In Sook-Yin Lee's film, “Paying For It,” a couple whose romantic attraction is waning decide to open up their relationship. While Sonny explores dating, her introverted boyfriend, Chester, opts to hire sex workers. The story is based on Sook-Yin's real-life former relationship with Canadian cartoonist Chester Brown, who released a bestselling graphic memoir of the same name in 2011. It reflects on intimacy, connection, the rights of sex workers, the boundaries we put around relationships, and Toronto in the ‘90s. Sook-Yin joins Tom Power to talk about the movie and what she learned in the process of making it. Plus, she discusses her early work as a MuchMusic VJ, and how she struggled to deal with the slow cultural shift from alternative music to boy bands.

Levi opens up about his experiences with record deals, the importance of social media, and the influence of his family, including his mother, Becca Stevens, who runs the impactful organization Thistle Farms.Tune in as they discuss songwriting, collaboration, and the unique bond between Levi and his father, Marcus. Plus, get a glimpse into Levi's personal life as he shares exciting news about his upcoming wedding!Listen to Unbroke: (https://ffm.to/seunbroke). About Levi Hummon:Singer-songwriter Levi Hummon spent his early 20s practicing his art, but his immersion into country music started much, much earlier. From the day he was born, his father Marcus Hummon, (one of Nashville's most prolific GRAMMY-winning songwriters [The Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts]) immersed Levi in the music scene, and It didn't take long to realize the apple didn't fall far from the tree. At 24, Levi began releasing music of his own. Cleancut and compelling, he told stories of love and loss while building a loyal fanbase that has grown with him through every bend and break. As a Nashville native who was inspired by the legacies around him and had an undeniable gift of songwriting, it was no surprise that 5 years, 30 released songs, and 100 million streams later as an independent artist, Levi had created a name for himself. In 2021, his viral Walker Hayes collaboration sensation “Paying for It” cemented Levi's status as a rising country star. This sparked a new sense of confidence both on stage and in writing rooms that allowed him to discover the magnitude of his potential as an artist, and a new authentic version of Levi emerged. His follow-up tunes, “Bottled Up,” “For Me,” “Good Riddance,” and “Drink On” are the product of just that. Hummon says, “taking risks, finding my own voice, and showing the scars and roughness around the edges allowed me to portray the most honest version of myself”. Coming off of his first headlining tour in the Fall of ‘21, Levi found himself to be in high demand in the spring and summer of 2022. Warming up the stage for acts like Hardy, Jordan Davis, Brett Eldridge, Brett Young, and Dylan Scott, he was able to experience in person the effects of this momentum and the reward for being unapologetically himself. While listeners across genres are creating the demand now more than ever for both a 90's country comeback and an early 2000's alternative rock revival, Levi's new music has established a unique lane paved by boLET'S BE SOCIAL:Follow Levi Hummon:Instagram – (@levihummon)TikTok – (@levihummon)Facebook – (@levihummon)Website -- levihummon.comFollow Diving in Deep Podcast:Instagram –(@divingindeeppod)TikTok – (@divingindeeppod)Twitter – (@divingindeeppod)Facebook – (@divingindeeppod)Follow Sara Evans: Instagram – (@saraevansmusic)TikTok – (@saraevansmusic)Twitter – (@saraevansmusic)Facebook – (@saraevansmusic)Produced and Edited by: The Cast Collective (Nashville, TN)YouTube – ( @TheCastCollective

Relationships change. On this very special episode we dive into one of our favorite Canadian films of the last calendar year which is now playing at the Scotiabank Theatre; it's time for 'Paying For It'.'Paying For It' is a live-action adaptation of acclaimed alternative-cartoonist Chester Brown's best-selling graphicnovel. In the late 90s, Chester and Sonny are a long-term, committed, romantic couple. When Sonny wants toredefine their relationship, Chester, an introverted cartoonist, starts sleeping with sex workers and discovers a newkind of intimacy in the process. 'Paying For It' is about love, sex and non-monogamy for adults. It deals with thecomplicated subject of the exchange for sex-work versus the complications of romantic love.Adapted from the graphic novel of the same name by Chester Brown this is such a sweet and honest examination of the ever evolving nature of intimacy and one of the reasons that it hits so darn well is because a lot of it is pulled from the life of the films writer/director, the one and only Sook-Yin Lee.Before the film debuted back at TIFF, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Sook-Yin to talk about the nature of the story, the personal and broader elements of it all as she brought this passion project to screen.'Paying For It' is in select theatres across Canada now.

In this special episode, Sook-Yin Lee, the iconic radio and TV broadcaster, musician, film director, actress, and trailblazing MuchMusic veejay, and Chester Brown, the acclaimed alternative cartoonist, swing by the YVR Screen Scene Podcast studio to talk about Paying For It. The feature film – which had its premiere in Toronto and screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival – is a live-action adaptation of Chester's best-selling graphic novel that was inspired by the end of his relationship with Sook-Yin (who, in the film, is represented by a character named Sonny who works as a veejay at MaxMusic). Here's the premise for both the book and the film: In the late 90s, Chester and Sonny are a long-term, committed, romantic couple. When Sonny wants to redefine their relationship, Chester, an introverted cartoonist, starts sleeping with sex workers and, in the process, discovers a new kind of intimacy. “Paying For It: a comic strip memoir about being a john” was adapted for the screen by Sook-Yin and Joanne Sarazen; the film was directed by Sook-Yin and stars Dan Beirne as Chester and Emily Le as Sonny. In this riveting interview, Sook-Yin and Chester speak candidly about their journey to bring this story to the screen, art as activism, and if Canadians are ready to talk about sex work as work.Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

Slam the Gavel welcomes back Emanuel Shetler to the podcast. Emanuel was last on the podcast Season 4; Episodes 17 and 117.  Emanuel had left the Amish culture back in 2018. That's the only thing he did and now he's PAYING FOR IT. He had wanted a better life and he had asked his wife to leave the Amish community with him however, she refused.  This started a chain of events in his life of harassment  and manipulation, deception and ultimately Parental Alienation from his five children.     Today we discussed the educational level of Amish children. They are equivilently at a 3rd grade READING LEVEL EDUCATION, not the 8th grade READING LEVEL as they LEAD THE PUBLIC TO BELIEVE. Emanuel explained the SLAVE LABOR that starts at an early age for children. They are put into the AMISH WORKFORCE at the age of 8 to 9 years of age within this CULT. Emanuel stated that as soon as they can walk, they are put into working the farms and saw mills. Chores is a "different term" in the Amish world. "This is hard labor," Emanuel stated.      Amish parents strive to keep the children in the Amish CULT, because the more kids the Amish have, when the kids work, the parents COLLECT ALL THE MONEY EARNED by their children without paying TAXES. That's why they have large families, like "retirement accounts." Emanuel figured that from the ages of 13 - 14 years of age to 21, he had earned "at the low end," approximately $250,000.00. Emanuel never saw a penny. Amish children HAVE NO RIGHTS. This is CHILD TRAFFICKING.    Emanuel went on to say that the Amish treat their animals very badly. At the level the Amish treat their animals is how they treat their children AND one another, so animals are lowered to another level; if they can't MAKE MONEY, THEY ARE OF NO USE TO THEM. Emanuel went on to describe how the Amish PARTICIPATE in beastiality. Unfortunately, it is very commonplace within the Amish communities.     He went on to explain that they keep members in this CULT by telling them that if they are questioning the church/CULT, "you were DEEMED to go to Hell. If this is questioned by a member, they are told, 'This is the way it's always been.'"      You can never be forgiven for leaving the CULT. Inspired by Robert Crumb, Crad Kilodney, Art Spiegelman, Seth and other alternative cartoonists, Chester Brown uses his autobiographical comics work to confront issues that he's currently wrestling with or make him uncomfortable. Whether it was the use of scatological humour in Ed the Happy Clown, his relationship with women and his own mother in I Never Liked You or his journey to becoming a John in Paying For It, it's easier for him to unpack his own hang ups when they're made public. Brown talks about how he initially broke into comics with the self-published Yummy Fur, why his art style owes a lot to Harold Gray, the man who behind the Little Orphan Annie comic strip and why being a John makes him more comfortable than being a boyfriend, even though his current arrangement isn't all that different from the traditional relationship he's trying to avoid. Plus, Brown teaches Aaron how he deals with negative self-talk and criticism of his work.Chester Brown's PatreonDrawn and Quarterly (Chester's Publisher)NPR Review of Chester's Latest, “Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus”Yummy Fur on Wikipedia@DrawnandQuarterlyPhilosophers that inspire Chester:Robert Anton Wilson Colin WislonByron KatieThis Episode is Sponsored By Hairy Tarantula!
