In episode 103 of White Canes Connect, Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein speak with Kat Bottner, the First Vice President of the Keystone Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania, a along with PhD candidates Abigail Nolin and Kayla Hepler from the University of Delaware's Department of Material Science and Engineering. They delve into their groundbreaking research on tactile aids aimed at enhancing accessibility for the visually impaired. The project, initiated through Kat's network connection and supported by a grant from the National Institute of Health, seeks to innovate beyond traditional raised bumps and lines used in Braille. Abigail and Kayla explain their focus on the material properties that affect touch perception, like surface roughness and chemistry, to create more advanced tactile stimuli. This could potentially revolutionize the accessibility of spatial information such as graphs, maps, and diagnostic tests. Kat's role as a consultant involves recruiting participants for the research and ensuring that their work remains user-focused. She also helps make the project's communication accessible, including braille labeling and proofreading. The research has shown promising results, with tests indicating that certain chemical coatings can be distinguished by touch, paving the way for new tactile aids. The team is excited about the potential applications, including more intuitive touchscreens and enhanced Braille displays, which could significantly improve the daily lives of the visually impaired by providing more detailed and accessible tactile information. Fox News reported that the University of Delaware received more than $6.7 million in secret Chinese donations, including direct funding from the Chinese government after President Biden set up a program there in his name. And the University of Pennsylvania, which runs the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., where there were classified documents, received millions from unnamed contributors in China and Hong Kong. Joining Larry Elder to discuss this is Paul Kamenar, lead counsel of National Legal and Policy Center. Last week, California Assemblyman Alex Lee introduced a bill in the California State Legislature that would impose an extra annual 1.5% tax on those with a “worldwide net worth” above $1 billion, starting as early as January 2024. What impact can California's wealth tax have in alleviating the state government's deficit? Joining Larry Elder to discuss this is Stephen Moore, an economist at the Heritage Foundation. Why Does California's population keep shrinking? In addition to excessive taxation, California's poor education system is also one of the contributing factors. According to a recent report, California now leads the country in illiteracy. To shed light on this issue, Larry Elder interviews Larry Sand, president of the California Teachers Empowerment Network. Well, we thought we were done with it, but it looks like we're going back to school. This time a little further away from home. Let's be honest, Delaware sounds like a really nice state; historic, nice topography, lots of ghosts. You know, it comes with the whole "being the first state in the country" thing; you're gonna have some spooky history. And with a university that's been around for almost 300 years (!) that statement still stands. There's been lots of claims of ghosts on this campus, but is it really haunted? Let's find out. The University of Delaware women's basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Hens won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title to earn an automatic bid and in the first round on Friday they will play Maryland in College Park. The Blue Hens are the #13-seed in the Spokane Region, Maryland is the #4-seed. Matt Leon caught up with Delaware head coach Natasha Adair to talk about her 24-7 squad before the game with Maryland at 5pm on Friday.
Greg Tarnavskyi and Vlad Krylov, roommates and students at the University of Delaware, joined Lisa Dent on Chicago’s Afternoon News to talk about their experience going to school while both their home countries go to war with each other. Chrissi Rawak joined Higher Ed Athletics to talk about leading the Blue Hens and begins the conversation with an institutional profile. Rawak had several different roles in college athletics and shares what made her decide to pursue an AD position. Rawak talks about the decision to create a chief of staff position at Delaware and advice for what other athletic directors might want to consider if they are thinking about creating a chief of staff role after doing some research of her own. The conversation then turns to the role of talent management and professional development of her staff and why investing in them is so critical to the success of the department. Rawak knew it was incredibly important to integrate with the university and explains how and why the athletic department decided to create an internship program with 12-16 interns each semester that goes towards their degree. I then ask Chrissi what it takes to be a successful fundraiser and how someone without fundraising experience, or nervous to make the ask, can do to improve (the worst thing that can happen is they say "No"). Keeping with the tactical advice in this episode, I asked Rawak her philosophy on hiring and evaluating head coaches and she shares her thoughts on internal promotions and why she understands coaches moving for other positions is sometimes okay. The conversation ends with a discussion on the athletic department being responsible for oversight of recreation and club sports at Delaware, and whether that might be a trend in the future at other institutions. 0:20 Institutional Profile 4:42 Deciding to Become an AD 9:52 Chief of Staff Positions in Athletics 17:40 Talent Management in College Athletics 22:54 Creating a Robust Internship Program 29:45 Growing to Love the Role of Fundraising 39:15 Head Coach Hire & Evaluation Strategies 47:22 Athletic Departments Supervising Recreation & Club Sports
