Based on the influential Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei, Golden Lotus was developed in North America before premiering in Hong Kong in 2014 where it was filmed live. It's now available to stream on Stratfest at Home. Learn about the banned novel Jin Ping Mei, the fascinating international story behind the development of Golden Lotus, how the show became Hong Kong's first original musical, the process of filming, and the surprising rewards of entering the capture of the musical into film festivals. George Chiang is the acclaimed writer of Golden Lotus, winner of the Heckler's Award for Best Original Work in Hong Kong. The feature film adaptation of Golden Lotus has secured over 60 international film awards, including Best Picture at the World Independent Cinema Awards in Edinburgh.     Host Luisa Lyons chats with Sam Boer, co-founder of The Uncommon Folk Collective and one of the composers behind Ursa: A Folk Musical, a theatre-concert hybrid that received its world premier in 2022 as part of the Toronto Fringe NextStage Festival. In this episode, learn about learn about the Uncommon Folk Collective, and delve into the process of developing Ursa: A Folk Musical. Hear about the daunting process of filming the musical for the Toronto Fringe NextStage Festival, and the importance of funding and recording new musicals. Sam Boer is a musician, writer, and theatre practitioner. He and Jake Schindler co-founded The Uncommon Folk Collective: a group dedicated to crafting music-forward theatre experiences. Their first original show, Ursa: A Folk Musical, was praised by The Guardian as a "winning, foot-tapping account of grizzly adolescence" and has been presented through the Toronto Fringe's NextStage Festival, the Stratford Festival's online streaming platform, the Kingston Grand Theatre, and Tweed & Company Theatre. Sam also records off-kilter folk music under the name Samson Wrote.     Host Luisa Lyons chats with Doug Reside, curator of the Billy Rose Theatre Division at the New York Public Library and author of Fixing the Musical: How Technology Shaped the Broadway Repertory, which looks at how the musicals that we remember, and the ones that are  the most performed, are the musicals that were able to use the technologies of their time such as cast recordings, sheet music, and video, to document and share the work with those who would never see the original production on stage.Doug shares his background in English and Computer Science, the challenges of preserving theatre history and the challenges of digital preservation, and we dive into his book Fixing the Musical and the fascinating history behind filming Broadway for public distribution, what needs to happen to make film recordings as ubiquitous as cast recordings, and how you can access the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive at the New York Public Library! Doug Reside is the Curator of the Billy Rose Theatre Division at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and manages all aspects of the division's collections and public services. He joined NYPL in 2011 first as the digital curator for the performing arts before assuming his current position in 2014. Prior to joining NYPL, Reside served on the directorial staff of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities at the University of Maryland. The musical tells the story of when Alex's college boyfriend moved across the country and her Lola (grandmother) showed her a grocery bag filled with hundreds of love letters from Alex's grandfather.Alex shares how her Lola inspired not only the show but Alex's love of musical theatre, her unique vocal approach to writing her one woman show, the development of the show, and the process of performing in the She NYC Arts Summer Theater Festival.Alexandra Palting is an actor and writer based in New York City. She is the performer, writer, lyricist and co-composer of 0874: A Filipino-American Love Story, a one-woman musical that tells the story of her grandparents' courtship and immigration to the United States. Prior to joining the MTC team, Joe received national recognition for his work in building young, diverse, and national audiences for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis during his tenure as director of marketing and public relations – and for expanding OTSL's civic footprint as the producer of the company's Opera Tastings series, through artist community tours, and the creation and growth of its Engagement + Inclusion Task Force. His career has also included roles with the American Repertory Theater, the Alliance Theater, and 7 Stages, and consulting projects for the National Blues Museum, the Utah Symphony, and the documentary film Flint: The Poisoning of an American City. He has directed over two dozen professional or university productions, including regional premieres by David Mamet, Caryl Churchill, and others. ProEnglish Theatre is an independent theatre based in Kyiv, Ukraine. More info and tickets at Eventive. Laura Kay Clark is a New York City-based actress, singer, writer, content creator, and puppeteer. Originally from Ohio, Laura moved to New York in 2013 to attend the prestigious Actors Studio Drama School, where she obtained her MFA in Acting in 2016. Laura has performed in a variety of plays and musicals in the NYC area, and has found a lot of fulfillment creating her own work. In 2016, she premiered her one woman show, I Kissed Your Boyfriend: Another Feminist Rant, off-Broadway at the United Solo Theatre Festival. Laura created, wrote, produced, and starred in the family-friendly puppet series Petunia's Playhouse, which has been sweeping festivals and has won several honors, including Best Web Series at the NYC International Fringe Festival. Laura recently adapted Petunia's Playhouse for the stage with composer Billy Recce. Laura co-founded the independent production company Party Claw Productions with NYC Artist Ashley Kristeen Vega, and their inaugural film Wide Eyed has gained recognition at several film festivals. Laura infuses all of her work with authenticity and humor. She hopes to end the stigma surrounding mental health and promote body positivity and inclusiveness in all of her work.
