Ep. 96: Weird Appalachia - The Flatwoods Monster

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2022 62:30

The American region of Appalachia, much like our native New England, is a land of folklore and high strangeness, and this is perfectly exemplified in the story of the Flatwoods Monster - a maybe-alien, maybe-cryptid that burst onto the scene 70 years ago to completely throw locals for a loop and enchant an entire nation. On September 12th, 1952 in Flatwoods, West Virginia, brothers Eddie and Freddie May were playing with friends when they witnessed a strange object in the sky seemingly land on a nearby farm. Along with their mother and older cousin, the boys went to investigate...and encountered a strange, giant creature (or was it a machine?) that terrified them and would create mythology and questions for decades to come. Was the Flatwoods Monster an alien from another planet? A cryptid, native to the woods of West Virginia? A sibling of the famous Moth Man - or perhaps the Moth Man themself? Or, was this being simply a mistaken owl sitting in a tree? We investigate all the possibilities, and ruminate on the bizarre urban legends of West Virginia and how they become part of the native culture. ________________________________________ Connect with us on social media: Facebook: www.facebook.com/aintitscary Twitter: @aintitscary Instagram: @aintitscary Patreon: www.patreon.com/aintitscary ___________________________________________ Thank you to our sponsors: BetterHelp - Special offer for Ain't it Scary? listeners: Get 10% off your first month at www.betterhelp.com/aintitscary Audible - Get a FREE audiobook and 30-Day Free Trial at www.audibletrial.com/aintitscary BarkBox - Enjoy a FREE month of BarkBox on us when you sign up for a 6 or 12-month BarkBox subscription! This week we hit the foreign districts and seedy neighborhoods of pre-war Beijing with a look at the unsolved murder of Pamela Werner. The 19-year-old was found beaten to death and gruesomely mutilated one January morning in 1937, as Beijing found itself awash in refugees and expatriates and Japanese Army units camped closer and closer to the city.  Pamela's death would fascinate the media, but an international police team was stymied until the outbreak of war permanently interrupted the investigation. This week Sean takes us through the crime and the investigation - and one devoted father's relentless quest to find his daughter's murderer, and lose friends doing it. On July 17th, 1996 TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747 jet carrying 230 passengers and crew, exploded over the Center Moriches New York bay, setting fire to a peaceful summer night. Hundreds of witnesses along the Long Island coast watched as a strange flare-like object seemed to rise from the horizon, turn in the air, and impact on or near the plane, causing it to breakup midair and plunge into the ocean below. There were no survivors. The FBI and NTSB, however, came to the official conclusion that the TWA Flight 800 tragedy was a terrible accident, probably the result of an ignition in the center fuel tank, causing the plane to explode. But why are the witness testimonies and final conclusions so wildly different? Could the FBI be covering up the real cause of the explosion. And if so...who are they covering for? We investigate all the major theories - conspiracy and otherwise - and attempt to come to some sort of logical conclusion. After all, in the case of a TWA Flight 800 crash conspiracy...qui bono? And, sometimes, those solutions end up being even worse - and could very well even kill us. This week, we explore stories of quack doctors and snake oil salesman in history, including a Founding Father of America, the creator of Kellogg's Corn Flakes, the inventor of the vibrator and "pelvic massage", the fans of bloodletting and leeching, and the salesmen of tonics and restoratives that included deadly ingredients like mercury, arsenic, antimony, and even opium and cocaine. On part two of our two-part Slender Man series, we dive into the very real consequences of this modern legend of a monster with the infamous "Slender Man Stabbing" case. In May 2014, 12-year old Payton Leutner was discovered, injured and bleeding, on the outside of the woods in her native Waukesha, Wisconsin. Payton had an unbelievable story to tell law enforcement: she had been attacked and stabbed by her two preteen friends, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, who had apparently believed that Payton's death was necessary to appease the mythical "Slender Man" so they would be accepted as his proxies and go live with him at "Slender Mansion" in the Nicolet National Park forest. Geyser and Weier would be tried as adults for their horrific crime...but how sane and competent were these tweens, really? We explore both sides of the story, and debate whether the concept of Slender Man really influenced these girls to commit this heinous act - or if they were mentally unable to understand the consequences. Is it possible for an online meme-turned-urban legend to become...real? That's the question we ask this week as we investigate the origins of Slender Man, an eerie, faceless monster known to have been created on the Something Awful forums in June 2009. While Slender Man's origins are traceable, his reach has extended much further than even his long limbs and tentacles could have possibly ever expected. Do some people really believe in Slender Man? Have those beliefs been powerful enough to turn this viral creature into a "tulpa" strong enough to bend those in reality to its will? And even if not...does it even matter? Here in part one we chart the origin of the Slender Man mythos, and prepare for next week's dive into the reality of the horror with the 2014 Slender Man Stabbing. While a colorful local character was eventually arrested and prosecuted for the crimes (sound familiar?), doubts linger to this day about who was behind these women's fate. In the aftermath, sailors were said to have strange, lingering side effects or to have gone completely mad. Despite the apparent leap forward in technology and the wide-ranging, public side effects - the story stayed under wraps until the mid-50s, when one witness started getting his story out there through, shall we say, non-traditional channels. In November 1987, one of the weirdest moments of TV history happened right underneath the noses of the Chicago viewing public. That night a mysterious figure wearing a full-head "Max Headroom" mask invaded the broadcasts of local Chicago TV stations WGN and WTTW. Initially, on WGN, the masked marauder was only able to cut in for about 30 seconds before the transmission was re-seized by network engineers...but on WTTW, which was airing an innocuous Doctor Who rerun, the signal hijacking would last an entire minute and a half and include a garbled, manic tirade involving Chicago sportscasters, obscure local children's shows, New Coke, and, uh, spanking. To this day, no one knows who was behind the Max Headroom Incident...but that's where the mystery really begins. This week, Carrie takes us through the nitty-gritty of late 80s pop culture, broadcasting technology, and Reddit-based speculation, along with the strange stories of two other signal hijackings: the Captain Midnight broadcast signal intrusion and the Southern Television broadcast interruption - the latter of which may possibly have come from a place beyond our galaxy! The British colony of the Bahamas even lost an entire island to pirate occupation as Nassau became home base for all of the most famous criminals ever to sail the seas. Of all of these pirates, none had a more fearsome reputation - and none is better remembered today - than Blackbeard. José had never seen anything like it before...and he never would again. However, a couple more video clips have turned up in the years after the footage became public that suggest these strange creatures may not be a singular incident. Are they cryptids? Aliens? We're rounding out Axe Murder Month with two weeks on Sean's favorite solution to last week's unsolved mystery, the 1912 axe murders in Villisca, Iowa: the roving serial-murderer theory proposed by famed baseball writer Bill James in his 2017 book “The Man From The Train.” This week Sean spends a long time raving about Bill James, and then weaves the tale of a 19th century East Coast murder spree stretching from Massachusetts to Florida. Were these family murders all committed by one man? Was that same person responsible for the Villisca murders years later? And how much practice does it take to set a house on fire? Sometime in the overnight hours of June 9-10, 1912 in the tiny town of Villisca, Iowa, eight people - including six children - were killed by an intruder, with an axe, in cold blood. The case caused a national uproar and years of investigation...and it remains unsolved to this day. This week, Sean takes us through the facts in one of the most infamous axe murders in American history, and some of the principal suspects throughout the years. Were the Moore family and the young Stillinger girls killed by a hitman over a business rivalry? Targets of an elderly local pervert? Part of a sinister crime spree? And is it possible that one J.N. Wilkerson of the Burns Detective Agency is the most criminal actor named in this episode? Well, in like a lion, out like a lamb, as they say. Our first part focuses on one of the most famous early unsolved murder sprees in American history. From 1910 to 1911, and again from 1917 to 1920, New Orleans' famous French Quarter was stalked by a madman with a lust for blood. This mysterious figure, dubbed "The Axeman of New Orleans" by history, was an American serial killer long before the term was invented. Listeners may be familiar with the murderer's famous newspaper letter or his obsession with jazz music - but this week Sean takes us through the surprising true story behind the Axeman's obsession, and we look for the real motive behind the madness. This house at its peak comprised 7 stories, 24000 square feet, and 161 rooms including 40 bedrooms and dozens of stairways and fireplaces. The strangest part of the house's construction, aside from its never-ending nature, is the architectural oddities that litter the mansion. These include stairs and doors to nowhere, windows overlooking other rooms, and strange angular design choices that seem to make no sense. So, why did Winchester do this?Legend goes that the Winchester family was cursed by the dead killed by the Winchester repeating arms guns, including the famous "Gun That Won the West". Sarah Winchester just may have been building this endless home to hide from the spirits, believing they were the cause of the deaths of her husband and infant daughter, and perhaps trying to appease them into not claiming her life as well.We explore the strange story of Sarah Winchester and her mystery house, along with the reputed hauntings that draw paranormal shows to investigate the home to this day.________________________________________Connect with us on social media:Facebook: www.facebook.com/aintitscaryTwitter: @aintitscaryInstagram: @aintitscaryPatreon: www.patreon.com/aintitscary___________________________________________Thank you to our sponsors:BetterHelp - Special offer for Ain't it Scary? listeners: Get 10% off your first month at www.betterhelp.com/aintitscaryAudible - Get a FREE audiobook and 30-Day Free Trial at www.audibletrial.com/aintitscaryBarkBox - Enjoy a FREE month of BarkBox on us when you sign up for a 6 or 12-month BarkBox subscription! Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2021 102:58

In honor of the Beatles documentary Get Back premiering over Thanksgiving on Disney+, Carrie takes us through one of her favorite conspiracies of all time: "Paul is Dead". This conspiracy theory, which spread across the globe like wildfire beginning in late 1969, purports that the "Cute Beatle", Paul McCartney - writer of such classic songs as "Yesterday", "Hey Jude", and more - was killed in a tragic car accident in November 1966. Not wanting to cause mass hysteria, The Beatles partnered up with MI-5 to cover up the untimely death, hiding the truth from the press and replacing McCartney with a lookalike, William Shears Campbell. Fake Paul, or 'Faul', premiered on the album cover art and in the songs for The Beatles' subsequent album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band...and has played the part of Paul McCartney ever since. At least, that's what the conspiracy claims. And there are apparently dozens of clues to back the theory up; clues placed purposefully in the lyrics, music, and album art of The Beatles' final works before their official breakup in 1970. There are even tidbits to be found throughout each of The Beatles' solo careers, too. Carrie explores and explains all of the most intriguing clues, gives us the skinny on what "I Am the Walrus" really means, and debates the strange sounds heard in backwards Beatles recordings. Plenty of trigger warnings apply as Sean takes us back to the grim world of serial killers with the human string of misadventures known as Paul John Knowles. After killing (probably) 20 people on a cross-country crime spree, Knowles was dubbed the "Casanova Killer" by the press, who mistook him for a dashing ladies' man and mastermind murderer. In reality - as we'll see - he was as much a failure as a criminal as he was in the bedroom. Not surprisingly, hotels are also places that seem to attract the spirits of their former tenants. From a golf course ghost in upstate New York to the super-haunted hotel that inspired Stephen King's The Shining; from the spirits of Lizzie Borden and her possible victims to the crooked cancer doctor who buried his specimens in a resort's backyard and the specter of one of the greatest comedians in Hollywood history, we take a twisted road trip through America's most haunted hotels...stopping, of course, at each for a spooky overnight stay. On March 16th, 1957, a Venusian named Valiant Thor landed his flying saucer in Alexandria, Virginia. After meeting Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon at the White House, Thor would live in an a luxury apartment in the base of the Pentagon for the next three years, while he helped the American government develop new technology and... tried to share the good word about Jesus? Anyway, that's the assertion made by 1967's Stranger at the Pentagon, a classic of UFO contactee "nonfiction" whose presence is still felt in pop culture today - from Ancient Aliens to the MCU and even American Horror Story, where a version of Valiant Thor himself is making an appearance this season. Sean sat down with the book to answer the essentials: Who was this mysterious, fingerprintless man from the stars? What did he want with us? Here we are at the long-awaited final episode in our Salem Witch Trials series. What is there to say aside from that on this episode we examine the worst miscarriages of justice in the whole hysteria: the 20 innocent people executed on blatantly vague charges of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts during the latter half of 1692. We see the deaths of John Proctor, the hero of the play The Crucible; the brutal pressing death of stubborn Giles Corey, the tragic murder of Salem's former minister Reverend George Burroughs, and more. We also explore theories around how this was allowed to happen, and what Salem and Massachusetts have done since to exonerate and honor the victims of this tragic time over 300 years ago. What does that mishmash of an episode title mean? Well, gentle listeners, this week in honor of the approaching All Hallow's Eve we are taking a short break to prepare our intense final episode of our "Salem Witch Trials" series and dropping in a preview of some content we have going on over at Patreon! We just launched a currently Patreon-exclusive new mini-series, "Ain't it Kitschy?", where we will be diving into everything, well, kitschy - kitschy being defined as things considered to be gaudy, vulgar, or sometimes in bad taste, but we define as things that are, well, pleasantly dorky and sometimes vintage or excessively sentimental. Think that painting of dogs playing poker, Velvet Elvises, or in this first episode's case, novelty songs. Halloween novelty songs, to be exact. In honor of the most wonderful time of the year, HALLOWEEN!!, Carrie will be taking us through the history and oddity of two Halloween songs that range from obscure to ubiquitous: "Batman, Wolfman, Frankenstein, or Dracula" by The Diamonds, and "The Monster Mash" by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett & the Crypt Kicker Five. Join us for a little ghoultide merriment, and a whole lot of Carrie waxing poetic about doo-wop music! Thanks for allowing us this mini-break to prep our upcoming wedding reception, we hope you enjoy the episode (and join us over at Patreon!!), and we'll see you next week for the conclusion of the Salem Witch Trials: the executions. Carrie introduces us to the key players in the Salem Witch Trials and the context in which they existed...from afflicted girl Mercy Lewis' deep-rooted trauma from being orphaned by Maine's Native American wars, to elderly jerk Giles Corey accusing his own wife of witchcraft only to see suspicion cast on himself, to Salem's former minister Reverend George Burroughs being dragged back to town all the way from Maine for questioning...and many more. We've finally come to our long promised two-parter on one of Carrie's pet interests, the Salem Witch Trials! In 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, tensions were already high. The Puritan colonists were struggling through the "Little Ice Age" devastating their crops, paranoid about being attacked by neighboring Native American tribes, and quarreling with their minister and each other about who the most godly of the bunch really was. The atmosphere was rife for backstabbing and tragedy, and that tragedy was about to hit in a horrific way. It began with whispers, and would end with screams. Was the root of the Salem Witch Trials the hysteria of a group of young girls? Was everyone completely zonked out from ergot poisoning? Or had Satan himself really infiltrated this infighting colonial town? Join us, as we explore the whole unbelievable story of the Salem Witch Trials in the next two episodes. It didn't come out until his trial that Cavaness had murdered ANOTHER of his sons seven years before. And that's not even including the double reckless homicide before that! Jamestown, Virginia was the first successful English settlement in North America (for the first UNsuccessful one, go check out our episode on Roanoke) - but it came close to failing completely many, many times. The worst of these failures being the tragic Starving Time. Plagued by a deadly combination of famine, disease, and an enemy Native tribe, the Starving Time in winter 1609-1610 almost wiped out the entire colony, leaving only 60 survivors from the original group of 500. And some of these desperate survivors were forced to commit one of the most horrific acts imaginable to live...cannibalism. In 2012 archaeological proof was finally discovered that confirmed what some historians had suspected all along: the Jamestown survivors ate their fellow man during the Starving Time. This week, we take a trip back in time to this deadly winter, and debate if we'd be able to make these terrible choices ourselves. We also have a super-sized news segment this episode with 2 stories on True Crime Time: the second part of the strange saga of South Carolina's blue-blooded Murdaugh family, and the tragic disappearance and murder of Gabby Petito - a case that is still unfolding as we record. In 1998 - then again, in 2000 - our world got a hero, born of another reality. A man who traveled through time to warn us of coming catastrophe. Or, maybe, just one more Internet meme spun out of control. A man calling himself John Titor first faxed Art Bell's Coast to Coast AM program, then later posted on several online message boards. Titor claimed to be a military time traveler from the year 2036, and he told a story of our near future full of war, disease, famine, and catastrophe. Of course, none of those things came to be. But could that be because John warned us? By 1981 her career had cooled, but she still had one thing from her early days of stardom - her marriage to fellow actor Robert Wagner. Well, remarriage, to be precise. There was uncertainty about whether the second Wood-Wagner marriage would survive much longer by the time the couple, fellow movie star Christopher Walken, and skipper Dennis Davern set off for a weekend-long jaunt on the couple's yacht, the Splendour, just after Thanksgiving 1981. At the end of the trip, only 3 of the 4 guests on the Splendour would return home alive. What really happened the fateful night that Natalie Wood supposedly drowned off the California coast? Was it simply a terrible accident, as ruled in the coroner's initial report, or something much more insidious? And why is the famous "Number 2" from the Austin Powers film series the LA police department's number 1 suspect? But Henry VIII wasn't just a big goofus...he also exhibited classic signs of psychopathy, narcissism, and traits of being a serial killer. One that didn't get his own hands dirty, of course, but a killer all the same. The clergy, his wives, rebels and former friends and mentors: no one was safe from Henry's order of a falling axe and a missing head. If you stood in his way, it didn't matter if you were his lover or God Himself...Henry's word was gospel, and nothing - and no one - else mattered.
