At the age of 69, Ron decided to train for a solo IronMan. Due to covid, he wasn't able to complete it until September 2022, at the age of 71 and in just 15 hours.  But for Ron, it wasn't so much about the physical challenge - but more about using it as a vehicle to exorcise the demons of childhood abuse, that he'd carried his whole life.  Raising money for the National Association of People Abused in Childhood, Ron tells us how every cycle and every run was a way to "squeeze the bas*ard" out of his mind and his life, once and for all.  As part of the "What's Possible When You Decide" series, I feel that this interview is more about what happens when you KEEP deciding. Keep deciding that you are worthy. Keep deciding that you can love yourself. Keep deciding that there is a different future available.  I have listened to many of Ron's stories when we spent a couple of months working together, and I continue to be inspired by this man over and again. Thank you Ron for sharing your story with us.  If you'd like to learn more about and support NAPAC, you can do so here.  If you have a story about decisions that you'd like to share, please drop an email to contact@louisecartwright.com with details. This is not an easy subject, but a necessary one, especially when you hear the statistics on child sexual abuse. Many children don't understand what's happening to them and often can't talk about it until they are way into adult hood and what they perceive to be a 'safe place'. The impact, as we see in this episode, can be life long and pernicious. I talk to consultant psychiatrist in psychotherapy Dr Jo Stubley who leads the adult section of the trauma service at the NHS Tavistock Centre. Jo is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Society and also took part in our trauma episode in series one (do listen to this if you haven't already). We talk about what grooming is, how to look out for it (an abuser grooms not just their victim but often the whole family), how to look out for signs that your child may be experiencing abuse and if you're a survivor of non recent child sexual abuse we hope you can find something in this episode to make you feel less alone.I care about all the CSA letters I get sent but, for the first time ever, I tell my childhood friend's story, which explains why this subject is so close to my heart.Organisations that can help:Napac is the National Association for People Abused in Childhood; it has a helpline (0808 801 0331) and lots of information on its website about how to access support. It's where I refer all my readers who write in to me who have been affected by any form of non recent child abuse. There's also the NSPCC for help and information and Childline (helpline 0800 1111) for children experiencing any form of abuse. The Lucy Faithfull Foundation is the only UK-wide child protection charity dedicated solely to preventing child sexual abuse, they work with all those affected by abuse, including the abuser and they run the Stop It Now helpline: 0808 1000 9000.Make a one off donation: https://supporter.acast.com/conversations-with-annalisa-barbieriWant this podcast ad free: head over to my Patreon https://www.patreon.com/annalisabarbieri Follow us: Twitter: @AnnalisaB, Instagram: @pocketannalisaSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/conversations-with-annalisa-barbieri. This episode is very close to my own heart, voices that so often go unheard in the conversation around domestic abuse but actually in society as a whole are children. Which is ironic given how much money and resources are spent picking up the pieces of childhood trauma as adults, never mind children’s lives that are lost and debilitated due to the lack of prioritization of early intervention and prevention. It’s very easy for us to demonise a young person’s behaviour instead of looking beyond what they are having to deal with in their young lives. I could sit all evening telling you about what being brought up in fear on a day to day basis does to somebody, but also not being taught to love or be loved, and it is mixed up in a confusion of love and abuse, this person's my parent they’re supposed to protect me, love me… but I wanted you to hear from both the perspective of an adult survivor in his 30’s who didn’t receive support as a young boy and a young girl who’s currently being supported by the Opening Closed Doors Project in Gwent, Wales.Thank you to Dave and Carys for having the courage to share their stories with us.Joining us for this episode is Erin Jobb, Barnardo’s Northern Ireland Children’s Services Manager and has been working as a social worker with children and families for over 20 years in relation to child protection. If this is something that affects or has affected you.
