The opening aviation sequence mirrors what many of us feel right now: moral fog, loud voices redefining truth, and the temptation to fly by emotion alone. So we center on the one doctrine that stabilizes everything, especially at Easter: the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We go far past a surface-level explanation and ask the hard questions straight out: Why was suffering required? Why couldn't God simply forgive? Why did Christ have to descend below all things? From the premortal council and the eternal necessity of agency, we trace the problem created by real choice: we inevitably sin, we violate eternal law, and justice demands consequences. If mercy could erase justice, the moral order of the universe would collapse and “God would cease to be God” in the sense that divine authority depends on perfect adherence to law. That's where the Savior's mediation becomes not symbolic but necessary. We walk through Gethsemane and the meaning of Christ voluntarily paying the price so justice is satisfied and mercy can operate.
