First things first: Claire and Erica have quick updates on the competitive alpaca scene and the conclusion of The Great HDVB Shortage of 2018. "A Him gets noticed. A Her gets ignored. And for once, we’d like to be ignored." Steven Soderbergh never wanted to return to the helm for the Ocean’s franchise, but he was more than happy to get behind any future films, so when Warner Bros. said they wanted to return to the franchise with an all-woman cast in a spin-off, he signed on board as producer. Gary Ross and Olivia Milch were hired to write the script and Ross to direct, and with that, Ocean’s Eight was born. But will Ross and Milch be able to capture the fun and unbelievable heists that Soderbergh did in his original trilogy? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we aim to find out as we wrap up the Ocean’s series with Ross’ 2018 film Ocean’s Eight. We talk about how this film fits in the franchise and how well it works as part of that universe. We look at the struggles we have with the story and particular elements of the heist, which is particularly frustrating because we largely love the characters so much. We discuss the actresses playing the team, from Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett through to Awkwafina and Rihanna, and look at what they’re each bringing to the table. We debate if Helena Bonham Carter is playing too many crazy roles but revel in what she’s doing here. We try to figure out if this was an original script or based on a different property. And we go through what Ross is doing here as director and wonder if he’s just not bringing enough fun to the film, which is already struggling with a weaker script and diminishing what Soderbergh had created. It’s still a fun film and feels a part of the franchise, even if it’s a blander entry. That being said, we have a great conversation about it so check it out then tune in! Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 81 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Kai Yaniz tie up some loose Riverdale ends with their brief review of the 2001 cult comedy Josie and the Pussycats, based on the Archie Comics title. Then it's into more serious matters, as they address the disparity in the audience and critical response to women and POC in studio films. From Ocean's 8 to Ghostbusters, female-led releases in particular have proved divisive among some moviegoers. In fact, actresses like Ghostbusters' Leslie Jones and Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Kelly Marie Tran have personally been the subject of online harassment and assorted vitriol. So let's dig into one of Hollywood's most common criticisms nowadays, namely its stubbornness to accept diversity both onscreen and behind the scenes. Recent films like Wonder Woman and Black Panther have demonstrated strides forward, but there's still much progress to be made. Listen in as we chat about how we can all move forward together. Ocean's 8 synopsis courtesy of Warner Bros.: Five years, eight months, 12 days...and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock)—just released from prison—has been concocting the greatest heist of her storied career. She knows what it’s going to take—a team of the best in their field, starting with her former partner-in-crime Lou (Cate Blanchett). Together, they recruit a crew of specialists: jeweler Amita (Kaling); street con Constance (Awkwafina); expert fence Tammy (Paulson); hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna); and fashion designer Rose Weil (Bonham Carter). The target is $150 million in diamonds—diamonds that will adorn the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger (Hathaway), who will be center stage at the event of the year, the Met Gala. Their plan appears rock solid, but it will need to be flawless if the team is to get in and get away—all in plain sight. “Ocean’s 8” also stars Richard Armitage as Claude Becker, Kluger’s unwitting date at the Gala, and James Corden as John Frazier, an insurance investigator trying to put the pieces together. Gary Ross (“Seabiscuit,” “The Hunger Games,” “Pleasantville”) directed “Ocean’s 8” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Olivia Milch, original story by Ross. Steven Soderbergh and Susan Ekins produced the film. Michael Tadross, Diana Alvarez, Jesse Ehrman and Bruce Berman served as executive producers, with Milch co-producing. We take a dive into the history and psychology of women robbers, the ones out there in the real world and also the ones on the big screen in the form of “Ocean’s 8,” which hits theaters this month. We sat down with Olivia Milch, the film’s co-writer and co-producer, to ask what’s up with all the remakes and what it will take for women to have their own original blockbusters. Also, how new tariffs affect the U.S.’s credibility with our trading partners, biased language in job listings and a story of solar power in Puerto Rico. Plus, what is FIFA’s role in promoting LGBT rights as the World Cup heads to Russia this month? (06/01/2018)
On this week’s episode, we’ll hear from the creators behind the upcoming comedy heist film Ocean’s 8. Screenwriters Olivia Milch and Gary Ross discuss spinning-off a popular franchise and approaching the heist genre from a new perspective. And later, we’ll hear from King of the Hill writer and Bob’s Burgers’ co-developer Jim Dauterive on writing for animation and how characters develop over a series lifetime. Ocean’s 8 is an upcoming comedy heist film that remixes Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 trilogy. The film brings a unique perspective to the genre by featuring an all-star, all female team. The idea for the film was created by four-time Academy Award® nominated writer/director Gary Ross. Ross co-wrote the comedy classic Big, and went on to write and direct Pleasantville, Seabiscut, The Hunger Games, and 2016’s Free State of Jones. Ross co-wrote the Ocean’s 8 screenplay with filmmaker Olivia Milch, who has made a name for herself by writing stories that authentically represent the female experience. Earlier this year she released her directorial debut, Dude, on Netflix. Next up, we’ll hear from Jim Dauterive who started his career as one of the original writers for the award-winning animated comedy King of the Hill which ran for 13 seasons on the Fox network. The series won two Emmy Awards and was named one of the 100 greatest television shows of all time in 2007. Dauterive currently serves as the executive producer of the popular animated Fox television series Bob’s Burgers, which he co-developed with Loren Bouchard. I spoke with Dauterive at Texas State University at an event put on by Austin Film Festival and The Wittliff Collections.
