Deborah Mattinson joined the House of Lords as a Labour peer in February. Her involvement in politics began when she worked alongside Peter Mandelson and Philip Gould to create Labour's Shadow Communications Agency for Neil Kinnock. In 1992 she co-founded Opinion Leader Research, and she went on to advise Tony Blair ahead of the 1997 election and later became Gordon Brown's chief pollster. In 2021 she was appointed Director of Strategy for Keir Starmer, a position she held until stepping down following last year's landslide victory. On the podcast, Deborah tells Katy Balls about growing up as a Labour supporter with a father active in local Tory politics, the work hard/play hard culture of advertising in the 1980s and how to decipher what voters really think during focus groups. They also talk about the differences between the 1987, ‘92, and ‘97 campaigns, the ‘Hero voters' that were key to Labour's electoral success in 2024 and how Labour can best tackle the threat from Reform today. With experience working with Labour spanning four decades, they touch on the Labour giants she worked with, including Alf (now Lord) Dubs, Peter (now Ambassador – also Lord) Mandelson and, more recently, the Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

Former leader of the Labour party Neil Kinnock, Lord Kinnock, is the latest guest on Lord Speaker's Corner.‘I guess that's what gave me my politics basically. The idea that many people working together could produce and provide at the level of quality that would've been absolutely impossible for the individual or the family.' Lord Kinnock speaks about growing up in south Wales and what drew him to politics, his early years as an MP and the Labour party of the late 80s and early 90s. He also speaks about his regrets from his time as leader, plus how politics and public discourse has changed today: ‘I don't want deference. Deference is not part of my makeup and I don't want anybody else to show it. But respect, accommodation, compassion, those instincts are fundamental to human beings, and they're too often being discarded or suppressed.'Lord Kinnock also explains that he wished he had challenged the President of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), Arthur Scargill, more forcefully about the need to ballot its members: 'I told Scargill at the beginning of April 1984 that without a ballot, the strike would not succeed. And I said it publicly, I just wish that I'd said it more publicly (even), and repeatedly over the subsequent months as a way of simply telling the truth to men and their families who were showing superhuman loyalty to the cause and whose loyalty was being abused by someone who had a very peculiar, very odd interpretation of what he thought of as his socialist mission, which was misplaced and misleading and assisted in tragedy. I've said before that Scargill and Thatcher deserved each other. Nobody else did.'The former Labour leader also gives a rare insight into private discussions between himself and Shadow Chancellor John Smith in preparation for the 1992 general election. Over a Chequers banquet of sole in shrimp sauce, fillet of beef, and caramelized oranges, Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev met for the first time on 16th December, 1984.  While their ideologies were worlds apart, Thatcher appreciated Gorbachev's frankness and imagination. The Soviet leader, meanwhile, seemed equally captivated by Thatcher's unapologetic firmness and sharp intellect. Their rapport formed the foundation of a relationship that would influence global politics profoundly, with Thatcher famously declaring the Russian "a man we can do business with". In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explore the rest of the Gorbachevs' holiday itinerary; explain how Neil Kinnock killed the vibes; and reveal what Denis and Raisa got up to while their spouses were deep in conversation…  Further Reading: • ‘Gorbachev and Thatcher: The Chequers meeting that melted the Cold War ice' (The Times, 2022): https://www.thetimes.com/article/e9c5616c-2942-11ed-9092-6adde03bf612 • 'Political leadership in the Cold War's ending: Thatcher and the turn to engagement with the Soviet Union' (British Politics and Policy at LSE, 2020): https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/thatcher-end-of-cold-war/ • ‘Margaret Thatcher would 'do business with' Mikhail Gorbachev - Daily Mail' (BBC News, 1984): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhl680YRT6g Learn more about your ad choices. This week on the Mark Levin Show, back in the 1980's Joe Biden stole the words from RFK and Neil Kinnock, and it cost him his Presidential candidacy. Today, we have Kamala Harris doing the same thing. Harris is accused of plagiarizing her first book. However, the majority of Americans might not hear about it because the media is covering it up. Most Americans are getting their election news from ABC, CBS and/or NBC. This plagiarism shows you how unethical and immoral she is. Also, Harris wants indigenous people's day to replace Columbus Day. This is another way for Harris to trash America and push her Marxist agenda. Later, can you think of any reason why there shouldn't be requirements for voter ID to prove that you are an American citizen? Can you think of any reason why a non-citizen should be permitted to be on a voter list for a state, thereby being capable of voting? The DOJ is suing Gov Glenn Youngkin for fulfilling his role and assuring that only legal citizens are able to vote on November 5th. Also, Kamala Harris is sharpening her teeth. Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and her campaign have decided she can't win on substance or policy. So, she is on the attack against Donald Trump. Harris is trying to cast Trump as the enemy from within while trashing Trump for saying the enemy from within. They are fear-mongering and they keep dehumanizing their political opponents. Finally, Israel has, by itself, changed the nature of the Middle East. If Israel hadn't defied the demands of this pathetic Biden-Harris-Blinken regime they wouldn't have gone into Rafah and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar wouldn't be dead today.

"A plan to turn the page and say, in a cry of defiance to all those who now write our country off: Britain must, Britain can, Britain will get its future back." I first saw Eddie Marsan in "Puss in Boots" in Chipping Norton in a Christmas Show circa 1990 (in a period of an acting career that many Actors often describe as being their 'wilderness years!') and then more recently I saw him again in a "BAFTA Retrospective" of his extraordinary career to date, hosted by  renowned journalist & broadcaster, Miranda Sawyer. Funnily enough,  Chipping Norton & "Puss in Boots" didn't actually come up during the BAFTA retrospective but suffice it to say, many of his subsequent TV & film 'Absolute Bangers' certainly did!Eddie Marsan is a real coup for "The Good Listening To Show". He is a personal hero of mine - a wonderful, wise, enigmatic & generous actor indeed who I always very much look forward to watching. You can also Watch/Listen to Eddie Marsan's episode on Vimeo here:https://vimeo.com/chrisgrimes/eddiemarsanThis is a great conversation suffused with much wisdom and many top-tips for aspiring Actors on topics such as how to better manage and overcome rejection (which very definitely comes with the territory of the job) with a sense of calm, resilience, objectivity & perspective. And also he reveals his "never more than 2 weeks apart" formula for surviving a long and happy marriage, with his family positioned front-and-centre in everything that he does. Eddie also richly credits, as he did during the BAFTA Retrospective, his Acting Teacher of old, John Osborne Hughes, founder of The Spiritual Psychology of Acting. The conversation also takes a philosophical turn as we dissect the 'Power of Paradox', a concept inspired by Lao Tzu's "Daodiching" and musings of a Swedish philosopher. Eddie shares his thoughts on societal binaryism, delves into the impact of acting legends like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Toby Jones on his own craft as an actor, and discusses Neil Kinnock's stirring speech at the Labour Party Conference in 1985. This thought-provoking discourse is packed with insights that will make you see the world and its paradoxes from a different perspective. We also step into more personal aspects of Eddie's life, exploring his strong affinity to his working-class roots and how they've influenced his life and career. Eddie talks about his love for Tottenham Football Club and music, and praises the new generation's open-mindedness towards gender and sexuality. We also touch upon his favourite films, his quirky-fact of a curious but harmless medical condition, and the wisdom & philosophy that  he lives by. Eddie Marsan is best known for portraying intense working-class blokes in both indie and blockbuster films. In a long & varied career to date (and it's not over yet!) Marsan has cemented his reputation as being the British counterpart to US Actor Paul Giamatti, with his unconventional looks and fearless performances keeping him perpetually in demand.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Neil Kinnock has a lesson or two for Keir Starmer. Kinnock led Labour after its crushing 1983 election defeat, facing down the hard left and restoring the party's credibility. He says a hung parliament would be “hideous”, but if Starmer doesn't get a majority, he should rule alone – without a coalition. His judgment on the Tories? A “drunken sailor” would look steady compared to Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. Hosted by Caroline Hepker, Yuan Potts and Lizzy Burden. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How the housing dream was betrayed, and how to fix it. Council houses fit for the wartime generation gave way to a “home-owning democracy”, but we priced the young out of home ownership and refused to build the properties they need. How did Britain screw up housing so badly? From prefabs to Poulson to Thatcher's Right to Buy and NIMBYism, Ros Taylor finds out how Britain's approach to housing went so very wrong. Along the way, Neil Kinnock remembers the cockroaches that infested his childhood home and what it meant to finally be treated with dignity. And Ros discovers what could be the future of housing. “Through benefits, taxpayers are paying the mortgages of hundreds of thousands of private landlords who can jack up rent at will.” – Ros Taylor “The revenue from Right To Buy went to the Treasury, not towards building new houses. It made about £47bn from Right To Buy.” – Jules Birch “My mother would say, Come in Neil, your dinner's on the table and it's getting dirty.” – Neil Kinnock “Council housing was irredeemably tainted by what happened in the 60s and 70s.” – Lynsey Hanley “The average Englishman and Englishwoman dreams of his or her own home and garden.” – Mass Observation “Council housing was no longer something to aspire to… it was now a place of last resort.” Neil Kinnock, Baron Kinnock PC is a British former politician. As a member of the Labour Party, he served as a Member of Parliament from 1970 until 1995, first for Bedwellty and then for Islwyn. He was the Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 1983 until 1992, and Vice-President of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004. Kinnock was considered as being on the soft left of the Labour Party.Born and raised in South Wales, Kinnock was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1970 general election. He became the Labour Party's shadow education minister after the Conservatives won power in the 1979 general election. After the party under Michael Foot suffered a landslide defeat to Margaret Thatcher in the 1983 election, Kinnock was elected Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition. During his tenure as leader, Kinnock proceeded to fight the party's left wing, especially its Militant tendency, and he opposed NUM leader Arthur Scargill's methods in the 1984–85 miners' strike. He led the party during most of the Thatcher administration, which included its third successive election defeat when Thatcher won the 1987 general election. Although Thatcher had won another landslide, Labour regained sufficient seats for Kinnock to remain Leader of the Opposition following the election.Kinnock led the Labour Party to a surprise fourth consecutive defeat at the 1992 general election, despite the party being ahead of John Major's Conservative government in most opinion polls, which had predicted either a narrow Labour victory or a hung parliament. Shortly afterwards, he resigned as Leader of the Labour Party, being succeeded in the ensuing leadership election by John Smith. He left the House of Commons in 1995 to become a European Commissioner. He went on to become the Vice-President of the European Commission under Romano Prodi from 1999–2004, before being elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Kinnock in 2005. Until the summer of 2009, he was also Chairman of the British Council and President of Cardiff University. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
