Mike Irish, Owner of Emmy's Spaghetti Shack (S7E15)

Mike Irish is his actual name. Welcome to my episode with the current (it no longer works to say “new”) owner of one of my favorite places in San Francisco—Emmy's Spaghetti Shack. I'm not sure where to begin, but I suppose a sprinkle of backstory can't hurt. Back in 2022, I recorded an episode with Emmy Kaplan, then the owner and forever the founder of Emmy's. It was a fun interview, and through that chat with Emmy, we discovered that we had been across-the-street neighbors in the Mission back in the early 2000s. Fast-forward to summer 2024 when I applied to be on KQED's Check Please! Bay Area and rated Emmy's as my No. 1 pick among the three spots I proposed. Then a funny thing happened—before we shot the Check Please episode, Emmy sold her restaurant to one of the bartenders at the place—Mike Irish. That brings us to this episode. From the first time Erin and I met Mike at the bar at Emmy's, I knew I liked the dude. Now let's get to know Mike together as he approaches the one-year mark of owning his first restaurant, an SF institution. Mike was born in Houston, but he didn't stay there long. His dad ran catering trucks for restaurants, and soon moved around bit before settling in Arizona, in the Phoenix area, where Mike mostly grew up. He came of age in the late-Nineties/early 2000s. Being in Arizona, Mike tells us some of the things about life there that he just considered normal, things like wearing oven mitts to get into your car in the summer. It was hot, but swimming pools were easy to find. Sports was pretty central to young Mike's life. He played basketball, baseball, soccer, and other sports. His dad coached some of the teams he was on. He was a good kid. Basketball took over, eventually. He looked up to local players, especially Charles Barkley, whose number Mike shaved into his head. But after a couple years playing in high school, basketball started to fade and was replaced by theater and drama. Looking back, he calls it a “hard turn,” but we both recognize the plasticity of that age—the teen years. In his drama classes, Mike gravitated toward writing. He played guitar and wrote songs. He wrote a play for his school. All that young talent and creativity led to Mike and his friends making movies. He was also in bands playing mostly folk music. With all this going on, he met his first girlfriend. They dated briefly, didn't talk for 20 years years, and today are married. But we'll get to that later. Mike graduated from high school and went to New York City for college pretty much right away. He had visited NYC once before and liked it. He got into film school there, beginning a journey that lasted until three years ago or so. And so, for nearly 20 years, Mike Irish existed as a filmmaker in New York City. The school and his place were both in Manhattan. When he first arrived, he knew one guy from a band they'd both been in, and Mike was grateful for that. But of course they didn't become close in their new hometown, as they attended different schools and made new friends. Mike made student films, and kept going after he graduated. To survive and pay rent, he started bartending, something that, later in life, would prove crucial to where he is today. I ask him to name-drop some of the bars in New York where he worked. He rattles off several, then summarizes by saying he worked at possibly 50 different sports in NYC. We talk about the films he made over that almost two-decade span. Some won awards, both domestically and internationally. The most highly acclaimed of his movies was The Life of Significant Soil, which Mike says he's seen being played on airplanes. Another movie, Permanent Collection, premiered in San Francisco at the Roxie. Mike came out here for that and stayed for a week. That was February 2020, weeks before COVID shut The City and the world down. Going back to his first girlfriend, whom Mike had met in high school, she already lived in San Francisco. They had lost touch over the years. But she noticed his name on a movie showing at The Roxie and came out to the premiere. A reconnection was made, but Mike returned home to New York after that week. Still, the two kept in touch. Once it was possible, one would fly out to be with the other, either in New York or here in San Francisco. That eventually gave way to Mike's decision to move to The City. Check back next week for Part 2 and the conclusion of our episode about Mike Irish. We recorded this podcast at Emmy's Spaghetti Shack in the Mission in April 2025. Photography by Jeff Hunt

Extraordinary Creatives
Rejecting Convention & Keeping Artistic Integrity with Richard Malone

Extraordinary Creatives

Ceri is joined by Richard Malone, a groundbreaking Irish artist whose work has been commissioned for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Permanent Collection and is held in MoMA. Coming from a working class background in Ireland, Malone talks about forging a unique creative path, rejecting conventional systems, embracing being an outsider and keeping artistic integrity despite opportunities for commercial success. KEY TAKEAWAYS The colours and materials in Richard's work connect directly to his experiences on building sites and his grandmother's textile work. Despite not following traditional paths, Richard's commitment to making work on his own terms has led to significant recognition, including being the first Irish artist commissioned for the Metropolitan Museum's Permanent Collection. Richard believes in maintaining complete creative control, rejecting commercial opportunities (including creative director positions) that would compromise his artistic integrity. For Richard, success means having the daily privilege to create in his studio rather than external validation, fame, or financial reward, which helps him maintain perspective. Richard views trust as essential to the creative process, crediting collaborators who created psychological safety for his most successful projects, including his Royal Academy installation. Coming from a working class background in Ireland has given Richard a different perspective on institutions like the Royal Academy, allowing him to approach them with both respect and necessary irreverence. Richard believes artists need to become comfortable with failure and rejection and accept things when they don’t happen the way you would like or expect. BEST MOMENTS "The further that you get from where you started, the more you realise the importance of those things in constructing who you end up becoming." "I think there is a part of me that really resists that art market in the way that I resisted the fashion system because it doesn't feel right to me.” "The real luxury and the real joy, which I don't think a lot of people understand now, is that I get to come and sit in a studio and make whatever I want in a day. That is unbelievable to me from where I have come from." "Like it reads immaculately, award, award, award, show, show, show, institution, institution, institution. But like, none of that was planned. And there's so much shit that's in between." "I've been rejected for everything at least once. And I think now when I get rejected for something, it means nothing. It means absolutely nothing to me. I'm just like, oh, it's just not in my path.” "Get off social media. It's not real and stop looking sideways." Holly Guertin is a contemporary fiber artist and textile designer in the Philadelphia, PA area. In her work, she explores the interconnectedness of the human person and invites her viewers to look at sheep and their wool as if in a mirror. In an increasingly disconnected, disembodied, and virtual world, her process-intense work grounds the viewer to the tactile and the real, showing the human experience as a marvel and a wonder. Holly graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a BFA in Fibers in 2011 and has been working in textiles and fiber arts ever since. Aside from her fiber artwork, she also creates textile designs for fashion brands. Her artwork has been featured in publications like Colossal, Business of Home, Frankie Magazine, and Knit Wit Magazine, among others. Her artwork has been displayed through SCAD's Permanent Collection in Atlanta, Savannah, Hong Kong, and France. In 2019, she collaborated with Anthropologie for two collections, Fall and Holiday, inspired by her artworks. Honored with many awards for his films and achievement in the horror genre, Tobe Hooper is truly one of the Masters of Horror (2005).Tobe Hooper was born in Austin, Texas, to Lois Belle (Crosby) and Norman William Ray Hooper, who owned a theater in San Angelo. He spent the 1960s as a college professor and documentary cameraman. In 1974, he organized a small cast that was made up of college teachers and students, and then he and Kim Henkel made The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), featuring the maniacal chainsaw-wielder Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen). This film changed the horror film industry and became an instant classic, remaining on many lists of top horror films of all time. Hooper based it upon the real-life killings of Ed Gein, a cannibalistic killer responsible for the grisly murders of several people in 1950s Wisconsin. Rex Reed said, "It's the scariest film I have ever seen." Leonard Maltin wrote, "While not nearly as gory as its title suggests, 'Massacre' is a genuinely terrifying film made even more unsettling by its twisted but undeniably hilarious black comedy." Fanny is a writer, editor, art critic, and the founder of Permanent Collection, a clothing and household goods line.As Fanny set out to write Always Home—part memoir, part cookbook, and partially neither of those things—she began negotiating an inheritance that her mother passed down: her relationship to and appreciation for food.Unsurprisingly, food was a central theme in Fanny’s childhood home, though she tells us she mostly learned from her mother via “sort of a process of osmosis.” Always Home is, of course, filled with stories and memories from Fanny’s life, and it’s loaded with vivid descriptions of sensory experiences related to food: meals she’s enjoyed at home and around the world. She writes about her mother’s practice of burning sage or rosemary when they returned home from a trip, and how as a child she once tried fish cooked in a fig leaf—despite first being opposed to the idea—because her mother was able to describe the flavor and scent of the coconut-y leaf. Fanny Singer shares memories from her unconventional childhood, growing up in the revered Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, California alongside her mother, legendary chef Alice Waters. She describes how the restaurant's staff became an extended family (often referred to as “La Famille Panisse”), talks about the sophisticated palate she developed from a young age (think: salmon roe), and discusses how her work today marries her past and present (collaborations between her company, Permanent Collection, and Chez Panisse). In the show's second half, Alice Waters joins the conversation to reminisce about time spent cooking for and with her daughter, reading Fanny's memoir, and cultivating a sense of family at her restaurant. Read Fannys original My Family Recipe essay. My Family Recipe is created by the Food52 Podcast Network and Heritage Radio Network, inspired by the eponymous Food52 column.

When most people get into the fashion business, the goal always seems to be MORE. More styles, more inventory, more sales, more growth. But today's guest, along with his co-founder, are actually on the pursuit of less. Their brand, ASKET is Swedish menswear company on a mission to end overconsumption and restore value in the apparel industry which they achieved so far by stepping away from seasonal churn and instead focusing on a permanent collection. It's a simple concept in theory but one that has proven to unlock a radical new way of working. Their new methodology has resulted in zero end of season overproduction, which means there's no need for discounting, ultimately reducing snap-shopping decisions that contributes to the issue of overconsumption. This slow approach to retail is super refreshing and affords them the time to become accountable for their supply chain, which by the end of summer, will be completely transparent through what they call the Impact Receipt, which will outline the environmental impact of every single garment in their collection. On this episode of The Andrew Coelho Show, I'm joined by August Bard Bringeus, Co-Founder of Asket. We chatted about some pretty cool topics like the best time to raise growth capital, how to build out a solid PR plan, and the long-term vision he sees for the fashion and apparel industry at large. Sponsor Before I jump into this episode, I wanted to take a second to thank my sponsors at Bean Bundle, Canada's newest coffee subscription. Fanny Singer eats a green salad every day. Her ritual begins with the washing of lettuce: rinsing in cold water, a few times, then scattering across a tea towel and rolling said towel like biscuit dough into a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll, or ‘lettuce baby' as it's known in the Singer/Waters kitchen, is then tucked into the fridge until it's time to eat. It's these little windows of detail - gentle guidance mixed with whimsy - that Fanny shares in her recent memoir, Always Home. Fanny is a writer, art critic, curator, editor and co-founder of the design brand Permanent Collection, and daughter of the chef, educator and organic farming champion Alice Waters. Wednesday, November 6, 2019 In museums today, we employ user-centered design practices while developing projects to define our audiences and align with their needs. All too often, though, we lack the time and resources to do the equally valuable post-launch work of user-centered evaluation—work that could take us from the theoretical to the practical by shedding light on who actually uses these projects, and how. This knowledge is especially critical in cases where content design methodologies span multiple projects, or even multiple institutions, as in the growing field of online collection catalogue publishing. This session presents the findings of an ambitious evaluation of online scholarly catalogues produced by four museums: The Art Institute of Chicago, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. The study, conducted by Rockman et al, draws upon evaluation of web analytics, user surveys, and in-depth user testing and focus groups. By addressing questions such as how the digital publications compare to scholarly works in print, what platforms and features create the best experience, and how the digital interface facilitates engagement with museum collections, it aims to close the gap between the audiences we plan for, and those we are truly serving. Session Type60-Minute Session (Professional Forum or Hands-on Demonstration) TrackEvaluation Chatham House RuleNo Key Outcomes After attending this session, participants will have a better understanding of user expectations and desires for online scholarly publications, and of the associated metrics for measuring success. Last year, we invited artist, writer, and Queens College professor Chloë Bassto talk with curator, art historian, and museum veteran Lowery Stokes Sims to have a conversation of their choosing. It took me a year to publish this podcast, but I’m happy to say their words are more relevant today than ever, as the two art world figures discuss the imagined publics of contemporary art, public and private education, and the challenges of empathy and identity in art. Bass is no stranger to Hyperallergic readers, and she's known for her deep engagement with art and writing coupled with a solid understanding of the way art functions in the world and the emotional sophistication needed to outline those parameters. Then there’s Lowery Stokes Sims, who has been a trailblazer throughout her career. She was on the education and curatorial staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1972 to 1999, during which time she specialized in modern and contemporary art. From 2000 to 2007, she was executive director and then president of The Studio Museum in Harlem, and served as Adjunct Curator for the Permanent Collection. Then from 2007 until 2015, she chief curator at New York’s Museum of Arts and Design. I think you’ll agree that the following conversation offers useful insight into the worlds of two leading figures in New York’s art community. On January 10th - April 28th, 2011 the Don Russell Clayton Gallery exhibited at the Bailey Performance Center showing off their “Modern and Contemporary Arts from the Permanent Collection”. The video shows a unique way of how the Learning Man, one of the many pieces in the art collection, was transported to the Performance Center. For more than a decade, Viola Frey's sculpture, "Leaning Man III," had stood sentry in the Student Center at Kennesaw State University. Students returning to school this month will certainly notice his absence. In December, a special crew carefully disassembled the nine-foot tall artwork and moved it to the Don Russell Clayton Gallery in the Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance Center, where it was be one of the highlights of the exhibition, "Modern and Contemporary Work from the Permanent Collection." The show will ran Jan. 10 through April 28. Like all of the works in the exhibition, "Leaning Man III," was given to Kennesaw State by a generous donor. He was a gift from Richard and Judy Marks, who have contributed several largescale pieces to the KSU permanent collection. Started in 1972 with gifts from Fred Bentley Sr. and J. Allan Sellars, the collection has grown to include nearly 1,000 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper dating from the late-15th century to the present. This special exhibition focuses on just a portion of the collection.

Cinemad podcast #2: Azazel Jacobs' award-winning film MOMMA'S MAN premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, and quickly became one of the most lauded films of the year, winding up on many "best of" lists. Released in numerous international territories, it was distributed domestically by Kino International. Jacobs' short film KIRK AND KERRY was named Best Dramatic Short at the 1997 Slamdance Film Festival and became part of the Permanent Collection of the New York Public Library. He later teamed up with fellow filmmaker Gerardo Naranjo to make the micro-budget feature THE GOODTIMESKID, which found a small but loyal following, and was released by Benten Films. In 2009, he received a commission from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to create the short film I SEE. The son of avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs, Jacobs was born in 1972 and raised in lower Manhattan surrounded by important and innovative artists. He went to undergraduate school at the film department of SUNY Purchase and received his Masters from the American Film Institute in 2002.

Rebroadcast of interview with MARGO HALL, from July 26, 2010 re: Aurora Theatre Company's 19th season opening play, Thursday-Friday, AUG 26-27, through SEPT 26, 2010, Alice Childress's vibrant, humorous, and heartbreaking look at racism through the lens of the theater, TROUBLE IN MIND. Set during the early years of the Civil Rights movement, this disconcerting yet disarmingly funny look at the inequalities of American life in the 1950's highlights the half-truths we tell ourselves about race relations and societal progress in America. First produced in 1955, TROUBLE IN MIND follows a cast of black and white actors attempting to mount a production of a “progressive” new play. The play-within-the-play, entitled Chaos in Belleville, an anti-lynching drama set in the South, written by a white writer and directed by a white director, marks the first opportunity for Wiletta Mayer, a gifted African American actress, to play a leading lady on Broadway. But what compromises must she make to succeed? Robin Stanton (Speech & Debate, Betrayed, Permanent Collection) directs this play about race, identity, and opportunity, featuring Bay Area favorite Margo Hall in her Aurora Theatre Company debut. We close with another rebroadcast. This from AUG 20, where we open with the Dreams, as in DREAM GIRLS which also opens tonight in San Francisco, at the Curran Theatre. We also speak to Friends of the Negro Spirituals awardees this year, get an update on the Oscar Grant case and hear about a fundraiser last week, AUG 20 and other upcoming events from Oscar's Uncle Bobby. We close with John Santos, who shares a new musical project which debuts part 1 AUG 21-22 weekend.
