Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Healthier Hens Y2.5 update and new avenues, published by lukasj10 on April 19, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR Healthier Hens (HH) aims to improve cage-free hen welfare, focusing on key issues such as keel bone fractures (KBFs). In the last 6 months, we've conducted a vet training in Kenya, found a 42% KBF prevalence, and are exploring alternative promising interventions in collaboration with the Welfare Footprint Project, publishing transferrable findings along the way. Our staff satisfaction remains high, but concerns about operational capacity are on the rise. We're deciding on future strategies, considering funding and organizational changes. Our budget for Y3 ('23 Sep - '24 Sep) is $65k-$135k, with a $0-70k funding gap. In this post, we share key updates, lessons learned and our plans for immediate next steps. We hope others can benefit from what we're observing and our attempts to identify promising pathways towards improved hen health and welfare. We welcome feedback from the community. Key points Healthier Hens (HH) continues looking for ways to address major sources of cage-free egg-laying hen pain such as keel bone fractures (KBFs) through data collection and capacity building. Consider reading our introductory, 6M, 1Y, 1.5Y and 2Y update posts to learn more about our background, mission and updated approach. Due to funding constraints, we had downscaled last year and continue running lean, focusing on identifying promising avenues via mini-projects before piloting anything on the ground. Our Y3 (Sep '23 - Sep '24) budget will mainly comprise of outreach, staff, travel, and potential research activity costs. We raised $65k for this year's work. In our ongoing scoping efforts in Kenya we conducted a KBF baseline case study, a vet training workshop on hen welfare, and are exploring a certification scheme and alternative promising interventions. We continue publishing details on how we go about seeking impact for the hens, including outcomes and lessons learned for others to incorporate in their activities. Our mid-year staff survey revealed overall satisfaction with our culture and values but also some concerns about time commitments and task distribution. Although there is room for improvement, we all still agree that hen welfare is our priority. Our next strategic decision-making point is in May 2024, where we'll choose a scenario from a pool ranging from shutting down to trialling a couple of interventions, depending on the final impact and cost-efficacy estimates. Our funding gap is small and scenario-dependent. Our runway is flexible (3M max.). We will need $0-75k for the second half of 2024. HH team preparing for the vet training, Nairobi, November, 2023. End of vet training, Nairobi, November, 2023. Specific HH Y2.5 updates In-person veterinarian training ( full report here): We partnered with the University of Nairobi and held a two-day training for vet professionals, who visit farms routinely. The main purpose of the training was to provide knowledge on proper hen welfare and grow on-farm assessment capacity among active professionals. We had received over 70 applications and invited 22 veterinarians to attend, 18 of whom attended. Our training was approved by the Kenya Veterinary Board as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity earning the participants 16 CPD points each - a factor that significantly incentivised the participants. Over two days, 9 experts from various fields provided class lectures and practical sessions in the veterinary surgery room. We concluded the training with a site visit to a cage-free farm to perform on-farm welfare indicator assessments. We conducted pre-, post- and 2-month-post surveys to evaluate the outcomes of the training. Additionally, a key informant survey was conducted six weeks after the ...

China's exports have decreased for three months in a row, dropping 14.5% in July compared to last year. Imports have also fallen for five consecutive months in the same period. This decline is the largest since February 2020. In this businessline podcast, Santosh Pai, Partner at Dentons Link Legal and Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) sheds light on China's export situation. While the headlines emphasise the sharp drop, Pai provides context by explaining that the decline in the first seven months of the year amounts to 5 per cent, suggesting a more gradual trend. He notes that this decline aligns with the ongoing pressure on Chinese exports due to factors like the US-China trade war and the pandemic-induced disruptions. Pai delves into the reasons behind this export decline, citing weak global demand as a short-term factor and the shift in trade patterns due to geopolitical reasons as a long-term trend. He acknowledges that diversification away from China in supply chains is a continuing process, as countries seek to build resilience and reduce dependency. The conversation moves to India's efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese imports. Santosh clarifies that India is not imposing bans but rather working to diversify its sources of imports, emphasising the need to boost domestic manufacturing. He notes that India's focus on reducing dependency aligns with global trends of supply chain diversification. Regarding the impact on the yuan's value, Pai mentions that China's central bank is actively managing its currency and policies to prevent a flight of capital, indicating a careful approach to maintain stability. The discussion also touches on the evolving India-China relationship. Santosh explains India's cautious approach to Chinese investments, focusing on attracting non-sensitive investments in manufacturing while also managing political considerations. Overall, the discussion provides insights into China's export challenges, India's efforts to diversify, and the broader implications for global trade dynamics and bilateral relationships. Two powerful ideas to consider when you see someone struggling.1. I wonder what happened to you?2. How can I help you?Healing through neuroplasticity is not about quick fixes or short-term solutions; it's about understanding the root causes of these conditions. It's about recognising that it is not about an individual but about the community and Society. How to begin to break the cycle of high stress, multigenerational trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACES), poor sleep, unhealthy food and lack of exercise. It's about acknowledging that our brains can be rewired over time through consistent, healthy behaviors. It's a hopeful message: even if our Society has conditioned our brains towards unhealthy behaviours, we are able to condition towards change and recovery. This perspective shifts the focus from mere symptom management to actual healing. Let's continue our efforts to create a society that promotes mental and physical health through education, empathy, and access to resources. And remember, it's time we start embracing neuroplasticity as a powerful ally on this journey.Interview with Ashutosh Garg, Founder of the Brand Called You podcast.https://youtu.be/odBqLJo9hvkhttps://www.linkedin.com/posts/coach-ashutoshgarg_addiction-obesity-leader-activity-7087057221624184832-Yiez?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop #Neuroplasticity #Addiction #Obesity #Recovery #Healing #BrainHealth #Resilience#community #social connection matters to solve addiction and obesity. Pressures on the global humanitarian protection system have only worsened as the Afghan and Ukrainian refugee crises come on top of longstanding displacement from Syria, Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and other countries. These crises have given new urgency to finding ways to connect displaced peoples with opportunities to find safety and resume their lives. The use of complementary pathways, such as existing work and study visa channels, has been touted by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and others as an option running alongside traditional avenues such as asylum and refugee resettlement. But how can humanitarian migrants with skills and experience potentially use existing work or study pathways to fill labor market needs in destination countries? In this episode, MPI's Susan Fratzke speaks with Betsy Fisher, U.S. Director of the nonprofit Talent Beyond Boundaries, about complementary pathways. Learn more about innovative solutions to support displaced peoples and connect them with job opportunities.

Post World War II America ushered unprecedented change in the way Americans worked, lived, and traveled. What's more, many technologies we depend on today were born through the space program of the 1960s. They include things like satellite TV and navigation, laptop computers and smartphones, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and the joystick used in computer gaming – technologies that also make #vanlife travel and working from the road possible. But possibly the most significant achievement was the development of the Interstate Highway System. The interstate highway system opened a door to convenient and widespread motor vehicle travel. We discuss this and more on this episode of Rolling Home. Show notes --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Offering paid job training for youth. Sara Hart Weihmann is the Director of Social Enterprise at New Avenues for Youth in Portland. She oversees a portfolio of workforce development social enterprises that offer goods and services to the local community. This provides paid work experiences and job training for youth experiencing housing instability. These enterprises include a Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop and a screen-printing business, New Avenues INK. “I have always had a strong sense of environmental justice since I was a young kid,” Sara explains. “My parents would tell you that I was constantly giving them feedback about lights being left on in rooms. I had these little tickets I would issue to them if they left the lights on. “So I’ve always been Type A do the right thing. You fall into line. We owe the environment everything. So I really took that environmental view forward into my life. “In my younger years, I even thought that environmental justice needed to come first before social justice was addressed. “After graduating college, I found a unique MBA graduate program in the Bay Area with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and social justice. I started a business specializing in installing edible gardens and urban farms throughout the Bay Area. “What started as a passion for ecological sustainability and horticulture quickly evolved into a passion for food sovereignty, social justice, and elevating the voices of indigenous, black, and people of color to advocate for the resources they needed to thrive in the community. “I started participating on non-profit boards, coalitions, and councils focusing on food system equity. I found myself passionate about working with young people living in excluded neighborhoods and mentoring them in agriculture and business strategy. “There is nothing more fulfilling to me than seeing young people recognize their inherent value in an entrepreneurial setting where they get the freedom to brainstorm and take risks with their peers with guidance from mentors. “When I moved back to my hometown of Portland, I noticed this opportunity at New Avenues for Youth as Director of Social Enterprise. It seemed like an excellent fit for my skills and passion. It was a combination of business strategy and management to serve young people experiencing housing insecurity. “That was over seven years ago, and I still feel inspired every day by the impacts our workforce development social enterprises have on participants and the community.” About New Avenues INK: New Avenues INK is a screen-printing social enterprise owned and operated by non-profit New Avenues for Youth. Since its establishment in 2013, New Avenues INK has specialized in providing high-quality, cost-competitive decorated apparel items to customers while delivering paid work experiences and job training to youth experiencing homelessness in the community. New Avenues for Youth’s social enterprise portfolio has provided hundreds of paid internships over the years to young people who have little-to-no traditional work experience. Young people receive an hourly wage to learn necessary job skills and participate in career exploration and career coaching. Interns can build confidence in businesses, experience being a part of a team, practice receiving and providing feedback, and ultimately learn about the world of work in a trauma-informed environment. NUGGET CONTEXT Kartik speaks about the impact of AI on jobs of the future. He cautions that it is not just the menial blue collar type of jobs that are at risk but a wider array of jobs where machines could replace man. He goes on to talk about the implication for us and how we should think about staying relevant in the future. GUEST Kartik Hosanagar is the John C. Hower Professor of Technology and Digital Business and a Professor of Marketing at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Kartik’s research work focuses on the digital economy, in particular the impact of analytics and algorithms on consumers and society, Internet media, Internet marketing and e-commerce. His book - “A Human’s guide to Machine Intelligence” has recently been published by Penguin Randomhouse in India. The book is a comprehensive overview of the impact of AI and ML on our lives. It is written in simple language and is accessible, relevant and insightful even if you are not tech-savvy and familiar with AI, ML and related topics. The book delves into various implications of AI and ML including how we should think about consuming content, making decisions, diversifying our perspectives, solving for privacy while benefiting from the convenience of AI and more. We spoke about some of these elements and discussed how we should think about staying relevant in a world of exponential change that human beings are not prepared to process and make sense of. Albert Allen Bartlett (Professor of Physics) famously says “The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function”. Published in May 2019. It’s Design Week in Portland! The week when all of the makers, the tallest and the smallest, get together to talk about the looks they love, the technology they’re using, and the newest concepts and products they're dreaming up. From streetwear to downtown Portland to sporting goods to candy, everything's on the drawing board. We started out the festival last week with a live Think Out Loud show at the Redd, an old industrial building in Southeast Portland that's serving as DWP's headquarters. This week, we're packaging some of those interviews together with new reported stories from the rest of the fest.JavHack: Reimagining Sports Ergonomics - 5:48You might not think the javelin needs innovation. It worked for four-hundred thousand years of human history, right? But track and field athletes are always pushing the limits. We spoke with record-breaking javelin thrower Tom Petronoff about the need for a new design vision and the time he almost speared Alberto Salazar. You can see videos of some high-class javelin chucking and a vintage clip of Tom Petranoff narrated by Caitlin Jenner here. Cutting Edge Pixels with the Annual Animation Challenge - 10:04Jamal Qutub has been in love with animation since he was a kid. For work, he creates animations for clients like Adidas and Intel, but in his spare time, Qutub runs AEPDX, a meetup group for local animators. For the past three years, Qutub has been putting together an animation challenge during Design Week. Local animators submit short films to be viewed and voted on by an audience of their peers and interested DWP spectators.Portland's Highline? A Proposed Park that Wants to Change How You See the City - 18:04Last year, Design Week featured a challenge to design a 6-mile linear park circling downtown Portland called the Green Loop. Now the winners, Untitled Studio, are taking the conceptual idea one step further with an interactive exhibit as part of this year’s festival. They stop in to tell us about their big dreams and why Portland needs the Green Loop.QUIN Candy's Magical Confections - 30:42What could be better at the end of Design Week Portland than dessert? Jami Curl told a sweet story on Friday about how she built two successful companies, QUIN Candy and Saint Cupcake, that stand out in the forest of Portland food brands. We visited her at her QUIN Candy production room this week and heard all about her candy-design.Design in the Forest: Maya Lin's Bird Blind - 37:33So many design stories originate on desktops and drafting tables, but we found one that must be experienced with hiking boots on. While Design Week took out a busload of explorers, we headed out to explore the Sandy River Delta with biologist Bill Weiler, Confluence Project member Colin Fogarty and designer Dylan Woock. In 2004, the Confluence Project kicked off with the goal of connecting people with places in the Columbia Basin. Confluence’s renowned artist and designer Maya Lin took on this challenge, and created an elliptical immersive sculpture out of wood and metal that blends effortlessly into the terrain. Portland At-Risk Youth Create Streetwear Label – 43:45“Don’t just rise, take flight” is the tagline of streetwear label dfrntpigeon, which is a collaboration between the non-profit New Avenues for Youth and branding gurus AKQA. Run by marginalized and homeless youth, the agency designs and sells shirts and apparel that are expressive, political, sometimes humorous, and sometimes dark. They’ve just released their newest line of tees, The Identity Collection, with screen printed shirts like “Humanity,” which shows four forearms holding a cigarette, a grenade, an hourglass, and a digital clock, surrounded by a ring of flowers.

The old days of buying a car are quickly fading. Times are changing for dealerships and manufacturers alike, driven partly by Gen X but mostly by Millennials. On this week’s show John McElroy talks to two different automakers about how they are changing their approach to servicing your car in hopes of attracting new customers. In addition, he’s also joined by the head of a new website that, if you can believe it, allows you to buy your car online without ever having to go to the dealer.
