Episode 168 - This conversation between Father Sean Danda and Nathanael Rea explores the practice of Lectio Divina, a method of divine reading that emphasizes the transformative power of scripture. The discussion highlights the importance of engaging with scripture through a four-step process: reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation. Our hosts emphasize that this practice not only deepens one's understanding of the Bible but also fosters a closer relationship with God, ultimately leading to personal transformation and spiritual growth.Takeaways: Lectio Divina is a method of divine reading that transforms us.Good stories, like scripture, should be embodied.Scripture is the greatest story ever told. The monastic tradition emphasizes the importance of scripture.Meditation helps us digest and understand scripture deeply.Christian meditation focuses on Christ and His teachings.Contemplation is about resting in God's presence. The goal of Lectio Divina is union with God.Every experience can be brought to God for reflection.Keep Christ at the center of scripture interpretation.

"Keep Christ in Christmas!" It makes a good bumper sticker. Bumper stickers, wall hangings and slogans aren't long enough to let us fully explain an idea. At best they're provokers of thought. At worst they're preventers of thought - simplistic and misleading. So which is, "Keep Christ in Christmas?" Will we let it slide on by our consciousness, or will we use it to think more deeply? Christmas is six weeks away, and some folks may already be feeling the stress. The holidays should be a time of spiritual reflection and reconnection with family and friends…but too often, we lose sight of that in the quest for perfection. Crystal Paine is here to help us stay focused on the actual “reason for the season.”Crystal Paine is the founder of MoneySavingMom.com and the author of The Time-Saving Mom: How to Juggle a Lot, Enjoy Your Life, and Accomplish What Matters Most.1. Start with a Christmas BudgetOne of the best ways to enjoy a stress-free holiday is by setting up a Christmas budget. A budget is like a set of guardrails—it keeps you on track, preventing you from overspending or going into debt. Here's a simple way to create one:Determine Your Total Spending Limit: Decide how much you can comfortably spend this season.List Your Recipients: Write down everyone you're buying for and assign a spending amount for each.Track Your Spending: Use a spreadsheet or the FaithFi app to keep a running total of your spending.By creating a budget, you'll know exactly what you have left to spend without sacrificing your financial well-being for the New Year.2. Plan Your Holiday ShoppingIf you tend to overspend during holiday sales, using cash-only or prepaid gift cards is a great way to ensure you stick to your budget. Here are some extra tips:Shop with Gift Cards: Consider using Amazon or store-specific gift cards to control spending.Use Deal Sites: Websites like MoneySavingMom.com and RetailMeNot.com offer deals and coupons.Best Shopping Times: Black Friday week and the following two weeks are generally the best time to find the deals you're looking for. With some planning, you can keep your shopping affordable and enjoyable.3. Keep Holiday Cooking ManageableHoliday cooking can be a joy, but it can also become a significant source of stress. It's advised that you embrace shortcuts where possible:Use Pre-Made Ingredients: Don't feel guilty about using store-bought cookie dough or other pre-made items. Sometimes, it's just as affordable as homemade. One Baking Night: Consider dedicating one evening to bake as a family. Let each person choose one recipe and enjoy the process together without the burden of constant baking all month. These small changes can bring balance to your holiday kitchen, making it a time of joy rather than stress.4. Share the Hosting ResponsibilitiesIf you're hosting family or friends, don't be afraid to ask guests to contribute. Include a note in your invitation encouraging each family to bring a dish. Not only does this lighten your load, but it also makes the event more collaborative and enjoyable for everyone.5. Make a Family “December Bucket List”To bring your family closer during the holiday season, consider creating a “December Bucket List.” Here's an example: Each Family Member Chooses an Activity: Whether it's a movie night, baking cookies, or a trip to see Christmas lights, everyone gets a say.Add It to the Calendar: Schedule these events to create special memories without feeling overwhelmed. This approach ensures everyone has a voice and the season feels special without overloading your calendar.6. Keep Christ the Center of ChristmasAbove all, remember the reason for the season. Using an Advent calendar or devotional is an excellent way to keep the focus on Christ for you and your family. Unwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas by Ann Voskamp is a fantastic advent devotional if you're looking for a resource for your family to go through this Christmas season. Each day includes a devotional and an ornament symbolizing the story of Christ. This daily ritual not only reminds everyone why we celebrate but also keeps the true spirit of Christmas in the heart of your home.As we approach Christmas, let's aim to make it a season of joy and reflection rather than stress. With a budget, some planning, and a focus on Christ, we can enjoy a holiday that brings peace, love, and lasting memories. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My son and daughter-in-law have adopted four Ukrainian children who are now teenagers and looking for college scholarships. I remember someone previously calling your program and mentioning a resource for finding scholarships that have yet to be widely applied, but I didn't write down the details. Do you have any recommendations for where we can find those types of lesser-known scholarship opportunities?I was told about a Morgan Stanley mutual fund investment that supposedly pays $12,000 per year. It sounds too good to be true. What is your opinion on this, and are there any similar low-risk investments you would recommend?I applied for Social Security benefits after my divorce, but the process has been frustrating. The Social Security office didn't provide all the information I needed up front, and now I'm facing delays getting the required marriage certificate from New York. I would like to know if I can use an old pay stub with my Social Security information to resolve this before they remove me from the system. What do you suggest I do?I'm faithfully paying off a credit card debt of around $8,000 that I took on after the death of my mother. I'm currently paying $320 per month. My wife is willing to help me pay this off once she finishes paying off her own credit card. Should I stay the course with the $320 monthly payments or look into rolling over the debt and opening a new credit card with a balance transfer option?Resources Mentioned:MoneySavingMom.comUnwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas by Ann VoskampFastWeb.com | Peterson's Scholarship Search | Scholarships.comChristian Credit CounselorsLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. The Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost. Our nation faces deep political and social divides. The Rev. Peter Walsh explores how fear has become a powerful, divisive force in our culture, fueled by the media and politics, and urges us to instead embody a "culture of love" rooted in Jesus' teachings. We are called to reject fear and embrace grace, unity, and humility as citizens of God's Kingdom. This message is a powerful reminder to ground ourselves in faith, prayer, and compassion amid a fractured world.

Join us as we tackle this provocative question head-on, challenging the stigma that has, unfortunately, overshadowed the beauty and essence of faith. Reflecting on personal experiences and inspiring Bible verses, we delve into how true religion should guide our lives, focusing on caring for those in need, as highlighted in James 1:27. This isn't about empty rituals but about rediscovering the purity of religious practice that nurtures a genuine connection with God.Our conversation then shifts to the intricate relationship between religion and Christianity, confronting the misconception that religion is merely a set of outdated practices. We passionately argue that being religious is not just a label—it's a commitment to fulfilling spiritual duties through prayer, service, and dedication to God's teachings. Through the metaphor of knitting, we explore the idea of building a robust spiritual community, where believers support one another in staying true to their faith amidst modern distractions and challenges. Finally, we explore the transformative journey of Paul, who transitioned from a persecutor of Christians to a devoted apostle. This transformation underscores the significance of choosing true religion over mere cultural traditions. Through an exploration of Romans 10:19 and Moses' prophecies, we reveal the powerful role of Gentile believers in stirring spiritual growth among the Jewish community, all while celebrating the unifying grace that God extends to believers of all backgrounds. The timeless question of who truly belongs to the family of God takes center stage as we explore Romans 9. Discover how Paul distinguishes between national and spiritual Israel, making the case that true spiritual lineage is rooted not in ethnic ties but in faith in Christ. Our journey through this theological landscape is enriched by poignant examples from the Old Testament, illustrating that salvation transcends any earthly affiliation. Embrace the radical notion that righteousness is accessible to all through faith, a message that crosses ethnic and historical barriers. In a world frequently divided by differences, we reflect on the shared spiritual journey that unites all believers. As we consider the endurance required to remain steadfast in faith, we find encouragement in the transformative power of life's trials. Our discussion touches on the current trend of distancing from Christianity, offering reassurance that God's ultimate plan remains unshaken. We celebrate the notion of the true Israel of God as an international spiritual community, inviting you to be inspired by the universal love that transcends borders and binds us as one family in Christ.Survive the holidays without going broke! Send us a Text Message - include your name! Eric and Andy tackle the challenging and ever-present reality of racism. They explore how it's woven into the fabric of society, highlighting the ways we contribute to it—sometimes intentionally, but often without even realizing it. The conversation doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable truths, as they dig into what it means to confront systemic injustice. They turn to the gospel, looking for guidance on how to speak truth to those in power while still holding to the grace and humility that Christ exemplifies. Throughout, they emphasize the need for self-reflection, repentance, and a commitment to justice that goes beyond words, seeking to live out the kind of radical love that the gospel demands. Keeping Christ at the center of Christmas is a huge challenge. Busy parents are constantly pushed and pulled a hundred different directions, especially at the holidays. Our event calendar in December can look like a flow-chart from an international airport with constant departures and arrivals. It is easy to forget Christ in the hustle and bustle of baking, shopping, wrapping, and party-hopping. How do we keep our families focused on Christ during the hectic holiday season? Bethany Kimsey, host of the Warrior Mama Podcast, joins Catherine again to discuss how to keep our hearts and our families concentrated on Christ during the Christmas season. These two moms have over 40 years of parenting experience, and in this episode, they share their favorite Christ-centered family traditions. These traditions are: *Don't compare yourself to other families. *Study the names of Jesus. *Celebrate Advent. *Watch Christ-centered entertainment. *Create a Jesse Tree. *Assign Scripture passages to each family member for Christmas. *Educate your kids and give to a Christ-centered mission. *Celebrate Jolaboklaflod (an evening of book-giving) with Christ-centered books. Employing some of these wonderful family traditions will help counteract the busyness, the commercialism and materialism, and the overall stress of Christmas. Bethany's bio: As a mother to 8 children, Bethany Kimsey has seen God radically change her messy motherhood from weary, anxious, and frantic to peaceful, joyful, and triumphant. She helps weary mothers win the battle against worry and fatigue as they understand their identity in Christ and rest in the hope of the Gospel in community with other moms. Bethany recently authored A Warrior Mama's Prayer Journal to help mothers pray intentionally over their children and anchor in gospel truths. This can be purchased at www.Bethanykimsey.co. Are you struggling with attitudes in your family? Maybe yours as mom. Maybe your kids. One reason the attitudes might not be good is your kids or you need encouragement in who you are...your identity in this world...where you gain value. When we don't have identity & value correct, it comes out in our words, our emotions, our impatience, our actions.
