Project Relationship

Attachment theory has been all the rage recently, and hey, we get it - it's a super helpful tool that comes up a lot in our work! But we've also been noticing some common pitfalls that are easy to stumble into while exploring the world of attachment styles. Labels like anxious, avoidant, or disorganized can feel quite restrictive, especially when people start to assume them as an identity. Here's the thing: you are a whole, complex, multifaceted person, and every relationship you have is going to be a little (or a lot!) different when it comes to attachment. That's why, in this episode, we break down a fresh perspective on attachment, focusing on our tendencies instead of rigid labels. We discuss the importance of context and nuance within conversations about attachment, especially when it comes to non-monogamous relationships. Plus, we talk about why there's a real need for more research in this area – and nope, it's not just because I'm a total research nerd! Some kinds of jealousy can just feel totally overwhelming. They may even make you feel rage. Justice jealousy is definitely one of them. Justice jealousy—a term that was coined by Jessica Fern (one of our favorite authors and recurring PWF guest)—can happen when your partner wasn't able to provide something for you in the past, and then you witness them providing that same thing to one of their other partners. Ouch! The feelings that come up in these situations can be strong. So we're here to give you strong frameworks, ideas, and tools that can help you understand, unpack, and work towards finding a resolution. (Spoiler alert, resolution might not look like what you had in mind when justice jealousy is in the picture!) In this episode, we talk about: — Why it's important to know the difference between jealousy and envy — What underlying issues can fuel strong feelings of justice jealousy — Why it may be more helpful to focus on empathy and understanding instead of strict ideas of fairness — The complexities of relationship repair in situations of justice jealousy — Communication, forgiveness, healing, and the tools that can help you work through justice jealousy and its related issues Resources mentioned in this episode: Polysecure: Attachment, Trauma and Consensual Non-Monogamy by Jessica Fern Imago Dialogue: Episode 129 of Playing With Fire Are you ready to open your relationship happily? In this episode I interview Gurunam Atwal. Gurunam Kaur Atwal, also known as “Gaia" was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, where she grew up immersed in the rich traditions of yoga, Ayurveda, and kirtan from the Sikh lineage. These early experiences laid the foundation for her deep connection to music and its sacred power to heal, inspire, and unite. Her journey has been a fusion of ancient spiritual practices and modern creativity, blending her roots in Kundalini yoga, North Indian dance, and devotional singing with her passion for the transformative potential of electronic music. As a multidimensional artist and DJ, she explores music as a universal language, a pathway to self-expression, and a tool for collective healing. Her intention is to craft safe, expansive spaces where people can connect to their authentic selves, move energy, and co-create moments of presence and joy. Whether through live singing, spoken word, or eclectic soundscapes, she brings an experimental and intuitive approach to her sets, allowing the energy of the moment to guide the experience. Beyond music, she is passionate about fostering conversations around wellness, spirituality, and living in harmony with the earth. It's an honor to share this journey, weaving together traditions and innovations to inspire connection and transformation. Episode 128. I've never been more convinced of the power of creativity in creating amazing things in the world, in our bodies, and in our businesses. Today's episode is a solo episode where I dive into my thoughts on this based on my conversation last episode with Marlys Woods, LMFT. Check out that conversation here. Without further ado, let's dive in! What to Expect in this Episode I cover the following: How we, and I, have de-valued music and the arts as a form of healing in the past Why I think it's essential now more than ever that we re-connect with it as we explore innovative approaches to the many problems of the world Collective healing with music and missed opportunities with a life devoid of arts and music How connecting with creativity through music and dance has been incredibly healing to me in a very short time My reflections on the healing that occurred in simply discussing my emotional experience with a song with Marlys (Including discussion about the song I talked to Marlys about which can be found here) (includes an example of a protector part of me, and an exiled one who has held a burden) Using music and dance and other creative expression to connect with pre-verbal parts The importance of getting the emotion out of you, versus isolating in it The impact of creativity in creating sustainable businesses that work around your life (with Marlys Woods and Megan Gunnell as really fascinating examples of this) How you can be sure to hear if Marlys and I do a collaborative experiential event for therapists to experience the healing power of music (we are already brainstorming on this) And so much more! A belief in Faeries has existed for centuries and stretches all around the world. Early stories of faeries originate in medieval Western Europe and this is where we get the term "Fairy Tales." Stories of faeries traveled with the colonists to America and are still strong in Appalachian and Ozark lore. There are many theories as to what faeries may be and because of this, they take many forms in folklore. And while most people believe that faeries are not real, the belief in these creatures is very real. And there are tales that go beyond superstition and leave open the possibility that faeries may just exist. Join us as we explore the folklore about these fascinating beings and examine some of the tales that are told about them! Who is an American? And what does it mean to be one? Those are questions that Cristi Miles, co-founder of the Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble, thought about when she first heard a podcast about an iconic series of photographs published in the late 50s by Robert Frank. The collection is called “The Americans,” and little did she know that a few years later she would be exploring those themes and reimagining the photographs on stage using music and dance. The production, now playing at the historic Alberta House in N.E. Portland, takes its name from the Robert Frank collection. Miles co-directed the show and joins us to talk about how the ensemble went about exploring American identity in a performance that's as much a poem as a play.
