American endurance swimmer Diana Nyad faced down box jellyfish, cold and extreme fatigue to become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage for protection, in 2013. She was 64 and had always been drawn by intense, seemingly unachievable feats of marathon swimming. It was after shooting to fame for swimming round the island of Manhattan in the 1970s that Diana first seized on an idea that had been planted in her head in childhood: she would swim the 112 miles from Cuba to Florida's Key West. Five attempts and more than thirty years later, she finally succeeded, wobbling unsteadily up the beach after nearly 53 hours in the water to tell a cheering crowd, "never, ever give up... you are never too old to chase your dreams." Even if you aren't aware of its particular elements, you are familiar with the hero's journey. It underpins many of our favourite stories, used in PR and marketing, and informs the narratives around sports and celebrities. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I explore the personal and cultural impact of the hero's journey. We'll explore how it shapes self-worth, personal value, and the pursuits we deem meaningful. By contrasting it with elements of Kishōtenketsu narrative structure, which Kendra Patterson helped us explore in our recent Courtyard workshop, we will begin to consider different ways to perceive and respond to life's unexpected events. The Hero's Journey Archetype Joseph Campbell suggested that all mythic narratives throughout history and across cultures are variations of the same story—a hero's journey archetype. This concept picked up mainstream momentum in the 70s and 80s, after it influenced George Lucas in creating Star Wars. This was a tipping point for the monomyth, as it started to PRODUCE culture rather than deriving FROM culture. In other words, it went from being a description of the patterns Campbell concluded (cultures tell stories with similar archetypes) to a prescriptive model (here are the universal elements for telling a story). The textbooks started flowing and the hero's journey became ubiquitous. We see it in fields of psychology, marketing, and personal braining as well as books, TV, and film (including documentary-making). In this episode, I explore some of the implications of using the hero's journey to frame, perceive, and judge ourselves. We will spot some examples in culture. Including England's recent Euro 2024 disappointment, the story of Diana Nyad's swim from Cuba to Florida, and the tropes we see in some of our favourite TV shows. My intention isn't simply to poop on the party. But rather to become more sensitive to the hero's journey. When we recognise it, we can choose whether it's useful to us or not. We can then spot it being used to manipulate us into spending money, energy, and trust on bad actors. We will consider Kishōtenketsu as an alternative way of relating to the story we embody and tell with our lives. Rather than using conflict as a necessity for change, what happens when we relegate it to tangential and contingent parts of life that we choose our response to instead? In the episode, we consider: Ways the hero's journey creates a conflict with reality as its source of meaning How the hero's journey structure has become embedded in marketing and PR Why I get frustrated at the types of pitches I am often sent by people wanting to appear as guests on the podcast The unrealistic expectations the hero's journey sets and its impact on self-judgment and societal pressures The role of conflict in Kishōtenketsu compared with a hero's journey How highly sensitive people might get subsumed into other peoples' hero's journeys (using the movie, Nyad as an example of this) Kishōtenketsu, through a "guy walks into a bar" joke by TB Mckenzie, demonstrates how this narrative structure uses conflict as a tangential element rather than a central premise Links Listen to Kendra's episode about calming effects of Kishōtenketsu on Stepping Off Now Learn more about the Haven Courtyard workshop For further reading on Kishōtenketsu, check out Adeline Bindra's article. https://youtu.be/5vIKpOsIrP4

TOB followers know that we are obsessed with discovering positive and powerful roles for older women in movies and TV. That's why we lure our sister Screen Bitches -- Debbie Zimmerman (Women Make Movies), Malaga Baldi (Baldi Literary Agency) and Aruna Rao (Gender at Work)  – onto the podcast at least twice a year to schmooze about what we're watching and how TV and movies challenge (or regrettably affirm) stereotypes of older women in popular media. This time, we were kind of gobsmacked. For three reasons. First, because Debbie was inducted into the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (Oscars!) this year --so this episode features her firsthand account of an Academy newbie, walking the (other) red carpet. Second, because we actually found at least one film and a dramatic series with really superb portrayals of older women. If you haven't seen Slow Horses (Apple TV) or Nyad (Netflix), stop what you're doing right now and tune in. We thought that Annette Bening and Jodie Foster were extraordinary in the way they portrayed 60-year old Diana Nyad and her best friend Bonnie Stoll in Nyad's swim from Cuba to Florida. (Only three of us loved the movie.) And while they are not main characters, three —not one, but three!— powerful and pivotal women over 50 in Slow Horses – Sophie Okonedo, Saskia Reeves, and Kristin Scott Thomas  -- epitomize characteristics you rarely see attributed to women of a certain age.    And third, we were so inspired – especially by Slow Horses – that TOB is now launching a screening tool to let movie and TV makers know we're watching. You know how Alison Bechdel brilliantly coined The Bechdel Test as a set of three simple criteria to measure the active presence (or absence) of women in film? Well, we love that test – and appreciate the influence it's had on generating more and better roles for women -- so we're introducing The TOBies, a set of 5 criteria to measure the quality of presence of OLDER women in TV and film. And they are that the older women are: 1) NOT solely defined by their age; 2) integral to the plot; 3) making independent choices (e.g., they have agency); 4) NOT seeking a man as ‘the prize'; 5) there are at least two older women (e.g., no tokenism). We'd love to know what you think! And to know if you see any films or TV shows where you think the portrayals of older women meet these criteria. Nyad (2023) is a biographical sports drama based on swimmer Diana Nyad's life and her book Find a Way: The Inspiring Story of One Woman's Pursuit of a Lifelong Dream. It stars Annette Bening as Diana and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, Diana's best friend and trainer. Rhys Ifans also stars as John Bartlett, the navigator of her support ship. The film follows Diana as she attempts to complete the 110-mile nonstop swim from Cuba to Florida that has eluded her since 1978. In 2011, at the age of 60 Diana makes the first of many attempts to complete the journey. Nyad follows a standard sports biopic template, except there are big questions about the validity of her completed swim. Not only is the main swim potentially not 100% accurate, some of the major moments in the Nyad completely fictional. There was no shark! Recommendability scores for Nyad were firmly floating around the threes, not a bad film but also not an especially exciting or remarkable one. Everyone was in agreement that it is also a good film to watch while doing a task, so not particularly high on engagement, which gives an overall score of 2.70. Its a quick one with 3 Body Problem, Cabrini, Nyad, and Apples Never Fall. It's just Lauren and Kevin this week and they make swift work of their respective topics. Lauren kicks it off with the biopic, Nyad, about Diana Nyad, the 60 year old woman who swam from Cuba to Florida - a distance of well over 100 miles. It's a fascinating documentary about a woman's battle against the odds and the triumph of her spectacular achievement. Kevin uses Annette Benning as the springboard to transition to Apples Never Fall, the Gone Girl-esque family drama on Peacock. It's a show with all the potential in the world, between Benning, Same Neil, and the writers of Big Little Lies, but it fails a bit in the execution. Lauren then takes us in her way back machine to turn of the century New York with Cabrini. It's a tale of a nun who travels from Italy to America, only to discover that her people are being treated worse than anyone could have imagined. Her battle to improve conditions for these people makes for a compelling story that everyone should see. Kevin closes out the show with this springs big Netflix blockbuster series, 3 Body Problem. Adapted from a Chinese science fiction novel of the same name (and the first book in a trilogy) by the creators of the Game of Thrones series, Benioff and Weiss, it does suffer from some of the pacing that the latr seasons of Thrones did, but is overall a very good series. The Creative Spirits Podcast

In this episode I talk about an inspirational true story of Diana Nyad and 3 key lessons I learned from her. In 1978 Nyad first attempted a Cuba-to-Florida crossing, which was some 110 miles (180 km) across the Straits of Florida. She swam with the aid of a shark cage, but rough seas forced her to abandon the effort. After turning 30, she gave up swimming to focus on a career in broadcast journalism, but decades later she decided to take another shot at the goal that had eluded her. She failed twice in 2011, both times without a shark cage: in August she was forced to quit after some 29 hours because of an asthma attack, and in late September her swim was cut short after 40 hours when she sustained painful jellyfish stings. A lightning storm and other obstacles foiled her fourth attempt, in August 2012, after she had spent 60 hours in the water. The following year, at the age of 64, Nyad made yet another attempt, aided by a 35-person support team that included Bonnie Stoll, her coach and former partner. After 52 hours 54 minutes 18.6 seconds, Nyad completed the epic swim on September 2. In the ensuing days, however, some critics faulted her for not following strict guidelines known as the English Channel rules, which forbid distance swimmers to ever make contact with another person or a support boat. While Nyad acknowledged being touched by members of her support team as she donned or removed specialized gear that protected her against dangerous jellyfish stings—gear that she deemed “a lifesaving necessity”—she insisted that such contact was incidental and that she never touched a boat during the swim. Nyad was the author of several books, including the memoirs Other Shores (1978) and Find a Way (2015), the latter of which focuses on her historic swim. She was also the subject of the documentary The Other Shore (2013) and the biopic Nyad (2023), which starred Annette Bening in the title role and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll. Nyad was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 1978 and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sheryl-benjy/support

Understanding the balance between dark comedy and mystery is a unique quality of Annette Bening, which she puts to good use in Peacock's limited series Apples Never Fall (March 14), based on Liane Moriarty's book. “Everybody has a secret, and that's fun.” Bening plays Joy Delaney, the matriarch of a seemingly perfect family who suddenly disappears. “Even in the best comedies, there's a deep dis-ease inside of people that we're trying to dramatize.” In typical Bening style, she's able to show this dance between genres with such subtlety. “A lot of times in film, the moments that we remember characters are often quiet [ones].” Describing the story as “juicy,” Bening says, “right now we all need a certain amount of entertainment.” Recently she did just that in the film Nyad, playing the real-life Diana Nyad, who broke records swimming from Cuba to Florida coached by her friend Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster). The role earned her an Academy Award nomination. “This idea of chosen family is very familiar to [queer] people. And it's just important that people see that.” Visit Newsweek.com to learn more about the podcasts we offer and to catch up on the latest news. I'm Annette Leonard of https://www.annetteleonard.com find me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/theannetteleonard It's February, Black History Month, and we just had the Super Bowl. After watching the Netflix movie about Diana Nyad, my wife mentioned that people living with chronic pain have some things in common with elite athletes. Intense pain. Of course, unless there's injury involved, athletes can choose to stop. Obviously, living with chronic pain we can't skip the practice, training, workout. I thought it was an interesting perspective. Recently, my wife has been experiencing some hip pain and headaches. The onset has given her renewed appreciation for what it's like to live with intense chronic pain. There are moments when I appreciate the validation and other times when I'm annoyed by it. I though on this Valentines Day, I thought I'd send this note to you all in pain: I know your fuse is short, your energy is less. I think about the ways your life has had to be smaller because of pain. I'm sorry. I wish we had better solutions. I wish you weren't having to use your energy and giving so much of yourself figuring out how to get through the day/get out of bed/get to the bathroom/manage the kids/cook a meal. I hate that we don't have better pain management. This invisible demon means that others can't see all that you're up against. They can't see that all your energy is being consumed by pain. As you manage a pain level 8 and try to carry on a conversation. This isn't an easy path. You don't get to put this weight down, and experience relief. You get to take up space. It's easy to compare my suffering to others -- but it isn't helpful. If your self compassion needs a tune up, check out Kristin Neff's resources: https://self-compassion.org/category/exercises/#guided-meditations Do a meditation, journal, or take a quiz. I'm sorry you're hurting that we don't do a better job managing pain. This is the Chronic Wellness Podcast. I'm Annette Leonard, speaker, coach, and sick person who believes that my illnesses do not define me. If health is the absence of disease and wellness is the presence of wholeness, then no matter what your disease status, we can work toward your wellness, your wholeness. Whether or not you are ever "healthy" on paper, you can be well. Join me and others on the path back to wholeness at AnnetteLeonard.com. The hosts begin by dissecting The Zone of Interest, filmmaker Jonathan Glazer's audacious movie about the Holocaust that's told through the lens of Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig as they live their somewhat ordinary lives in a compound outside of Auschwitz. The film has garnered both praise and severe critique from critics, many of whom are split on Glazer's detached aesthetic and imaginative approach to depicting genocide. The Zone of Interest has racked up five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Then, the three dive into Nyad, the (maybe?) true story of marathon swimmer Diana Nyad, as she attempts to swim unassisted from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening stars in the titular role alongside Jodie Foster, both of whom are up for Oscars (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively). Finally, what is a good director, anyway? What does it look like, what does it mean, and is there a difference between producing, screenwriting, and directing – or is it some strange amalgamation of all three? These questions come from a listener, Emily, and the panel attempts to answer them.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses their film preferences while airborne, inspired by David Mack's essay for Slate, “What Makes a Perfect ‘Plane Movie'?” Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Outro music: "Pull Me Out" by Mike Stringer. Other topics: getting up from the couch after periods of forced rest, improving recovery rates during hard training, a new American Record at 50 miles, a wild (true?) story from swimming featuring Diana Nyad, an update on the drama surrounding the USATF Marathon Trials, retirement in trail running, cut-off times, e-bikes, creatine supplementation, and hot takes. Somehow, we discuss the plot of the 1995 movie Casper. We hadn't seen it in 18 years, so get ready for a whimsical game of telephone with the deranged movies we showed kids in the 90s.
