€)? Dopo essere salita attraverso il tubo, l'acqua con la liscivia torna giù e si distribuisce uniformemente sullabiancheria da lavare....The full transcript of this Episode is available via "Luisa's learn Italian Premium", Premium is no subscription and does not incur any recurring fees. This week, I'm thrilled to share a few of my reflections and takeaways after reviewing my top episodes of all time after 3 years of podcasting. This will be our 168th episode. The primary goal of this podcast episode is to connect with my audience. What have you liked over the past 3 years? What haven't you liked? And indeed what would you like to see more of? The primary categories we've covered in this time are: Social ImpactSustainability, Regeneration and CircularityHealth & WellnessGenerally, there have been 2 formats to the show. The first is the primary format -- interviews. The second is solocasts -- which are journalistic deep dives in to a particular topic, book or issue. The third is a screen shared commentary with a few different guests in a panel format (though these are rare). And we've also shared bonus episodes, where I have guested on other shows, primarily in the health & wellness space that I call my professional home. Our top podcast after 3 years of podcasting are: Tied for 1st: Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation with Paul Hawken https://caremorebebetter.com/regeneration-ending-the-climate-crisis-in-one-generation-with-paul-hawken-5-time-best-selling-author-and-environmentalistTied for 1st: Scary Smart: Scary Smart: How Artificial Intelligence Will Change Our World with Mo Gawdat, Bestselling Authorhttps://caremorebebetter.com/scary-smart-how-artificial-intelligence-will-change-our-world-with-mo-gawdat-bestselling-author 2nd: Indulge In A More Responsible Coffee with Mokhtar Alkhanshali, CEO of Port of Mokha, Producers of World-Renowned Coffee from Yemenhttps://caremorebebetter.com/indulge-in-a-more-responsible-coffee-with-mokhtar-alkhanshali-ceo-of-port-of-mokha-producers-of-world-renowned-coffee-from-yemen3rd: Eat To Beat Disease: Reimagining Our Healthcare Systems With William W. Li, MDhttps://caremorebebetter.com/eat-to-beat-disease-reimagining-our-healthcare-systems-with-william-w-li-mdSo where do we head from here? Questions: What do you want to see more of? Interviews? Solocasts and deep dives by yours truly? Both? Something else?Do you want to continue to hear about health and wellness topics? Other topics? Is there something you feel this podcast is lacking that would make it better? It could be news updates, or a second episode each week. While I'm not able to promise these things right now, if I hear from you that they're important enough, I may be able to move mountains and make it happen. Who do you want to hear from on this show? YOU CAN RECOMMEND GUESTS -- AND EVEN ASK TO COME ON YOURSELF! What's the worse that could happen? I could say no -- but we could also become friends IRL the way Beth Craig and I have. There was a time in history when the entire world's coffee supply came from Yemen. But the industry went through a major decline, so that by 2013, when Yemeni-American Mokhtar Alkhanshali became obsessed with coffee, coffee from Yemen was hard to come across. Mokhtar spent three years in Yemen learning everything he could and started the company Port of Mokha to help revitalize the industry. These days, Yemeni coffee is coveted by connoisseurs, who pay top dollar for it. Mokhtar's life and journey was immortalized in the Dave Eggers book The Monk of Mokha. He talks to AR about this journey, which continues ten years on. Dave Eggers is a writer who does not want to be put in a box. His writing often defies easy cataloging or genre classification and he doesn't like to be specific about who his readers should be. His latest, THE EYES AND THE IMPOSSIBLE could be loosely described as an animal fable, but it isn't exactly that. And it could be described as a book that is good for younger readers, but it isn't exactly that either. Here is what we ARE certain of: It's wonderful, funny, engaging, original and full of joy! Eggers' words, his writing and his characters will stay with you long after you close the book. We also talk to his illustrator for EYES, the very talented and prolific Shawn Harris, whose inspirations and technique might surprise you.The Eyes and The Impossible by Dave Eggers A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers, illustrated by Shawn Harris What Can a Citizen Do? He describes a different way— the A Rocha way, which involves working with vulnerable places and communities, committing to deeper relationships, and learning that contentment is one of the fruits of wisdom. Gustavo also introduces the A Rocha Conservation Certificate and explains how this pioneering program will expand conservation opportunities beyond just science and conservation professionals, to make conservation more accessible for people in all professions and walks of life.  Click here to learn more about A Rocha's Conservation Certificate.Gustavo H. Phil, Jake and Jason are reunited with bud-of-the-pod Dave Hause to rank pickles and Sir Topham Hatt (from Thomas & Friends) on the List of Every Damn Thing. Plus coffee gets re-ranked!Follow Dave on Instagram (@davehause), Twitter (@hausedave) and Facebook (DaveHauseMusic). We love his critically-acclaimed new album Blood Harmony, and so will you (it's on Spotify & Apple Music). Hopefully you can see him play live near you!If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Here's Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift being “infinitely more punk rock” than him. Jason and Jake praise the song “Gary” from Dave's new record, because it's an incredible song. We note that our last episode featured Dave's brother Tim Hause. The two brothers collaborated on Blood Harmony, as well as on Tim Hause's recently-recorded album (coming out later this year). We successfully deduce that sauerkraut is both a pickled and fermented food (the same goes for kimchi). Here's a Southern Living article about how Texans– and only Texans– eat pickles at the movie theater. We discuss different types of pickles, such as cornichons and bread-and-butter pickles (the latter of which apparently got their name because they were good for bartering for staple food items). Here's Hannibal Buress' pickle juice bit wherein he confesses "I have a surplus of pickle juice in my apartment". We talk about Dave being a transplant from Philadelphia. Did you know that the city's name literally means "Brother Love" in Greek? Why doesn't this get mentioned more? Guy Fieri is the prime minister of Sonoma County, where Phil lives. Phil says that all businesses in the county have a picture of Fieri on the wall, and he eats and drinks for free by law. Jason uses “onion murder” as an argument for ranking pickles higher than onions. Research shows that a guy in India was once killed for onions, but it's not fair to blame the onions for this. Maybe the guy who died in a tragic accident while harvesting onions could be blamed on the onions. Phil ponders on the nature of Thomas' sentience, and whether his consciousness is a gestalt of the train itself and the humans that operate it. Jake compares it to Voltron. Sir Tophamm Hatt is originally from The Railway Series books by Wilbert & Christopher Awdry, but our frame of reference is mostly the Thomas & Friends TV show (featuring, of course, the titular star Thomas the Tank Engine). Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Patrick Stewart and Brian Cox are our nominees for portraying a live-action Topham Hatt. We shout-out some of our favorite coffee companies: Time & Tide Coffee (Biddeford, ME), Timeless Coffee (Oakland, CA) and Black Oak Coffee (Ukiah, CA). We also give praise to the Blue Danube Coffee House on Clement Street in San Francisco. Come on a journey to discover the roots of coffee in the war-torn region of Yemen with Mokhtar Alkhanshali, CEO and Founder of Port of Mokha. You'll learn how and why Mokhtar was compelled to create a socially responsible coffee company that paid growers three times the rate of open market coffees, so farmers in this oldest region of coffee growing in the world could thrive while producing internationally acknowledged, award-winning coffees of the highest quality. The resounding message you'll hear is one of conscious consumerism, voting with your dollars, paying value for the food you put on your table, and understanding its roots. About Our Guest: Mokhtar Akhanshali, CEO and Founder of Port of Mokha Historian, community organizer, and coffee innovator, Mokhtar Alkhanshali envisions a world where industry empowers rather than exploits, uplifts rather than represses. Seeking to reverse Yemen's nearly lost art of coffee cultivation, he founded Port of Mokha. Combining his knowledge of specialty coffee production, progressive infrastructure strategy and community organizing, Mokhtar has helped to reverse the declining quality of Yemeni coffee and re-establish it as the one of industries most treasured origins. Best-selling author Dave Eggers' forthcoming title “The Monk of Mokha” traces Mokhtar's journey as a social entrepreneur and his harrowing escape from war torn Yemen with his first coffee samples. Mokhtar can be found amongst his coffee farmers in remote villages or speaking around the world on topics of social entrepreneurship, community development and, of course, coffee.   Guest Sites: Website: https://portofmokha.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alkhanshali/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/portofmokha/  Monk of Mokha Book by Dave Eggars: https://daveeggers.net/monkofmokha    Join the Care More. There have been plenty of stops in between though. I’m a first generation immigrant, twice over. I’ve been a citizen of three different countries and lived in nine cities. I am, as Goethe, said, “nothing but a wanderer […] on this earth.” Living among different people, in different countries at fascinating times in their histories, has shaped both my view of the world and my writing. Ultimately, human beings are the same everywhere (despite the fact that they tell themselves, everywhere, that they are different from each other), and the theme of this fundamental human unity informs everything I write. As to my life outside of writing, I went to the William and Mary School of Law, and before that attended the University of Toronto, where I studied English Literature. I am currently practicing as an attorney and must “measure out my life in coffee spoons” on a daily basis. Some members of my family will tell you that I’m also a poet. This isn’t true. I wrote a few poems in Urdu when I was a teenager, and I’ve never heard the end of it…which I wouldn’t mind, honestly, if they were any good. As it is, I’m very happy living in prose, thank you very much. Other interests include good food, video games, sitcoms, and books of all kinds. Most of my time that doesn’t go to writing or billable hours is consumed by my two children, four and two years of age.

Journey with us into the history of coffee and the realities of social enterprise with our guide Mokhtar Alkanshali, founder of Port of Mokha. A Yemeni-American, Mokhtar shares the extraordinary path that led him to build a vertically integrated coffee company in Yemen in the midst of political turmoil and civil war. Mokhtar takes on the skeptics asking why we should care about specialty coffee: by shortening the distance between consumers and producers they are improving the quality of coffee and the lives of farmers. We’re digging into the rapid growth of speciality coffee—22% a year growth compared to 5% a year for regular coffee— and why farming in Yemen matters globally. Mokhtar argues shifting from treating coffee simply as a commodity, to coffee as an accessible luxury like cheese and wine, brings consumers pleasure and helps farmers live with dignity. Mokhtar shares how he developed buy-in from Yemeni farmers to build a business based on social impact right alongside superior taste. This is a candid dialogue about the benefits and challenges of a vertically integrated company, and the expansion of Port of Mohka’s direct trade model into Ethiopia and Colombia.Mokhtar talks about the journey of entrepreneurship: the “adventure” and “passion” phases, how to navigate mistakes, and personal investment. Mokhtar dives into the critical issue of how to find the right investors. We are talking supply chain difficulties, the challenges in fundraising, and innovating into new product lines to diversify the business, and the bright opportunity Mokhtar sees for e-commerce. Mokhtar’s story is the subject of Dave Eggers’ book The Monk of Mohka, and he more than lives up to the interest in his blended vision for business and social impact.

What’s in a Label? In this edition of the MOAS Podcast we’re looking at labels and linguistics in Migration. We’re going to explore how the labels given to people on the move have positive and negative impacts on their future. We’ll also see how those labels are shaped for political reasons as well as convenience and the consequences that come with that. To do this we’re going to speak with Professor Heaven Crawley about her new research into migration categories and the politics behind them. We’ll also be speaking to two contrasting campaigns focused on labels. One says let’s get rid of them and focus on the people, the other says let’s keep the label and let the people given it decide what it means to them. Then we’ll be going back to Erfurt Germany to hear from Tarek Esmail and see how he feels about this. You’re also going to hear our first in a series of Things You Didn’t Know. It’s about the countries that people MOAS has rescued have come from. First up is Yemen. If you like this Podcast don’t forget to click subscribe on Audioboom for more updates from us.
