Sadly, we're almost coming to the end of our Miscarriage series, and this time we're talking about support. Sometimes it can be difficult to reach out for support, especially as miscarriage is tragically still viewed a taboo subject. In this episode, we chat with Zoe Clarke-Coates. Zoe is the co-founder of the award-winning charity ‘The Mariposa Trust' (widely known by the name of its primary division called https://www.sayinggoodbye.org/ (sayinggoodbye.org)) and the author of 3 books, which are essential reading for anyone who is grieving. Zoe is also the co-chair of the Government's National Pregnancy Loss Review. Zoe's interview is essential listening if you are, or have experienced baby loss, no matter whether this is recently or years ago. We talk about the support Zoe's charity offers, how miscarriage care is changing for the better and how it is possible to move forward with hope and joy for the future. The Taboo of Miscarriage The culture surrounding miscarriage is the belief that you shouldn't talk about being pregnant until you're past the 12-week point. However, this serves to enforce the taboo surrounding miscarriage, as does our UK culture of finding it difficult to talk about death. Until we can openly discuss death and early pregnancy it will be difficult to remove this taboo. National Loss Certificate We discuss how the care of bereaved parents following a miscarriage, is changing for the better, especially with Zoe's involvement in the recent Governmental review and the work of Zoe's charity in promoting good NHS care for women and couples who have experienced baby loss. Zoe launched a campaign to acknowledge early pregnancy and advocates that bereaved parents can choose to receive a National Loss certificate in the same way that a birth and death certificate is issued. Therefore acknowledging the loss. Support from ‘Saying Goodbye' Zoe's charity offers various support, and one of the lovely things they do is hold regular Remembrance Services. Zoe talks about how emotional these events are but how it has such a powerful and beautiful impact for bereaved parents. She also tells us about how miscarriage can impact on a relationship and how the charity supports couples as well as the individual. Moving forward with hope Zoe believes that it is important to help people to find hope again and that people need lighthouses to show hope for the future. It is about acknowledging the pain and giving language to grief but also saying that even while you are feeling this, there is hope. The Books Zoe has published books some of which are practical books to help couples to process grief and move forward. These are applicable if you have just gone through a loss or even if you experienced baby loss over 20 years ago – the books are there to offer support and practical guidance. Zoe has also written ‘Beyond Goodbye' which is a general book for anyone experiencing any type of loss such as the loss of a parent, spouse, sibling or friend. In our chat we talk about another podcast interview Zoe had with Cariad Lloyd who hosts the brilliant Griefcast and I wanted to share that with you https://www.mixcloud.com/griefcast/93-zoe-clark-coates-from-saying-goodbye/ (also ) SOCIAL MEDIA: Zoe Clarke-Coates https://www.sayinggoodbye.org (Saying Goodbye) https://www.thefertilitypodcast.com (The Fertility Podcast ) https://instagram.com/fertilitypoddy (Natalie Silverman) http://%C2%A0www.yourfertilityjourney.com (Your Fertility Journey ) https://instagram.com/your_fertility_journey (Kate Davies)

Today Zoe speaks to broadcaster, voiceover artist, and podcaster Natalie Silverman. Natalie talks about the work she is doing around fertility and the relaunch of her podcast as well as her own journey to motherhood. KEY TAKEAWAYS Natalie has been running her podcast the fertility podcast for 7 years. She had no idea what she was starting at the beginning and never expected for it to last this long. There wasn't the fertility community there is now when she began the podcast, it was her therapy and is one of the things she is most proud of. Natalie is relaunching the podcast with more of a linear and clear approach to fertility. Pre-covid she was working with GPs to get more information out there so she now wants to try and make it used as an NHS resource. Natalie and her husband had been trying for a baby but nothing was happening so they went to their GP and had tests ran. They found out that they had male-factor infertility, they were fortunate to have treatment and it worked. However, the diagnosis had a large impact on their relationship and Natalie's husband's confidence. Natalie was a breakfast host at the time and she was very open about all aspects of her life including the progression of her relationship and then marriage but she didn't feel like she could talk about her fertility journey. This was one of the reasons she wanted to break down the stigma. When Natalie thinks about her pregnancy she feels blessed as she had a good pregnancy and fairly straight forward birth. After her first child Natalie and her husband decided they didn't want to have another baby. They spent quite some time thinking about treatment and their lives to come to this decision including counselling. There can be a lot of stigma and guilt surround having one child. As a society, we need to talk about this more. Not all siblings get on and are supportive yet we are sold the story that having one child means they will be lonely, spoilt amongst other things. All children are so different and have different needs and all parenting is different too! Natalie is a freedom formula success consultant – it's a step by step formula that teaches you about how to deal with your emotions and looking after your mind whilst going through fertility problems. Natalie coaches and helps people with this formula to teach them how they can ‘come back to neutral'. It's a mixture of talking, CBT and visualisations and also helps people know how to cope with the outcomes of fertility problems. BEST MOMENTS “Have you felt stigma attached to only having one child?” “It's been a real privilege to have people share such an intimate part of their world with you and learn so much” “I'm talking about this private thing in a public way” “Why do we have guilt for having one?” “They've been part of the journey in their own way” “I talk about it being the hardest decision of my life” VALUABLE RESOURCES www.petalscharity.org www.tommys.org www.arc-uk.org www.sands.org.uk www.thefertilitypodcast.com @fertilitypoddy ABOUT THE GUEST Natalie Silverman www.thefertilitypodcast.com @fertilitypoddy ABOUT THE HOST Zoe Cresswell Devoted mother of two (and a big hairy dog), UK trained midwife, doula and personal trainer, specialising in pre and postnatal fitness. Zoe was born in the UK and before moving to Dubai in 2013 and worked as a midwife in central London, both in a birth centre and a very busy NHS hospital. Although late to the scene, Zoe is an aspiring athlete having won numerous triathlons and representing Great Britain where she placed within the top 10 on the world stage. With her husband James, the couple will soon be launching their cloth nappy company, Bop & Bee, where they hope to inspire families to swap a few disposable nappies a day for the more planet friendly option of cloth. Zoe's goal is to share her knowledge and experience, tell real life stories, manage expectations and open up those often difficult conversations. Zoe's own motherhood journey has been full of twists and turns as she put everything on hold and went through numerous miscarriages and rounds of IVF. Covid-19 and fertility treatments We appreciate given the current crisis you may well be worrying about what covid-19 means for your fertility treatments, and therefore at the beginning of this episode we give you an update on the current advice. At the moment, there is limited guidance out there, however this will likely change in the coming days/weeks. Currently, the HFEA recommend that you contact your clinic for advice as each clinic will likely have contingency plans in place. We plan to chat with experts this coming week and will, of course, keep you informed of any developments that relate to fertility treatments. If you are required to self-isolate over the coming weeks, then you can be reassured that The Fertility Podcast will be keeping you entertained. So, make sure you subscribe so not to miss an episode! Parenthood in Mind Next up, Natalie and Kate talk to Julianne Boutaleb who is a peri-natal psychologist and Clinical Director and Founder of the Parenthood in Mind practice. Julianne works with women and couples who have experienced trauma in relation to birth and miscarriage but also with women who suffer with fertility trauma. Typical patients that Julianne works with are couples who have concerns with regards to known genetic issues, couples who are facing assisted conception, couples who have had failed cycles or reproductive injuries and those contemplating donor conception, surrogacy or adoption to create or complete their family. Many couples who have previously experienced miscarriage come to Julianne as they have a fear – either physically or emotionally of a miscarriage reoccurring. Tokophobia Tokophobia is the fear of being pregnant or giving birth. Tokophobia may occur in women who have never given birth to a child, but it may also affect women who have had prior traumatic pregnancy or birth experiences. Protecting your relationship Couples who don't conceive are 3 times more likely to separate or divorce than couples who do conceive. Clinics are starting to support couples more with regards to the emotional impact Often reaching the menopause can be a trigger for women who haven't been successful in conceiving through assisted conception. Julianne helps couples rewrite their ‘happy ever after' story without children. Fertility Trauma* The term Fertility Trauma helps to highlight that struggling to conceive is a true trauma and this also includes ‘perceived' trauma. Fertility trauma is not just depression, anxiety or stress but is your brain going in to ‘fight and flight' mode. Our Leah was nominated for two VOX awards this year, but did she win them? Does it even matter? What's the difference between awards in the UK and the US? And what if you have to pay to enter? Does that make it worth less? We bring you all the answers - or at least some vaguely researched pontificating - in our special bonus episode direct from VOX 2019. Featuring insider info from multi-award winners Rick Loynes, Darren Altman & Jack Oddie, and the super-talent that is Natalie Silverman. It's a bonus episode! Join Nic, Leah, Paul Brown and special guest Natalie Silverman for a quick jaunt back in time to find out if things really were better in the olden days of commercial voiceover. Plus, find out how YOU could be the proud owner of the preposterous number plate A1 MVO! Also, the oooonly time we could find to record this bonus episode was on the fast (loud) train home from the One Voice Conference. Thank goodness for the amazing Rob Bee! He saved the day with his magical noise hoover. Here's his website, do use him for all your audio needs: https://beeproductive.co.uk/ By the way, Nat is a naturally husky VO anyway, but this was some extreme husk... She's better now though, fully recovered from whatever it was and back to husking around at a sensible level.
