For the next three episodes Tales of History and Imagination is going Hollywood, with three related - but separate Tales. In 1919, many of the folks who brought America Prohibition of alcohol turned their sights on a new ‘peril' - the Movie industry. These joyless wowsers were convinced Hollywood was an evil, decadent place that needed shutting down. Hollywood took these people seriously, and by 1934 had bound itself to a restrictive morality code. Why did they do so? For one, Tinseltown was rocked by a number of serious scandals in the 1920s. We're looking at three of the bigger ones in the following weeks, the Fatty Arbuckle case, the murder of William Desmond Taylor - and first, the story of Olive Thomas - Hollywood's first scandal. From flapper to femme fatale: Olive Thomas was the wild-living sex symbol of the jazz age and one of Hollywood's first starlets - but ended up dying in agony from poison in Paris Ritz 100 years ago. Suicide... or revenge of a jealous husband? Pamela Hutchinson, Film historian and critic specialising in silent cinema joins Jenni to discuss the story. The NHS in England employs more than a million women, who make up 77% of the workforce, but that is not reflected in its senior leadership. In 2016 a target was set of 50:50 women to men on NHS boards by 2020. This has been missed, but the figure has risen to 44.7%. The NHS Confederation estimates that another 150 women need to be recruited overall, with some trusts having much further to go than others. Jenni speaks to Sam Allen, Chief Executive of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Health and Care Women Leaders Network at the NHS Confederation, and Prof Ruth Sealy from Exeter University Business School, who authored the report. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under 35 in the UK (ONS figures). A new guide for parents who are really worried about their children has been put out by Papyrus, an organisation which aims to prevent suicide. It encourages parents who might be scared to talk to their children, to make sure they do. It’s been over five months since many of us sat in an office with a collective of colleagues. The work parties and special occasions are happening behind a screen. And more people than ever are thinking about permanently working from home. Is this well and truly the death of office relationships? And why do we love the idea of one so much in the first place? Anna Smith is a film critic and a host of the Girls On Film podcast. Ellen Scott is the Lifestyle Editor at the Metro UK. She met her partner at work four years ago.

Adam shares the tragic story of silent film star Olive Thomas, whose ghost haunts the landmark New Amsterdam Theater in New York City. John finally talks about the Great Purge of 2018. If you're not mad, you should be. This is dangerous stuff. Julian Assange says being forced to clean his cat's litter box is a violation of his fundamental rights. Some dutch guy "identifies" as twenty years younger - and wants to legally change his age. That giant flying rock might be an extraterrestrial probe. Or not. Or maybe it is. Or not.
The first Hollywood scandal to attract international attention was the death-by-poison of Olive Thomas, the twenty-five-year old star of au courant Hollywood hit The Flapper. According to Hollywood Babylon, Thomas’s death was the suicide of a woman desperate over her failure to score dope for her junkie husband. What’s the real story—and what role was played by Jack Pickford, Olive’s husband and the brother of the actress then considered “America’s Sweetheart”? Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 64: Ingeborg Skeel and Olive Thomas Inspired by the Women’s March, Noelle walks us through two strong women of different eras: Ingeborg Skeel of Denmark and the world’s first flapper, Olive Thomas. This story contains: 1. STORY ONE: 1500’s Lady Ingeborg Skeel from Voergaard, Denmark. (Bad ass business woman and philanthropist!) 2. Ingeborg was super successful and had sweet house. (So people thought she was a witch!) 3. A wandering lady in white, Wild Boar Skin, and a patch of blood that can’t be removed. (Ghosts!) 4. STORY TWO: Olive Thomas - the original flapper. (Married to Jack Pickford, brother of the movie star Mary Pickford.) 5. At age 25, Thomas drank down the mercury bichloride that was intended to treat her husband's syphilis topically! (She’s a ghost now. Hi, Olive!) Sweet Dreams XOXOZzzz.

We also re-visit a message from a listener who elaborates on a past email that was sent in to clear up some questions that were left unanswered, as well as the hometown haunting of Olive Thomas: an actress who is said to haunt the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York, NY.
Why does it seem like every single theater is haunted? We could really do a whole weekly podcast about this, but we settled on two specific Broadway theaters and the specters who reside there. First up, The New Amsterdam Theatre, haunted by a Ziegfeld Girl, and silent movie star, Olive Thomas. Next, The Palace Theatre, home of ghostly acrobats, and Judy Garland herself! A ghost haunts the New Amsterdam Theatre, near Times Square in New York. She wears a green outfit in flapper style, and she’s just a little annoyed to realize that no one is scared of her, even though she mostly rearranges the scenery rather than clanking chains or leaping out and scaring people. Her name is Olive Thomas, and she is one of the first silent movie stars, although her early death means that she is much less famous than her sister-in-law, Mary Pickford. Born near Pittsburgh, Olive moves to New York to escape a teen marriage and a life raised in poverty. After winning a contest as the Most Beautiful Girl in New York, she becomes an artist’s model before securing a position with Flo Ziegfeld, the mogul behind the Follies. Ziegfeld takes a shine to Olive, and soon she is not only dancing for him but has become a regular in the much racier Midnight Follies. Soon she and Ziegfeld are involved in an affair, but when Ziegfeld goes back to his wife, Olive takes off for Hollywood. In Santa Monica, she runs into Jack Pickford, Mary’s younger brother, and discovers her kindred spirit. To the great distress of his family, the two of them drink and party their way around movie sets on both coasts. Over the course of four years, Olive makes twenty films, including The Flapper—the film that introduced that term into the national lingo. Then she and Jack decide to vacation in Paris … The Forgotten Flapper: A Novel of Olive Thomas (Sepia Stories, 2015) brings this forgotten actress back to life. Laini Giles vividly captures both the culture of those early days when films were still called “flickers” and Olive Thomas’s complex, charming, and compelling personality. The ostrich scene alone is—dare we say it?—unforgettable. C. P. Lesley is the author of Legends of the Five Directions (The Golden Lynx, The Winged Horse, and, as of April 2016, The Swan Princess), a historical fiction series set in 1530s Russia, during the childhood of Ivan the Terrible. Yes, it's the Jazz Age of speakeasies and Prohibition -- and our tour guide is none other than the Theater Districts most famous resident ghost, sighted from time to time in the New Amsterdam Theater. Our guest, author Laini Giles, has written our ticket to one of Hollywood Land's very first scandal in The Forgotten Flapper: A Novel of Olive Thomas. You may not know Olive's name today, but a hundred years ago she was one of the loveliest girls who ever lit up the Ziegfeld Follies or the silent screen. Laini Giles' previous novel is Love Lies Bleeding. You can follow her on Twitter @4GottenFlapper and visit her online at LainiGiles.com. Laini is also happy to share some other Jazz Age books in this episode. They are Loving Frank, by Nancy Horan. Hollywood Babylon, by Kenneth Anger. Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin, by Marion Meade.
The story of silent film star Olive Thomas. *Note* It is mentioned that the house where Sharon Tate was murdered is the same house that William Desmond Taylor lived. This is not true and I am sorry for any confusion or anger this statement has caused. The podcast will endeavor to have no further mistakes in facts, only in delivery.

Show notes for Episode 19:“The Opposite of a Peace Sign” by James McManus, an excerpt from his book Cowboys Full: The Story of Poker (2009).I start the show with an excerpt from one of the later chapters in the new history of poker by James McManus (Positively Fifth Street). The chapter originally appeared as a column in the June 10, 2008 issue of Card Player magazine. This passage comes amid a discussion by McManus of some of the associations made over the years with the ace of spades. In particular, this excerpt focuses on how the card was “played” (so to speak) during the Vietnam Conflict.“Ace of Spades” by Motörhead (1980)Could not possibly have an episode with this title and not pay homage to Lemmy and his mates, could we? The lyrics:If you want to gamble, I tell you I'm your man.You win some, lose some -- it's all the same to me.The pleasure is to play, it makes no difference what you say.I don't share your greed, the only card I need isThe ace of spades, the ace of spades.Playing for the high one, dancing with the devil,Going with the flow -- it's all a game to me.Seven or eleven, snake eyes watching you.Double up or quit, double stakes or splits,The ace of spades, the ace of spades. You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools,But that's the way I like it baby,I don't wanna live forever. And don't forget the joker!Pushing up the ante, I know you've got to see me,Read 'em and weep -- the dead man's hand again.I see it in your eyes, take one look and die.The only thing you see, you know it's gonna beThe ace of spades, the ace of spades.“Fatal Ace of Spades,” Nick Harris Detective, July 15, 1938There is not a lot of information out there regarding this show.
