BEAUTY AND THE BEAST COMPOSER: Alan Menken LYRICIST: Howard Ashman, Tim Rice BOOK: Linda Woolverton SOURCE: Disney's animated film Beauty and The Beast (1991) DIRECTOR: Robert Jess Roth CHOREOGRAPHER: Matt West PRINCIPLE CAST: Gary Beach (Lumiere), Susan Egan (Belle), Terrence Mann (Beast) OPENING DATE: Apr 18, 1994 CLOSING DATE: Jul 29, 2007 PERFORMANCES: 5,462 SYNOPSIS: Belle is a young girl who stumbles into a castle and is kept captive by its owner, a monster who was once a prince. Along with his staff, once humans now physical objects due to a witch's curse, Belle will try to teach the Beast to love again before the Prince permanently stays as a monster. This episode traces the way musical theatre artists Alan Menken and Howard Ashman reinvigorated the mass-appeal of Disney's animated films, which in turn lead to a profitable pipeline between the children's media conglomerate and New York City, beginning with a stage adaptation of the animated box office hit, Beauty and the Beast. The planned 1994 opening of Beauty and the Beast at the Palace Theatre directly influenced Mayor Rudy Giuliani's prioritization of the commercial cleansing of Times Square, Disney's exclusive access to the newly-renovated New Amsterdam Theatre, and the creation of Disney Theatrical Productions, which continues to adapt Disney films for the stage. Though critically panned, Eden Hildebrand demonstrates how the musical signaled a new age for Broadway's reliance on spectacle, a future for family-friendly tourist entertainment, and a new definition of robust merchandising presence in the commercial theatre. Eden Hildebrand is a Canadian performer, choreographer, director, and pedagogue. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University, and both a Bachelor of Arts in Dance (with a concentration in Choreography and Performance) and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Calgary. MARCIA MILGROM DODGE's work as a director & choreographer has been seen throughout the United States, in Canada, England, Asia, Denmark and the Middle East, in theatres on Broadway, Off-Broadway, at acclaimed regional theatres such as the New York City Opera, John F. Evan Ruggiero began dancing at the age of five in his hometown studio and by age ten, he was accepted into the famed New Jersey Tap Ensemble. Upon entering his sophomore year at Montclair State University while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre, Evan was suddenly diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer of the right leg. Enduring nine surgeries in a six-month period in an effort to save the leg, the cancer returned more aggressively than the original diagnosis. He was faced with the ultimate decision of amputation in order to stop the cancer and save his life, as well as undergoing chemotherapy for sixteen months. Eighteen months after the amputation, and only two days after receiving his “peg-leg”, Evan was tapping again. SOURCES Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical, Original Cast Recording. Weltkrieg. Es liest Paula Leu.

Along the way, he is given a tour of Walt Disney Studios, and learns about the animation process.○ According to supplemental information on the DVD this film was rushed into production to help keep the studio solvent. The start of WW2 closed Europe to American movies and this cut off much needed revenue for Disney. When it was released it did save the studio but it was not well received and was heavily criticized by the public who were expecting a full animated feature.○ Features How to Ride a Horse (1950), the first of the Goofy "How-to" cartoons. When narrator John McLeish was brought in to record the narration, he was asked to read it in a very straightforward manner, as if for a serious documentary about horse riding. He was shocked when he was told that the narration he recorded would be used in a Goofy cartoon.○ In the sound effects department the workers are creating sound effects for a piece of film with the train Casey Junior. Casey would pop up in Disney's next film, Dumbo (1941). Likewise in the art department, the animators are making sketches for "Dumbo". Bambi also makes a minor appearance in this film, a year before Bambi (1942) was released.○ Most of the 'animators' shown in the film were actually actors hired to portray animators. And this film, showing the Disney animation studios as a happy, coherent family, was released at the worst possible moment, when half of the actual animators went out on strike. The strikers frequently picketed theaters showing the film, sometimes holding up a large cardboard sign depicting Walt Disney as a dragon, labeled 'The Reluctant Disney.'○ Maquettes in the model department include Jiminy Cricket and the drunk cuckoo clock from Pinocchio (1940), characters from Fantasia (1940) including Chernabog, a black centaurette that Robert Benchley takes with him, and the Knight from The Reluctant Dragon (1941).○ In the "Baby Weems" sequence, Mount Rushmore is seen with only George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The faces were still under construction until October 1941 and this movie was released before it was finished, which is why Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson are missing.● Segment: This week in Disney history “Once Upon a Time”○ March 20th 2014 – Aladdin the stage musical opens on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre.○ March 22nd 2018 Frozen The Broadway Musical opens at the St. James Theatre.● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ Toy Story 4 Trailer Release○ Thoughts on the 21st Century Fox Purchase■ Disney has 60% stake in Hulu○ Captain Marvel News■ 18th highest Opening Weekend film after Rogue One.■ Number one at the Box office 2 weekends in a row■ In its opening weekend, Marvel Studios' "Captain Marvel" made $153 million in North America and $455 million worldwide. On Episode 13, Marie has her friend, Brendan Murphy, on the show to tell the story of a visitation dream from his grandfather, and an item that his mom found after her dad passed away. Marie tells her of her sister's encounter with a ghost that took on the appearance of their mother. We also re-visit a message from a listener who elaborates on a past email that was sent in to clear up some questions that were left unanswered, as well as the hometown haunting of Olive Thomas: an actress who is said to haunt the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York, NY.
Ever since the early 1900s, the New Amsterdam Theatre, located on 42nd street in New York City, has been the home of Disney On Broadway. However, this historic theatre had a long life before housing some of Disney's biggest hits including THE LION KING, MARY POPPINS and currently ALADDIN, this historic theatre. For this episode, we'll speak with two members of the operations team: Chris Pappas and Dana Amendola, about the theatre's early years–from its construction up through the historic Ziegfeld Follies.
Why does it seem like every single theater is haunted? We could really do a whole weekly podcast about this, but we settled on two specific Broadway theaters and the specters who reside there. First up, The New Amsterdam Theatre, haunted by a Ziegfeld Girl, and silent movie star, Olive Thomas. Next, The Palace Theatre, home of ghostly acrobats, and Judy Garland herself! A ghost haunts the New Amsterdam Theatre, near Times Square in New York. She wears a green outfit in flapper style, and she’s just a little annoyed to realize that no one is scared of her, even though she mostly rearranges the scenery rather than clanking chains or leaping out and scaring people. Her name is Olive Thomas, and she is one of the first silent movie stars, although her early death means that she is much less famous than her sister-in-law, Mary Pickford. Born near Pittsburgh, Olive moves to New York to escape a teen marriage and a life raised in poverty. After winning a contest as the Most Beautiful Girl in New York, she becomes an artist’s model before securing a position with Flo Ziegfeld, the mogul behind the Follies. Ziegfeld takes a shine to Olive, and soon she is not only dancing for him but has become a regular in the much racier Midnight Follies. Soon she and Ziegfeld are involved in an affair, but when Ziegfeld goes back to his wife, Olive takes off for Hollywood. In Santa Monica, she runs into Jack Pickford, Mary’s younger brother, and discovers her kindred spirit. To the great distress of his family, the two of them drink and party their way around movie sets on both coasts. Over the course of four years, Olive makes twenty films, including The Flapper—the film that introduced that term into the national lingo. Then she and Jack decide to vacation in Paris … The Forgotten Flapper: A Novel of Olive Thomas (Sepia Stories, 2015) brings this forgotten actress back to life. Laini Giles vividly captures both the culture of those early days when films were still called “flickers” and Olive Thomas’s complex, charming, and compelling personality. The ostrich scene alone is—dare we say it?—unforgettable. C. P. Lesley is the author of Legends of the Five Directions (The Golden Lynx, The Winged Horse, and, as of April 2016, The Swan Princess), a historical fiction series set in 1530s Russia, during the childhood of Ivan the Terrible. Directing Green: On October 1, 2012, Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation in partnership with Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) held a conversation entitled Directing Green at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York. Director/Choreographer John Carrafa, SDC's representative to BGA, led this discussion, which starts with Allen Hershkowitz, Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), describing the state of the global environment and the critical role the entertainment industry can play in adopting better practices. He emphasizes that taking even a small step towards better practices makes a difference. After this accessible overview, some of those leading a more environmentally-friendly theatre working on Broadway in diverse fields - Lighting Designer James Bedell, Costume Designer Andrea Lauer, Scenic Designer Donyale Werle, Stage Manager Marjorie Horne, and Bob Usdin, Owner of Showman Fabricators, give insight into the ways that they are taking the environment into account without compromising their art form. By listening to this conversation, artists can discover questions to ask collaborators in pre-production, learn practical methods of conserving resources in rehearsal and tech, and understand why better environmental practices are essential for artists working today.
