Last but certainly not least of our Nimona interviews is Eugene Lee Yang who chats about early representation (shout out to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), casting against type, and queer love stories. More about Nimona When Ballister Boldheart, a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc — for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to…just wreak serious havoc.    Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, NIMONA is an epic tale about finding friendship in the most surprising situations and accepting yourself and others for who they are. Based on the National Book Award-nominated, New York Times best-selling graphic novel by ND Stevenson. Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, Indya Moore, RuPaul Charles , Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman Nimona is out streaming now on Netflix. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing FAST COLOR (2018), which is currently streaming on Hulu. Directed by Julia Hart, with writing credits to Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz, the film follows Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a woman with superhuman abilities who's been on the run for years, chased by people trying to use her and her powers to repair the planet. With nowhere to go, she goes back home to her mother (Lorraine Toussaint) who has been raising Ruth's daughter, Lila (Saniyya Sidney). While the ideas in the story are interesting, the performances which were all solid do not save this film. The film has a run time of 1 h 40 m and is rated PG-13. Often people remark how they would love to open a restaurant and from the outside looking in, there is an understandable appeal. After all, having a home court to greet old friends, meet new ones, celebrate special occasions, and moving around the room in charge, can look glamorous at times. But behind-the-scenes, what does it take to be a restaurateur operating at a higher level? This week's guests, Michael Vann and Alvin Clayton , both restaurateurs, self-made, and with careers in the fashion industry, provide a glimpse into the world of hospitality from a restaurateur's point of view. After working as an executive with Lord & Taylor in New York City, Chicago native Michael Vann pivoted to the hospitality industry starting as general manager at B. Smith's restaurant, working with the legendary B. Smith in the late 80s. From there, his entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to develop, own and operate several restaurants in New York City including the renowned Shark Bar, serving upscale soul food in the 1990's. Michael is currently in the process of establishing new locations for his most recent concept, Smitty & Mo's, a very popular fast casual restaurant. Alvin Clayton is a Trinidad-born restaurateur, artist, and model. He and his wife, Gwen, are the owners and operators of the award-winning Southern and Caribbean restaurant, Alvin and Friends, located in New Rochelle, New York. Alvin's restaurant career started in the famed and ground-breaking Los Angeles restaurant, Georgia, helmed by Brad Johnson which had several celebrity investors including Denzel Washington, Norm Nixon, Debbie Allen, and Lou Adler. Alvin is also a self-taught artist whose work exudes bright, bold colors of life in the African experience. His work has been featured in the Smithsonian Institute of African-American Art, several films, and most recently, a virtual political show, Unapologetically Me. Among his art patrons are Ken and Kathy Chenault, New York University, Denzel Washington, Blair Underwood, Hill Harper, CCH Pounder and Lorraine Toussaint, to name a few. Alvin has also had an illustrious modeling career and recently signed with the world-renowned IMG Models. In this episode, with decades of experience in the same industry, host Brad Johnson sits down with Michael and Alvin to discuss their journeys, how they started in the hospitality industry, what made being a restaurateur the right fit for them, how they find the strength to carry on during trying times, what direction they are taking going forward and the future of the industry.

The daytime talk show had previously canceled its Monday and Tuesday live shows and was supposed to have a new episode tomorrow, March 17. Friday and Monday were already going to be pre-empted due to NCAA Tournament. The news comes amid shocking new allegations against Osbourne that she has used offensive language, including racial epithets towards former co-host/exec producer Julie Chen as well as lesbian slurs when referring to former co-host/exec producer Sara Gilbert. During Wednesday’s episode of The Talk, Sharon Osbourne became emotional and combative during a discussion with her co-hosts about how her public support for Piers Morgan following his comments about Meghan Markle is being perceived. Sheryl Underwood noted that “while you are standing by your friend, it appears that you are giving validation or safe haven to something that he has uttered that is racist.” Among his most incendiary remarks, Morgan said he did not believe Markle’s suicidal thoughts. 2. #ConcreteCowboy #SharonOsbourne #T3Medias 1. From Deadline: The Talk will remain dark this week and will return to originals next Tuesday. 2. From Movie Trailers on Fandango: Concrete Cowboy is a 2020 American Western drama film directed by Ricky Staub, from a screenplay by Staub and Dan Walser, based upon the novel Ghetto Cowboy by Greg Neri, which is a fictionalization of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club and urban African-American horse-riding culture in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The film is about a 15-year-old boy from Detroit who is sent to live with his estranged father in Philadelphia and learns about the local urban cowboys. The film stars Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin, Jharrel Jerome, Byron Bowers, Lorraine Toussaint, and Clifford "Method Man" Smith. Concrete Cowboy had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2020, and is scheduled to be released on Netflix on April 2, 2021. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 76% based on 42 reviews, with an average rating of 6.24/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "Well-acted and solidly directed, Concrete Cowboy lassos old-fashioned uplift with its story of a father and son in a little-seen corner of American culture. 3. Idris Elba as a cowboy? I mean who wouldn’t be sold? Overall, Concrete Cowboy is a solid film based on the real life Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club in Philadelphia. It’s a mix of fictionalizing the club with a (sometimes stereotypical) story of a young teen reconnecting with his father. Caleb McLaughlin plays Cole, a troubled teen that is sent by his mother to live with his father Harp (Idris Elba), in a last ditch effort to get Cole to turn his life around.  Image credit: Courtesy of TIFF Concrete Cowboy is one of those films that is solid but could have been so much more if given to directors and writers with a bit more lived experience with the subject. There are times where it feels that this film tries to handle more complex issues and the script just wasn’t equipped for that. Where this film works is when it focus on the story of Fletcher Street and the riding community. This film uses actual members of the community in some of the roles and they such a good job that it might not be until the end of the film when they do a montage of some of them and their real names that you realize they weren’t actors at all. It works because Concrete Cowboy leans on seasoned actors like Elba, McLaughlin, Lorraine Toussaint and Method Man to help flesh out the story. Yes you read that right. Method Man is quietly rises in my rankings of rappers turned actors. What’s actually impressed me about Clifford Smith (gotta use his government for this one) is the roles he’s taking. We know he can do the silly and ridiculous (The How High films are still hilarious). But we’re seeing him in more roles like the one he plays in Concrete Cowboy where he’s taking a more serious and balanced role. I’m here for it. He’s clearly good at it and he has the range.  Unfortunately, Concrete Cowboy doesn’t stick to what it's good at. The film decides to go the route of Cole being “pulled back in” by a friend, played by Jharrel Jerome, in the neighborhood. A lot of time is wasted on this storyline that could have been better served really going into more details about the neighborhood, the history of Fletcher Street, urban cowboys and more. Instead  it feels that we get just parts of these stories and not the whole picture. It also takes the audience away from its strong suit (the actors and chemistry). While we do get enough of the turmoil between Harp and Cole, there could have been more. We also only get hints of the relationship/friendship between Harp and Leroy (Method Man) and Lorraine Toussaint is criminally under used. Image credit: Courtesy of TIFF All in all, Concrete Cowboy is worth checking out but it will leave audiences feeling a bit empty and wanting more. Now if that feeling of wanting more leads to more people looking up and supporting the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club then it still ends up being a net positive. MOVIE REVIEW: I have fond memories of reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark back in Elementary school. Well, when I say reading, I mean looking at all the spooky illustrations. Even so, I still remember having a grand old time with my friends telling each other stories from the pages of Alvin Schwartz anthologies. Although I must admit, I never got around to reading his third volume. But I did get out of the house and catch the film adaption of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and it captured an adolescent atmosphere with expert precision (whether that's a compliment is for you to decide). Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is Rated PG-13 for terror/violence, disturbing images, thematic elements, language including racial epithets, and brief sexual references. Storm Saulter is a filmmaker and visual artist from Negril, Jamaica, on a mission to create universal stories wrapped in the complex social and cultural dynamics of the Caribbean.   Storm served as writer, director and cinematographer on his award-winning feature film “Better Mus’ Come,” hailed by critics as signaling a fresh new movement of independent filmmaking throughout the Caribbean. His latest movie "Sprinter" is set to release on April 24th.   SPRINTER tells the story of Akeem Sharp (Dale Elliott), who is set to be Jamaica’s next big track-and-field sensation. Akeem hopes a rise in the track-and- field world will take him to the U.S. to reunite him with his mother (Lorraine Toussaint, Orange is the New Black), who has supported the family while living as an illegal resident for over a decade. But Akeem’s rising star is weighed down by turmoil at home: a volatile father, and an unruly older brother who insinuates himself into Akeem’s career as a means of escaping – or perhaps enhancing – his scam artist hustle. Not only does Akeem have to prove to himself and to everyone that he can succeed, but also overcome the struggles that may ultimately bring him down.   The film is Executive Produced by Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith along with NBA Veteran and NBA Personality Richard Jefferson.

Interracial relationships come with their own complexities, and there are a lot of questions that come up. Questions like: How does your partner think about race? How do you talk about it? What works, and what doesn't? Kim McLarin writes about race and dating in her piece, which is read by Lorraine Toussaint ("The Village").

Julia Hart was a school teacher for eight years before she quit to make a go of screenwriting. Her debut screenplay, The Keeping Room, landed on the 2012 Black List and was made into a feature directed by Daniel Barber (Harry Brown) and starring Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld and Sam Worthington. Julia's directorial debut, Miss Stevens, is based on Julia’s experience as a teacher. It starred Lily Rabe, Timothee Chalamet, Lili Reinhart, and Rob Huebel. In 2018, Julia’s second feature, Fast Color, debuted at SXSW. It tells the story of a family of women afflicted/blessed with a mysterious power and stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, and David Straithairn. Most recently, Julia directed and co-wrote (with Jordan Horowitz) Star Girlfor Disney, starring Grace Vanderwall and based on the best-selling book by Jerry Spinelli. Although Julia only recently saw One False Move, she was shocked at how thematically similar her film Fast Color compares to it. She and April discuss the use of violence in cinema, and how a filmmaker can make it have an emotional impact on the audience. Julia also reveals how she rewrites her scripts once the films have been cast in order to tailor the role to the actor. And she and April also adulate the performance and career of the late, great Bill Paxton. You should check out Fast Color in theaters on April 19. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch One False Move. She's perhaps best known for playing one of modern television's baddest villains, "Vee" on “Orange Is The New Black.” Now with NBC's “The Village” premiering last week, and both “Fast Color” and the new season of “Into The Badlands” premiering this week, plus Julie Taymor's “The Glorias” wrapping this month, all featuring the incredible Lorraine Toussaint, we might as well call this period "The Lorrainaissance." In this half hour she takes a break from the hubbub and takes us deep into her process, her "almost schizo" embodiment of characters, what she needs on set, and what it means to LIVE the art. A truly inspirational listen awaits.
