Send us a textIt's October, which means we're getting SPOOKY on Get Lit! This month, we'll be featuring all things scary, frightening, haunted, and in our opinion, fun! We're starting with Sheridan Le Fanu, author of Carmilla (considered to be one of the original vampire stories, and inspiration for Dracula!) and many other haunted tails. Le Fanu's legacy includes forays into short stories, novels, poetry, plays. His ideas and stories have inspired just as many adaptations! Get Lit & Get Scared (but in a fun way) this month!

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum recap their week at the DNC. Some sh*t went down behind the scenes, check out our MiniPod this Monday for the full story. VP Harris and Gov Walz are doing their first joint interview with Dana Bash on CNN. We got questions–is this the right outlet, the right interviewer–what's the strategy here? Over 200 staffers from Bush, McCain, and Romneys' teams have endorsed the Harris/Walz ticket as mainstream Republicans jump ship; Angela knows exactly how their support ought to be used. Meanwhile, efforts to suppress the vote pick up steam in Texas as the MAGA election-deniers take over. Texas AG Ken Paxton ordered SWAT-style raids on the homes of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) members. Their supposed crime? Helping folks in their community register to vote…as they've been doing for decades... And the NFRA (National Federation of Republican Assemblies) proposes that VP Harris is not eligible to be president, citing a slavery-era Supreme Court decision. It seems Republicans will do anything to win besides just getting the votes–they are definitely scared y'all. And of course we'll hear from you, our #NLPFam listeners! Jack Rodolico knows exactly what scares him. Sharks. But here's what he doesn't get: if he's so freaked out, why can't he stop incessantly watching online videos of bloody shark attacks? Why would he deliberately seek out the very thing that spooks him?To figure it out, Jack enlists the help of other scaredy-cats: our listeners, who shared their fears about nature with us. Death Row Calling--I Know Where Your Daughters Live I delve into the shadowy underworld of contraband communication, where prisoners wielding illegal cell phones orchestrate a web of threats and criminal enterprises from behind bars. My story revolves around the chilling case of Richard Tabler, a serial killer on Texas Death Row. Tabler's audacious use of a smuggled cell phone to threaten a Texas Senator ignited a political firestorm, unmasking a glaring security breach within the prison system. Contraband Cell Phones Seized at the Polunsky Prison Unit in Texas I reveal the alarming extent to which inmates can exploit contraband technology to reach beyond prison walls, posing a significant threat to public safety and the integrity of the penal system. Serial Killer Richard "Blue" Tabler on Texas Death Row 2007 You will also get a look inside the mind of a bizarre, cold-blooded serial killer who recruited an Army soldier from Fort Hood as his accomplice. And shocker, Tabler was a police drug informant committing murders. Serial Killer Richard Tabler -- Mugshot Texas Death Row In a typewritten letter to me from death row, Tabler claimed he had found Jesus there. Once you hear this, tell me if you believe him. In the past we have sent Tammy out to haunted events because the audio we get back is SO good! What we didn't know is that Producer Jessica is just as scared in haunted houses, maybe even more. So when we sent her and Tammy to SeaWorld's Howl-O-Scream, the audio that came back was hilarious!
Whether you're watching a horror film, or exposed to a sudden loud noise, all of us have jumped at some point when scared. The body's response to getting startled is all too familiar: tense muscles, a racing heartbeat and a twitching neck, among others. But there's still a lot of mystery behind the phenomenon. Jolting is actually a natural and adaptive defensive response that helps our bodies avoid what it perceives as an immediate threat. How often it happens and how intense the response is depends on the context. The more negative or threatening the situation seems, the stronger the reaction. What explains why some people seem to get startled more than others? Why do we sometimes jump as we're falling asleep? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! On October 25, 2012, NYPD Office Gilberto Valle was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping after his estranged wife Kathleen had turned her computer over to the FBI following using spyware and uncovering Gil's sexual obsession with cannibalism. He'd been sharing photos of her and other women with other cannibalism fetishists and writing in graphic detail about how badly he wanted to have her kidnapped, raped, tortured, killed, and eaten. Was Gil planning on killing his wife and other women? Or was he does sharing fantasies? Did he get arrested and sent to prison for committing nothing more than thought crimes? We dig into Gil's story today, and take the longest look at cannibalism we've done so far. What is humanity's history with cannibalism? Is it bad for you? Why do some people become sexually aroused by the thought of eating human flesh? All this and more on another morbidly curious edition of Timesuck. Together, Jack and the gang consider the spectrum of fear, from phobia to terror, and what it might mean when we don't look away.Featuring Lauren Passell, Arash Javanbakht, Nile Carrethers, and Sushmitha Madaboosi. How much do you know about America's first documented serial killers, The Bloody Harpes? Micajah and Wiley Harpe went on a crazy murder spree out on the western American frontier, starting in late 1798. The murdered men, women, children, and even babies. And they'd been bad, murderous men long before their final year of terror. They'd ran with a gang of river pirates, they'd been members of a Tory rape gang during the Revolutionary War. They went on raids with a band of Cherokee warriors. They LOVED to try and split a skull in two with a tomahawk. Their entire crazy true crime story told this week. How do you get started as a writer while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood and mortgages? According to Jill Robinson, it's all about small steps and letting yourself get scared. A couple years ago, Jill pivoted from her 20 plus years in speech pathology into a career in professional writing and hasn't looked back. Since making that decision, she has begun earning an income through publishing stories in Kindle Vella, Chicken Soup for the Soul and other publications. In this episode she shares how she is building a thriving author life, including tips on leveraging Kindle Vella as an early career author. Today we cover the formation of the infamous Bloods and Crips gang rivalry. How did it get started? Why did it begin in South Central Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s? The Crips were founded by two high schoolers named Raymond Washington and Stanley “Tookie” Williams, who formed an alliance to protect their neighborhoods from other young people who were harassing them. And then very quickly, gang violence escalated far beyond beating up other kids with your fists to drive-by shootings, over 15,000 murders, and controlling much of the nation's drug trade. Hope you find all this info as interesting as I did. For four months in 1974, 28 year old Paul John Knowles went on a reckless murder spree across the United States that claimed the lives of at least 18 people. He killed men, women, seniors, and small children. He strangled some, shot others, and stabbed still others. Some crimes were sexual, and some weren't. The man who had spent more than half his life incarcerated in some form for a variety of petty, generally theft-related crimes suddenly became very, VERY violent. Why? That's what we explore in today's real-life monster, fit-for-October, true crime edition of Timesuck. Karson & Barrett go through Barrett's Haunted Mansion
The name The Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God might not sound familiar, but in the world of cults, it should be. Only one cult in modern history has ever had more people die in its final act, the Peoples Temple's Jonestown Massacre. 778 people died in Uganda in early 2000 - murdered by cult leaders who had failed to correctly predict the day the world would end and the apocalypse would begin, on four different occasions. Today we explore what this cult was about - including the messages its leaders received from their preposterous "visions" of Mother Mary - and we also explore how and why this cult was able to flourish in Uganda in the 1990s. Decades of chaos had left many in the nation ready to receive proclamations of an impending apocalypse.
