Send us a text"Dancing for the Devil—Episode 1 Part 1 - Die to Yourself" recounts the harrowing journey of the Wilking sisters, Melanie and Miranda, through their involvement with Shekinah Church, founded by Robert Shinn, and its associated group, 7M. The episode begins with the Wilking family's desperate attempt to reconnect with Miranda, who has been isolated from them since joining the church. Despite their efforts, including visits to the church gate and numerous calls, Miranda remains out of reach, even missing her grandfather's funeral under dubious claims of having COVID-19. This separation is indicative of the church's control over its members, compelling them to cut ties with their families.Miranda's entanglement with the church began after moving to Los Angeles post-high school and forming relationships with key members of the dance community, including James (B-Dash), who introduced her to Robert Shinn's circle. The narrative reveals how Melanie also got involved, initially invited to Shinn's house where she experienced unsettling religious practices and coercive tactics. Financial exploitation is highlighted, with members being subjected to steep fees and controlled bank accounts, leaving Miranda financially drained and dependent on the church. As the story unfolds, Melanie distances herself from the church after a series of controlling demands, while Miranda remains entrenched, further alienating her family. The church's manipulation becomes evident through practices such as signing non-disclosure agreements during services and enforcing strict separation of new members from long-term devotees. Former member Melanie Lee's experiences corroborate these accounts, revealing systemic control and abuse within the church over decades. The episode sheds light on the psychological and financial manipulation within Shekinah Church. Members are forced to surrender large portions of their income and subjected to public shaming for non-compliance. The church's control extends to personal relationships, with members reporting all thoughts and actions to a mentor, creating a pervasive atmosphere of surveillance and obedience. Financial records reveal that church leaders, particularly Shinn's wife Hannah, exploit members for labor and monetary gain, maintaining strict control over their finances.A turning point occurs when Melanie Lee recalls the sexual abuse scandal involving Robert Shinn, which initially led to a loss of church workers but eventually saw Shinn manipulating and retaining control over remaining members like Melanie and her sister Priscylla. This abuse and manipulation culminate in Priscylla's eventual escape, although she continues to struggle with the psychological aftermath. The episode underscores the enduring impact of Shinn's control, with former members grappling with the trauma and attempting to reclaim their lives. The episode concludes with a glimpse into the ongoing legal battle against Robert Shinn, initiated by Melanie and Priscylla. Their decision to sue is driven by a desire for justice and to expose the church's exploitation. The involvement of the dancers in the lawsuit highlights the shared experiences of manipulation and control, emphasizing the collective struggle against Shinn's oppressive regime. Despite the legal actions, key members like Miranda, James, and Nick remain loyal to 7M, illustrating the deep-rooted influence of the church on its followers.Support the showhttps://www.wewinewhenever.com/Support the showhttps://www.wewinewhenever.com/

In 2011, Simon Reynolds is one of the world's most prolific music journalists, came on KEEN ON to explain why the Internet has been bad for both musical artists and fans. Back then it took a brave man like Reynolds to argue against the supposedly cornucopian cultural potential of the Web 2 revolution. Today, in contrast, most mainstream cultural critics see the internet, and particularly the AI revolution, as a catastrophe for artists and fans. And yet Reynolds, often the cultural zigger when everyone else zags, has cheered up. In a new collection of essays, Futuromania, his first book in eight years, Reynolds is cautiously optimistic about electronic dreams, desiring machines, and tomorrow's AI revolution. AI isn't going to destroy culture, Reynolds reassures us. It might even lead to a new renaissance of creativity, akin to punk or even the glory years of Sixties popular music. Simon Reynolds is the author of Energy Flash: A Journey through Rave Music and Dance Culture, Blissed Out: The Raptures of Rock, The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellions and Rock and Roll (co-written with Joy Press), Rip it Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978 – 1984, and, most recently, Bring the Noise: Twenty Years of Hip Hop and Hip Rock.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. In this episode Jeremy and Tim are joined by writer, historian, and friend of the show Simon Reynolds to discuss British musical trends of the 1970s and his life as a music journalist. Simon is arguably the most important music critic writing today, having penned seminal books on post-punk, electronic dance music, feminist rock and much more. In this interview he mostly talks about his most recent book, ‘Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy, from the Seventies to the Twenty-First Century', sharing stories from his childhood interest in the decadent world of Glam. The three discuss how so many artists came to aestheticise a rejection of suburbia, the purply gauze of Top of the Pops, and thinking the Situationists were a band. They unpick how Punk is imagined and historicised versus how it was experienced, how Simon came to reappraise the 60s against a hostile critical culture, and consider the role of the music press historically and today. For patrons, our extended edition also includes a discussion around Simon's 2011 book ‘Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to its Own Past'. Tim, Jeremy and Simon recount the particular conjuncture from which the book arose, tease out its key theses, and apply those to contemporary music culture. Simon Reynolds is the author of ‘Blissed Out: The Raptures of Rock', ‘The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion and Rock 'N' Roll' with Joy Press, ‘Energy Flash: A Journey Through Rave Music and Dance Culture', ‘Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978–1984', ‘Bring The Noise: 20 Years of Writing About Hip Rock and Hip-Hop', ‘Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past' and ‘Shock and Awe: Glam Rock and Its Legacy, from the Seventies to the Twenty-First Century'. With no formal training, she discovered that she was really good at it. But she wasn't just good at moving her body. She made it accessible to other people. They are designed so new dancers can mess up, learn, challenge themselves and build up their self-esteem in dance to feel the joy of movement. It really boils down to having fun!Listen in to learn more about Lady Carter and CweensGuard.Connect with Ashey CarterWebsite: www.thecweensguard.comInstagram: @thecweensguardTwitter: @thecweensguardFacebook: @thecweensguardYoutube: @thecweensguardConnect with Sandy Webster   Facebook: Sandy Todd WebsterInstagram: sandytoddwebsterLinkedIn: Sandy Todd WebsterTwitter: @fitnesseditorEnjoying our content? On this episode Niall and Andrea we dig into one of the most influential dance albums of the '90s - Chemical Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole.one of the most influential dance albums of the '90s - Chemical Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole.Released in 1997, Dig Your Own Hole was the second album from Tow Rowlands and Ed Simons, an album that brought a UK number 1 with Setting Sun featuring Noel Gallagher on vocals, acclaim in the US that allowed them to build upon the success of 1995's debut Exit Planet Dust and become household touring names. The album, featuring the singles 'Setting Sun', 'Block Rockin' Beats', 'Elektrobank' and 'The Private Psychedelic Reel' were released the same year as Radiohead's OK Computer, The Prodigy's Fat Of The Land, The Verve's Urban Hymns and Daft Punk's Homework.Electronic music was having a moment, Britpop was waning, music was becoming less reliant on real people playing drums, samples came from hip-hop and was changing pop music, there was a whole strand of electronic music, that had spilled out of the 88 acid house era in the UK and was making a mark.Dig Your Own Hole took the pair supernova in the music world, catapulting them from the big beat scene they were associated with to a zeitgeist-capturing dance music informed by psychedelia, funk, hip-hop, soul, rock and acid house.“They take a whole new song structure, the song structure of a house record, and make a psychedelic rock record.” - Jason Bentley KCRW DJ“Britpop-with-breakbeats” - Energy Flash: A Journey Through Rave Music and Dance Culture, Simon ReynoldsListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistSupport Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
