In this episode of English and Beyond, an intermediate-advanced English learning podcast, César and I explore the labyrinth that is British social etiquette. From a brutally honest, brutally Spanish flat inspection in Valencia to the fine-tuned overuse of “sorry” and “thank you” on the London Tube, we break down what it means to be “polite” in the UK.Is it all genuine kindness, or are Brits just world-class at passive-aggressive fakery? And how does that reconcile with the less-than-dignified behaviour of sunburnt Brits in Magaluf?Join us both as we tackle queuing etiquette, white lies, and the cultural clash of ordering a simple beer in a British pub. Packed with sharp observations, dry humour, and César's own Spanish-British perspective, this episode is a deep dive into why British politeness is both maddening and magnificent.Don't worry - listening won't require queuing. Unless you're living in Britain, in which case, feel free to line up out of habit. For a full and accurate transcript and additional learning resources, check out our website at the following link: morethanalanguage.com

We've dedicated ourselves to living our brand as we prepare to move the studio from Cheef's apartment, where his gay neighbor (geighbor, as it is) stomps around like Shrek all night, to JP's trailer. We're looking for a wrap sponsor so we can yank the thing around with Rob's Taco podcasting our high-brow humor in quaint bike towns across America. We also go in depth on whether or not it's possible to die choking on semen. (Guess what? It is, and it's reportedly happened.) Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Queuing theory: Benefits of operating at 70% capacity, published by ampdot on December 2, 2023 on LessWrong. Related to Slack. Related to Lean Manufacturing, aka JIT Manufacturing. TL;DR A successful task-based system should sometimes be idle, like 40% of worker ants. Doing tasks quickly is essential for producing value in many systems. For software teams, delivering a feature gives valuable insight into user needs, which can improve future feature quality. For supply chains, faster delivery releases capital for reinvestment. However, the relationship between capacity utilized and service time is exponential, as shown by the diagram below. A heuristic we can derive from queuing theory is that the optimal balance between efficiency and capacity typically occurs when the system is around 30-40% idle. For a single producer system, being X% idle is that producer being idle X% of the time. For a multi-producer system, being X% idle is X% of those producers being idle on average. This heuristic applies best to systems involving lots of discrete, oddly-shaped tasks. The linked post explains this theory in more detail, and gives examples of where queues appear in the real world. See also the Wikipedia article: Queueing theory is the mathematical study of waiting lines, or queues.[1] A queueing model is constructed so that queue lengths and waiting time can be predicted.[1] Queueing theory is generally considered a branch of operations research because the results are often used when making business decisions about the resources needed to provide a service. Pen Vogler is a food historian. Her latest book is Stuffed: A History of Good Food and Hard Times in Britain. Her previous books include work on food in the life and works of Dickens and Jane Austen - Dinner with Dickens: and Dinner with Mr Darcy.  In the podcast, Ben and Pen discuss various aspects of British culture and history we can learn from the British relationship with food. The discussion delves into several fascinating topics surrounding the transition from hunting-gathering societies to agricultural ones, the phenomenon of the commons and enclosures, the historical regulation of bread prices, and the impact of government intervention in food systems. The podcast also touches on the personal experiences of Pen in Czechoslovakia. Throughout the conversation, the overarching theme was how food, from its production to its consumption, is deeply entwined with historical, cultural, and social factors, and how understanding these dynamics can offer insights into present-day food-related challenges and culture. Highlights: Transition to Agriculture: The transition from hunting-gathering to agriculture, known as the Neolithic Revolution around 4200 BC, was gradual. Although humans began farming, hunting aided by dogs continued. Interestingly, there seemed to be a decrease in fish consumption even among communities near water, which may be tied to a new identity as agriculturalists. Strawberries: are they feminine and how have supermarkets made the strawberry market. The notion of strawberries being considered feminine was discussed, with a historical perspective of fruit consumption differing between genders. Supermarkets have popularized strawberries, making them a significant seasonal item. Queuing and Supermarkets: The change from traditional queuing at shops to self-service in supermarkets was discussed. This shift was initially due to labor shortages post-World War and was supported by the government. Sugar's Historical Significance: The historical transformation of sugar from a flavor enhancer to a replacement food was discussed. The early introduction of sugar into children's diets, driven in part by companies like Nestle, and its long-term health implications were also highlighted. Yorkshire Pudding and Meat Consumption: The tradition of Yorkshire pudding being used to fill up family members so the male head could consume more meat was discussed. This tradition reflects the historical gender and age hierarchies in food distribution within a family. Fish and Class Distinction: The class distinction between consuming different types of fish, such as salmon being associated with aristocracy while carp being considered a working-class fish, was discussed. The historical roots of these distinctions date back hundreds of years, and are intertwined with the broader themes of commons, enclosure, and social status. The discussion explores how fishing evolved with societal changes, particularly during the industrial era. Food Security and Import Dependency: The discussion touched on the UK's food security and its dependency on imports, which has fluctuated over centuries based on various social, economic, and political factors. Food Etiquette:  touch on traditional etiquette like the "posh" way of eating peas with a fork and how certain eating habits signify a person's social status. Overrated/Underrated Foods: Pen and Ben briefly discuss the perceived value of certain foods like tripe, gin, goose, and herring, and how these perceptions have evolved over time. Their conversation offers a rich tapestry of insights on how food, history, and culture are intricately woven together, and how exploring these connections can yield engaging narratives and a deeper understanding of societal norms and practices. In this week's podcast episode, Joanna is talking about how many people use this time of year to reflect on what they want for the new year or what they want their life to look like in the future.  So, why is it that although we keep saying what we want our life to be in the new year, we keep reliving the same patterns over and over again? She takes time today to explain what blocks you from experiencing an abundance of love, joy, and happiness. Here are this week's reflection questions:  What would your life be like if your mind was on a constant loudspeaker? What does it mean to shift your energy? How do you stay in the receptive mode when you are stuck in low-vibration feelings like anger, sadness, fear, regret, jealousy, guilt, or shame?

Today, Stacy, Robin, and Crystal unpack another five listener questions and scenarios that were originally sent in on Ask A Stupid Question Day back in September.Key Topics:“How do you work an area with residual odor?” (01:41)“My dog is a field-trained spaniel and is very good at nosework (lavender, eucalyptus, and anise) for Danish competition standards. Now we are following another program parallel to our nosework training to learn water search on cadaver scent. The search area is marked with markers (‘yellow balls'). They're floating on the surface of the water. My dog is overexcited over these, and the stimulus for these markers seem to overrule all search drive. Could you elaborate on what goes on inside of my dog and what solutions can overcome such a distraction?” (13:04)“How do you keep your classes fresh and fun?” (24:01)“What is the best way to catch oneself queuing the dog when solo training?” (35:11)“Do you have any tips for training AKC Buried Hides?” (46:11)Resources:K9 Detection Collaborative Episode 33: Stupid Question Day 2022K9 Detection Collaborative Episode 34: The Importance of Odor HygieneTiny Decisions AppWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Bill Zanetti is a consultant for the theme park industry, and teaches several theme park management courses at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. With a specialty in queuing theory, Bill seeks to improve the way that people move through theme parks and wait in line for attractions. In this interview, Bill discusses the difference between mandatory and voluntary queueing, and highlights instances where venues should focus on efficiency versus distractions. Bill believes that there is an optimal time for every attraction for how long the queue should be, meaning that having no wait is not always the most enjoyable experience. And when asked about the future of queueing, Bill believes that no matter what type of queue structure is in place - including standby lines, virtual queues, or expedited entry - every guest should have the opportunity to enjoy an attraction, regardless of when they arrived at the park or if they were able to obtain a virtual queuing position.
