Did you know that LA isn’t a sanctuary city, in name or in spirit? Even if the city was a true sanctuary city with real protections, any Olympics on US soil poses huge risks for immigrants. That’s because #LA28 is designated a National Special Security Event (NSSE), which gives the Department of Homeland Security (ICE, CBP, NSA, all the bad dudes) the express ability to coordinate with local law enforcement. Sound like a terrible idea? It is! This week @nolympicsla are joined by members of the @dsa_la Immigration Justice Committee to discuss all the ways the current Democrat establishment in LA already fall short of their pseudo-progressive pro-immigrant messaging and how the NSSE – compounded with already wildly militarized local law enforcement – poses a nightmare for communities across the Southland. ‘Rings of Hell’ segment originally produced with @knockdotla: 11/8/18
On the PreSales Podcast, James Kaikis, Tanner Drake, and Dalton Fite connect on the topic "Building the Next Generation of PreSales". ROCK YOUR DREAMS!
...................................................................

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In this Archival Edition of Historically Thinking, we replay an episode that we think deserves another listen. After all, it's just about time for every would-be college undergraduate to get their application packets into the mail–if they haven't already applied for early admission–or study for their third taking of the SAT. Another reason for this blast from the past is that the National Survey of Student Engagement released its annual results twenty days ago, and we'd be remiss if we didn't tip our cyber hat to our favorite higher education survey. You say you don't know what NSSE is? That's why you should listen. The guest today is Mark Salisbury, Assistant Dean and Director of Assessment and Institutional Research at Augustana College. He and Al Zambone work backwards from where graduates of Augustana go and do–as opposed to what they imagined they would go and do–and how that ought to influence what prospective undergraduates should think about when they evaluate colleges. Of all our podcasts, we'd have to say that this is the one with the most news that you can use. Enjoy! Ken Steele pulls together the evidence for a growing majority of college and university students who are "invisible" part-time students -- registered full-time, for financial aid or other practical reasons, but in fact working as many as 34 hours a week. Now that the average Canadian's work week has declined to about 33 hours a week, these students are essentially working full-time, while registered as full-time students too. Whether because they need the income to survive financially, or they value work experience above all else, these students are inevitably cutting corners, cutting short their sleep and spending half the time on their studies that most universities claim to require. As more and more institutions use the NSSE (National Survey of Student Engagement) to measure student engagement on campus, it is clear that Canada's big urban universities are already at a significant disadvantage, perhaps in part because of broader participation and larger class sizes. Students who spend less time on their studies are, by NSSE's definition, less engaged students. Finally, just #ICYMI, we share clips from a recent video on Durham College's YouTube channel, about a cat named Odey who decides to enrol at Durham College to improve his life. Differenzverhältnisse: Gesellschaftliche Bedingungen von Erziehung und Bildung
The results of various studies suggest that the study time necessary to earn a BA has declined over the past few decades to the point where full-time university students need only treat their studies as a part-time commitment, and they can still obtain high grades and graduate. Data obtained and analysed by the author from the National Survey on Student Engagement (NSSE) show that on average Canadian and American students now spend 12-13 hours in out-of-class study and assignment completion, regardless of institutional type or size. With an addi- tional (maximum) 15 hours of in-class time, the average time spent on ‘higher education’ is less than 30 hours per week, not the 40 hours historically associated with a full-time commitment. These figures correspond with results from several European countries, most notably the UK, but other European countries still make greater study-time demands of their university students. The various ex- planations for the decline in student engagement are evaluated using the (above) NSSE data set, and other secondary analyses. It is concluded that the decline in student engagement is explainable in part in terms of the spread of mass higher education in a neoliberal era, whereby universities take on the characteristics of corporations that market themselves as vendors of credentials to student con- sumers, whose ‘satisfaction’ trumps educational standards. The further negative consequences of this trend are explored. James Côté is a Full Professor of Sociology at the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario, Canada) and regularly contributes to three fields of research: the sociology of youth, the social psychology of identity formation, and higher education studies.
