Billie is joined by Ashley Habibi — a Latina trans woman, comedian, performer, and person in recovery who is doing a lot, and doing it loudly and proudly during Pride Month.Ashley's story is not a straight line. It winds through a childhood shaped by parental abandonment and being raised by her grandmother in Mexico, through 16 years of performing comedy, through addiction, psychosis, homelessness, and an HIV diagnosis — and then through the moment everything changed: a first date in a wig where strangers stopped her on the street to tell her she was beautiful. She and Billie get into what recovery and transition look like when they happen at the same time, how Ashley became the woman who saved her own life, and what it means to go from having nothing to being an inspiration to others. Plus hormones, electrolysis, broccoli and testosterone, and running for Miss LA Pride 2026.This one's got a lot of heart.

¡Únete a nosotros y déjate sorprender!

It is clear at this point who has the leverage: we—the U.S. and Israel—are winning this war. Rather than opening the Strait of Hormuz, Trump is closing it to Iranian shipping. It is unlikely that the Islamic Republic's military dictatorship can survive this for long. Also in this episode: the China angle of the war, with our guest, the Hudson Institute's Zineb Riboua. And finally, why Viktor Orbán's defeat in Hungary matters.

Deux sessions live au grand studio avec Dominique Fils-Aimé « My world is the sun » + Temenik Electric « Habibi My Love ». Cet enregistrement ouvre aujourd'hui le dernier album de Dominique, My World Is the Sun. My World Is the Sun rend hommage à cette valeur. My World Is the Sun adopte un format d'enregistrement live, laissant place à l'improvisation, tant sur le plan lyrique que musical. À travers cette approche, My World Is the Sun place l'émotion au cœur de chaque morceau. What does leadership look like in moments of sustained uncertainty, high pressure, and constant change? In this episode of Leading Through Crisis, Céline Williams speaks with Iranian human rights advocate Zolal Habibi about what it means to lead with clarity, courage, and conviction, especially when the cost of staying true to your values is high. Drawing on her personal journey and decades of connection to Iran's evolving social and political landscape, Zolal reflects on the leadership principles that sustain individuals and movements through prolonged periods of challenge. From the importance of standing firmly in your values to the role of personal responsibility in shaping collective outcomes, this conversation explores how leaders can stay grounded when navigating complexity and uncertainty. Zolal shares perspectives on resilience, long-term thinking, and the power of purpose, alongside reflections on the role of women in leadership, the impact of lived values versus stated ideals, and how individuals can contribute meaningfully even in the face of overwhelming circumstances. Together, they unpack questions that resonate far beyond any one context: How do you lead when the path forward is unclear? What does it take to remain anchored in your principles under pressure? How can individuals create meaningful change, even in difficult environments? This episode is a thoughtful and nuanced exploration of leadership in times of crisis, offering insights for business owners, managers, and leaders navigating change in their own organizations and lives. — Zolal Habibi is an Iranian human rights activist and a leading voice for justice, democracy, and women's rights in Iran. She serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), where she works with policymakers, journalists, and international institutions to amplify the call for a free, secular, and democratic Iran. For more than two decades, she has been a steadfast advocate for those silenced inside Iran—particularly women, youth, and political prisoners—bringing their stories to global platforms. Zolal's commitment to this cause is deeply personal. When she was just seven years old, her father, a respected writer and political dissident, was killed by the Iranian regime in the summer of 1988; a summer marked by the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in Iran. This tragedy shaped her life's mission: to ensure that such crimes are neither forgotten nor repeated, and that the aspirations of the Iranian people for freedom and democracy are recognized worldwide. Through her advocacy, media appearances, and international engagement, Zolal continues to champion the Iranian people's struggle. Sarah Bahbah is a Palestinian visual artist and director whose work has reached hundreds of millions around the world. Her signature style blends film photography with raw, confessional text capturing the thoughts people feel but rarely say out loud.In this episode, we sit down with Sarah to talk about healing, identity, and what it means to turn pain into something powerful. We get into growing up between cultures, navigating shame, reclaiming her voice, and how her art became both survival and transformation. She breaks down her creative process, from writing intrusive thoughts in her notes to building cinematic worlds that allow her (and others) to process trauma. We also dive into her independent journey, walking away from the traditional art system, and building a model that made her work accessible while reaching tens of thousands globally. This conversation goes deep into emotional regulation, relationships, spirituality, and what it really means to heal not just as an artist, but as a person.Subscribe for more conversations like this.
Iran may be entering one of the most pivotal moments in its modern history. As tensions rise and voices for change grow louder, a powerful message is emerging from inside and outside the country: the future of Iran must be determined by the Iranian people themselves, not by the ruling regime and not by foreign powers. In this timely conversation, we explore what this moment means for Iran and for the world. Our guest helps unpack the deeper realities often overlooked in global discussions about Iran, including the growing call for a secular, democratic republic and the critical role ordinary citizens are playing in shaping the country's future. We also examine the powerful leadership of women at the forefront of protests and resistance movements, the misunderstandings many in the international community have about the Iranian people's aspirations, and why the demand for sovereignty and democratic reform has become more urgent than ever.Looking ahead, we discuss what developments the world should be watching in the coming months and what the international community needs to understand about the Iranian people's determination to define their own path forward. At its core, this conversation is about a simple but profound principle: a nation's future belongs to its people.https://www.ncr-iran.org/en/
Iran has been experiencing renewed waves of protest and strikes alongside intensifying repression, including a widely reported escalation in executions. This conversation explores what people inside the country are demanding, how resistance is being organised over time, and why many advocates argue there is a “third option” beyond either foreign military intervention or accommodation of authoritarian rule. It also centres women's leadership as a practical and strategic force—examining how plans, legitimacy, international advocacy, and collective discipline shape the prospects for democratic change, and what lessons this holds for changemakers working in difficult, high-stakes contexts elsewhere.About Our Guest: Zolal Habibi is an Iranian human rights activist and a leading international advocate for justice, democracy, and women's rights in Iran. She serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), where she works to advance global support for a free, secular, and democratic Iranian republic. With more than two decades of sustained activism, her work has focused on amplifying the voices of political prisoners, dissidents, and civil society actors inside Iran, through engagement with international institutions, human rights forums, and global media. Her commitment to this work is deeply personal, shaped by the killing of her father—a prominent Iranian writer and political dissident—during the 1988 massacre, an event that solidified her lifelong resolve to challenge impunity and state violence. Zolal's advocacy has contributed to concrete outcomes, including international recognition of the 1988 massacre as a crime against humanity and the successful relocation of thousands of at-risk dissidents, demonstrating the capacity of sustained, principled advocacy to translate moral claims into tangible protection and change. Join the conversation by letting us know what you think about the episode!Resistance movements are happening all over the world. Some are in their infancy, and some have been in existence for decades. Case in point, Iran. Our guest this week, Zolal Habibi, joins us to talk about Iran's women's rights and human rights resistance movements. Her connection to the movement and her work to support it are incredibly interesting and powerful. We can learn so much from her story and the resistance at large. As a human rights and women's rights advocate and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Zolal Habibi works to amplify the voices of Iranians fighting for freedom and justice. Her activism began as a teenager, shaped profoundly by the loss of her father - a celebrated Iranian writer - who was killed by the regime in 1988. Today, she engages with policymakers, journalists, and civil society leaders worldwide to expose human rights abuses in Iran and support the movement for a democratic, secular republic.Where to find Zolal Habibi and learn more about her work:X/Twitter: x.com/ashrafi4ever Instagram: instagram.com/ashrafi4everLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/zolalhabibi/Websites: ncr-iran.org, maryam-rajavi.com/enSupport the showBe part of the conversation by sharing your thoughts about this episode, what you may have learned, how the conversation affected you. I tu? Carai. Sílvia: [2:58] Però això és una cançó seva? Andreu: [3:01] Doncs no ho sé. Andreu: [3:05] A mi tampoc.
S2 E37 Teddy Collins Teddy Collins, beverage director at Miami's Habibi and Kiki on the River, joins Bob Cutler to talk about his journey from barback to cocktail curator. He reveals his signature builds, including the Moroccan Margarita and a jasmine daiquiri served in a Moroccan bowl on a flying carpet coaster, and emphasizes a love of balanced builds, unique vessels, and immersive guest experiences. Teddy's cocktails are driven by cultural storytelling, seasonal flavor, and hospitality know-how—with the Miami sunshine and international vibes front and center. Key Topics Cocktail Builds with a Story – From jasmine daiquiris to fat-washed bourbons, Teddy crafts drinks that reflect memory, place, and flavor. Visual and Aromatic Engagement – Vessels matter: Moroccan bowls, fish glasses, and flying carpet coasters turn drinks into moments. The Mentor Mindset – Teddy's focus on balance, teaching foundational technique, and passing along passion to new bartenders fuels Miami's cocktail culture. Episode Index [06:00] Teddy shares his backstory—from Rhode Island to South Beach nightlife—and how working his way up from a barback shaped his perspective on service and showmanship. [09:00] The Moroccan Margarita tops the list at Habibi, with other cocktails reflecting local and global influences, including pistachio orgeat and jasmine daiquiris. [13:00] Teddy's builds follow a 2-¾-¾ citrus-sugar-spirit balance; he emphasizes adapting ratios based on spirit profiles and liqueur sweetness. [15:00] Miami's spring flavors feature fresh herbs, tropical fruits, and collaborations with chefs, allowing the bar menu to evolve with culinary inspiration. [26:00] His ultimate goal: make each drink a story, elevate the guest experience, and pass on knowledge to the next generation of bartenders.
In every age, empires create words to describe the people in the societies they seek to dominate and exploit. Eventually, these terms are turned inward and used against themselves. The Greco-Romans—and their eastern heirs, whom modern scholars call the Byzantines—labeled those outside their empire as barbarians. The colonials who settled the Americas, after dismantling the peaceful coexistence of Semitic peoples in Southern Spain, referred to the inhabitants of this supposed “new” land as savages.Whether communists, leftists, or terrorists, from age to age and generation to generation, we rely on the notion of the alien or foreigner to demonize the other.Humanities scholars, clinging to the illusion of progress, speak as though they have just discovered this problem, but wisdom literature has tackled this since before Hellenism emerged as a blot on humanity's historical record. When Jesus sets out to make a pilgrimage to Decapolis, he does so under the control of his Father's will, who breathes into his sail and sends him on a mission—not to trample underfoot the barbarians at the edge of Constantine's empire, but to confront Constantine himself. It is Constantine, Habibi, who is the problem. The Emperor is the barbarian from whom the Lord's inheritance must be saved. This week, I discuss Luke 8:22, which exposes the true enemy of God, not the outsiders, but the emperor himself.Show Notesπλέω / מ-ל-א (mem-lamed-alef) / م-ل-أ (mīm-lām-hamza)That which fills, makes full; fullness, full amount, measure, extent:“Sing to the Lord a new song,Sing his praise from the end of the earth! You who go down to the sea, and all that fills it (וּמְלֹאוֹ umelo'o),You islands, and those who live on them.” (Isaiah 42:10)The root مَلَأَ (malaʾa) in Arabic can be found in words such as:مَلَأَ (malaʾa) - to fillمَلِيء (malīʾ) - full, filledمَمْلُوء (mamlūʾ) - filled (passive participle)امْتَلَأَ (imtalaʾa) - to become full, to be filledمِلْء (milʾ) - fullness, fillingتَمْلِيء (tamlīʾ) - filling (verbal noun)مَلَأ (malaʾ) - assembly, ruling council, crowd, publicἄνεμος / ר-ו-ח (resh-waw-ḥet) / ر-و-ح (rāʾ–wāw–ḥāʾ)ἄνεμος (anemos, “wind,” 8:23) When the wind fully enters (מְלֹא / مِلْء) the sail, it takes shape, and the boat is propelled forward. Classical Arabic poetry often compares the full sail to a “breathing chest”—expanding, alive, and responsive to the unseen force of wind (رِيح rīḥ, which in Scripture functions as God's breath or “Spirit.”) The biblical Hebrew term רוּחַ (ruaḥ) and the Arabic رُوح (rūḥ) both function as wind or divine Spirit. The Greek verb πληρόω (plēroō), meaning “to fill,” “make full,” or “complete,” also corresponds to מ-ל-א and appears numerous times throughout Paul's letters, notably: καὶ μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ, ἐν ᾧ ἐστιν ἀσωτία, ἀλλὰ πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι,“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.”(Ephesians 5:18)Paul deliberately chooses a second term in 1 Corinthians—not πληρόω, but κορέννυμι—to convey sharp sarcasm, mocking the leaders in Roman Corinth for being full of themselves and smug in their self-satisfaction. The only other appearance of this Pauline term, which does not occur in the Septuagint, is in Acts 27, which corresponds to Luke by way of authorship: “καὶ ἐμπλησθέντες τροφῆς ἐκούφισαν τὸ πλοῖον ἐκβαλλόμενοι τὸν σῖτον εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν.”“And when they had eaten enough (ἐμπλησθέντες), they lightened the ship by throwing out the wheat into the sea.” (Acts 27:38)See also: ب-و-ء (bā-wāw-hamza) / ב-ו-א (bet-waw-alef) πλέω also corresponds to בוא (Jonah 1:3), which aligns with Acts 27:38. الْمَلَأ (al-malaʾ) “ruling council, community leaders, chiefs, the elites” is a recurring function in the Qur'an, where prophets confront the elite power structures in their communities. The malaʾ are gatekeepers of institutional norms and the status quo, resisting the prophets' calls for repentance and submission to God.قَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَاحِرٌ عَلِيمٌqāla al-malaʾu min qawmi firʿawna inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīm“The elite of Pharaoh's people said, ‘Indeed, this is a learned magician.'”Surah al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:34 (ref. to Moses)فَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِن قَوْمِهِ مَا هَـٰذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ…faqāla al-malaʾu alladhīna kafarū min qawmihi mā hādhā illā basharun mithlukum…“So the chiefs of his people who disbelieved said, ‘This is only a man like yourselves…'”Surah al-Muʾminūn 23:24 (ref. to Noah)The malaʾ belittle the prophets:• “He's just a man like us.” (26:155)• “He's a liar.” (26:186)• “He's possessed/crazy.” (26:154)• “He's a magician.” (26:34) ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
