Over the course of our miniseries Exploding the Canon, Smarty Pants host Stephanie Bastek has examined Reed College students' efforts in 2016–2017 to fundamentally transform a mandatory freshman humanities course. Now, in the final episode, Bastek looks at how much has really changed since that time. The protestors were ostensibly successful—the Humanities 110 syllabus underwent significant revision. But though the college has bolstered several support programs for students of color, in the last decade Black, Latino, and Indigenous student enrollment at Reed has not increased. Some professors are satisfied with the current humanities program; others would like to see more change. Perhaps the fundamental lesson to be gained from Reed's upheaval is that the work is hardly finished—and a way forward might be found in how classicists have radically reimagined their discipline in recent years. Dr. C. Denise Okafor is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and of Chemistry at Pennsylvania State University. Many of the medications we take work by binding to a particular target and either turning off whatever is causing a problem or turning something on that is not working correctly. Denise's research examines how small molecules like drugs find and interact with the targets they are supposed to interact with. She is particularly interested in proteins that can be turned on or off by the small molecules/drugs that they bind with. While science is a large part of Denise's life, she also enjoys reading and writing fiction. Lately, she has been spending much of her free time with her kids, learning dances from Youtube videos and hanging out together. She received her B.S. in biomedical chemistry from Oral Roberts University and was awarded her M.S. in chemistry and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology. Afterwards, Denise was selected to complete an Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award from the NIH to conduct postdoctoral research at Emory University and teach at Morehouse and Spelman colleges in Atlanta. Denise has received a variety of awards and honors for her work, including a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface, an NSF CAREER Award for early investigators, and the NIH Director's New Innovator Award. In a captivating conversation, Eric Heilman, the executive director of CIRIS, explored the fascinating realm of institutional research (IR) within independent schools alongside the ATLIS co-hosts. The central focus of the discussion was data culture and its pivotal role in shaping decision-making processes within educational institutions. After sharing his backstory, Eric emphasized the critical importance of cultivating a data-driven culture within schools. He highlighted that the long-term success of an IR program is often more profoundly influenced by the school's prevailing culture than the technical expertise of the person spearheading it.During the conversation, the trio delved into an exciting new development—the imminent release (which is now available!) of a comprehensive guidebook designed to assist schools in launching their own institutional research programs. The guidebook covers a wide array of topics, including data strategy, data governance, and the intricate technical aspects of data analysis. Notably, the discussion touched upon the burgeoning influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in data analysis, particularly in the realm of automating the qualitative coding of open-ended survey responses.Data silos, a pervasive challenge in educational institutions, also came under scrutiny. The participants stressed the importance of breaking down these data silos and fostering collaboration through the establishment of data strategy committees.Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives were a hot topic during the conversation. Schools are increasingly focusing on tracking relevant data to inform their efforts in these areas, but they are also recognizing the need to protect sensitive data and maintain privacy. The conversation took an intriguing turn as the participants discussed how schools decide which questions to explore through their IR programs. They highlighted the necessity of involving the entire school community in the decision-making process to foster a constructive data culture. In the end, the podcast left listeners with a deeper understanding of the evolving landscape of institutional research and the pivotal role it plays in shaping the future of education.Resources mentioned on the showData-Informed Decision Making: A Guide to Institutional Research in Independent Schools https://ciris.maret.org/ciris-resources/community-resources/ciris-guidehttps://www.maret.org/about-us/institutional-researchConnect with Eric on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eric-heilman-8aa196163/Center for Institutional Research in Independent Schools (CIRIS) https://ciris.maret.org/Boomer the dog on Instagram (Eric's dog) @boomer.tha.berner https://www.instagram.com/boomer_the_berner/Listen, rate, and subscribe!

With the high cost of college, don't you wish you could pull back the curtain on college pricing to be sure you are getting their best offer for your teen? My guest, Mark Salisbury, created TuitionFit to gather information and put it into a “Kelly Bluebook” of college pricing. Whether your student is just starting to consider and visit colleges or they've already applied or even been excepted, the data Mark will provide you for free will help you know if you are getting a good deal or perhaps it's worth asking for a bigger discount. Mark gathers student profiles and financial award letters to create a data set with amazing benefits for your student and their family. Price transparency means you can get the best price for higher education, so I hope you listen to the episode!EPISODE NOTESDid you know that only 1 in 10 freshmen pays the advertised sticker price at their university? That is just one reason why my guest Mark Salisbury created TuitionFit, a crowdfunded data set built from about 20 thousand college award letters to date. He's seen too many small colleges with high sticker prices fail to get enough students despite giving discounts to everyone who applied. By letting families like yours know what you'll pay if your student gets into the schools they applied to, he hopes applying for college will become more like buying a house or car. After all, step number one in building a healthy college list should be figuring out your budget! TuitionFit receives actual student offer letters, hides the personal details, and then sorts the data based on the student's academic profile, award letter, and the name of the college. That data set allows your family to compare prices, and Mark revealed to me how most families who appealed for more financial aid received a more competitive offer, all because they now had power and agency as a consumer. Mark is joined by various independent college counselors, college search professionals, and access organizations, forming the TuitionFit Collaborative to help more students.Remember, you're the consumer when it comes to paying for college. You need information and price transparency to make wise and informed choices. Mark knows colleges build wiggle room into their pricing, and your family shouldn't have to pay more than you can afford or the college can afford to give you. Even if you're just thinking about colleges right now, TuitionFit can help you shop by price and build your preferred college list to get the best value for your money!Highlights Using college price transparency to build a college list with financial fit for your familyHow you can know what other students with a similar academic profile are paying for the same collegeTips for negotiating a better offer than a college offered you at admissionLearn how the free Tuition Fit tool works & how your family can benefitMeet Our GuestMark Salisbury is a nationally-renowned author, speaker, educator, and champion of college price transparency as a primary way to simplify and improve the college admissions process.  His work has been highlighted by the New York Times, Forbes, NBC, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and NPR.  In addition, he is a regular guest on a myriad of podcasts addressing college admissions and the higher education industry.  Mark earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and holds additional degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of Kansas.  Before launching the TuitionFit project (tuitionfit.org) to empower the public by crowdsourcing college price transparency, he was an Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Institutional Research at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, a Board member for the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium.Mark's experience in higher education spans a quarter century at both large and small c

College represents one of those backwards pursuits where buyers sell themselves to vendors before they even know the price of enrollment. Is the admissions process really disengaged from economic reality, or do applicants have more agency than they realize? Amy and Mike invited college cost advocate Mark Salisbury to share the finer points of negotiating a financial award letter. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What does a financial award letter look like? What are the different types of financial aid listed? Is the amount of aid awarded in a letter final? How and when should an applicant appeal to increase financial aid? Is there a downside to appealing an award letter? MEET OUR GUEST Dr. Mark Salisbury has spent 27 years in higher education. His first decade was as a soccer coach and admissions counselor. He then returned to school and earned a PhD in higher education at the University of Iowa, studying college student access and success as a researcher on the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education and a member of the Teagle Scholars.
