This week, we're celebrating Pride with the movie that brought the drag queen road trip genre to America! Hot on the high heels of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert from 1994 Australia comes this 1995 American release starring Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo. When their car breaks down in small-town Nebraska, three drag queens must win the hearts and minds of the local townsfolk while evading a bigoted sheriff. With supporting turns by Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Chris Penn, Arliss Howard, and cameos by RuPaul, Naomi Campbell, Robin Williams, and the titular statuesque actress herself, the film opened at number one at the box office and is considered groundbreaking for being the first mainstream Hollywood production to depict drag queens. Along with RuPaul's popularity, the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, and the aforementioned Priscila, interest in drag drove audiences to the cinema. Critics, however, were less enthused, but Swayze and Leguizamo were both nominated for Golden Globes, and the film has, of course, endured as an icon of queer cinema. Now the four of us are piling into a yellow convertible 1967 Cadillac DeVille with an autographed copy of the improbably titled To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar to see what in gay hell is going on!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com    You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Please subscribe and give us a positive review. In July 1988, Washington, North Carolina businessman Leith Von Stein was fatally stabbed and bludgeoned in his bed while his wife, Bonnie, was severely injured. The violent crime was initially staged as a burglary but later exposed a twisted conspiracy motivated by a $2 million inheritance. The chilling true-crime story was famously chronicled in the 1991 bestselling book Cruel Doubt by Joe McGinniss. Cruel Doubt was adapted into a highly rated, two-part television miniseries that premiered on NBC in May 1992 starring Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow.Sources:Cruel Doubt by Joe McGuinessBlood Relatives: Death is in the Air https://finishedpages.com/from-patriarch-to-the-small-screen-the-north-carolina-murder-of-leigh-von-stein/https://www.orlandosentinel.com/1991/11/17/two-very-different-tellings-of-the-same-crime/http://www.theescapist.com/archive-pritchard01.htmhttps://law.justia.com/cases/north-carolina/supreme-court/1992/89a90-0.html

Movie reviews #51
seven today so let's go
1. Airport 1970. This one started them all. To me it's just a less funny movie than airplane movie, but still funny. You don't get the icky pedophile jokes, but you do get asshat men who live to cheat and cheat to live, this had a nice rad woman surprise that I am quite grateful for. Airport stars Helen Hayes!!!!
2. Scarecrow 1972. Many many 70's films are based on plays, this one basically just filmed a play. Great Black Metal premise here with a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet letter guy. Blythe Danner, and Gene Wilder are here, and there's a witch too.
3. Earthquake 1974. Heston is here, this movie was not great. I had fun with friends, a lot actually. Heston is a shit but the Star Crash guy takes on bullies, and flippin Shaft is a rad stunt cyclist.
4. The Little prince 1974. This one's trippy and fun, and we get our 2nd Gene Wilder appearance in this batch. You also get jazz hands Bob Fosse himself here as the snake. I always get this movie confused with the Gumby episode The Small Planets, and wonder where the screaming clay piano boy is.
5. Girlfriends 1978. Claudia Weill is our director here, in a coming of age film that should be more popular than it is, shrug emoji. We get the sole survivor woman from that trippy movie I love called Sole Survivor. Lots of great actors here including the guy who wrote Stonehenge.
6. Sergeant Matlovich vs. the U.S. AirForce. This gets added to our list of super amazing made for TV movies of the 70's, also Matlovich was real and fierce AF. Brad Dourif plays Leonard Mattlovich, and you can watch him and his mustache in this gem on you tube. A must see for those interested in Queer history.
7. …And your name is Jonah 1979. Intense TV Movie about a misdiagnosed Jonah, he is deaf and the shitty times and an even shittier Teacher and Dad make it flippin hell for this poor kiddo. Important to show where we were and where we should be with this country's Ableism. Sally Struthers is here along with the asshat Dad played by asshat James Woods. Thanks fer listening friends. Please oh please give us stars and a review, thank you.

Meet the Fockers is a 2004 romantic comedy directed by Jay Roach, Jay also directed the original Meet the Parents, as well as Dinner for Schmucks, The Austin Powers series. Meet the Fockers is the sequel to Meet the Parents, we have Greg or ‘Gaylord' Focker played by Ben Stiller. Greg is engaged to Pam Byrnes played by Teri Polo, the contents of the first film was Greg meeting Pam's parents Jack Byrnes played by Robert De Niro and Dina played by Blythe Danner. The short of that story is that Jack is a retired CIA agent and did everything he could do disrupt, undermine and ultimately break up Greg and Pam before finally agreeing that Greg was indeed a good guy and a good match. In Meet the Fockers, this story in some ways repeats with Jack and Dina meeting Greg's parents Bernie and Roz played by Dustin Hoffman and Barabara Streisand. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

sincere apologies for the plethora of engineering errors on this week's program --- I've been up very late the last several nights trying to locate the second episode of "Tattingers" (1988) in which Stephen Collins' titular character tangles with a young provocateur quite obviously based on Peter Missing. While I remember this (awful) episode quite vividly, I've not been able to find the footage on any of the streaming services (I did, however, learn that MUBI and Tubi are two entirely different platforms, so there's that) or in the darkest corners of the internet. What's wrong with Larry Abbot?  The radio star is having bouts of fear, perhaps a remnant of childhood trauma.  Otherwise, everything seems to be swell:  he's engaged to be married to his scene partner, the delightful Vickie Pearle.  But the radio show, hosted by the Manhattan Mystery Theater and lead sponsor Ralston-Purina are concerned about Larry's mental health, so they've hired Larry's Uncle Paul, a psychiatrist. to employ a radical cure that will rid Larry of his fears in no more than 36 hours.  And off go Larry and Vickie to Larry's ancestral stomping grounds, a palatial estate that bears a striking resemblance to, well, let's just say we've seen it before.  Just like the Abbot family butler, Pfister, and the maid, the diminutive Rachel – there's something familiar about them as well.  What's new are the cast of characters that assemble at the estate for Larry and Vickie's wedding – Larry's cousins Charles, Nora, Susan, and Francis Jr., all of whom seem to have ulterior motives of one kind of another, some of which may include death or inheriting the fortune of the family matriarch, Aunt Kate.  Will Larry and Vickie make it through the next couple days intact?  Will we, the audience, figure out what's really going on?  Maybe so, but we'll have to sit through all 82 minutes of this film to find out. The other members of Matt's band Rural Route Nine join the show for a classic two-movie Load Bearing Beams therapy session. Wade Hymel triumphantly returns to the show to convince the gang of the merits of the 2000 Ben Stiller/Robert DeNiro comedy Meet the Parents, while Patrick Perot presents The Blair Witch Project (1999) for consideration. We discuss the history of found footage horror movies, being fooled into thinking The Blair Witch Project was real back in 1999, whether it's possible to make any sense of the Blair Witch lore, and whether any good horror movies were made in the 2000s. That plus an extensive discussion of the obscure low-budget Meet the Parents from 1992 on which the Ben Stiller film was based, the smokiness of Blythe Danner, and why this movie really should have been a romantic comedy about Greg Focker and Jack Byrnes falling in love with each other. As I come from a two decade run of working in the movies, chord of nostalgia is plucked in me when I get to have an entertainment writer on the show, in TV nonetheless, which I could never break into. Nick Morton co-wrote the first season of “Cooper's Bar” for AMC which stars Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul and she has a 2022 Emmy nom from his writing. He is also a movie producer… remember that gorgeous film Ray with Jamie Foxx? Join us as we talk about how Nick approaches writing, and what have been some of his favorite Hollywood experiences. He shares the feeling of being in the gray area for a while when developing movies for a prestigious company, which led him to do some of his worst drinking. Now a sober writer, he was able to take his life experiences and put them into a show on a sober recovery house coming out soon on Crackle. The show stars Matthew Lillard and Blythe Danner. He has written for many online magazines including Mr. Porter and The Scoop. He hosts the popular podcast The Drunkalogues. John Searles is the best-selling author of the novels Her Last Affair, Help for the Haunted, Strange but True and Boy Still Missing.  Hailed as “riveting” by The New York Times and “hypnotic” by Entertainment Weekly, Boy Still Missing inspired Time magazine to name him a “Person to Watch,” and the New York Daily News to name him a “New Yorker to Watch.” His second novel, Strange but True was praised as “sinister and complex” by Janet Maslin of The New York Times, “extraordinary” by Publishers Weekly, and was named best novel of the year by Salon. Help for the Haunted was named a Boston Globe Best Crime Novel of the Year, an Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Must List, and won the American Library Association's Alex Award. John's most recent novel, Her Last Affair, was named a Best New Book by People magazine and praised as "a tense, intricately woven tale of heartbreak, retribution and redemption" by Publishers Weekly and "a twisted thriller that explores despair and loneliness with cinematic flair" by Kirkus Reviews. In 2019, Strange But True was adapted for film by the producers of La La Land and released in theaters nationwide by Lionsgate. Now streaming on HBOMax and Amazon Prime, the film stars the award-winning ensemble cast of Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear, Brian Cox, Blythe Danner, Nick Robinson and Margaret Qualley. The movie was praised as “suspenseful and haunting” by The Hollywood Reporter and “a twisty tale of tragic secrets” by the Los Angeles Times.  John has appeared regularly on morning programs like NBC's Today Show, CBS This Morning, Live! With Regis & Kelly, NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross and CNN to discuss his books.  For 23 years, John was the books editor of Cosmopolitan, also serving as the magazine's brand director, executive editor, and editor-at-large.  His personal and travel essays, book and restaurant reviews have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post and numerous other magazines, newspapers and websites.
