This week I'm bringing you an incredible conversation with Sasha Hanway, a certified personal trainer, yoga teacher, breathwork and meditation coach, and holistic nutrition coach. As a former college athlete, Sasha has always loved movement, but it was a progressive strength approach combined with deep core work that truly transformed her body. She has built a program that blends mindfulness, strength, mobility and core work called Align. This is the exact workout plan I follow in the Ladder app I always talk about! In this episode, Sasha and I chat about why building muscle is critical for your mental health, the relationship between anxiety and exercise, how movement can be a tool for processing grief, the difference between the weight on the scale and your body composition, understanding protein intake requirements for optimal mental health, breaking free from restrictive mindsets, creating sustainable habits for long term success and developing a loving and trusting relationship with your body. Sasha also walks us through her Pyramid of Wellness, a framework I absolutely align with and it's exactly what I have been doing for years to maintain my anxiety free life. Your health journey isn't just a final result. It's an ongoing process. You are not the product of your health journey; your health journey is the product of you. When you learn how to fall in love with taking care of yourself, the benefits naturally follow. I hope this episode encourages you to reframe your approach to fitness, mental wellness, and self-love. Canadian Thanksgiving has come and gone, and with American Thanksgiving just around the corner, the holiday season is officially here! Christmas, New Year's—it's all coming up fast. Every year, I get tons of questions from clients about how to stay on track with eating and lifestyle habits over the holidays. These habits have been working so well to keep their anxiety far away, but the busyness and lack of routine during this season can make it hard to stick to what's been working. Should you taper off birth control gradually like you would with SSRIs? Why do so many symptoms appear after stopping the pill? Is going on the pill a good idea for managing mood and anxiety, as some doctors suggest? And if you've recently stopped a progesterone-only pill to return to a natural cycle, how can you support your body while it adjusts? Today's episode is special because I'm doing things a bit differently and bringing on a friend who played a huge role in my journey to break free from anxiety, panic disorder, depression, and medication. Kelsi and I met when our lives looked very different. We were working at a bar and partying into the early hours nearly every night. Then, on June 6, 2013, Kelsi got sober after a life-changing experience in rehab—a turning point that deeply impacted me. About a year later, I hit my own rock bottom, and watching Kelsi transform her life helped me see that there was a way out of the cycle I was stuck in. In this episode, I'm taking you back to that messy 2011-2014 chapter of my life, when my anxiety, depression, and panic were at their peak, and I was using substances to cope. We talk about the “butterfly effect,” how one person's journey can set off ripples in another's, and how Kelsi's path toward sobriety inspired my own journey toward mental health and recovery. Today, Kelsi is a wife, a stepmom, and a business owner who helps women grow their brands online. She openly shares her story about mental health and recovery, and her DMs are always open to anyone re-evaluating their relationship with alcohol. In this episode, I explain why high-intensity exercises like spinning aren't ideal if you have anxiety, especially if you're dealing with hormonal imbalances or adrenal issues. Instead, I break down how to adjust your workouts based on the four phases of your menstrual cycle. We cover which exercises are most beneficial in each phase, how to avoid over-exercising, and why strength training might be a better option for long-term mental health. In this week's episode of The Breaking Up With Anxiety® Podcast, I'm joined by Todd, Co-Founder of Komusō! Todd helped develop the Shift, a breathing necklace designed to help reduce stress in situations like commuting, work meetings, traveling, falling asleep, overthinking, and social anxiety. I personally have the Classic Shift necklace in gold, and I absolutely love it. It's inspired by 17th-century Japanese monks who used a flute to find stillness. Before Komusō, Todd knew very little about wellness and unknowingly suffered from high-functioning anxiety. Learning about the science of breath completely transformed his daily life, from how he wakes up, eats, and drives, to how he interacts with others and sleeps. Now, Todd is dedicated to educating the world about how better breathing can be a life-changing habit. In this episode, Todd and I chat about how we both struggled with "traditional" meditation due to anxiety and found alternative ways to incorporate breathwork into our daily routines. Todd introduces the concept of preventative vs. rescue breathing, which changed my approach to breathwork, and shares his realization that anxiety isn't a personality trait—you can retrain your brain! And so much more! I loved this conversation, and I hope it gives you some powerful insights into how breathwork can be an effective tool for kicking anxiety to the curb. Philippians 4:4-6 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything  In 2019, TWO out of THREE Americans said they were anxious or extremely anxious.  91% of high school and college students report consistent and significant levels of ANXIETY associated with stress. Anxiety isn't SIN, it is a SIGNAL. 1. It's time to PRAY. 2 Chronicles 20:3 NLT Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged the LORD for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting. 2 Chronicles 20:6,9 LORD, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you. ... 9 ‘If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.' “It has been found that 12 MINUTES of daily focused prayer over an 8-week period can change the brain to such an extent that it can be measured on a brain scan.” —Dr. Caroline Leaf Not only does prayer touch the HEART of God, but prayer changes the CHEMISTRY of your brain. merimnao: DWELLING or PONDERING on fearful or anxious thoughts 2 Chronicles 20:12 For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. I Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. If it's on your MIND, it's on His HEART. 2. It's time to PAUSE. 2 Chronicles 20:12-13 “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the LORD. Psalm 46:10 …Be still, and know that I am God. 2 Chronicles 20:15,17 Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's. 17 Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you. 3. It's time to PRAISE. 2 Chronicles 20:29-30 The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side. Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Dan Millman once said "you don't have to control your thoughts you just can't let your thoughts control you." So instead of the worlds view of offering self-helps or turning over a new leaf why don't we look at what scripture teaches about an anxious mind?

Eswaran, founder of the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation and meditation instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, emphasizes the power of slowing down the mind to reduce stress and tension. By practicing meditation and slowing our pace of life, we can cultivate resilience and make choices with clarity. Eswaran's book, "Words to Live By," provides daily guidance and inspiration, outlining his eight-point program that includes practices such as meditation, mantra repetition, and focused attention. The idea of having a mantra resonates deeply with me personally. I have found that listening to podcasts while driving and focusing on a chosen mantra helps me stay present and attentive. Eswaran's second point in his program is the repetition of a mantra, or what he refers to as a mantram. These powerful spiritual formulas can transform consciousness when silently repeated in the mind. Every religious tradition has its own mantras, such as the name of Jesus, Hail Mary, Blessed art thou, Allah, and Om Mani Padme Hum. It is important to choose a mantra that deeply appeals to us and to stick with it, as changing mantras may hinder the deep benefits they can provide. Repeating our chosen mantra silently throughout the day, during activities like walking, waiting, or doing chores, can help us stay relaxed and alert. The calming effect of the mantra can also alleviate negative emotions such as anger, fear, and worry. From my personal experience, I have been using the same mantra since the mid-90s and have found it to have a profound impact on my life. It pops up unexpectedly and grounds me in moments when I need it most. I highly recommend exploring Eknath Eswaran's teachings and reading his other books, including "The Unstruck Bell." A meditation anchor serves as a focal point that helps to maintain presence and prevent the mind from wandering. One of the most accessible and commonly used anchors is the breath. By directing our attention to the physical sensations associated with breathing, we can ground ourselves in the present moment. To begin, find a comfortable position and maybe close your eyes. Focus on the natural movement of your breath and take notice of where you feel it the most in your body. Engage in non-judgmental curiosity and let your focus settle on the breath without forcing or changing it. As you continue, remain aware of any thoughts that arise, but avoid reacting or becoming overwhelmed by them. Remember that thoughts are not hard evidence – they simply exist, and we have the power to choose how we respond to them. With consistent practice, the ability to detach from thoughts and feelings can be developed. By observing these mental phenomena without giving them too much meaning or influence, we can gradually shift our perspective and regain a sense of control. This detachment allows us to gain insight from our thoughts and feelings without being consumed by them. We recognize that our minds and hearts are not rigid, but instead are capable of change. By directing our attention back to the breath, which serves as our anchor, we remain rooted in the present moment. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
